  • Environmental monitoring was conducted to identify the characteristics and patterns of sedimentary environments of tidal flats in 12 areas on the west coast of Korea. The habitat of the mud shrimp Upogebia major contained higher organic and mud contents compared to the habitat of the manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. In particular, the mud content increased from 84.38% to 89.18% in the Seongam-4 area, where the mud shrimp and manila clam coexist, and the mean grain size exhibited a finer particle size, from 5.48 Φ to 5.80 Φ. In the mud shrimp habitat, the sediment mud content was > 60% and the mean grain size was > 5 Φ. Additionally, the mud shrimp only inhabited open coast tidal flat areas. The management of shellfish aquaculture farms by physical methods should be continued based on comparison of the sedimentary environments in the Boryeong and Seongam areas in response to the damage to the mud shrimp habitat.

  • Due to the recent climate change realization (timing, rainfall pattern changes), the flow regime is changing according to the watershed. The long-term change of flow regime is causing a significant change in structure and function of aquatic ecosystems. However, there is no analysis from the viewpoint of the aquatic ecosystem including flow rate alteration and ecological characteristics as well as the climate change connection in Korea yet. Therefore, We quantitatively assessed the impact of present-future flow regime alteration due to climate change on the Pseudopungtungia nigra habitat in the Mankyung river and floodplain area. As a result, it was confirmed that extreme hydrological conditions such as flood and drought are intensified in the future than the present. Especially, the changes of flow regime characteristics were clarified by comparing and analyzing the magnitude, frequency, duration, rate of change, and by linking flow regime characteristics with physical habitat analysis, it could be suggested that climate change would significantly increase the risk of future ecological changes.

  • The development in data collection techniques results in high dimensional data sets, where discrimination is an important and commonly encountered problem that are crucial to resolve when high dimensional data is heterogeneous (non-common variance covariance structure for classes). An example of this is to classify microbial habitat preferences based on codon/bi-codon usage. Habitat preference is important to study for evolutionary genetic relationships and may help industry produce specific enzymes. Most classification procedures assume homogeneity (common variance covariance structure for all classes), which is not guaranteed in most high dimensional data sets. We have introduced regularized elimination in partial least square coupled with QDA (rePLS-QDA) for the parsimonious variable selection and classification of high dimensional heterogeneous data sets based on recently introduced regularized elimination for variable selection in partial least square (rePLS) and heterogeneous classification procedure quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA). A comparison of proposed and existing methods is conducted over the simulated data set; in addition, the proposed procedure is implemented to classify microbial habitat preferences by their codon/bi-codon usage. Five bacterial habitats (Aquatic, Host Associated, Multiple, Specialized and Terrestrial) are modeled. The classification accuracy of each habitat is satisfactory and ranges from 89.1% to 100% on test data. Interesting codon/bi-codons usage, their mutual interactions influential for respective habitat preference are identified. The proposed method also produced results that concurred with known biological characteristics that will help researchers better understand divergence of species.

  • The playas of the Southern High Plains (SHP) of Texas, USA are an important habitat for over one million wintering waterfowl. However, the recent trend toward the modification of playas for agricultural use is threatening winter habitat of waterfowl in this region. Diurnal activity budgets of wintering mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were conducted from 1 October to 31 March, 1983-1984, and 1984-1985) at three habitat types; steep-sided pits, terraced pits, and open lakes. All seven activity patterns (feeding, locomotion, resting, comfort, courtship, alert, and agonistic) were different (P<0.05) among the three habitat types for wintering mallards on the SHP of Texas. Terraced pits supported more feeding activity (27.8%) (P<0.001) than steep-sided pits (11.2%) or open lakes (2.6%) due to their abundance of natural seeds and aquatic invertebrates. Hens (17.5%) fed more than drakes (11.7%) (P<0.05). Locomotion (32.2%) and alert (2.8%) behavior across the three habitat types showed the highest level during the early morning (6:00-9:00 AM). Paired mallards rested more (37.9%) than unpaired mallards (25.8%) (P<0.05). Agonistic activity was highest (2.4%) in terraced pits throughout the season.

