Recently, there have been studies about the increasing effect on the local plate buckling strength of flat plates when longitudinally stiffened with closed-section ribs and an approximate solution to quantitatively estimate these effects were suggested for flat plates. Since there are few studies to utilize such increasing effect on curved panels and a proper design method is not proposed, thus, this study aims to numerically evaluate such effect due to the rotational stiffness of closed-section ribs on curved panels and to propose an approximate method for estimating the buckling strength. Three-dimensional finite element models were set up using a general structural analysis program ABAQUS and a series of parametric numerical analyses were conducted in order to examine the variation of buckling stresses along with the rotational stiffness of closed-section ribs. By using a methodology that combine the strength increment factor due to the restraining effect by closed-section ribs and the buckling coefficient of the panel curvature, the approximate solutions for the estimation of buckling strength were suggested. The validity of the proposed methods was verified through a comparative study with the numerical analysis results.
The purpose of numerical analysis is to design an effective algorithm to realize some mathematical model on computer. In general the approximate value, which is obtained from computer operation, is not the same as the real value that is given by mathematical theory. Therefore the mr estimate measuring how approximate value is near to the real value, is the most significant task to evaluate the efficiency of algorithm. The limit of an error is used for mr estimation at the most case, but the exact mr evaluation could not be expected to get for there is no way to know the real value of the given problem. Wegmann's method has been researched, which is one of the solution to derive the numerical conformal mapping. We proposed an improved method for convergency by applying a low frequency filter to the Wegmann's method. In this paper we investigate error analysis based on some mathematical theory and propose an effective method which makes us able to estimate an error if the real value is not acquired. This kind of proposed method is also proved by numerical experiment.
This paper proposes an approximate procedure to estimate seismic displacement capacity - defined as yield displacement times the displacement ductility - of piles in marine oil terminals. It is shown that the displacement ductility of piles is relatively insensitive to most of the pile parameters within ranges typically applicable to most piles in marine oil terminals. Based on parametric studies, lower bound values of the displacement ductility of two types of piles commonly used in marine oil terminals - reinforced-concrete and hollow-steel - with either pin connection or full-moment-connection to the deck for two seismic design levels - Level 1 or Level 2 - and for two locations of the hinging in the pile - near the deck or below the ground - are proposed. The lower bound values of the displacement ductility are determined such that the material strain limits specified in the Marine Oil Terminal Engineering and Maintenance Standard (MOTEMS) are satisfied at each design level. The simplified procedure presented in this paper is intended to be used for preliminary design of piles or as a check on the results from the detailed nonlinear static pushover analysis procedure, with material strain control, specified in the MOTEMS.

Most reinforce concrete Columns of Building structure are subjected to both axial load and biaxial bending. However, It is hard to estimate the moment capacity of biaxial bending by exact solution. Thus, columns under biaxial bending are designed by approximate methods in practice. The purpose of this study is to compare experimental result with approximate methods and exact solution by computer. Parameters of the present test are compressive strength of concrete (350, 585, 650kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and shape ratio of rectangular section. Ultimately, an experimental shape factor for rectangular RC column section is obtained through the test program. The shape of load contour is dominated by this shape factor obtained experimentally. So, reasonable design of RC columns subjected to both axial compression and biaxial bending depends on load contour.
We developed an upwind numerical formulation based on the eigenvalues of the approximate Jacobian matrix in order to solve the hyperbolic conservation laws governing the two-fluid two-phase flow models. We obtained eight analytic eigenvalues in the two dimensions that can be used for estimate of the wave speeds essential in constructing an upwind numerical method. Two-dimensional underwater cavitation in a flow past structural shapes or by underwater explosion can be solved using this method. We present quantitative prediction of cavitation for the water tunnel wall and airfoils that has both experimental data as well as numerical results by other numerical methods and models.

Chandrasekar et al. (2004) introduced a generalized Type-II hybrid censoring. In this paper, we propose generalized doubly Type-II hybrid censoring. In addition, this paper presents the statistical inference on the scale parameter for the half logistic distribution when samples are generalized doubly Type-II hybrid censoring. The approximate maximum likelihood(AMLE) method is developed to estimate the unknown parameter. The scale parameter is estimated by the AMLE method using two di erent Taylor series expansion types. We compar the AMLEs in the sense of the mean square error(MSE). The simulation procedure is repeated 10,000 times for the sample size n = 20; 30; 40 and various censored samples. The $AMLE_I$ is better than $AMLE_{II}$ in the sense of the MSE.

The effectiveness of the regenerator pertaining to Stirling cycle machines is studied by analyzing the heat transfer characteristics of the oscillating flow in a tube, and a new consistent definition of the regenerator effectiveness can be expressed by the ratio of the heat transfer in axial direction (Q$\_$axial/) to that in transverse direction (Q/su w/), and its approximate form is obtained as a function of Nusselt number for practical utility. Since an approximate value of the ratio Q$\_$axial//Qsub w/ can be expressed in terms of the time-averaged rather than transient temperatures, this expression is useful to estimate the heat transfer coefficient in the Stirling machine regenerator experimentally.
In many epidemiological studies, the occurrence times of the event of interest are right-censored or interval censored. In certain situations such as the AIDS data, however, the incubation period which is the time between HIV infection and the diagnosis of AIDS is usually doubly censored. In this paper, we impute the interval censored HIV infection time using three imputation methods. Mid imputation, conditional mean imputation and approximate Bayesian bootstrap are implemented to obtain right censored data, and then Gibbs sampler is used to estimate the coefficient factor of the incubation period. By using Bayesian approach, flexible modeling and the use of prior information is available. We applied both parametric and semi-parametric methods for estimating the effect of the covariate and compared the imputation results incorporating prior information for the covariate effects.
Dynamic analyses for a suite of ground of motions were conducted on concrete gravity dam sections to examine the earthquake induced stresses and effective damping. For this purpose, frequency domain methods that rigorously incorporate dam-reservoir-foundation interaction and time domain methods with approximate hydrodynamic foundation interaction effects were employed. The maximum principal tensile stresses and their distribution at the dam base, which are important parameters for concrete dam design, were obtained using the frequency domain approach. Prediction equations were proposed for these stresses and their distribution at the dam base. Comparisons of the stress results obtained using frequency and time domain methods revealed that the dam height and ratio of modulus of elasticity of foundation rock to concrete are significant parameters that may influence earthquake induced stresses. A new effective damping prediction equation was proposed in order to estimate earthquake stresses accurately with the approximate time domain approach.

The purpose of this research is to propose an approximate estimation system for Modernized Hanok. Mock-up (Jisinjae) site data has been collected and analysed to characterize the modernized Hanok and to examine the range of cost fluctuation rate with each work items. As a result, number of floor, area (㎥), shape, methods and materials were considered as key factors for price change on the total construction cost. Furthermore, wood structure (34%) and roof (17%) account for major cost percentage. The cost fluctuation rate of two factors were -3.3%~+5.6% (wood structure) and -4.1%~+4.2% (roof). For further research, existing method will be analysed in order to developing the Hanok estimation system. And the cost fluctuation rate of every work items will be continually evaluated.
