  • Depth recovery in robot vision is an essential problem to infer the three dimensional geometry of scenes from a sequence of the two dimensional images. In the past, many studies have been proposed for the depth estimation such as stereopsis, motion parallax and blurring phenomena. Among cues for depth estimation, depth from lens translation is based on shape from motion by using feature points. This approach is derived from the correspondence of feature points detected in images and performs the depth estimation that uses information on the motion of feature points. The approaches using motion vectors suffer from the occlusion or missing part problem, and the image blur is ignored in the feature point detection. This paper presents a novel approach to the defocus technique based depth from lens translation using sequential SVD factorization. Solving such the problems requires modeling of mutual relationship between the light and optics until reaching the image plane. For this mutuality, we first discuss the optical properties of a camera system, because the image blur varies according to camera parameter settings. The camera system accounts for the camera model integrating a thin lens based camera model to explain the light and optical properties and a perspective projection camera model to explain the depth from lens translation. Then, depth from lens translation is proposed to use the feature points detected in edges of the image blur. The feature points contain the depth information derived from an amount of blur of width. The shape and motion can be estimated from the motion of feature points. This method uses the sequential SVD factorization to represent the orthogonal matrices that are singular value decomposition. Some experiments have been performed with a sequence of real and synthetic images comparing the presented method with the depth from lens translation. Experimental results have demonstrated the validity and shown the applicability of the proposed method to the depth estimation.

  • There are so many methods to estimate the groundwater recharge. These methods can be categorized into four groups. First groupis related to the water balance analysis, second group is concerned with baseflow/springflow recession, and third group is interested in some types of tracers; environmental tracers and/or temperature profile. The limitation of these types of methods is that the estimated results of recharge are presented in the form of an average over some time period. Forth group has a little different approach. They use the time series data of hydraulic head and specific yield evaluated from field test, and the results of estimation are described in the sequential form. But their approach has a serious problem. The estimated results in forth typeof methods are generally underestimated because they cannot consider the discharge phase of water table fluctuation coupled with the recharge phase. Ketchum el. at. (2000) proposed calibrated method, considering recharge- and discharge-coupled water table fluctuation. But the dischargeis considered just as the areal average with discharge rate. On the other hand, there are many methods to estimate the source wavelet with observed data set in geophysics/signal processing and geophysical methods are rarely applied to the estimation of groundwater recharge. The purpose this study is the evaluation of the applicability of one of the geophysical method in the estimation of sequential recharge rate. The applied geophysical method is called minimum entropy deconvolution (MED). For this purpose, numerical modeling with linearized Boussinesq equation was applied. Using the synthesized hydraulic head through the numerical modeling, the relative sequenceof recharge is calculated inversely. Estimated results are very concordant with the applied recharge sequence. Cross-correlations between applied recharge sequence and the estimated results are above 0.985 in all study cases. Through the numerical test, the availability of MED in the estimation of the recharge sequence to groundwater was investigated

  • In this study, it is an object to develop a regression model for the estimation of TOC (total organic carbon) concentration using investigated data for three years from 2010 to 2012 in the Gam Stream unit watershed, and applied in 2009 to verify the applicability of the regression model. TOC and $COD_{Mn}$ (chemical oxygen demand) were appeared to be derived the highest correlation. TOC was significantly correlated with 5 variables including BOD (biological oxygen demand), discharge, SS (suspended solids), Chl-a (chlorophyll a) and TP (total phosphorus) of p<0.01. As a result of PCA (principal component analysis) and FA (factor analysis), COD, TOC, SS, discharge, BOD and TP have been classified as a first factor. TOCe concentration was estimated using the model developed as an independent variable $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$. R squared value between TOC and measurement TOC is 0.745 and 0.822, respectively. The independent variable were added step by step while removing lower importance variable. Based on the developed optimal model, R squared value between measurement value and estimation value for TOC was 0.852. It was found that multiple independent variables might be a better the estimation of TOC concentration using the regression model equation(in a given sites).

