Relationship between Somatization and Mental Health of Registered Nurses (간호사의 신체화 증상과 정신건강의 관계)

  • Objectives : To identify the relationship between somatization, stress, depression, anxiety, and psychological symptoms risk for nurses working in the intensive care unit. Create clinical evidence of psychosomatic medicine research and complement the meaning of somatization. Methods : Seventy of the mental health checkups conducted by the National Mental Health Center among the nurses using tools including Perceived Stress scale, Fatigue Severity Scale, Patient Health questionnaire-15, Korean Beck Depression Inventory, Korean Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Symptom Checklist-90-Revision. Results : 12.9% of the patients experienced more than moderate somatization. There was no statistical relationship between somatization and psychological stress perception, but feeling of anxiety and decreased self-confidence were related to the level of somatization. The group with severe somatization experienced more depression and anxiety. The group with high physical fatigue also had no statistical relationship with psychological stress perception, but had an effect on the feeling of tension, stress, or decreased control. Physical fatigue level was increased by experience of depression, not by anxiety. For psychological symptoms the higher the level of somatization, the higher the obsession and hostility was explored. In the linear regression model, stress, depression, and anxiety accounted for 39.3% of somatization and 16.1% of physical fatigue symptoms. Conclusions : We can estimate the decrease in stress cognitive symptoms, accompanying depression and anxiety, compulsion and hostility as characteristics of somatization. The causal relationship between somatization and psychological symptoms cannot be confirmed in this study, but the interrelationships are observed, can be referred to mediation strategies.

Influence of Fatigue, Depression and Anxiety on Quality of Life in Pregnant Women with Preterm Labor (조기진통 임부의 피로, 우울과 불안이 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of fatigue, depression and anxiety on quality of life in pregnant women with preterm labor. Methods: With a survey design, data were collected from 138 mothers who were admitted at a hospital in Seoul, between June 2014 and September 2015. Instruments used to collect the data for the study were: Fatigue Continuum Form, Depression anxiety stress scale (DASS-21) and maternal postpartum quality of life (MAPP-QOL). Results: The mean fatigue score was 68.30 with 50.7% of women being depressed and 79.7% of the 138 women being anxious. The mean quality of life was 18.92 with quality of life being associated with fatigue, depression and anxiety. Depression and fatigue explained 26% of the variance in quality of life. Conclusion: Depression and fatigue adversely affected women's quality of life. It is important to address appropriate management of depression and fatigue in order to improve quality of life in pregnant women with preterm labor.

Effect of depression, anxiety, and stress on health promotion behavior in university students during COVID-19 (COVID-19를 경험한 대학생의 우울, 불안, 스트레스가 건강증진 행위에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The study attempted to improve the health promotion behavior of university students by identifying the factors that affect health promotion behavior and by checking depression, anxiety, and stress levels of university students after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We collected data using a structured questionnaire targeting 170 university students in C-province between December 1 and December 31, 2022. Results: Health promotion behavior had a significantly negative correlation with Depression (r=-.361, p<.001), Anxiety (r=-.191, p=.012), and Stress (r=-.301, p<.001), respectively. The influencing factors of health promotion behavior are gender (r=0.184, p<.001) and depression (r=-0.303, p<.001); the explanatory power is accounted for 15%. Conclusion: A practical method with counseling programs and mental health support services for early detection of risk groups by periodically monitoring the depression state of university students requires practicing health promotion behavior. Therefore, active support and attention should be provided to manage the mental health of university students.

The Effects of Depression, Anxiety and Stress on Sleep Quality in College Students (보건계열 대학생의 우울, 불안, 스트레스가 수면의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of depression, anxiety, and stress among health college students and to identify factors affecting sleep quality to provide a basis for improving sleep quality among health college students. Methods: Data was collected using a structured questionnaire from 181 college students at a university in City D from October 1 to October 31, 2023. Results: Sleep quality was significantly and positively correlated with depression (r=.703, p<.001), anxiety (r=.680, p<.001), and stress (r=.708, p<.001), and its predictors were caffeine consumption (β=-.174, p=.044), Satisfaction with college life (β=-.137, p=.009), depression (β=.251, p=.013). Stress (β=.277, p=.007), with an explanatory power of 56%. Conclusion: To improve the sleep quality of college students, we should encourage them to reduce their caffeine intake, run various programs to improve their satisfaction with college life, and expand mental health counseling programs on campus to monitor their mental health status regularly so that they can actively manage depression and stress.

Factor Analysis of the Korean Version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory n Patients with Anxiety Disorders (불안장애 환자를 대상으로 한 한국판 상태불안척도의 요인분석)

  • Objective : Brief screening for anxiety symptoms in clinical practice can further facilitate the diagnosis and evaluation of anxiety disorders. This study examined the factorial validity of the Korean version of the State-Trait Inventory (STAI)-Form X, one of the most frequently used self-report questionnaires for anxiety. Methods : Data from the STAI and Beck Depression Inventory were obtained from a consecutive sample of 200 outpatients diagnosed with DSM-IV anxiety disorders at a psychiatric unit of a university hospital. The factor structures of the State and Trait Scales were assessed using exploratory factor analysis. Results : Three-factor components, including 'State anxiety present', 'State anxiety absent' and 'Selfconfidence', were extracted from the State Scale, explaining 59% of the total variance. A four-factor solution involving 'Trait anxiety and depression present', 'Trait anxiety and depression absent', 'Anxiety proneness' and 'Stability' (59% of total variance) was extracted from the Trait Scale. The internal consistency of the STAI and factors were satisfactory. There were significant correlations between depressive symptoms and factors of the STAI. Conclusion : The STAI-form X showed factorial validity for Korean patients with anxiety disorders. However, our finding that this anxiety scale also measures depressive symptoms should be interpreted with caution.

