Improvement and validation of a flow model for conical vortices

  • Separation bubble and conical vortices on a large-span flat roof were observed in this study through the use of flow visualization. The results indicated that separation bubble occurred when the flow was normal to the leading edge of the flat roof. Conical vortices that occur under the cornering flow were observed near the leading edge, and their appearance was influenced by the wind angle. When the wind changed from along the diagonal to deviating from the diagonal of the roof, the conical vortex close to the approaching flow changed from circular to be more oblong shaped. Based on the measured velocities in the conical vortices by flow visualization, a proposed two-dimensional vortex model was improved and validated by simplifying the velocity profile between the vortex and the potential flow region. Through measured velocities and parameters of vortices, the intensities of conical vortices and separation bubble on a large-span flat roof under different wind directions were provided. The quasi-steady theory was corrected by including the effect of vortices. With this improved two-dimensional vortex model and the corrected quasi-steady theory, the mean and peak suction beneath the cores of the conical vortices and separation bubble can be predicted, and these were verified by measured pressures on a larger-scale model of the flat roof.

  • A mechanical face seal is most commonly used to seal liquids and gases at various speeds, pressures and temperatures. The primary seal ring is in sliding contact with the seal seat and as a result heat in the vicinity of the interface is generated. Local temperatures at points along the circumferential direction will fluctuate as asperities on the surfaces pass. This kind of fluctuation of temperature has been investigated to take place. This may lead to the hot spots phenomenon between the contacting asperities. Sibley and Allen showed photographic evidence of systemically moving hot spots in the contact zone. The appearance of such a temperature disturbance has been attributed to a kind of thermoelastic instabilities between two surfaces: This involves a feedback loop which comprises localized elevation of frictional heating, resultant localized thermal bulding, localized pressure increase as the result of the bulging and futher elevation of frictional heating as the result of the pressure increase. The heating of hot spots will be continued until the expanded material due to the frictional heating is worn off. Therefore to predict the speed of temperature propagation into the body is essential to the analysis of heat transfer on the edge of the seal.

Estimates of Latent Heat and Sensible Heat Fluxes using Satellite data

  • Latent and sensible heat fluxes over the global oceans are estimated using SSM/I (Special Sensor Microwave Imager) and AVHRR MCSST (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Multi-Channel Sea Surface Temperature). The heat fluxes are computed from SSM/I wind speeds and surface humidity, the MCSST, and NCEP Reanalysis sea level pressures and 2-m temperatures from 1996 to 1997. The diabatic conditions bulk formula (Kondo, 1975) is used to compute the heat fluxes. To validate, the derived fluxes are compared to the measurements of 3 JMA buoys. The wind speeds and surface humidity derived from SSM/I have accuracies of 1.37m/s and 1.7g/kg, respectively. The heat fluxes were estimated these factors and the standard error of the latent and sensible heat fluxes are 5.53 W/m$^2$ and 3.33 W/m$^2$. The latest El-Nino phenomenon started at the beginning of 1997 and this event was larger than any others. We compare the heat fluxes in 1997 with the fluxes in 1996 and investigate the spatial movement of meteorological factors as well as the heat fluxes associated with El-Nino appearance.

현장계측을 통한 블럭식 보강토 옹벽의 거동분석 (Analysis of the Segmental Reinforced Retaining Wall Behavior by Field Monitoring)

  • 1990년대 후반부터는 시공의 간편성과 유연한 벽면 형상이 가능한 블럭식 보강토 옹벽의 시공사례가 급격히 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 그러나, 기존의 연구자료와 비교해 볼 때 블럭의 형태, 보강재, 보강재와 블록의 연결형태, 뒤채움재에 따라 상이한 거동을 할 개연성이 있다. 따라서, 이 연구는 블럭식 보강토 옹벽의 거동을 수평 수직 토압계, 경사계, 침하판, 스트레인 게이지, 변형핀 등의 계측기를 설치하여 시공중과 시공후의 보강토 옹벽의 거동을 평가하였다. 또한, 현장에 적용된 보강토 옹벽의 설계 프로그램인 SRWall에 의해 산정된 안전율과 이론에 의해 도출된 안전율을 상호 비교함으로써 현장 계측결과와 설계프로그램에 의한 안전성을 검증하였다. 9개월 동안의 현장계측을 통한 연구 결과를 종합해보면, 블럭식 보강토 옹벽은 양호한 다짐관리와 시공기간의 장기화로 인한 변위는 매우 미미한 것으로 판명되었다. SRWall을 활용하여 도출한 안전율과 보강토 옹벽의 안전율을 평가한 결과 이론에 의해 도출한 안전율과 유사한 것으로 판명되었다.

