A Survey on Congestion Control for CoAP over UDP

  • The Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) is a specialized web transfer protocol proposed by the IETF for use in IoT environments. CoAP was designed as a lightweight machine-to-machine protocol for resource constrained environments. Due to the strength of low overhead, the number of CoAP devices is expected to rise rapidly. When CoAP runs over UDP for wireless sensor networks, CoAP needs to support congestion control mechanisms. Since the default CoAP defines a minimal mechanism for congestion control, several schemes to improve the mechanism have been proposed. To keep CoAP lightweight, the majority of the schemes have been focused mainly on how to measure RTT accurately and how to set RTO adaptively according to network conditions, but other approaches such as rate-based congestion control were proposed more recently. In this paper, we survey the literature on congestion control for CoAP and discuss the future research directions.

Evaluation of at-home bleaching protocol with application on different surfaces: bleaching efficacy and hydrogen peroxide permeability

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the bleaching efficacy and hydrogen peroxide permeability in the pulp chamber by the at-home bleaching gel in protocols applied on different dental surfaces. Materials and Methods: Forty premolars were randomly into 4 groups: control group no bleaching, only application on the buccal surface (OB), only application on the lingual surface (OL) and application in buccal and lingual surfaces, simultaneously (BL). At-home bleaching gel (White Class 7.5%) was used for the procedure. The bleaching efficacy was evaluated with a digital spectrophotometer (color change in CIELAB [ΔEab] and CIEDE 2000 [ΔE00] systems and Whitening Index for Dentistry [ΔWID]). The hydrogen peroxide permeability in the pulp chamber (㎍/mL) was assessed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry and data were analyzed for a 1-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results: All groups submitted to bleaching procedure showed bleaching efficacy when measured with ΔEab and ΔE00 (p > 0.05). Therefore, when analyzed by ΔWID, a higher bleaching efficacy were observed for the application on the groups OB and BL (p = 0.00003). Similar hydrogen peroxide permeability was found in the pulp chambers of the teeth undergoing different protocols (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The application of bleaching gel exclusively on the OB is sufficient to achieve bleaching efficacy, when compared to BL. Although the OL protocol demonstrated lower bleaching efficacy based on the ΔWID values, it may still be of interest and relevant in certain clinical scenarios based on individual needs, requiring clinical trials to better understand its specificities.

TASL: A Traffic-Adapted Sleep/Listening MAC Protocol for Wireless Sensor Network

  • In this paper, we proposed TASL-MAC, a medium-access control (MAC) protocol for wireless sensor networks. In wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes are usually deployed in a special environment, are assigned with long-term work, and are supported by a limited battery. As such, reducing the energy consumption becomes the primary concern with regard to wireless sensor networks. At the same time, reducing the latency in multi-hop data transmission is also very important. In the existing research, sensor nodes are expected to be switched to the sleep mode in order to reduce energy consumption. However, the existing proposals tended to assign the sensors with a fixed Sleep/Listening schedule, which causes unnecessary idle listening problems and conspicuous transmission latency due to the diversity of the traffic-load in the network. TASL-MAC is designed to dynamically adjust the duty listening time based on traffic load. This protocol enables the node with a proper data transfer rate to satisfy the application's requirements. Meanwhile, it can lead to much greater power efficiency by prolonging the nodes' sleeping time when the traffic. We evaluate our implementation of TASL-MAC in NS-2. The evaluation result indicates that our proposal could explicitly reduce packet delivery latency, and that it could also significantly prolong the lifetime of the entire network when traffic is low.

USN에서 QoS보장을 위한 MAC 프로토콜 (QoS Guaranteed MAC protocol in Ubiquitous Sensor Networks)

  • USN의 장점이 크게 부각되고 이에 대한 연구 개발이 활성화됨에 따라, 가까운 미래에는 하나의 USN을 통해 다양한 응용 서비스가 제공될 것으로 예상된다. 따라서 다수의 응용은 주기적 데이터 리포팅, 연속적인 정보 모니터링, 이벤트 드리븐 데이터, 쿼리 기반 데이터 등 데이터 패턴을 요구하게 되므로 각 응용에 맞는 QoS를 보장해 줄 수 있는 매커니즘을 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 USN에서 각 응용에 적합한 QoS를 제공하기 위해 S-MAC를 기반으로 listen과 sleep시간을 동적으로 변경시키는 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 알고리즘은 QoS에 적합하게 동작함으로써 불필요한 에너지의 소비를 최소화하고, 전체 네트워크 수명을 향상 시킬 것으로 기대한다.

  • USN이 적용되는 분야가 확장되고, 연구가 활발히 이루어짐에 따라, 다수개의 USN이 상호 혼재하는 단계를 거쳐, 하나의 USN을 통해 다수의 응용서비스가 제공되는 단계로 진화될 것으로 전망된다. 따라서 하나의 USN에서 전달하는 데이터 패턴은 드문 데이터 리포팅, 연속적인 정보 모니터링, 이벤트 드리븐 데이터, 쿼리를 기반으로 하는 데이터 등의 여러 패턴이 혼재하게 될 것이다. 이러한 데이터 패턴들은 각 각이 요구하는 지연, 에러 비율, 전송률 등의 QoS 특성이 다르게 된다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이런 환경에서 적합한 QoS를 보장해 줄 수 있는 MAC 프로토콜을 제안하였다. 제안된 알고리즘은 여러 응용에 맞춰 서비스를 제공하기 때문에 불필요한 에너지의 소비를 줄일 수 있다.

