Wind tunnel test which is one of the method to predict the aeroelastic characteristics has difficulties to make scale-down structural model and achieve a specified free stream velocity. It is very costly and complicated to consider similarity relationships between real structure and scale-down structural model. "Dry Wind-Tunnel(DWT)" was proposed to overcome these difficulties. This is made up of Ground Vibration Test hardware and software to compute the aerodynamic forces. In the present study, program for computing the real-time unsteady aerodynamic forces which is an important part of DWT system was developed by Matlab Simulink and dSPACE. In addition, using this program and software which is a part of the test structure, a real-time flutter analysis was conducted and the results are verified by ZAERO.

Nonlinear aeroelastic analyses of a missile control fin are performed considering backlash and dynamic stiffness of actuator. Doublet-Hybrid method is used for the calculation of subsonic unsteady aerodynamic forces, and aerodynamic forces are approximated by the minimum-state approximation. For nonlinear flutter analysis backlash is represented by a free-play and is linearized by using the describing function method. Also, dynamic stiffness is function of frequency and is calculated by solving equation of motion for actuator. The linear and nonlinear flutter analyses show that the aeroelastic characteristics are significantly dependent on the backlash and dynamic stiffness. From the nonlinear flutter analysis, various types of limit cycle oscillations are observed in a range of air speeds below the linear divergent flutter boundary. The nonlinear flutter characteristics and the nonlinear aeroelastic responses are also investigated in the time domain.
Historical buildings in seismically active regions are severely damaged by earthquakes, since they certainly were not designed by the original builders to withstand seismic effects. In particular the reports after major ground motions indicate that earthquake-induced pounding between buildings may lead to substantial damage or even collapse of colliding structures. The research on structural pounding during earthquakes has been recently much advanced, although most of the studies are conducted on simplified single degree of freedom systems. In this paper a detailed pounding-involved response analysis of three adjacent structures is performed, concerning the main bodies of the "Quinto Orazio Flacco" school. The construction includes a main masonry building, with an M-shaped plan, and a reinforced concrete building, separated from the masonry one and realized along its free perimeter. By the analysis of the capacity curves obtained by suitable pushover procedures performed separately for each building, it emerges that masonry and reinforced concrete buildings are vulnerable to earthquake-induced structural pounding in the longitudinal direction. In particular, due to the geometric configuration of the school, a special case of impact between the reinforced concrete structure and two parts of the masonry building occurs. In order to evaluate the pounding-involved response of three adjacent structures, in this paper a numerical procedure is proposed, programmed using MATLAB software. Both a non-linear viscoelastic model to simulate impact and an elastic-perfectly plastic approximation of the storey shear force-drift relation are assumed, differently from many commercial softwares which admit just one non-linearity.

The interaction between forward mounted propeller and wing in ground effect, and its aerodynamic performance are analyzed by potential flow approximation. A Vortex Lattice Method(VLM) for the propeller analysis and a potential based panel method for the WIG are used together with an image method by assuming the free surface as a rigid wall. The interaction of propeller and wing in the proximity of the ground is taken into account by an iterative procedure where the boundary conditions are satisfied with the given convergence criteria. The program developed is first checked by comparing its numerical results with the experimental data and other numerical results for the propeller MP101-rudder MR21 system. Then, the propeller-WIG interaction and its performance versus ground clearance are investigated by changing parameters such as propeller position, diameter and speed of revolution. It is shown that the forward mounted propeller increases the lift forces of the wing and also enhances the height stability, depending on the design parameter. Therefore, the appropriate selection of the design parameter such as propeller diameter, revolution, the longitudinal and vertical position of propeller is necessary.

Global-Local Laminate Variational Model is utilized to investigate the characteristics of interlaminar stresses in thick composite laminates under uniform axial extension. Various laminates with different fiber orientation and stacking sequences are analyzed to observe the behavior of interlaminar normal stresses. From this result, the interlaminar normal stress distribution along the laminate interfaces is examined and discussed with an existing approximation model. The repeated stacking of Poisson's ratio symmetric sublaminates is found to be the best stacking method of thick composite laminates to reduce the interlaminar normal stresses for the prevention of the free-edge delamination.
Reconstruction of 3D objects from a single view image is generally an ill-posed problem because of the projection distortion. A monocular vision based 3D object localization method is proposed in this paper, which approximates an object on the ground to a simple bounding solid and works automatically without any prior information about the object. A spherical or cylindrical object determined based on a circularity measure is approximated to a bounding cylinder, while the other general free-shaped objects to a bounding box or a bounding cylinder appropriately. For a general object, its silhouette on the ground is first computed by back-projecting its projected image in image plane onto the ground plane and then a base rectangle on the ground is determined by using the intuition that touched parts of the object on the ground should appear at lower part of the silhouette. The base rectangle is adjusted and extended until a derived bounding box from it can enclose the general object sufficiently. Height of the bounding box is also determined enough to enclose the general object. When the general object looks like a round-shaped object, a bounding cylinder that encloses the bounding box minimally is selected instead of the bounding box. A bounding solid can be utilized to localize a 3D object on the ground and to roughly estimate its volume. Usefulness of our approach is presented with experimental results on real image objects and limitations of our approach are discussed.
The global performance of the 5MW OC4 semisubmersible floating wind turbine in random waves was numerically simulated by using the turbine-floater-mooring fully coupled and time-domain dynamic analysis program FAST-CHARM3D. There have been many papers regarding floating offshore wind turbines but the effects of second-order wave-body interactions on their global performance have rarely been studied. The second-order wave forces are actually small compared to the first-order wave forces, but its effect cannot be ignored when the natural frequencies of a floating system are outside the wave-frequency range. In the case of semi-submersible platform, second-order difference-frequency wave-diffraction forces and moments become important since surge/sway and pitch/roll natural frequencies are lower than those of typical incident waves. The computational effort related to the full second-order diffraction calculation is typically very heavy, so in many cases, the simplified approach called Newman's approximation or first-order-wave-force-only are used. However, it needs to be justified against more complete solutions with full QTF (quadratic transfer function), which is a main subject of the present study. The numerically simulated results for the 5MW OC4 semisubmersible floating wind turbine by FAST-CHARM3D are also extensively compared with the DeepCWind model test results by Technip/NREL/UMaine. The predicted motions and mooring tensions for two white-noise input-wave spectra agree well against the measure values. In this paper, the numerical static-offset and free-decay tests are also conducted to verify the system stiffness, damping, and natural frequencies against the experimental results. They also agree well to verify that the dynamic system modeling is correct to the details. The performance of the simplified approaches instead of using the full QTF are also tested.