A Study on Relationships among University Students' Self-differentiation, Self-esteem and Mental Health : Focused on Depression and Anxiety (대학생의 자아분화, 자아존중감과 정신건강간의 관계 - 우울, 불안을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine relationships among university students' self-differentiation, self-esteem and mental health. The subjects were 400 students of four universities in Busan and Gyungnam area. A questionnaire survey was done. The results of this study are as follows : First, the levels of university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were high. Second, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were correlated positively. Third, the levels of university students' depression and anxiety were relatively low. It showed that the subjects' mental health of this study were not bad. Fourth, depression had no significant difference by gender. However, female students had higher anxiety than male students had. Fifth, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem had negative correlation with depression and anxiety, and self-esteem played a role of mediating variable between self-differentiation and mental health. Sixth, family projection, family regression and self integration of self-differentiation had indirect influence upon the students' mental health through self-esteem, while cognitive-emotional function had direct influence upon mental health and had indirect influence upon mental health through self-esteem as well. In this study, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were found to be important variables having influence upon mental health, and self-differentiation had indirect influence upon mental health through self-esteem. Counselling intervention strategies should be established considering self-differentiation and self-esteem of the students who complained about their maladjusted emotion and human relation problems at schools. Also, programs enhancing self-differentiation and self-esteem of university students should be developed and the execution of these programs will be needed to help the university students who experienced mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and so on.

A Study of Internet Addiction, Depression and Anxiety among Smoking Adolescents (흡연청소년의 인터넷 중독, 우울 및 불안에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate the relations between internet addiction, depression, and anxiety in smoking adolescents. In order to get the data by self-questionnaire, 202 subjects were selected from Aug. 15 to Sep. 20, 2012. The data was analyzed by mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Internet addiction score was $30.9{\pm}6.55$, depression score was $9.0{\pm}4.76$, and anxiety score was $12.3{\pm}5.31$. There were significant positive correlations between internet addiction and depression, between internet addiction and anxiety, between depression and anxiety. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the predictors of internet addiction were average number of days drinking alcohol per month, average daily cigarette consumption and starting daily smoking age. The findings of study will be used for basic information to prevent and control internet addiction of smoking adolescents.

Effects of Cognitive Function and Depression on Anxiety in Elderly People-Convergent approach (노인의 인지기능과 우울이 불안에 미치는 영향-융복합적 접근)

  • This study was done to examine the relation of cognitive function, depression and anxiety in elderly people above 65 years of age, and to identify factors influencing anxiety. The data were collected from June 1 to August 30 2014. Data were collected by questionnaire from 363 elderly people. The instruments for this study were MMSE-DS, depression, anxiety. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. According to results, the significant factors influencing anxiety were sleeping time(${\beta}=-.249$, p<.001), depression(${\beta}=.218$, p<.001), cognitive function(${\beta}=-.209$, p<.001), occupation(${\beta}=-.133$, p=.006). The study reveals that it is necessary to develop a convergent program that maintain adequate sleep, prevents of cognitive impairment and decreases depression.

The Effects of Laughter Therapy on the Anxiety and Depression of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients (웃음치료가 염증성 장질환 환자의 불안 및 우울에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to apply laughter therapy to clinical practice and investigate its effects on patients' anxiety and depression in order to increase the quality of nursing for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods: The study was conducted based on the non-equivalent control group pretestposttest design. The participants include 20 patients with IBD in the control group and 17 in the experiment group. Data was collected from July 10th, 2011 to January 22nd, 2012. Laughter therapy was administered once a day for five consecutive days. Results: The anxiety score was significantly different between the two groups and indicates that laughter therapy is effective for reducing anxiety among patients with IBD. Futhermore, there were differences in the depression scores of the experiment group between the pre-test and post-test, but no significant differences were found between the two groups. Conclusion: The results show that laughter therapy was effective in reducing anxiety among patients with IBD but did not decrease depression directly. Considering that the experiment group had a bigger reduction rate in depression scores than the control group. However, it is expected that laughter therapy will serve as an emotional nursing intervention for patients with IBD.

The Effects of Danjeon Breathing Exercise on Vital Capacity, Physical Fitness, Anxiety and Depression among Older Adults (단전호흡운동 프로그램이 노인의 폐활량, 체력, 불안 및 우울에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Danjeon Breathing Exercise (DBE) on vital capacity, physical fitness, anxiety and depression among older adults. Methods: This study employed the nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The experimental group participated in a 12-week DBE program. Vital capacity and physical fitness were measured with a health measurement system (HELMAS). Anxiety and depression were measured with SCL-90-R-K. Data were collected from 37 community-dwelling older adults (experimental group=21, control group=16) in the Seoul metropolitan area. The data were analyzed by $x^2$-test, Mann-Whitney test and ANCOVA. Results: The experimental group taking DBE reported significant increases in flexibility than the control group, but differences in vital capacity and balance were not significant. Older adults taking DBE showed significant decreases in the anxiety and depression levels. Conclusion: A DBE program may be a useful nursing intervention for older adults to improve their flexibility and to reduce anxiety and depression.
