Wound swabs and pus samples were collected from diabetic foot ulcers, and control pus samples from non-diabetic cases. In 144 diabetic cases screened, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from 78 cases, in which 10.59% of the isolates were multidrug resistant (MDR), whereas the 60 control cases were not MDR. The isolated bacteria were decreasingly resistant to 6 clinically administrated antimicrobics such as ceftazidime, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, tobramycin, piperacillin and amikacin. Therefore, it is demanded that new and more effective antimicrobials of phytochemical origins are sought after. Among 11 isoflavones (YS11-YS21) isolated from Sophora and Euchresta (Leguminosae; pea plant family), 2 (YS19 and YS21) prominently exhibited the high antibacterial activity both in vitro and in vivo. By the preliminary results, the object of this paper is to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial effect of YS19 and YS21 on the clinically isolated bactera of Ps. Aeruginosa in hospitals. All the isolates were sensitive to YS19 and YS21 and for both, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranged from $2\;to\;50\;{\mu}g/mL$. The $MIC_{90}$ values of YS19 and YS21 were $50\;{\mu}g/mL$. It is suggested that these isoflavones might consist a basis phytochemical prevention and therapy for diabetic foot infections caused by pseudomonads.

Two Hahns Macaws (Ara nobilis nobilis), three and nine-month-old, with a three-weeks history of weight loss and anorexia were diagnosed presumptively with proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) by radiographic examination. The birds were treated with antimicrobials, analgesics, and fluid administration. However, these birds died three weeks after the first signs of PDD. At necropsy, the birds had severely dilated proventriculus, severe pectoral muscles atrophy, and blood vessels congestion on cortex of cerebrum. The partial matrix gene of avian bornavirus (ABV) was detected by RT-PCR from tissues of the brain, feather calami, and proventiculus of each PDD-suspected birds. This report describes the first detection of ABV in PDD-suspected Hahns Macaw in Korea.

Community-acquired antimicrobial resistant bacteria are an emerging problem whole world-wide. Generally, Hands are main mediator of pathogen transmission as compared with other body parts. So, the purpose of this research was to investigate the microbiological quality and antimicrobial susceptibilities of samples which were collected from the door knob and surface in public- and home-facilities, and also hand. Of total 191 samples, 71 samples (37%) were shown to be of high-level total bacterial count (>$10^8\;CFU/cm^2$). And presence of Staphylococcus and Enteric bacilli was observed in 61 samples (32%) and 76 samples (40%), respectively. Antimicrobial susceptibilities of staphylococcal isolates from the samples were tested for six different antimicrobial agents, which are in wide spread clinical use in Korea, as well as four new antimicrobials, daptomycin, linezolid, quinupristin/dalfopristin and tigecycline. Among staphylococcal isolates, antimicrobial resistance were observed in oxacillin (n=6), mupirocin (n=7), vancomycin (n=1), quinupristin/dalfopristin (n=2) and gentamicin (n=5). Fortunately, all the isolates were susceptible to new antimicrobial such as daptomycin, linezolid and tigecycline. Furthermore 4 Enterococcus faecalis were isolated from four hand samples, and all these isolates exhibited multidrug resistance to four different antimicrobial (oxacillin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, mupirocin, gentamicin). Also, 5 Escherichia coli were isolated from surface in home (n=3), door knob in public facilities (n=1) and hand (n=1). Escherichia coli isolated from hand was high-level resistant to tigecycline ($128{\mu}g$/ml) and gentamicin ($64{\mu}g$/ml).