FANET에서 UAV간 링크 상태 예측에 기반한 라우팅 기법 (Routing Method based on Prediction of Link State between UAVs in FANET)

  • Today, the application area and scope of FANET(Flying Ad Hoc Network) has been extended. As a result, FANET related research are actively conducted, but there is no decision yet as the routing protocol for FANET. In this paper, we propose the OLSR-Pds (Prediction with direction and speed) which is added a method to predict status of link for OLSR protocol. The mobility of nodes are modeled using Gauss-Markov algorithm, and relative speed between nodes were calculated by derive equation of movement, and thereby we can predict link status. An experiment for comparing AODV, OLSR and, OLSR-Pds was conducted by three factors such as packet delivery ratio, end to end delay, and routing overhead. In experiment result, we were confirm that OLSR-Pds performance are superior in these three factors. OLSR-Pds has the disadvantage that requires time-consuming calculations for link state and required for computing resources, but we were confirm that OLSR-Pds is suitable for routing to the FANET environment because it has all the characteristics of proactive protocol and reactive protocol.

SDL 도구를 이용한 WTP 프로토콜의 구현 및 시험 (Implementation and Testing of the WTP Protocol using SDL Tools)

  • 본 논문에서는 SDT를 이용하여, WAP 포럼에서 제안한 WTP 프로토콜을 설계, 검증 및 구현하였다. 이를 위하여 무선 트랜잭션 프로토콜을 형식 명세 언어인 SDL로 모델링하였으며, UDP 플랫폼상에서 동작하는 무선 트랜잭션 프로토콜 소프트웨어를 생성하기 위한 환경함수를 설계 및 구현하였다. 또한, 무선 트랜잭션 프로토콜 서비스를 사용하여 통신 응용 프로그램을 작성할 수 있도록 개발 환경을 제공하기 위해 응용프로그래밍 인터페이스를 설계하였다. 그리고 시험 도구인 ITEX를 이용하여 구현된 프로토콜이 규격에 일치하여 동작하는지 검사하는 적합성 시험을 수행하였다. 이를 위하여 시험 언어인 TTCN으로 추상적 시험 스위트를 작성하였고 시험 언어 컴파일러를 이용하여 실행 가능한 시험 스위트를 생성하였다.

  • Today's robots consist of many hardware and software subsystems, depending on the functions needed for specific tasks. Integration of subsystems can require a great deal of effort, as both the communication method and protocol of the subsystem can vary. This paper proposes an expandable robotic system in which all subsystems are integrated under Robot Operation System (ROS) framework. To achieve this, the paper presents a software library, ROS_M, developed to implement the TCP/IP-based ROS communication protocol in different control environments such as MCU and RT kernel based embedded system. Then, all the subsystem including hardware can use ROS protocol consistently for communication, which makes adding new software or hardware subsystems to the robotic system easier. A latency measurement experiment reveals that the system built for loop control can be used in a soft real-time environment. Finally, an expandable mobile manipulator robot is introduced as an application of the proposed system. This robot consists of four subsystems that operate in different control environments.

LEACH 프로토콜 기반 망 수명 개선 알고리즘 (Algorithm Improving Network Life-time Based on LEACH Protocol)

  • 본 논문에서는 환경 감시 등 무선 센서네트워크 응용을 위한 LEACH 프로토콜 기반의 망 수명 개선 알고리즘을 제안한다. 첫 째, LEACH 프로토콜에 따른 클러스터 구성시 각 클러스터에 노드 수를 균등하게 배분한다. 둘째, 클러스터 형성시 각 클러스터별로 헤더 역할을 담당할 노드의 순서를 설정한다. 이후, 정해진 순서에 따라 헤더가 일정 수의 패킷을 수신후 다음 노드에게 헤더 역할을 양도한다. 이렇게 함으로써 각 노드의 에너지 소비를 균등하게 하여 망 전체의 수명이 증대되도록 하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과 망 수명은 LEACH에 비해 두 배 증가하였고 망 전체의 에너지 소비는 1/4로 감소됨을 보여주었다.

  • As the power system develops rapidly into a smarter and more flexible state, so must the communication technologies that support it. Machine to machine (M2M) communication in Smart Grid environment has been discussed in European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The power system is not easily replaceable, due to system replacement cost. The M2M gateway is required in other to improve interoperability in M2M environment. The Distributed Network Protocol 3.0 (DNP3.0) is the most important standard in the SCADA systems for the power. It has been used for device data collection/control in Substation Systems, Distribution Automation System. If the DNP3.0 data model is combined with a set of contemporary web protocols, it can result in a major shift. We selected Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) based on RESTful as M2M protocol. It is a specialized web transfer protocol for use with constrained nodes and constrained networks. We have used the OPNET Modeler 17.1 in order to verity the SOAP versus CoAP. In this paper, we propose the CoAP-based M2M Gateway to Distribution Automation system using DNP3.0 in Smart Grid Environment.