히스타민 투여시 토끼 뇌척수액으로의 물질 출현율 (Appearance Rates of Several Substances into Cerebrospinal Fluid of Histamine-treated Rabbits)

  • The appearance rates of antipyrine and urea into cerebrospinal fluid from blood were studied in the rabbits which were in the state of hypotension and of high permeability in the capillary beds following injection of histamine. The alteration in the distribution of electrolytes among various compartments of the brain and the permeability characteristics in the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier were also observed. Adult male rabbits, weighing around 2 kg, were used. Twenty four rabbits were divided into 3 groups. Besides the control group, histamine treated rabbits were categorized into 2 groups. $H_1$ consisted of the rabbits showing moderate responses to histamine and ranging from 62 to 80 mmHg in their mean anterial blood pressure. The animals which belong to $H_2-group$ showed severe responses to histamine and the mean anterial blood pressures dropped to 30-50 mmHg. Animals were anesthetized with nembutal, 30mg/kg i.v. The mean arterial blood pressure was read by means of the mercury manometer connected to the femoral artery. The animals, treated with histamine, were kept in hypotensive state at least for 40 minutes before the administration of the test-substances. The test-substances, 300 mg of urea and 200 mg of antipyrine, were dissolved in 3 ml of distilled water and were injected into the ear vein of the rabbit. After 10 minutes elapsed arterial blood sample was taken from the femoral artery and cerebrospinal fluid from the cisterna magna. Brain tissues were also analysed with respect to electrolytes in order to observe the disturbances in the electrolytes balance as well as in the function of the central nervous system. The results obtained were as follow: 1. The ratio of antipyrine concentration in cerebrospinal fluid to that of arterial blood plasma, that was the distribution ratio, was close to unity, revealing a well established equilibrium between the compartments of blood and cerebrospinal fluid in 10 minutes. In other words, there was no diffusion barrier with regard to antipyrine. The ratios over unity which were frequently seen in the histamine treated animals were attributable to the early penetration of the substance into the cerebrospinal fluid. 2. The appearance rates of urea into the cerebrospinal fluid in the histamine treated rabbits were higher in comparison with those of in the control animals. The increasing tendency in the rates was particularly remarkable in the $H_2-group$, showing the enhanced penetration of urea across the boondary. 3. In the htisamine treated $H_2-group$ the concentration of potassium in the blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid well exceeded the control values and showed 8.5 and 9.0 mEq/l in average, respectively. Simultaneous drops in the brain tissue water were noticed, suggesting the leakage of intracellular potassium. 4. There was a coincidence in the rising pattern of potassium in the blood plasma and in the cerebrospinal fluid of $H_2-group$ and at least partial removal of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier with respect to potassium was suggested in these animals. 5. The concentration of sodium in the blood plasma or in the cerebrospinal fluid showed no significant changes following histamine injection. However, sodium in the brain tissue revealed slight elevation in the histamine treated groups. 6. The ratios of the concentrations of potassium to those of sodium, [K]/[Na] in the brain tissues, were 1.92 in the control 1.82 in the $H_1$ and 1.52 in the $H_2-group$, respectively. The marked drop in the $H_2-group$ might represent neural dysfunction in the extremely hypotensive rabbits.

고압$\cdot$저온 가스 배관에서 수분에 의한 하이드레이트 플러깅 형성 (A Study on the Formation of Hydrate Plugging due to water molecules in High Pressure and Low Temperature Gas Pipeline)

