  • The methanol extract of Aralia elata root bark was found to decrease the blood glucose level in normal and alloxan-treated rats. The fractionation process confirmed positive activity in ethylacetate fraction. It is suggested that this fraction may show potent antihyperglyceimic activity through stimulation of insulin secretion.

  • Aralia elata is an edible mountain vegetable. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is a process involving migration, proliferation and cell differentiation, as well as the formation of new capillary structures. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) plays an important role in angiogenesis. The development of a functional vascular system requires a variety of growth factors, their receptors, and intracellular signals. This study examines the effects of water extracts from: (i) A. elata root bark (Aralia extracts); (ii) a combination of Aralia extracts and fibroblast growth factors (FGF-2) on cultured porcine coronary artery endothelial cells (PCAECs). Aralia extracts induced the migration of PCAECs, which was inhibited by MMPs inhibitors. Combining Aralia extracts and FGF-2 enhanced the migration and the secretion of MMP-2 and MMP9 from PCAECs. We postulated that the Aralia extracts, which induced migrating activity in PCAECs, may be accomplished by increased secretion levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9.

  • The methanol extracts of Aralia elata bark showed antimicrobial activities against bacteria, yeast, fungi. The solvent fractionated acidic fraction that showed the activity was then successively purified with silica gel adsorption column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, silica gel partition column chromatography, HPLC and TLC. The isolated major active substance was identified as 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid by MS, GC-MS, IR, $^{1}H-NMR\;and\;^{13}C-NMR$. The content of 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid was 0.869㎎/g in dried bark of Aralia elata.

  • In the previous report, it was described that the butanol fraction of the root bark extract of Aralia elata had potent antigastritic and antiulcerative effects in rats, In this pharmacological profile, the fraction revealed low acute toxicities in mice and rats, no central nervous system activities, moderate analgesic action, weak inhibitory action in carrageenin edema of rats and no direct effects on isolated smooth muscles of rats and guinea-pigs. Slight lowering of blood pressure as given i.v. in rabbit was observed.

  • An antihyperglycemic compound in a model of alloxan induced diabetic rats was isolated from the root bark of Aralia elata. The compound identified to be oleanolic acid $28-O-{\beta}-_D-glucopyranoside$ was active at a dose of 100 mg/kg p.o. in the rats. It also has increased the contents of liver glycogen which were lowered by injection of alloxan in the rats.

  • Objectives : The trunk-bark and the root of A. elata were compared with each other in terms of their anti-oxidative activities. Methods : Using the trunk-bark and the root of A. elata, their anti-oxidative activities were examined through the in vitro and in vivo experiments. Results : The trunk-bark of A. elata in vitro had weaker anti-oxidative activities than its root. However, the trunk-bark of A. elata in vivo had stronger anti-oxidative activities than the root in the rats which was oxidatively stressed by alcohol. Conclusion : These results suggested that the trunk-bark of A. elata was also useful as a medicine.

  • The methanol extract of Aralia elata bark showed antimicrobial activities against bacteria, yeast and fungi. The active components were successively purified with solvent fractionation, silica gel adsorption column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, silica gel partition column chromatography and HPLC. The active substances were separated with HPLC where 1% acetic acid-MeOH (60 : 40, v/v) was used as mobile phase. The isolated active substance ($t_r$ 17.1 min) was identified as trans-3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid by $MS,\;^1H-NMR\;and\;^13C-NMR$.

  • In a preliminary screening of the plant extracts for the antigastritic action in rats, the extract of Aralia elata(Araliaceae) showed positive activity in HCI plus ethanol induced gastric lesion. Systematic fractions with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol resulted in the most patent activity with the butanol fraction: This butanol fraction at the oral dose of 200 mg/kg exhibited significant inhibition of absolute alcohol induced gastric lesion which was more potent than 100 mg/kg of cimetidine and had significant stimulation of mucus secretion. The butanol fraction showed significant decreases in the ulcer indices of Shay ulcers and inhibition of gastric juice secretion with acid output in pylorus-ligated stomachs of rats. It also suppressed the acetic acid induced gastric ulcer. These results might suggest that the butanol fraction had inhibitory action in gastric lesion and ulceration through inhibition of gastric acid secretion and stimulation of mucin secretion in the stomachs of rats.

  • From the root barks of Araila elata Seem.(Araliaceae) three known saponins together with oleanolic acid and $\beta$-sitosterol $3-O-\beta$-D-glucoside were isolated. The saponins were identified as oleanolic acid $28-O-\beta$-D-glucoside were isolated. The saponins were identified as oleanolic acid $28-O-\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl ester, oleanolic acid $3-O-\beta$-D-glucuronopyranoside and oleanolic acid $3-O-\alpha$-L-arabinofuranoysyl-(1$\rightarrow$4)-$\beta$-D-glucuronopyranoside(narcissiflo on the basis of chemical and spectra data. The latter two saponins were isolated as their dimethylesters as well as monomethylesters.

  • Aralia elata Seem. have a typical traditional significance among the wild herbs traditionally. Edible shoots of A. elata will augment consumer's interest due to its high value functional value, eco-friendly and pesticide-free produce. A. elata's root, fruit and bark are used as material of hypoglycemic agent and medicine for diabetes, kidney trouble, acute hepatitis, rheumation arthritis, stomach cancer and gastroenteric trouble. Flavonoid glycoside compound which is separated from A. elata's shoot shows high antioxidative activity. Also, root's identified active materials of antimicrobial was reported to be produced as food preservative and handy antimicrobial. Therefore, this research investigated quantitative morphological characteristics of leaves, spine and bud in naturally dominated and introducted A. elata in south Korea and then considered its principal compound analysis(PCA) and classification analysis(CA) among the 6 improved cultivars and 19 clones. PCA results showed that it show 76% accumulated explanation from four PC. The A. elata clones were classified into five groups; the first group of 15 clones including Yeongok, the second group of 5 clones including Yeoju, the third group of Bonghwa, Ulleung, the fourth group of Yongmunsa, Boseong and the fifth group of Singu. The object of this study will give us invaluable information about breeding by selection of A. elata in south Korea.