  • This paper presents two methods for automatic estimation of threshold values in unsupervised change detection of multi-temporal remote sensing images. The proposed methods consist of two analytical steps. The first step is to compute the parameters of a 3-component Gaussian mixture model from difference or ratio images. The second step is to determine a threshold value using Bayesian rule for minimum error. The first method which is an extended version of Bruzzone and Prieto' method (2000) is to apply an Expectation-Maximization algorithm for estimation of the parameters of the Gaussian mixture model. The second method is based on an iterative thresholding algorithm that successively employs thresholding and estimation of the model parameters. The effectiveness and applicability of the methods proposed here were illustrated by two experiments and one case study including the synthetic data sets and KOMPSAT-1 EOC images. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods can effectively estimate the model parameters and the threshold value determined shows the minimum overall error.

  • Rainfall is an important input to hydrological models. The accuracy of hydrological studies for water resources and floods management depend primarily on the estimation of rainfall. Thailand is among the countries that have regularly affected by floods. Flood forecasting and warning are necessary to prevent or mitigate loss and damage. Merging near real time satellite-based precipitation estimation with relatively high spatial and temporal resolutions to ground gauged precipitation data could contribute to reducing uncertainty and increasing efficiency for flood forecasting application. This study tested the applicability of satellite-based rainfall for water resources management and flood forecasting. The objectives of the study are to assess uncertainty associated with satellite-based rainfall estimation, to perform bias correction for satellite-based rainfall products, and to evaluate the performance of the bias-corrected rainfall data for the prediction of flood events. This study was conducted using a case study of Thai catchments including the Chao Phraya, northeastern (Chi and Mun catchments), and the eastern catchments for the period of 2006-2015. Data used in the study included daily rainfall from ground gauges, telegauges, and near real time satellite-based rainfall products from TRMM, GSMaP and PERSIANN CCS. Uncertainty in satellite-based precipitation estimation was assessed using a set of indicators describing the capability to detect rainfall event and efficiency to capture rainfall pattern and amount. The results suggested that TRMM, GSMaP and PERSIANN CCS are potentially able to improve flood forecast especially after the process of bias correction. Recommendations for further study include extending the scope of the study from regional to national level, testing the model at finer spatial and temporal resolutions and assessing other bias correction methods.

  • The weight estimation and calculation of FPSO topsides is first performed at the bidding stage of projects. At this time, it is difficult to estimate and calculate accurately the weight because most of items of FPSO are not apparently defined. Especially, in the case of the pipe rack module, its portion of the total weight and the range of weight variation are large due to special features of piping and electric equipment in the module. Thus, it is very important to estimate and calculate accurately its weight in the task of the weight estimation and calculation of FPSO topsides. In this study, the past data for the weight of the pipe rack module were collected and analyzed, the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) for the pipe rack module was constructed, and primary variables and secondary variables for developing a weight estimation and calculation model were selected. That is, after analyzing the past data, the volume was selected as the primary variable and the regression analysis was performed based on the variable. Then, several secondary variables were selected and incorporated into a weight estimation and calculation model. At this time, the weight per discipline was assumed from ratios of the total weight. Finally, the weight of the pipe rack module was estimated and calculated by using the developed model. As a result, the deviation from the model was better than that (-20 % ~ 60 %) of other studies about the weight estimation and calculation of FPSO topsides. Thus, the validity and applicability of the weight estimation and calculation of the pipe rack could be checked.

