  • Applicability of tearing modulus based on J-integral proposed by Paris et al is investigated using compact tension specimens of strutural alloy steel (SCM4). Both general fracture test and instability fracture test are performed. The applied tearing modulus, ( $T_{j}$)app estimated from the real load vs. crack growth curve measured from experiments are compared with that estimated from the limit load vs. crack growth curve. The results are : (1) the $T_{j}$parameter could be applied to predict crack growth instability : (2) The use of ( $T_{j}$)app estimated from the load vs. crack growth curve, proposed in this study could be well predicted crack growth instability instead of that estimated form the limit load vs. crack growth curve.e.

  • The behaviors of acoustic emission emitted in the tests of the fracture toughness and fracture stability are observed by using the specimens of aluminum 2024-T351 and 7039-T6 alloys. The empirical eqution of J-R curve is derived. It is demonstrated from the comparison of the fracture toughness obtained from J-R curve with that from ASTM standard E813-81 that the latter is larger than the former. The discontinuous point in the log-log graph of J-integral vs. total acoustic emission count is observed in between the two offset lines referred from ASTM standard E813-81, but it's physical meaning is uncretain. An empirical material tearing modulus is derived in terms of the total acoustic emission count and proved to be valid in fracture instability test.

  • Generally, field performance of elastomeric track pad components has been poor, especially for the medium to heavy tonnage tracked vehicles, which are operated on the hilly cross-country course. The service life of these track pad, is affected not only by the terrain and environmental conditions but also by the speed, cornering, braking, weight of the vehicle, and the track tread design. In this research, modulus, tearing energy, and the rate of crack propagation of vulcanizates are evaluated by changing base materials to improve the service time of track pad. By increasing the contents of carbon black, modulus, tearing energy, and fatigue crack growth resistance of vulcanizates improved. Compared with the NR vulcanizate, the HNBR vulcanizate had a higher value of tearing energy. The rate of crack propagation of vulcanizates using smaller size carbon black was slower than that using larger size carbon black. When the HNBR was blended with the ZSC, the tearing energy of the vulcanizates was a little reduced because of the high modulus but the crack propagation rate was reduced significantly. In the relation between the crack propagation rate and the strain energy release rate, though up to 100% strain were applied to specimens, the slope on the log scale ($\beta$) varied between 1.72 and 2.3 with the kind of elastomer.

  • Applicability of $T_{\delta}$ proposed by Shin et al as an instability parameter for ductile material is investigated, Both general fracture test and instability fracture test are performed using compact tension specimens of structural alloy steel(SCM4), The values of ( $T_{\delta}$)$_{app}$(applied tearing modules) estimated from the real load vs. crack growth curve measured from experiments are compared with those estimated from the limit load vs. crack growth curve. The results are:(1) the $T_{\delta}$ parameter may be used as a crack instability parameter:(2) the use of ( $T_{\delta}$)$_{app}$ estimated from the load-crack growth curve, proposed in this study is reasonably justified.ified.d.

  • In this work, the influence of milled carbon fiber direction on mechanical properties of milled carbon fibers/carbon blacks/natural rubber compounds was investigated. The compounds were prepared by adding the 6 phr milled carbon fibers (MCFs) and 40 phr carbon blacks (CBs) into the natural rubber. The MCFs were aligned in a parallel and orthogonal direction in the compounds using two-roll-mill machine. Mechanical properties of compounds were studied by tensile characteristics and tearing strength. As a result, the compounds showed higher tensile strength, 100%~300% modulus, and tearing strength than those of using any other compounds due to the aligning MCFs in parallel. Mechanical properties of the compounds reinforced with non-aligned MCFs were inferior to those of others. Consequently, the parallel aligned MCFs in the compounds led to an increase of tensile properties and improvement of tearing strength, resulted from MCFs with the high elastic modulus.

