  • Nowadays, the discharges of urban streams during dry season are depleted because the hydrologic cycle in the watershed has been destroyed due to the expansion of the impermeable area, the excessive groundwater pumping, climate change, and so forth. The streamflow depletion may bring out severe water quality problems. This research are to investigate the hydrologic characteristics and to develop a technology to restore sound hydrologic cycle of Anyangcheon watershed. For the hydrological cycle analysis of the Anyangcheon watershed, continuous simulations of urban runoff were performed for the upstream basin of Gocheok bridge whose basin area covered 4/5 of the whole catchment area. The increase of impervious area by urbanization was analysed and its effect on urban runoff was evaluated. The SWMM 5 (Storm Water Management Model 5) was used for the continuous simulation of urban runoff. The analysis results of urbanization effect on runoff are as follows: the surface runoff in 2000 increases to 65% of the whole precipitation whereas the surface runoff in 1975 amounts to 50% of the precipitation; the groundwater runoff in 2000 amounts to 7% and shows 6% decrease during the period from 1975 to 2000.

  • This paper double-bound dichotomous choice method as a contingent valuation methods is used to derive willingness to pay for the water quality at the Anyangcheon watershed. The linear random utility model show that value of improvement of the Anyangcheon watershed water quality is 4,930 won per house and month of the Seoul and Gyeong-gi area residents. There is no difference between Seoul and Gyeong-gi area residents. Respondents overall accepted the contingent market and were willing to contribute a significant amount (3,860 to 5,101 won), on average, per household per month. The aggregate value of the water quality improvement in the Anyangcheon watershed amounts to approximately 83.0 to 109.7 billion won per year. This study is expected to contribute to the decision-making process for policy-makers by providing useful methodological framework and quantitative information related to watershed improvement projects.

  • Characteristics of water quantity and quality of the Anyangcheon were analyzed through many field measurements and the distributed hydrologic simulation model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Event mean concentrations (EMCs) and baseflow mean concentrations were calculated from the data and the daily runoff were simulated by SWAT. The runoff was divided into the direct runoff and the baseflow. Using those values and quantity and quality data of release from the wastewater treatment plant (WWPT), unit loads of BOD, COD, SS, $NO_2-N$, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, and Dis-P were derived. EMCs of BOD and SS were even higher than the baseflow mean concentrations. The total runoff from October to April (7 months) of 2004 was just 13.5%, since the rainfall usually is concentrated in summer season. Futhermore BOD and SS were loaded during the event by 50.9% and 70.9%, respectively and over three quarters of total COD, $NO_2-N$, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, and Dis-P were flowed into the Anyangcheon during the remaining period. Therefore, the efficiency of WWPT for COD, $NO_2-N$, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, and Dis-P should be intensified from Oct. to Apr. and the runoff quality management of BOD and SS should be planned during the summer season.

  • In recent years, a growing concern exists in watershed and stream improvement projects. Under these circumstances, this paper estimates monetary value of the attributes of alternatives for rehabilitation of hydrologic cycle using choice experiments. Choice experiments shows vivid image and estimates a willingness to pay based on their preference for environmental goods. A preliminary survey shows that the attributes of the Anyangcheon watershed are flood-damage possibilities, Instreamflow, water quality, river characteristic and estimates the tax for the Anyangcheon watershed improvements. We surveyed 200 citizens were selected as samples of watershed beneficing in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province and used conditional logit model to analyze the implicit values of the attributive per household. The benefit of the attributes by province based on the implicit price obtained from estimated parameters were calculated. This study is expected to contribute to the decision-making process for policy-makers by providing useful methodological framework and quantitative information related to watershed improvement projects.

