  • Samples of Ta-doped in $In_2O_3-ZnO-SnO_2$(IZTO) with a doping level up to 4wt% were sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ in $O_2$. The crystal phase of the samples was identified by an X-ray diffraction experiment. apparent density and porosity with sintered temperature from $1500^{\circ}C$ to $1640^{\circ}C$ are mesured by archimedes method. For each sample, the specific resistivity was determined. samples of sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ had the highest density and lowest porousity and The Ta 0.25-wt%-doped IZTO ceramics had the lowest resistivity.

  • The aim of this paper was to investigating the effects of soil relative density, construction materials roughness, oil type (gasoil, crude oil, and used motor oil), and oil content on the internal and interface shear behavior of sand with different construction materials by means of a modified large direct shear test apparatus. Tests conducted on the soil-soil (S-S), soil-rough concrete (S-RC), soil-smooth concrete (S-SC), and soil-steel (S-ST) interfaces and results showed that the shear strength of S-S interface is always higher than the soil-material interfaces. Internal and interface friction angles of sand beds increased by increase in relative density and decreased by increasing oil content. The oil properties (especially viscosity) played a major role in interface friction behavior. Despite the friction angles of contaminated sands with viscous fluids drastically decreased, it compensated by the apparent cohesion and adhesion developed between the soil grains and construction materials.

  • In this study the reactor design procedure and method of solid-solid-gas chemical heat pump system using STELF technology were investigated. For manufacturing IMPEX block which is the kernel of reactor, proper salt pair should be selected, and equilibrium temperature drop and COP should be examined for selected salt pair. Moreover, apparent density, residual porosity, and graphite ratio should be calculated to give minimum block volume and mass, and maximum energy density without causing heat and mass transfer problems. Since heat exchange area can be changed with operating condition, reactor diameter, length, and stainless steel thickness should be decided for desired specifications. These procedure and method were applied to the case study of 6kW cold production and 8 hours storage capacity reactor.

  • The density and the viscosity of aqueous PEO solutions are observed with the several concentrations of PEO at 20 ℃. The effects of urea on them are also observed. The apparent and the partial specific volumes of PEO are calculated from the density data, which result that the polymer-polymer interaction is dominating in the binary aqueous PEO solutions, while the polymer-solvent interaction is dominating in the ternary aqueous urea-PEO solutions. It is explained by the urea induced breakage of the structured water originated from the hydrophobic interactions and the binding of the urea to the PEO chain. The concentration dependence of relative viscosity and the density dependence of fluidity is also discussed with the concept of the polymersolvent and the polymer-polymer interactions of aqueous urea-PEO solutions.

  • The paper presents an experimental study on the strength behaviour of a coral gravelly sand from Vietnam subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. A series of direct shear tests were carried out to investigate the shear strength behaviour and the factors affecting the shear strength of the sand such as relative density, cyclic load, amplitude of the cyclic load and loading rate. The study results indicate that the shear strength parameters of the coral gravelly sand include not only internal friction angle but also apparent cohesion. These parameters vary with the relative density, cyclic load, the amplitude of the cyclic load and loading rate. The shear strength increases with the increase of the relative density. The shear strength increases after subjecting to cyclic loading. The amplitude of the cyclic load affects the shear strength of coral gravelly sand, the shear strength increases as the amplitude of the cyclic load increases. The loading rate has insignificantly effect on the shear strength of the coral gravelly sand.

  • For the process control of silicon nitride gelcasting, the effect of MeOH on the apparent gel induction time of slip, drying rate, and mechanical property of gelcast body were investigated. The apparent gel induction time showed maximum at 10~20 vol% MeOH and the drying rate of gelcast body increased in the ranged of 25~40%. The gelcast body was still machinable in the 40% of MeOH, though the mechanical property and relative density slightly decreased with increasing the amount of MeOH.

  • Adquate amount of calcia was added to the regent-grade Zirconia body. Here the amount and the form of calcia were 7-21 mol% and regent-grade calcium cabonate respectively. The specimens were fired at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 0, 3, 5 and 7 hours respectively. The phase Strength X-ray diffraction analysis and Scaning electron microscopy. The results were as follows (1) As the additive amount of calcia was increased the firing linear shrinkage apparent density compressive strength and modulus of rupture decreased but the apparent porosity increased. (2) The specimens soaked and containing calcia displayed the grain growth. (3) Monoclinic and cubic zirconia were seen in the sepcimens containing 7 mol% calcia. When without soaking the specimens containing 7-10 mol% calcia had the volume change by monoclinic$\rightleftharpoons$tetragonal transformation. (4) The lattice parameter increased according as the calcia additive was increased. The specimens containing above 19mol% calcia had the costant lattice parameter. The value of that was from 5.1264 to 5.1396 $\AA$ in the case of 7 hours soaking.