To contribute towards more accurate estimation of the virtual inertia coefficient for the horizontal vibration of ships, three dimensional correction factor $J_H$ for the added mass of finitely long elliptic prismatic bars in horizontal vibration in a free surface of an ideal fluid are calculated. In the problem formulation Dr. T. Kumai's quasi-finite length concept[1,11,12] is employed. Now that, in Dr. Kumai's work[1] for the horizontal vibration the mathematical model was a circular cylinder, the principal aim of the authors' work is to investigate the influence of the beam-draft ratio B/T on $J_H$. The numerical results of this work are shown in Fig.3 graphically, from which we may recognize that the influence of B/T on $J_H$ is remarkable as much as that of the length-draft ratio L/T(refer to Fig.1 also). In Fig.3 the curves for B/T=2.00 are of those based on Dr. Kumai's result[1]. On the other hand, the experimental data obtained by Burril et al.[9] for the horizontal vibration of finitely long prismatic bars of various cross-section shapes are compared with the theoretical added mass coefficients defined by combination of the authors' $J_H$ from Fig.3 and two dimensional coefficients $C_H$ obtained by Lewis form approximation for the corresponding sections. They are in reasonable correspondence with each other as shown in Fig.2. Finally, considering that the longitudinal profile of full-form ship's hull is well resembled to that of an elliptic cylinder and that the influences of other factors such as the sectional area coefficient and the shape of section contour itself can be well merged in the two dimensional added mass coefficient, the authors recommend that the data given in Fig.3 may be successfully adopted for the three dimensional correction factor the added mass in the horizontal vibration of hull-form ships.
The backscattered sound energy by fish depends on size and physical structure and, most important, on the presence or absence of a swimbladder. Target strength experiments of red seabream (Pagrus major) were conducted by using 38 (split-beam), 120 (split-beam) and 200 kHz (dual-beam) frequencies with live fishes confined in a net-cage and free swimming in tank without the cage, respectively. For 38, 120, and 200 kHz frequencies, target strength equations are expressed as a function of fish length:TS/sub 38kHz/=20 log/sub 1o(l)/-66.41, TS/sub 120kHz/=20 log/sub 1o(1)/-71.80, and TS/sub 200kHz/=20 log/sub 1o(1)/-73.94. To test the acoustic models by using Helmholtz-Kirchhoff ray approximation, predictions of target strength based on swimbladder morphometries are compared with target strength measurements. The target strength of whole fish depends on variations in swimbladder morphology than fish body morphology. In the mean time, when the fish is confined in the net cage, scattering length by the backscattered signal matched with the Gaussian PDF, while under the free-swimming condition, scattering length is close to the Rayleigh PDF.

Forward osmotic pressure-free reverse osmosis (Δ𝜋=0 RO) was invented in 2013. The first patent (US 9,950,297 B2) was registered on April 18, 2018. The "Osmotic Pressure of Concentrated Solutions" in JACS (1908) by G.N. Lewis of MIT was used for the estimation. The Chang's RO system differs from conventional RO (C-RO) in that two-chamber system of osmotic pressure equalizer and a low-pressure RO system while C-RO is based on a single chamber. Chang claimed that all aqueous solutions, including salt water, regardless of its osmotic pressure can be separated into water and salt. The second patent (US 10.953.367B2, March 23, 2021) showed that a low-pressure reverse osmosis is possible for 3.0% input at Δ𝜋 of 10 to 12 bar. Singularity ZERO reverse osmosis from his third patent (Korea patent 10-22322755, US-PCT/KR202003595) for a 3.0% NaCl input, 50% more water recovery, use of 1/3 RO membrane area, and 1/5th of theoretical energy. These numbers come from Chang's laboratory experiments and theoretical analysis. Relative residence time (RRT) of feed and OE chambers makes Δ𝜋 to zero or negative by recycling enriched feed flow. The construction cost by S-ZERO was estimated to be around 50~60% of the current RO system.