  • It is critical to develop a core ITS technology such as real-time travel time estimation in order that the efficient use of the ITS implementation can be achieved as the ITS infrastructure and relevant facilities are broadly installed in recent years. The provision of travel time information in real-time allows travellers to make informed decisions and hence not only the traveller's travel utilities but also the road utilization can be maximized. In this paper, a hybrid model is proposed to combine VDS and AVI which have different characteristics in terms of space and time dimensions. The proposed model can incorporate the immediacy of VDS data and the reality of AVI data into one single framework simultaneously. In addition, the solution algorithm is made to have no significant computational burden so that the model can be deployable in real world. A set of real field data is used to analyze the reliability and applicability of the proposed model. The analysis results suggest that the proposed model is very efficient computationally and improves the accuracy of the information provided, which demonstrates the real-time applicability of the proposed model. In particular, the data fusion methodology developed in this paper is expected to be used more widely when a new type of traffic data becomes available.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate shear wave velocity of rockfill materials by making practical use of the micro-earthquake records which are ordinarily obtained at a domestic rockfill dam and to verify its applicability. Micro-earthquake records were obtained at the site of Heongseong dam and Soyanggang dam, which are the existing multi-purpose dams in Korea. In the previous study, the fundamental periods of each dam were already evaluated by analyzing the response spectrum of the observed records. In this study, numerical analyses varying shear moduli of rockfill zone were carried out using the acceleration histories measured at the abutment as input ground motions. From comparison between the fundamental periods calculated by numerical analyses and measured records, the shear wave velocities with depth were estimated. It is found that the effect of different earthquake events on shear wave velocity estimation for the target dam materials is negligible and the shear wave velocity can be consistently evaluated. Furthermore, comparing the shear wave velocity with the previous researchers' empirical relationships and field test results, applicability of suggested method is verified. Therefore, in case that it is impossible to conduct field tests and estimation is preliminary, the suggested method can be practically used.

  • Climate change on the Korean peninsula is progressing faster than the global average. For example, typhoons, extreme rainfall, heavy snow, cold, and heatwave that are occurring frequently. North Korea is particularly vulnerable to climate change-related natural disasters such as flooding and flooding due to long-term food shortages, energy shortages, and reckless deforestation and development. In addition, North Korea is classified as an unmeasured area due to political and social influences, making it difficult to obtain sufficient hydrologic data for hydrological analysis. Also, as interest in climate change has increased, studies on climate change have been actively conducted on the Korean Peninsula in various repair facilities and disaster countermeasures, but there are no cases of research on North Korea. Therefore, this study selects watershed characteristic variables that are easy to acquire in order to apply localization model to North Korea where it is difficult to obtain observed hydrologic data and estimates parameters based on meteorological and topographical characteristics of 16 dam basins in South Korea. Was calculated. In addition, as a result of reviewing the applicability of the parameter estimation equations calculated for the fifty thousand, Gangneungnamdaecheon, Namgang dam, and Yeonggang basins, the applicability of the parameter estimation equations to North Korea was very high.

  • This study presented a surface water quality modeling framework considering the spatial resolution of pollutant load estimation to better represent stream water quality characteristics in the Saemangeum watershed which has been focused on keeping its water resources sustainable after the Saemangeum embankment construction. The watershed delineated into 804 sub-watersheds in total based on the administrative districts, which were units for pollutant load estimation and counted as 739 in the watershed, Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and agricultural structures such as drainage canal. The established model consists of 7 Mangyung (MG) sub-models, 7 Dongjin (DJ) sub-models, and 3 Reclaimed sub-models, and the sub-models were simulated in a sequence of upstream to downstream based on its connectivity. The hydrologic calibration and validation of the model were conducted from 14 flow stations for the period of 2009 and 2013 using an automatic calibration scheme. The model performance to the hydrologic stations for calibration and validation showed that the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) ranged from 0.66 to 0.97, PBIAS were -31.0~16.5 %, and $R^2$ were from 0.75 to 0.98, respectively in a monthly time step and therefore, the model showed its hydrological applicability to the watershed. The water quality calibration and validation were conducted based on the 29 stations with the water quality constituents of DO, BOD, TN, and TP during the same period with the flow. The water quality model were manually calibrated, and generally showed an applicability by resulting reasonable variability and seasonality, although some exceptional simulation results were identified in some upstream stations under low-flow conditions. The spatial subdivision in the model framework were compared with previous studies to assess the consideration of administrative boundaries for watershed delineation, and this study outperformed in flow, but showed a similar level of model performance in water quality. The framework presented here can be applicable in a regional scale watershed as well as in a need of fine-resolution simulation.
