  • This study was conducted to characterize the chemical and mineralogical properties of representative phosphate rocks from North Carolina and Florida, and to find out the method for increasing the citric acid (two percent) solublility of phosphate rock. The the results are summerized as follows : 1. Major composition of phosphate rock was carbonate apatite containing small amounts of calcite and quartz. The differential thermal analysis(DTA) did not show endothermic or exothermic peak till $1,000^{\circ}C$. 2. Two percent citric acid solublility of phosphate rock was increased with the finess of particle size, but the water solublility was not affected by the particle size. Long time calcinated under high temperature had negative effect, while the incubation with 2% citric acid under low temperature had positive effect on solubility. 3. To increase the solubility of phosphate rock it was mixed with farmyard and barnyard manure and acidulated. Citrate solubility by treatment with sulfuric acid was more effective than nitric acid. Acidulation with thirty percent sulfuric acid increased both citric acid solubility and water solublility. Treatment with glutamic acid had little effect on the solubility of phosphate rock.

  • Purpose: This study attempts to compare the stability of hydroxy-apatite coating implant with that of sandblasted, large-grit and acid-etched surface implant at an early state of installation. Methods: 35 implants were installed in 18 patients, who had visited hospital for implant installation. The early stability at operation, 6 weeks and 12 weeks after operation using Osstell$^{TM}$ mentor (Integration Diagnostics, Savedalen, Sweden) and Periotest$^{(R)}$ (Siemens AG, Benssheim, Germany) were measured, and subsequently analyzed statistically. Results: OsstellTM mentor value of hydroxy-apatite coated implant (HAPTITE) was measured as $70.14{\pm}9.07$ at the stage of installation, $76.98{\pm}5.25$ at 6 weeks and $80.28{\pm}4.23$ at 12 weeks after installation. A statistically significant increase in measurement value was observed after 6 weeks and 12 weeks than when implants were placed. In case of IMPLANTIUM (DENTIUM Co. Ltd., Seoul, Korea), the measurement value was $74.68{\pm}7.42$ at installation, $79.03{\pm}4.39$ at 6 weeks and $80.59{\pm}3.59$ at 12 weeks after installation. In addition, a statistically significant increase in the value was observed when comparative analysis of the value at after installation and 12 weeks after installation was carried out. However, no significant difference between HAPTITE and IMPLANTIUM was observed. The average measurement value of periotest$^{(R)}$ was $-1.94{\pm}3.90$ at installation of HAPTITE, $-4.03{\pm}1.48$ at 6 weeks and $-5.00{\pm}1.71$ at 12 weeks after installation. Moreover, whilst comparing the value at after installation and 12 weeks after installation, statistically significant decrease in the value was observed. In case of IMPLANTIUM, the average measurement value was measured as $-4.25{\pm}1.76$ at installation, $-4.76{\pm}0.97$ at 6 weeks and $-5.18{\pm}0.91$ at 12 weeks after installation and no statistically significant difference was observed. Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was observed between HAPTITE and IMPLANTIUM. Conclusion: In this study, both the implants demonstrated favorable early stability at the time of measurement using Osstell$^{TM}$ mentor and Periotest$^{(R)}$. Moreover, based on the observed results, both HAPTITE and IMPLANTIUM are considered as potent to exhibit clinically stable and prognostic results.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the amount of calcium fluoride deposited on the enamel and dentin surface and to obtain information on the morphological change and crystallographic details of mineral deposition after 12,000ppm APF application in vitro. The bovine enamel and dentin blocks were randomly assigned to eight groups according to artificial caries lesion formation and difference of fluoride application time. The fluoride concentration and morphological characteristics on the treated enamel and dentin surface were investigated by using fluoride quantitative analysis and SEM. The powdered enamel and dentin of the intact bovine incisors were prepared for the X-ray diffraction analysis. The following results were obtained. 1. The amounts of KOH-soluble fluoride on the carious enamel and dentin surface after 24h APF application were higher than after only 5min APF application(p<0.05), but in the case of the sound enamel and dentin surface were similar after 5min and 24h application (P>0.05). The fluoride content was highly increased in the carious dentin as compared with sound dentin after APF application(P<0.05). 2. The carious enamel surface after APF application, the demineralized enamel surface were recovered a more dense enamel surface and precipitation of crystal was observed a distintive surface layer of spherical globules of about 1 m diameter. In the case of the fluorided carious dentin surface, precipitation of calcium fluoride-like material was deposited both inside the dentinal tubules as well as in the intertubular regions. 3. The crystallographic structure of powdered enamel and dentin after 24h APF application had large crystallities of apatite and CaF2 diffraction peaks in the enamel as compared with dentin. The diffraction data collected from the 27.50-29.50(2) angular range of the powdered enamel, the (105) apatite, (225) apatite and (111) CaF2 peaks of the enamel crystallities were detected after 24h APF application.

  • The purpose of this work is to develope sodium-containing nonstoichiometric apatitic coatings on solid substrate. The apatitic coatings prepared at different concentrations of sodium salt indicated that the presence of sodium ions exerted significant effects on the physicochemical properties of the apatitic coating including surface morphology, chemical state, and Ca/P ratio. The variation of these properties was sustained up to 0.01 mM of sodium ion concentration. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus was varied from 2.18 to 2.03 which indicated the apatitic coating prepared in this study was calcium-rich nonstoichiometric apatite. The structure of all the samples appeared to be low crystalline. In the presence of sodium ion within the apaptitic coating, the adhesion of human osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells was significantly promoted. On the other hand, the proliferation of the cells on the apatitic coatings was decreased with the increase of sodium ions. This reverse response of SaOS-2 cells indicates that the interaction between SaOS-2 and apatitic surface triggered considerable changes in intracellular mechanisms including cellular signal transductions.

  • To develop an artificial bone substitute that is gradually degraded and replaced by the regenerated natural bone, the authors designed and produced a composite that is consisted of calcium phosphate and collagen. Human umbilical cord origin pepsin treated type I atelocollagen was used as the structural matrix, by which sintered or non-sintered carbonate apatite was encapsulated to form an inorganic-organic composite. With cross linking atelocollagen by UV ray irradiation, the resistance to both compressive and tensile strength was increased. Collagen degradation by the collagenase induced collagenolysis was also decreased.
