Total cholesterol level in mice with hypercholesterolemia was determined after intraperitoneal administration of the methanolic extract of some medicinal plants. From the data obtained, it was suggested that the methanolic extract of Elaeagnus crispa, Ixeris dentata, Prunus davidiana, Eriobotrya japonice, Aralia elata and Phragmites communis produced a significant hypocholesterotemic effect. In the case of the extract of Saussurea diamantiaca, on the other band, the total cholesterol level was markedly increased. The methanolic extract of Ixeris dentata, Prunus davidiana and Phragmites communes also decreased the level of blood glucose in alloxan-diabetic male albino mice while that of Eriobotrya japonica, Allium tuberosum, Houttuynia cordata and Eucommia japonica did not produce this effect.
21plants, which collected from Korea and Japan, were applied to antitumor and cytotoxic screening tests against sarcoma 180 a ascitec in mice. The results are summariged as follows : 1) The total packed cell volume method has been used for the antimeoplastic screening for from natural higher plants in Korea. By this method, we have found out that Selaginella involves, Patrinia hispida, Archyranthes japonica and Solanum nigrum having significant activity and also Cydonia sinensis and Rubia akane showed slight activity to antitumor 2) The total packed cell volune method has been used for the antineoplastic screening for from natural higher plants in Japan. Among the 21 tested plants, lsodon japonicus having strong antitumor activity and also Torilis japonica, Aralia elata, Leonurus sibiricus and Rubia cordifolia showed significant activity to anticancer tumor while Forsythia spp and Solanum nigrum showed slight activity to antitumor. 3) Among the 21 tested Korea plants, lsodon excisus and Forsythia Koreana showed strong antitumor activity by the V79 cytotoxic cell screening test.

This study was carried out to investigate the growth responses of medicinal plants such as Glehnia littoralis, Cryptotaenia japonica, Angelica gigas, Reynoutria japonica, Saururus chinensis, Houttuynia cordata, Ligularia fischeri, and Aralia cordata under 70%-shading and full sunlight conditions on a rooftop condition using artificial soil as a growth media. Glehnia littoralis, Cryptotaenia japonica, Ligularia fischeri, Saururus chinensis, and Houttuynia cordata showed better growth on plant height, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length and leaf number under full sunlight conditions on a rooftop condition. Cryptotaenia japonica and Houttuynia cordata had high value of Hunter's a (red-green) under full sunlight, while had lower value of L(lightness) and b(blue-yellow) than those of 70% shading condition. As an index of plant stress response, Glehnia littoralis, Reynoutria japonica, Houttuynia cordata, Ligularia fischeri showed Fv/Fm values 0.79~0.84 under full sunlight in August, indicating low stress on plant growth. Therefore they seemed to be suitable medicinal plats for rooftop conditions. Ligularia fischeri and Reynoutria japonica showed better growth under 70% shading treatment in August, while showed high growth response under full sunlight conditions in September. The 70% shading treatment was effective for the growth of Angelica gigas, Reynoutria japonica, and Aralia cordata. Angelica gigas and Reynoutria japonica, however, showed better plant growth under full sunlight during summer. The results showed that Glehnia littoralis, Cryptotaenia japonica, Ligularia fischeri, Saururus chinensis, and Houttuynia cordat seemed to be suitable medicinal plants for rooftop garden where there is a full sunlight condition.
The objective of this study was to monitor vegetation development process after timber harvesting at (Mt.) Baekwoonsan Seoul National University Forests, Korea. Two monitoring plots were established in 1994 and woody plant were monitored from 1994 to 1999. Vegetation development pattern during last six years(1994-1999) after timber harvesting were as follows; Styrax obassia, Styrax japonica and Lindera erythrocarpa as of the existing tree were competitive species in the first year after clearcut, and Styrax japonica and Lindera erythrocarpa as of sprout tree) and Aralia elata as of seedling were dominant species in the sixth years after clearcut. Species diversity indices of harvested forest interior was decreased at the southwestern slope and increased at the northeastern slope. According to DBH distribution pattern, No. of individuals of Lindera erythrocarpa and Aralia elata showed vigorous growth in the sub-canopy layer and then Styrax japonica, Quercus serrata, Maackia amurensis, Lespedeza maximowixzii, Lindera obtusiloba, Staphylea bumalda, Clero-dendrum trichotomum, Weigela subsessilis, in order showed good growth in the sixth year after clearcut. Lindera erythrocarpa with a reversed J-shaped curve pattern by DBH class will be increased while Aralia elata with a J-shaped curve pattern will be decreased.