  • This study developed and calculated alternative evaluation index (AEI) from the effectiveness analyses of alternatives for rehabilitation of distorted hydrologic cycle. The feasible alternatives for the poor-conditioned region in the Anyangcheon watershed were proposed and quantitatively analyzed using continuous water quantity/quality simulation model, Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF). The effectiveness analyses include 355th flow and 275th flow of flow duration curve and number of increased days to satisfy the target monthly flow for water quantity and BOD average concentration, total daily loads and number of increased days to satisfy the target concentration and total daily loads. The feasible alternatives are restoration of covered stream, prevention of streamflow loss through sewers, redevelopment of existing reservoir, reuse of treated wastewater, use of groundwater collected by subway stations and construction of small wastewater treatment plant. Therefore, alternative priority ranking was derived from AEIs. It will be effective to make an integrated watershed management for sustainable development.

  • This study developed the methodology to calculate the total daily maximum load (TMDL) using the instreamflow requirement because the previous TMDLs were too simple to easily achieve. Instreamflow requirement which was the average low flow ($Q_{275}$) in the previous planning cannot consider the seasonal variation of streamflow. Therefore, this study used the instreamflow requirement which is a maximum value among hydrologic drought flow ($Q_{355}$), and environmental flows for ecology and scenery. The environmental flows for ecology were calculated using Physical HABitat SIMulation system (PHABSIM) which can estimate the necessary flow for fish survival by life cycle. Using the proposed method, all monthly TMDLs of streams in the Anyangcheon were calculated for the application.

  • Cost-benefit analysis was conducted to propose the best alternatives for integrated watershed management. Benefits of all alternatives were estimated combining results of choice experiment method with alternative evaluation index (AEI). Choice experiment which is a kind of stated preference techniques was applied to six regions since the Anyangcheon watershed was divided into six according to spatial characteristics and conditions (potential hazard and location). Alternative of NB > 0 must be considerable since they are economically and technically feasible.

  • Botulism in wild waterfowl has been reported in many areas of the world. In 18 October 2008 to 22, 101 dead wild ducks were found in Anyangcheon. 24 of dead birds were spotbill (Anas poeilorhyncha), 56 were Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), 18 were green- winged teal (Anas carolinensis) and 3 were others. Clinical sign of the sick birds were flaccid paralysis of the neck. At autopsy, most birds had no specific lesions. Stomach is empty. In the mouse bioassay, Samples of serum and intestinal contents taken from 9 dead birds killed all the injected mice, and their toxicity was neutralized by the antitoxin against C. botulinum type C toxin.

  • This study modifies the present total maximum daily load (TMDL) system of Ministry of Environment and applies to the Anyangcheon watershed. Hydrologic Simulation Program-FORTRAN (HSPF) model is used to simulate both runoff and non-point source pollution, simultaneously, instead of QUAL2E. The drought flow (355th daily flow) is proposed for the target water quantity since it is easier to satisfy low flow (275th daily flow) for the target water quality than drought flow. The increase of discharge is more than the increase of pollutant load except for the period under low flow. The measured unit loads for non-point source are used to consider the regional runoff characteristics. The measured water quantity and quality data are used since the ministry of environment supports only water quality. This analysis results show some reasons for the improvement of the present TMDL system of Korea.

  • Comprehensive development projects were carried out on the Han River from 1982 to 1986 for the purpose of creating a more serviceable places such as a riverside parks and autoroads and so on. However because of the river development, river ecosystem and function were destroyed. And many local autonomous entity follows comprehensive development projects as if it is a model case. To investigate the impact that the river development effects the river ecosystem, two sites which are Anyangcheon and Sooipcheon were surveyed in the right of around plants ecosystem and structure. Two sites are creek of the Hna River. Sooipcheon maintains the sound ecosystem. It has sufficient carrying capacity for the river recreation activity. The reason is that a hydrophyte absorbs nutrients from the stream and the river ecosystem meets the around terrestrial one neturally. Number of hydrophyte increase from upstream going forward to downstream. Number of hydrophyte increase from upstream going forward to downstream. Anyangchoen is seriously polluted stream out of many branch stream of the Han river. In the upstream various woody plants and hydrophyte appeared. But from the river developed area at midstream, naturalized plants dominated such as Bidens tripartita, panicum dichotomiflorum etc. To manage the creek ecologically, hydrophyts were introduced in partly for natural purification after rehavilitate the riverside, and steadily monitoring is demanded.
