This study was carried out to identify and investigate antimicrobial susceptibility for Mannheimuia haemolytical which is responsible for shipping fever. Samples were collected from nasal and lung of 100 adult healthy cattle which are slaughtered in Samsung meat corporation located in Incheon metropolitan city. lung lesion index have been investigated within 0-5 range according to Shewen and Willkie(Can J Vet Res 52:30-36, 1988). Eighty-seven of 100 cattle were under normal condition with 0-1 ranges. A total of 129 strains were collected from blood and tryptic soy agar. Among these strains, 100 strains were identified with Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and enterobacteria containing E coli. Biochemical and fermentation assay of arabinose, trehalose, xylose, mannose, mannitol, lactose and salicin were tested to identify with Mannheimia sp. for 7 strains shown haemolytic activity on blood agar. Five strains were identified with Mannheimia haemolytica and 2 strains were untyped. In seasonal survey, Mannheimia sp recovered from fall to winter(5 of 7) have been highly isolated rather than those from spring to summer(2 of 7). Mannheimiz haemolytica were susceptible to antibacterials tested in this study but more resistant to oxytetracycline and streptomycin.

The acute toxicities of two major anti-pathogenic veterinary medicines, i.e., ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin, and six benzimidazole anthelmintics, i.e., albendazole, thiabendazole, flubendazole, febantel, fenbendazole, and oxfendazole, were evaluated with a marine bacterium, Vibrio fischeri, and invertebrate Daphnia magna. These veterinary medical products have been widely used for farm animals, but their impact on aquatic fauna has seldom been investigated. In general, daphnids responded as much as 3 orders of magnitude more sensitively to the tested pharmaceuticals than the microbes. For Daphnia, the most toxic product among the tested anthelmintics was fenbendazole, followed by flubendazole > albendazole ${\approx}$ febantel > thiabendazole > oxfendazole. Daphnids' EC50 values obtained from 48 to 96 hrs of fenbendazole exposure ranged from 2.7 to 6.3 ug/L. The mixture toxicity of the test pharmaceuticals was generally additive in nature and was well predicted by a concentration addition model. Using the predicted no effect concentrations (PNECs) of the benzimidazole derivatives estimated from this study, and predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) of these pharmaceuticals, the risk quotients of each anthelmintics were calculated. Most of the test anthelmintic compounds resulted in risk quotients greater than 1. Especially, risk quotient for fenbendazole was 2,791, which strongly indicates this compound might cause severe ecological consequences, should no future action be taken. This study is the first report on the aquatic toxicities and potential ecological risk of major anthelmintic and antimicrobial veterinary products in Korea. The result of this study provides information necessary for conducting more detailed ecological risk assessment of pharmaceutical products in ambient water and guiding proper management decision.
Dentinal hypersensitivity is a type of dental pain that occurs when various stimuli are applied to exposed dentin lesions. If the symptoms of dentinal hypersensitivity continue, the dentin is exposed and the hypersensitivity may become a periodontal disease or root caries due to bacterial infection. Therefore, the clinical goal of the present study is to reduce the pain of the patient suffering from dentinal hypersensitivity by developing antimicrobial hypersensitivity treatments and to improve oral hygiene. We prepared chlorhexidine, tetracycline, cetylpyridinium chloride, gallic acid loaded desensitizer by adding 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% chlorhexidine, tetracycline, cetylpyridinium chloride, gallic acid to desensitizer (Micro Prime; Denville and Hurri Seal; Beutlich), and antibacterial effect, and cytotoxicity. The antibacterial test by using Staphylococcus aureus (SA. ATCC 6538, FDA 209) showed that the antibacterial effect of all experimental groups was significantly higher than that of control group (p<0.05). Cytotoxicity test by using agar diffusion assay indicated that Micro Prime showed mild toxicity, Hurri Seal showed severe toxicity and this cytotoxicity is supposed to be caused by one of desensitizer components showing weak antibacterial effect.
Objectives: Glass ionomer cements (GICs), which are biocompatible and adhesive to the tooth surface, are widely used nowadays for tooth restoration. They inhibit the demineralization and promote the remineralization of the tooth structure adjacent to the restoration, as well as interfere with bacterial growth. Hence, the present study was conducted to assess and compare the antimicrobial activity of three commercially available GICs against two cariogenic bacteria. Materials and Methods: An agar plate diffusion test was used for evaluating the antimicrobial effect of three different GICs (Fuji IX, Ketac Molar, and d-tech) on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus). Thirty plates were prepared and divided into two groups. The first group was inoculated with S. mutans, and the second group was inoculated with L. acidophilus. These plates were then incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Zones of bacterial growth inhibition that formed around each well were recorded in millimeters (mm). Results: The zones of inhibition for Fuji IX, Ketac Molar, and d-tech on S. mutans were found to be $10.84{\pm}0.22mm$, $10.23{\pm}0.15mm$, and $15.65{\pm}0.31mm$, respectively, whereas those for L. acidophilus were found to be $10.43{\pm}0.12mm$, $10.16{\pm}0.11mm$, and $15.57{\pm}0.13mm$, respectively. Conclusions: D-tech cement performed better in terms of the zone of bacterial inhibition against the two test bacteria, than the other two tested glass ionomers.

Propionibacterium acnes, a major pathogens bacterium of acne, is one of the microflora associated with the inflammation. In this study, the antibacterial effects of 70% ethanol extracts from the 61 natural plants in Jeju against P. acnes were investigated using the disc diffusion method. The 45 natural plant extracts showed antibacterial effects and the 16 natural plants extracts didn't show antibacterial effects. The Phyllanthus urinaria L. (stem and leaves) extract showed thr highest antimicrobial activity with $18.96{\pm}0.69mm$ clear zone of the growth of P. acnes, followed by Angelica gigas Nakai (roots), Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino, Angelica gigas Nakai (stem and leaves), Isodon inflexus (Thunb.) Kudo, camellia sinensis L. (flowers), Rosmarinus officinalis, etc. These results suggest that the natural plant in Jeju can be used as functional cosmetic biomaterials or antimicrobial agents against P. acnes.

