OVERVIEW OF KOMPSAT APPLICATION PRODUCT VALIDATION SITE AND THE RELATED ACTIVITIES

  • In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for improved accuracy and reliability of Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) data. Most of the data users in the field of remote sensing require understanding of product accuracy and uncertainty. Especially, EOS application products should be validated for practical application in the field. In order to evaluate the availability and applicability of application products, it will be necessary to establish a systematic validation system including techniques, equipments, ground truth data, etc. The Product Validation Site (PVS) for generation and validation of KOMPSAT application products was designed and established with various in-situ equipment and dataset. This paper presents the status of PVS and summarizes some results from experiment studies at PVS.

  • Photogrammetry is one of the most important sources of GIS application. Nowadays, color photos are used and camera is integrated with GPS/INS sensors. However the photos are still taken from analogue camera and scanned for digital image. For the convenient and accurate image application especially for 3D, airborne digital camera images is essential. In this paper, digital image calibration process with GPS/INS and its accuracy evaluation was presented.

  • The design and application of optimal control technique to the rotary shearing system is mentioned in this paper. To maximize the accuracy in both shearing length and blade speed at shearing, time-varying gain patterns for closed loop control are designed on the basis of fixed terminal time constrained optimal regulator. The performance accuracy in real application has greatly improved than the conventional way of shearing control.

  • For evaluation of rotational accuracy performance of high speed machine tool spindle system, the characteristics of main spindle and tool motion behavior are presented by means of three point accuracy testing method. The results of experiments and analyses are as follows: (1) The high speed spindle rotational accuracy can be evaluated by the combination of the spindle and tool motion behavior. (2) The spindle motion behavior increases up to more that 4 times the tool motion behavior. (3) For the influence of oil viscosity on spindle and tool taper application, 32 cSt of oil viscosity showed the most satisfactory result for rotational accuracy. (4) In order to improve the rotational accuracy of high speed machine tool spindle system, it is needed to reduce the combination error. This can be achieved by improving the working accuracy and supplying the proper lubrication with contact area at the spindle and tool.

A Study on the Application of Fashion-Related Internet Web Sites and Their Evaluation (패션관련 인터넷 사이트의 활용실태 및 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the application of fashion-related web sites and their evaluation. 76 college students major in fashion design were surveyed and the evaluation criteria were classified into five categories such as the accuracy/reliability, the design of a picture, the ease of application, the communication/security, and additional services. The results of this study were as follows: 1. College students used web sites mostly to search for fashion trend information from magazine and fashion information sites. 2. While the media site was excellent in the evaluation criteria such as the accuracy/reliability, the design of a picture and the communication/security, the fashion information site was excellent in the evaluation criteria such as the accuracy/reliability, communication/ security and additional services. 3. The media site and the fashion information site generally ranked high and the fashion brand site ranked low in most evaluation items. 4. By the results of ANOVA, 12 items showed significant differences out of the total 19 items. 5. Out of the total evaluation items, the design of a picture ranked highest and the external link function ranked lowest.

  • GPS Navigation Solutions are used for operational orbit determination for the KOMPSAT-1 spacecraft. GPS point position data are definitely affected by systematic errors as well as noise. Indeed, the systematic error effects tend to be longer term since the GPS spacecrafts have periods of 12 hours. And then, the overlap method of determining orbit accuracy is always optimistic because of the presence of systematic errors with longer term effects. In this paper, we investigated the measurement noise and the system error for the KOMPSAT-l GPS Navigation Solutions. To assess orbit accuracy with this type of data, we use longer data arcs such as 5-7 days instead of 30 hour data arc. For this assessment, we should require much more attention to drag and solar radiation drag parameters or even general acceleration parameters in order to assess orbit accuracy with longer data arcs. Thus, the effects of the consideration of the drag, solar radiation drag, and general acceleration parameters were also investigated.

Evaluation of accuracy of Self-reported Information in Pesticide Exposure Assessment (농약노출 평가에 사용되는 자가 보고의 정확성 평가)

  • Objective: This study aimed to test the accuracy of self-reported information used in indirect estimation of pesticide exposure. Methods: To do so, self-reported values on the duration of pesticide application per day were compared with observed values. The number of days of pesticide application per year as recorded in self-administered logs was compared with recalled values. Results: It was found that participants underestimated the duration and frequency of actual pesticide use. High correlations were found between self-reported values and observed values, as well as between recalled values and recorded values. Conclusions: The reason might be that farmers unconsciously under-recall the application of pesticide since many customers prefer eco-friendly agricultural products. Farmers thought the task of applying pesticides to be essential, and this may explain why the participants in this study tended to accurately recall their pesticide-related work.

Automatic Road Extraction by Gradient Direction Profile Algorithm (GDPA) using High-Resolution Satellite Imagery: Experiment Study

  • In times of the civil uses of commercialized high-resolution satellite imagery, applications of remote sensing have been widely extended to the new fields or the problem solving beyond traditional application domains. Transportation application of this sensor data, related to the automatic or semiautomatic road extraction, is regarded as one of the important issues in uses of remote sensing imagery. Related to these trends, this study focuses on automatic road extraction using Gradient Direction Profile Algorithm (GDPA) scheme, with IKONOS panchromatic imagery having 1 meter resolution. For this, the GDPA scheme and its main modules were reviewed with processing steps and implemented as a prototype software. Using the extracted bi-level image and ground truth coming from actual GIS layer, overall accuracy evaluation and ranking error-assessment were performed. As the processed results, road information can be automatically extracted; by the way, it is pointed out that some user-defined variables should be carefully determined in using high-resolution satellite imagery in the dense or low contrast areas. While, the GDPA method needs additional processing, because direct results using this method do not produce high overall accuracy or ranking value. The main advantage of the GDPA scheme on road features extraction can be noted as its performance and further applicability. This experiment study can be extended into practical application fields related to remote sensing.

Development of a high precision CNC lathe for mirror surface machining (경면가공용 고정밀 CNC 선반 개발)

  • In this paper, the development of a precision CNC lathe prototype for mirror surface machining is presented. To obtain high precision machining accuracy, a hydrostatically supported precision spindle and a sliding guideway with turcite pad are adopted as the motion elements. The machining accuracy of the prototype machine, and the motional accuracy of its motion elements are tested and evaluated to confirm the validity of the application of these elements on the prototype. The hydrostatic spindle shows 0.09 .mu. m of rotational accuracy and the guideway shows about 0.8 .mu. m/170mm of horizontal straightness. The sur- face roughness of cupper and aluminium cylinder machined by the prototype machine with diamond tool are 0.07 .mu. m and 0.10 .mu. m Rmax respectively. From these results, it is verified that the prototype lathe is avail- able for high precision machining.