The purpose of this study was to find the effect of 36 traditional medicinal plant species on hepatoprotective activity screening. For this study, carbon tetrachloride $(CCl_{4})$ intoxificated rats were used. Test extracts were made with the traditional medicinal plants refluxed in 95% MeOH and orally administered to the rats. Sixteen species, such as Mentha arvensis, Sophora japonica, Benincasa hispida, Lonicera japonica (Lonicerae Flos), Agaricus blazei, Epimedium koreanum, Aralia continentalis, Lithospermum erythrorhizon, Cimicifuga foetida, Gastrodia elata, Sanguisorba officinalis, Cephalonoplos segetum, Bupleurum falcatum, Alisma plantago-aquatica var. orientale, Lonicera japonica (Lonicerae Folium) and Sinomenium acutum showed protective effect against increased serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and/or serum asparteate aminotransferase (AST) activities.

This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of mixed extracts of Achyranthes japonica Nakai (Aj) and Aralia continentalis Kitagawa (Ac) (ratios of 1 : 2, 1 : 3, 1 : 5, 2 : 1, 3 : 1 and 5 : 1) on RAW264.7 macrophages. Cell toxicity was determined using a cell counting kit (CCK) assay. We evaluated anti-inflammatory effects of the mixed extracts of Aj and Ac by measuring interleukin $(IL)-1{\beta}$, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor $(TNF){\alpha}$ using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit assay. The mixed extracts of Aj and Ac inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced $IL-1{\beta}$ and $TNF{\alpha}$ in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Comparing different ratios of the mixed extracts, the 2 : 1 ratio of Aj and Ac has much more potency and inhibited the production of $TNF{\alpha}$ in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells. The results of the present study showed that the mixed extracts of Aj and Ac have potential anti-inflammatory effects on RAW264.7 macrophages. Therefore, these extracts may be used as a good source of functional foods for the protection against inflammatory diseases.
This study examined the radial variations in element demensions of mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica.), elm (Ulmus japonica.), maackia(Maackia amurensis.), castor aralia (Kalopanax pictus.) from pith outwards. Disks were cut from the d.b.h.(above 1.2m) of each species and specimen for tangential pore diameters, fiber length, ray height and width were taken from 1-3rd, 5th, 10th, 15th.............40th ring number from pith. The tangential pore diameters in the earlywood increased rapidly near the pith and then maintained almost constant or very gradually increased diameters in about 20th-30th ring number from pith. In the latewood, tangential pore diameters gradually increased from pith to outwards though the increment is smaller than in early wood. Radial variations of ray height and width maintained almost constant, gradually increased or rapidly increased diameters and then maintained almost constant from pith to outwards. Patterns of radial variations in the fiber length were almost coincident with patterns of earlywood pore diameters, and of ray height or width in Ulmus japonica and Maackia amurensis.
To select new useful domestic plants with antimicrobial activities, thirty five samples of berry plant were distributed from Plant Diversity Research Center in Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. Their extracts with methanol were tested against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes by paper disc method. The methanol extracts from Viburnum dilatatum, Viburnum erosum, Aralia continentalis, Camellia japonica, Acer trumcatam, Arasaema takesimense and Rhysocarpus intermedius were effective against S. aureus and the results were as follows: Viburnum erosum 6.5 mm, Viburnum dilatatum and Aralia continentalis 7.0 mm, Rhysocarpus intermedius 8.0 mm, Acer trumcatum 9.0 mm, Camellia japonica and Arisaema takesimense 9.5 mm. And only the methanol extract from Camellia japonica was effective against L. monocytogenes, 7.0 mm. Antimicrobial activities of E. coli and S. typhymurium were not detected. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) of berry of Camellia japonica was examined as 1,250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against S. aureus and as 1,250∼2,500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against L. monocytogenes.