  • 가스 하이드레이트는 메탄, 에탄, 프로판, 부탄 등과 같은 천연가스-성분이 물에 의해 포획된 얼움형태의 고체연료로서, 세계적으로 가스 하이드레이트 추정 매장량은 기존 화석연료 매장량에 비해 약 2배 이상인 것으로 예측되어 미래의 신 에너지 자원으로 기대되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 에너지 자원측면과는 반대로 파이프라인을 통한 가스 수송과정에서 형성된 하이드레이트는 유동저해나 배관손상을 유발 할 수 있는 요인으로 영구동토지연인 시베리아는 물론이고 북해와 멕시코만 등의 여러 유전이나 가스전에서 심각한 문제를 발생시키고 있다. 해저 가스 파이프라인이나 동토지역을 통과하는 가스 파이프라인에서는 관내 압력과 온도에 따라 하이드레이트가 생성될 수 있으며, 특히 송출압력을 높게 할 경우에는 파이프라인 안에 하이드레이트가 생성될 가능성은 더욱 높아져, 플러깅 형성에 의한 유동저해 및 배관손상이 예상된다. 본 연구에서는 실제 파이프라인 내부에서 하이드레이트로 인한 플러깅 생성 메카니즘을 규명하고 이에 대한 형성조건을 측정함으로써, 그 방지기준 및 방지책을 선정하는데 활용하고자 실험실 규모의 환상형 파이프라인 실험장치를 개발하려다. 개발된 실험장치를 통해 파이프라인에서의 하이드레이트 평형조건을 도출하고, 다양한 속도 및 압력 조건하에서 하이드레이트 플러깅 형성온도를 측정하였다 이를 통해 유통속도 및 압력, 온도에 관한 상관관계를 파악하고 그 경향을 도출함으로써 실제 가스 파이프라인에의 하이드레이트 플러깅 형성조건을 파악할 수 있었다.

성장기 아동의 혈압과 뇨중 Sodium 배설에 관한 연구 (Urinary Sodium and Blood Pressure in Korean Children)

  • 본 연구는 성장기 아동의 뇨 중 sodium, potassium 및 creatinine 배설량과 혈압과 관련되는 제 요인간의 상관성을 조사하기 위하여 실시되었다. 12세부터 16세 사이의 성장기 아동 64명(남학생 41명, 여학생 23명)을 대상으로 하여 24시간 분의 뇨를 3회에 걸쳐 수집하였고 혈압과 맥박수를 측정하였으며 고혈압에 대한 가족력을 조사하였다. 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1) 체중 및 신장은 남학생이 $40.8{\pm}6.9kg$, $152.0{\pm}8.2cm$, 여학생이 $40.3{\pm}4.7kg$, $152.3{\pm}4.8cm$ 이었으며 한국소아발육표준치와 근사한 경향이었다. 상완위는 남학생이 $21.6{\pm}1.9cm$, 여학생이 $23.1{\pm}1.8cm$로 여학생이 남학생보다 유의하게$(p{\leqq}0.05)$높았다. 2) 수축기혈압은 남학생이 $102.3{\pm}12.8mmEg$, 여학생이 $95.5{\pm}10.7mmEg$이었고 확장기혈압은 남학생이 $49.7{\pm}9.6mmEg$, 여학생이 $58.2{\pm}10.1mmHg$로서 확장기혈압은 남학생이 유의있게 $(p{\leqq}0.05)$높았다. 3) 뇨 중 sodium 및 potassium 배설량은 남학생이 $132.8{\pm}45.4mEg/day$, $42.1{\pm}15.0mEg/day$이었고, 여학생이 $126.4{\pm}41.9mEg/day$, $41.3{\pm}13.9mEg/day$이었다. sodium 배설량으로부터 추정한 식염섭취량은 남녀 각각 9.1gm, 8.7gm 이었다. 뇨 중 creatinine 배설랑은 남학생이 $795.7{\pm}292.5mg/day$이었고 여학생이 $744.3{\pm}206.6mg/day$이었다. 4) 수축기혈압은 체중 $(p{\leqq}0.001,\;r=0.4735)$, 신장$(p{\leqq}0.001,\;r=0.4653)$ 및 creatinine 배설량$(p{\leqq}0.01,\;r=0.2726)$과 상관을 나타내었으며 sodium 배설량과는 상관을 보이지 않았다. 확장기혈압은 상완위$(p{\leqq}0.01,\;r=0.3135)$와 상관을 나타내었고 potassium 배설량 $(p{\leqq}0.05,\;r=-0.2594)$과는 부적 상관을 나타내었다. 5) 고혈압 가족력의 보유력은 28.1%이었으며 가족력 유 무집단 수축기혈압은 유의차를 보이지 않았으나 확장기 혈압이 유의있게$(p{\leqq}0.005)$높았다.