  • Recent Experimental results show that the J integral can be effectively used to obtain a valid parameter for predicting plane strain and plane stress fracture. However, only a few research results have been reported for the effect of thickness where the plane strain state can not be assumed. A purpose of this study is to find the behavior of fracture touhness and tearing modulus varing the specimen thickness. The type of specimen in the present study is compact tension (CT). The thicknesses of the low carbon steel specimens that are used in the experiments are 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25mm. The measurement of crack length is taken by optical measurements method. From the study, the followings are found; 1) The fracture toughness and the tearing modulus which are obtained by using Yoon's and Simpson's formula show more conservative than that by using Rice's and Merkel's. 2) The fracture toughness is increase in specimen thickness which is reached 15mm. Beyond this thickness the fracture toughness is decreased in specimen thickness. 3) In the case of CT specimen with the thickness ranging from 5 to 25mm, the tearing modulus which is applied the same J integral equation is almost constant. 4) By using Yoon's formula, the correlation of the plane slress fracture toughness J sub(C) with specimen thickness B is expressed as the following formula. J sub(C)/J sub(IC)=1.7-15.1(B/W)+112.9(B/W) super(2) -301.3(B/W) super(3) +260.6(B/W) super(4)

  • The present paper considers the constraint effect on J-R curves under the two-parameter $J-A_2$ controlled crack growth within a certain amount of crack extension. Since the parameter $A_2$ in $J-A_2$ three-term solution is independent of applied loading under fully plasticity or large-scale defor-mation $A_2$ is a proper constraint parameter uring crack extension. Both J and $A_2$ are used to char-acterize the resistance curves of ductile crack growth using J as the loading level and $A_2$ are used to char-acterize the resistance curves of ductile crack growth using J as the loading level and A2 as a con-straint parameter. Approach of the constraint-corrected J-R curve is proposed and a procedure of transferring the J-R curves determined from standard ASTM procedure to non-standard speci-mens or real cracked structures is outlined. The test data(e.g. initiation toughness JIC and tearing modulus $T_R$) of Joyce and Link(Engineer-ing Fracture Mechanics 1997, 57(4) : 431-446) for single-edge notched bend[SENB] specimen with from shallow to deep cracks is employed to demonstrate the efficiency of the present approach. The variation of $J_{IC}$ and $T_R$ with the constraint parameter $A_2$ is obtained and a con-straint-corrected J-R curves is constructed for the test material of HY80 steel. Comparisons show that the predicted J-R curves can very well match with the experimental data for both deep and shallow cracked specimens over a reasonably large amount of crack extension. Finally the present constraint-corrected J-R curve is used to predict the crack growth resistance curves for different fracture specimens. over a reasonably large amount of crack extension. Finally the present constraint-corrected J-R curve is used to predict the crack growth resistance curves for different fracture specimens. The constraint effects of specimen types and specimen sizes on the J-R curves can be easily obtained from the constrain-corrected J-R curves.

  • In order to study wearable air cushion materials capable of responding to massive impact in high-altitude fall situation, high tenacity woven fabrics were bonded by heat only depending on various type of thermoplastic films and then mechanical properties were measured. Tensile strength, elongation, and 100% modulus measurement results for 4 types of films show that TPU-2 has higher impact resistance and easier expansion than PET-1. After thermal bonding, the combination with the highest tensile strength was a material with a TPU-2 film for nylon and a PET-2 film for PET, so there was a difference by type of fabric. The tear strength of the bonded materials were increased compared to the fabric alone, which shows that durability against damage such as tearing can be obtained through film adhesion. All of the peel strengths exceeded the values required by automobile airbags by about 5 times, and the TPU-2 bonded fabric showed the highest value. The air permeability was 0 L/dm2 /min. For both the film and the bonded material, which means tightness between the fabric and the film through thermal bonding. It is expected to be applied as a wearable air cushion material by achieving a level of mechanical properties similar to or superior to that of automobile airbags through the method of bonding film and fabric by thermal bonding.