Some new derivatives of 1,2,4-triazolo[2,3-a]benzimidazoles were synthesized through the reaction of 1,2-diaminobenzimidazole with carbon disulfide. The resulting 1,2,4-triazolo-[2,3a]benzimidazole-2-thione intermediate was reacted with one equivalent of alkyl halides to give the corresponding 2-alkylthio derivatives, which were further alkylated through the reaction with another one equivalent of different alkyl halides to afford the target compounds; 1-alkyl-2alkylthio-1,2,4-traizolo[2,3-a]benzimidazoles. On the other hand, the 1,2-disubstituted derivatives with two identical alkyl substituents were prepared by the reaction of 1,2,4-triazolo[2,3-a]benzimidazole-2-thione with two equivalents of the alkyl halides. The structures of the new compounds were assigned by spectral and elemental methods of analyses. The synthesized compounds were tested for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Most of the tested compounds proved comparable results with those of ampicillin and fluconazole reference drugs. The study indicated that, the antibacterial as well as the antifungal activities of the test compounds were improved with increase in the bulkiness of the introduced alkyl groups. Also, some active antibacterial compounds were tested for their antimycobacterial activity. All the test compounds showed equipotent antitubercular activity as that of INH as a reference drug.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of major pathogen causing hospital infection and several diseases such as purulent infection, bacteremia. The isolation ratio of MRSA is gradually increased up to 80% in the hospital, which makes a limitation for treatment of antibiotics because the isolated MRSA show resistance to methicillin as well as other antibiotics. This study proposes that mecA detecting methods which are not commonly used because of cost in the hospital is a more accurate method than Susceptibility Testing to detect a MRSA. We compared Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 as a negative control and 20 MRSA strains isolated from patients by these two methods. We amplified mecA gene by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and confirmed the PCR products by sequencing. All of the MRSA showed oxacillin and cefoxitin resistance whereas 85% (16/19) of the strains had mecA wildtype. These results suggest that some of the MRSA are mecA mutants therefore mecA genotyping reinforces the MRSA detection by antibiotic susceptibility test.
Concrete structure can be deteriorated by ingress of moisture and aggressive agents. To maintain the sound performance of concrete structure during the service life, it needs to protect concrete from ingress of moisture and aggressive agents before arising deterioration of concrete. Protection of concrete is possible by surface treatment. In this study, durability of the functional nano composite inorganic activated carbon based coatings which can provide a barrier against the ingress of moisture or aggressive ions to concrete is discussed. For the durability evaluation of the coatings, fine void structure evaluation test, chloride penetration acceleration test, accelerated carbonation test, freezing and thawing test, and the accelerated test of chemical erosion are conducted. As the result of this study, the functional nano composite inorganic activated carbon based coatings which became one formed complex compound with adsorption and porosity on concrete surface, had an effect on the function of far infrared radiation, antimicrobial action, air cleaning, airing assurance, and the interception of moisture of deterioration factor, chloride ion, carbon dioxide, sulfate, and so on.
The bacterial strain that was isolated from chinese cabbage rhizosphere, showed inhibition of yeast growth. This strain was identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens BB2 by API 20NE test and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. P. fluorescens BB2 strain produced antibiotics against yeast as a secondary metabolite effectively when the culture was carried out in YM medium with 3% glucose at $20^{\circ}C$. The protein antibiotic of BB2 strain which was concentrated by ammonium sulfate precipitation and n-butanol extraction inhibited the growth of yeast with the minimal inhibitory concentration of $10{\mu}g/ml$ against Candida albicans KCTC 7965, and the growth of yeast was completely inhibited at $80{\mu}g/ml$. The hydrophilic fraction of n-butanol extraction inhibited the growth of Bacillus cereus ATCC 21366, showed orange halo on chrome azurol S plate, which means the fraction contained iron chelating siderophore. The results of crystal violet uptake through the cell membrane showed that membrane permeability was increased about 9% than control, when the concentration of hydrophobic antibiotic against yeast C. albicans was $60{\mu}g/ml$. As a result, the antibiotic produced by P. fluorescens BB2 against yeast Candida is considered antimicrobial peptide, and this is the first report in the genus Pseudomonas.
Background : Community-acquired pneumonia(CAP) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Recently, the evolution of drug-resistant microorganisms has become a serious problem in CAP management. Specific antimicrobial therapy is the cornerstone of CAP management. However, obtaining an accurate etiologic diagnosis clinically is not easy and empirical antimicrobial treatment is usually administered prior to the correct microbiologic diagnosis. In this study, the clinical usefulness of empirical CAP treatment was investigated. Methods : A total 35 cases were studied prospectively over a 16-month period in Mokpo Catholic Hospital from Dec. 1995 to Mar. 1997. The microbiologic diagnosis was made by sputum, blood culture, a specific serum antibody test and an immunologic study. Results : The causative organisms were isolated in 10 (30%) out of 33 cases: 8 cases and 1 case on the sputum culture and blood culture respectively, and 1 case by an indirect hemagglutinin test. 12 cases had underlying diseases: pulmonary tuberculosis 4, alcoholism 4, diabetes mellitus 3, and liver cirrhosis 1. Antimicrobial treatment was given empirically and all cases recovered. Conclusion : A definite microbiologic diagnosis before commencing the appropriate treatment in CAP is not straightforward. Empirical therapy according to a clinical assessment is important and helpful. However, every effort to make the correct etiologic diagnosis should be taken.