Plants of the genus Hypericum (Family - Hypericaceae) are herbs, shrubs or small trees and are distributed chiefly in the temperate regions of the world. About 400 different species of Hypericum are available throughout the globe and 20 species occur in India, including a few cultivated in gardens. Almost all plants of the genus Hypericum are widely used in folk medicine. Several potent phytoconstituents from different Hypericum species have led to the isolation of antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic compounds. With the development of resistance and cross resistance with different microorganisms and the evolution of so many deadly diseases the screening and evaluation of the phytoconstituents so much so the development of varied phytoconstituents for the drug development for these deadly diseases is utmost essential in every aspects. The present review on the antimicrobial use of different Hypericum reports the findings from and extensive literature search on the Hypericum species around the globe that have been assessed for antimicrobial and antiviral activity. An attempt has been made through this review to summarize the information in this aspect in order to highlight the promising species of this genus which are worthy for further investigation as leads for drug development. Over 31 different Hypericum species have been reported to possess such activities with their varied number of phytoconstituents. Sixteen different constituents of six different classes of phytoconstituents have been reported to be present in different varieties of Hypericum, which may be considered responsible for this activity.

The fabrication of PHBV nanofibers containing various plant polyphenols by electrospinning has been examined. It has been found that the average diameters of fibers increased by the adding of polyphenols. The resulting fibers exhibited a uniform diameter ranging from 340 to 450 nm. As the concentration of polyphenols increased, the diameter of fibers increased due to the hydrogen bonding interaction between the ester groups of PHBV and hydroxyl groups of polyphenols. The interaction between PHBV and polyphenols, which forms a complex together in solution, was verifed by UV measurement. ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed the existence of the hydrogen bonding interaction. The semicrystalline structure of the PHBV nanofiber was observed from XRD pattern. The crystallinity of PHBV nanofibers was increased by the adding of polyphenols. PHBV nanofibers containing polyphenols showed superior antimicrobial activities.
The study was investigated to the effect of antimicrobial finishing of towel treated by organic antimicrobial agent. It was measured for the optimal condition such as treated time, treated concentration and temperature. After amtimicrobial treatment, mechanical and fastness properties, anti-laundering property were measured. The antimicrobial activity of samples was analyzed quantitatively by masureing the number of colonies of Staphylococcus aureus using the shake flask method. Towel samples treated with the optimal condition such as treated time of 10 minute, and treated temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, concentration of organic antimicrobial agent of 3.5% were shown a high reduction rate in the number of colonies grown and clear zones of inhibition. The effect of reduction rate for laundering until the number of 20 times was shown high reduction rate of over 80%. And the mechanical properties of samples treated with organic antimicrobial agent were not changed approximately.

Antimicrobial resistance patterns of Escherichia coli were investigated. Strains were isolated from 310 shellfish, 36 crustaceans, and 12 fish collected off the West Coast of Korea from April 2019 to October 2020. Two hundred and ninety-five E. coli strains were isolated from shellfish, 100 from crustaceans, and 54 from fish. Strains isolated from shellfish showed the highest resistance to ampicillin (27.5%), whereas those from crustaceans were resistant to sulfisoxazole (30.0%) and those from fish were resistant to ampicillin (59.3%) and sulfisoxazole (59.3%). Ceftazidime resistance was observed in strains isolated from short neck and hard clams, whereas gentamicin resistance was observed in strains from fish. Multi-drug resistance was observed in 56 strains (48.7%) isolated from shellfish, 11 (28.2%) from crustaceans and 27 (73.0%) from fish. Depending on the source of isolation, the strains showed specific antimicrobial resistance tendency. Strains isolated from shellfish showed 12 different multi-drug resistance patterns, whereas those from crustaceans showed high resistance (59%) to a single antimicrobial agent and those from fish showed a broad trend of multi-drug resistance to more than eight antimicrobials.

