Background: There are substantial differences in the mortality rates of stomach cancer among the 47 prefectures in Japan, and Aomori prefecture is one of the most severely impacted. The aims of this study were to determine the incidence and mortality rates of stomach cancer in Aomori prefecture in comparison with Japan as a whole and cast light on reasons underlying variation. Methods: Data on stomach cancer cases were extracted from the Aomori Cancer Registry Database. Incidence rates for specific stages at the time of diagnosis were cited from Monitoring of Cancer Incidence in Japan, and mortality rates for stomach cancer in Aomori prefecture and the whole of Japan were obtained from Vital Statistics. Age-standardised incidence and mortality rates were calculated using the direct method. Results: The age-standardised incidence rate of stomach cancer in Aomori prefecture was higher than in the whole of Japan for males but lower for females. However, the age-standardised mortality rates were higher in Aomori prefecture in both sexes. The proportion of localised cancers was lower in Aomori prefecture than in the whole of Japan for most age groups. Conclusions: The lower rate for localised cancer suggests that higher age-standardised mortality rates are due to delays in diagnosis, despite an attendance rate for stomach cancer screening was higher in Aomori prefecture than in the whole of Japan. One plausible explanation for the failure of successful early detection might be poor quality control during screening implementation that impedes early detection.
In order to develop a new variety of rice that adapts to the climate of Aomori prefecture and possesses characteristics suitable for production of high quality Japanese sake, artificial cross experiments were executed between Yamadanishiki, which is widely used nationwide as an authentic variety of rice for sake production, and Hanafubuki, which was peviously developed by Aomori prefecture. An excellent hybrid, named Hanaomoi, was selected and fixed by a series of selection experiments and systematic cultivation. Unpolished Hanaomoi rice contained less amount of protein than Yamadanishiki and Hanafubuki. Unpolished rice of Hanaomoi was harder than Yamadanishiri and Hanafubuki, therefore polishing treatment was done in high yield and one could obtain a high degree of polish on the rice(namely 40% polishing). These features are advantageous to production of high quality of sake.Test brewing using 40% polished Hanaomoi gave rise to a characteristic sake that contained a slightly higher amount of alcohol and flavor components than Yamadanishiki and Hanafubuki. Sensory tests concluded that sake from Hanaomoi was as superior as the one from authentic Yamadanishiki. Hanaomoi is a promising variety of rice suitable for production of a high quality sake exclusive to Aomori prefecture.
The woodceramics which are new porous carbon materials were obtained by carbonizing from thinned small log of Aomori HIBA (Thujopsis dolabrata S. et. Z. var. hondae M.) impregnated with phenol resin in a vacuum furnace. During the carbonization process, the resin changes into glassy carbon, which has superior property. The resin impregnation rate and bending strength depend on the types of board and density. In this paper, the manufacturing method of woodceramics made from thinned small logs of Aomori HIBA was introduced and some properties were examined.
A new porous carbon material "woodceramics" was developed by carbonizing wood or woody materials impregnated with thermosetting resin. Steamed board and non-steamed board were made from thinned small log of Aomori Hiba (Thujopsis dolabrata S. et. Z. var. hondae M.). They were impregnated with phenol resin and sintered in a vacuum furnace at $650^{\circ}C$. In this paper, the manufacturing method of woodceramics and changes of dimension, weight and compressive strength were investigated. The changes of dimension, weight and compressive strength depend on the types of board and density.

Byobusan area of Aomori prefecture in Japan was a marshy sand dune and had developed for agricultural land use with a large-scale sprinkler system. Recently, it becomes an agricultural problem at this area that distinctive damage with browning maculation and fissures frequently occurs in Chinese yam tubers. Acetaldehyde is one of the factor candidates of underground part damage in plants. In this study, incidence rate of the tuber damage, and the morphological character and elemental composition of the damage parts in tubers were investigated with applications of excessive irrigation water or acetaldehyde water solution into the yam field. The incidence rate of the distinctive tuber damage increased as the input amount of irrigation water was increased. At the browning maculation parts of the tubers, many fissures and damages of cork layer were observed under scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the periderm of tubers was significantly thicker in damaged parts than in non-damaged parts. Funguses, bacterium and nematodes were not observed in the damaged part under scanning electron microscopy. The weight ratio of each constituent element in an analyzed area relative to the total weight of major essential elements was measured with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The results showed that the weight ratios of boron, carbon, phosphorus, sulfur and calcium were higher in damaged parts than in non-damaged parts whereas the weight ratios of oxygen and chlorine were lower in damaged parts than in non-damaged parts. It was also shown by this spectrometry that iron, cadmium, lead and zinc were not directly involved in occurrence of the tuber damage. In this study, there was no remarkable difference of tuber appearance between non-acetaldehyde and acetaldehyde application treatments. From the above results, it is shown that the damage would be a physiological disorder induced by the input of a large quantity of water in the sandy field.
Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is one of the effective technologies for monitoring forest inventory, and importance of forestry is increasing because of its function as the sink of green house gases (GHG). This study aims at development of a methodology for better and more accurate estimation of physical parameters of individual trees by removing sudden drops of LIDAR data within a crown. Our study area is located in Aomori prefecture, the northern part of Honshu Island, with the dominant species of Japanese cedar. The results show practicality of our method in the usage of LIDAR data in the field of forest inventory.
In order to effectively use the waste wood, two types of woodceramics chip tile were made from woodceramics chip, gravel, zeolite and additions. The woodceramics chip was made from branch of apple tree (Malus pumila Mill.) Snow melting property, bending strength and compressive strength of woodceramics chip tile were tested according to the mixing rate of woodceramics chip. Snow melting properties of woodceramics chip tile increased after additions treatment but mechanical properties were reduced significantly after additions treatment. The results indicate that the additions are effective for snow melting property but negative effect on mechanical properties.
Background: In this study, we compared the incidents of humidifier disinfectants and incidents of mild hepatitis in Japan to highlight the differences in government response in the health care field in terms of "chain of responsibility". Methods: We examined whether the three mechanisms of action and the chain of responsibility hypothesis were applied to compare the cases of Korea and Japan. The incident of Japan occurred in 1987 in Misawa city, Aomori prefecture. In the 1990s, the safety of blood products increased dramatically. However, relief for infected victims was neglected. Green Cross did not notify the parties. In Korea, in the spring of 2011, a number of lung disease patients were accidentally admitted to a hospital in Seoul, and a female patient with respiratory failure symptoms expired. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted animal tests and the Ministry of Health and Welfare issued an order for forced collection of humidifier disinfectants. Results: In the case of Japan, the Ministry of Health and Welfare had to take responsibility for follow-up measures such as the investigation of the cause, so it was tied to a "chain of responsibility". However, in the case of Korea, the Ministry of Health and Welfare was free from the chain. Conclusion: Through the comparison between the cases of Japan and Korea, we confirmed that whether or not a government organization chooses to conceal responsibility depends on its past behavior, which is whether it is free from the chain of responsibility or not. Therefore, it was reaffirmed that an organization (ministry or department) free from the chain of responsibility must exist within the government.