  • In the present study, the protective effects of Bcl-2 over-expression in a suspension culture (without any adaptation) and spent medium (low nutrient and high toxic metabolite conditions) were investigated. In the suspension culture without prior adaptation, the viability of the control cell line fall to 0% by day 7, whereas the Bcl-2 cell line had a viability of 65%. The difference in the viability and viable cell density between the Bcl-2 and control cell lines was more apparent in the suspension culture than the static culture, and became even more apparent on day 6. Fluorescence microscopic counting revealed that the major mechanism of cell death in the control cell line in both the static and suspension cultures was apoptosis. For the Bcl-2 cell lines, necrosis was the major mode of cell death in the static culture, but apoptosis became equally important in the suspension culture. When the NS0 6A1 cell line was cultured in spent medium taken from a 14 day batch culture, the control cell line almost completely lost its viability by day 5, whereas, the Bcl-2 still had a viability of 73%. The viable cell density and viability of the Bcl-2 cell line cultivated in fresh medium were 2.2 and 2.7 fold higher, respectively, than those of the control cultures. However, the viable cell density and viability of the Bcl-2 cultivated in the spent medium were 8.7 and 7.8 fold higher, respectively, than those of the control cultures. Most of the dead cells in the control cell line were apoptotic; whereas, the major cell death mechanisms in the Bcl-2 cell line were necrotic.

  • The urbanization and increasing rate of population demands effective means of transportation system (basement and tunnels) as well as high-rise building (resting on piled foundation) for accommodation. Therefore, it unavoidable to construct basements (i.e., excavation) nearby piled foundation. Since the basement excavation inevitably induces soil movement and stress changes in the ground, it may cause differential settlements to nearby piled raft foundation. To understand settlement and load transfer mechanism in the piled raft due to excavation-induced stress release, numerical parametric studies are carried out in this study. The effects of excavation depths (i.e., formation level) relative to piled raft were investigated by simulating the excavation near the pile shaft (i.e., He/Lp=0.67), next to (He/Lp=1.00) and below the pile toe (He/Lp=1.33). In addition, effects of sand density and raft fixity condition were investigated. The computed results have revealed that the induced settlement, tilting, pile lateral movement and load transfer mechanism in the piled raft depends upon the embedded depth of the diaphragm wall. Additional settlement of the piled raft due to excavation can be account for apparent loss of load carrying capacity of the piled raft (ALPC). The highest apparent loss of piled raft capacity ALPC (on the account of induced piled raft settlement) of 50% was calculated in in case of He/Lp = 1.33. Furthermore, the induced settlement decreased with increasing the relative density from 30% to 90%. On the contrary, the tilting of the raft increases in denser ground. The larger bending moment and lateral force was induced at the piled heads in fixed and pinned raft condition.

  • Quantitative ultrasound technologies for osteoporosis diagnosis measure ultrasonic parameters such as speed of sound(SOS) and normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation(nBUA) in the calcaneus (heel bone). In the present study, the dependences of SOS and nBUA on bone mineral density in the proximal femur with high risk of fracture were investigated by using 20 trabecular bone samples extracted from bovine femurs. SOS and nBUA in the femoral trabecular bone samples were measured by using a transverse transmission method with one matched pair of ultrasonic transducers with a center frequency of 1.0 MHz. SOS and nBUA measured in the 20 trabecular bone samples exhibited high Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) of r = 0.83 and 0.72 with apparent bone density, respectively. The multiple regression analysis with SOS and nBUA as independent variables and apparent bone density as a dependent variable showed that the correlation coefficient r = 0.85 of the multiple linear regression model was higher than those of the simple linear regression model with either parameter SOS or nBUA as an independent variable. These high linear correlations between the ultrasonic parameters and the bone density suggest that the ultrasonic parameters measured in the femur can be useful for predicting the femoral bone mineral density.