  • River restoration and environmental improvement projects have been peformed by social needs, therefore methodology for evaluating such projects must be provided. The PHysical HABitat SIMulation system (PHABSIM) is proposed as a tool for the assessment of hydraulic habitat suitability for aquatic species related to flow regime in river. This study evaluates the change of physical habitat for Zacco platypus according to small dam removal and the model suitability by applying PHABSIM to the reach where small dam was removed. It is shown that the physical habitat is generally increased and improved where the small dam was removed. However, physical habitat in the spawning stage that has a weak swimming speed is decreased by increased flow velocity in the upstream area of small dam, so proper countermeasure for that condition should be needed. Consequently, PHABSIM can be effectively used to provide methodology for assessment and necessity of various river projects including a removal of out-aged hydraulic structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide essential data necessary to assess ecological flow requirements by understanding habitat conditions for fish species through monitoring an ecological environment in the Korea stream (Dal Stream) and building related database. On-site surveys were conducted for identifying ecological and habitat conditions at the four monitoring sites. Fish sampling was carried out at the selected four sites (St.) during the period ranging from September, 2008 to September, 2009. At the four sampling sites, we measured water surface elevation, depth and velocity at the cross-sections. Optimal Ecological Flowrates (OEFs) were estimated using the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) established for four fish species Zacco koreanus (St.1), Pungtungia herzi (St.2), Coreoleuciscus splendidus (St.3), and Zacco platypus (St.4) selected as icon species using the Physical HABitat SIMulation system (PHABSIM). Eighteen species (56.3%) including Odontobutis interrupta, Coreoperca herzi and C. splendidus were found endemic out of the 32 species in eight families sampled during this study period. The endangered species was collected Acheilognathus signifier, Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa and Gobiobotia macrocephala, and this relative abundance was 9.4%. The most frequently found one was Z. platypus (31.3%) followed by C. splendidus (17.6%) and Z. koreanus (15.7%). The estimated IBI values ranged from 27.3 to 34.3 with average being 30.3 out of 50, rendering the site ecologically poor to fair health conditions. For C. splendidus (St.3), the dominant fish species in the stream, the favored habitat conditions were estimated to be 0.3-0.5 m for water depth, 0.4-0.7 m/s for flow velocity and sand-cobbles for substrate size, respectively. An OEFs of 8.5 m3/s was recommended for the representative fish species at the St.3.

  • This study examined the habitat distribution characteristics of Aquatic Oligochaeta according to the construction of weirs in the four major rivers in South Korea. The area was investigated 10 times from March to October in 2018 and a total of 18 species and 35,390 ind. m-2 were sampled. The dominant species by number was Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri(77.1%) and the subdominant species was Branchiura sowerbyi(9.5%). A total of 32.418 g m-2 dry weight was analyzed. The correlation analysis showed that the number of Aquatic Oligochaeta individuals correlated with the sediment depth, clay ratio, silt ratio, sand ratio, cobble ratio, pebble ratio, pH and TOC mg L-1. Specifically, the clay ratio and sediment depth were associated with increases in the number of individuals. The total organic carbon(TOC) increased from March to October and, conversely, the number of individuals tended to decrease.

  • Although the construction of the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage (NEB) improved the water supply in the region, it cut off the longitudinal connectivity of the estuary aquatic ecosystem. Thus, the social demands for opening the NEB have been continuously raised, and the efforts to restore the aquatic ecosystem of the Nakdong River estuary began in 2017. Many fish species have inhabited the Nakdong River estuary. Since their habitat and migration characteristics vary widely, the sluice gate operation considering them is essential for the restoration of the aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, in this study, we monitored the fish species living and migrating in the Nakdong River estuary and analyzed the possibility of smooth movement of for each fish species by calculating the average flow velocity according to the type and the height of the gate opening. Moreover, we selected the target fish species for each month and suggested the sluice gate operation according to the depth of the main habitat to present the measures that are ideal for optimal restoration of the aquatic ecosystem in the Nakdong River estuary area.