The porcine myeloid antimicrobial peptide (PMAP), one of the cathelicidin family members, contains small cationic peptides with amphipathic properties. We used a putative lysozyme originated from the bacteriophage P22 (P22 lysozyme) as a fusion partner, which was connected to the N-terminus of the PMAP36 peptide, to markedly increase the expression levels of recombinant PMAP36. The PMAP36-P22 lysozyme fusion protein with high solubility was produced in Escherichia coli. The final purified yield was approximately 1.8 mg/L. The purified PMAP36-P22 lysozyme fusion protein exhibited antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and Grampositive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis). Furthermore, we estimated its hemolytic activity against pig erythrocytes as 6% at the high concentration ($128{\mu}M$) of the PMAP36-P22 lysozyme fusion protein. Compared with the PMAP36 peptide (12%), our fusion protein exhibited half of the hemolytic activity. Overall, our recombinant PMAP36-P22 lysozyme fusion protein sustained the antimicrobial activity with the lower hemolytic activity associated with the synthetic PMAP36 peptide. This study suggests that the PMAP36-P22 lysozyme fusion system could be a crucial addition to the plethora of novel antimicrobials.
This study developed an antimicrobial hydrogel to control Listeria monocytogenes in Yukhoe (Korean beef tartare). Four hydrogels (hydrogel 1: 5% alginate+1% chitosan+0.2% $CaCl_2$, hydrogel 2: 1% ${\kappa}$-carrageenan+1% chitosan, hydrogel 3: 2% ${\kappa}$-carrageenan+1% $CaCl_2$, and hydrogel 4: 2% ${\kappa}$-carrageenan+3% $CaCl_2$) were prepared. The hydrogels then absorbed 0.1% grapefruit seed extract (GSE) and 0.1% citrus extract (CE) for 30, 60, 120, and 240 min to be antimicrobial hydrogels. To select the most effective antimicrobial hydrogel, their swelling ratio (SR) and antilisterial activities were determined. The selected hydrogel ($2{\times}2cm$) was then placed on surface of beef (round; $3{\times}3cm$), where L. monocytogenes (ca. $10^6CFU/g$) were inoculated, and the cell counts were enumerated on PALCAM agar. Among the hydrogels, the SR of hydrogel 1 increased with absorbing time, but other hydrogels showed no significant changes. Antimicrobial hydrogel 1 showed higher (p<0.05) antilisterial activity than other antimicrobial hydrogels, especially for the one absorbed the antimicrobial for 120 min. Thus, the antimicrobial hydrogel 1 absorbed antimicrobials for 120 min was applied on raw beef at $4^{\circ}C$, and reduced (p<0.05) more than 90% of L. monocytogenes on raw beef. These results indicate that antimicrobial hydrogel 1 formulated with 0.1% GSE or 0.1% CE is appropriate to improve the safety of Yukhoe by reducing psychrotrophic L. monocytogenes cell counts on raw beef.

Parasitic infections have remained a significant burden on human and animal health. In part, this is due to lack of clinically-approved, novel antimicrobials and a lack of interest by the pharmaceutical industry. An alternative approach is to modify existing clinically-approved drugs for efficient delivery formulations to ensure minimum inhibitory concentration is achieved at the target site. Nanotechnology offers the potential to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of drugs through modification of nanoparticles with ligands. Amphotericin B, nystatin, and fluconazole are clinically available drugs in the treatment of amoebal and fungal infections. These drugs were conjugated with gold nanoparticles. To characterize these gold-conjugated drug, atomic force microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were performed. These drugs and their gold nanoconjugates were examined for antimicrobial activity against the protist pathogen, Acanthamoeba castellanii of the T4 genotype. Moreover, host cell cytotoxicity assays were accomplished. Cytotoxicity of these drugs and drug-conjugated gold nanoparticles was also determined by lactate dehydrogenase assay. Gold nanoparticles conjugation resulted in enhanced bioactivity of all three drugs with amphotericin B producing the most significant effects against Acanthamoeba castellanii (p < 0.05). In contrast, bare gold nanoparticles did not exhibit antimicrobial potency. Furthermore, amoebae treated with drugs-conjugated gold nanoparticles showed reduced cytotoxicity against HeLa cells. In this report, we demonstrated the use of nanotechnology to modify existing clinically-approved drugs and enhance their efficacy against pathogenic amoebae. Given the lack of development of novel drugs, this is a viable approach in the treatment of neglected diseases.
