The study was to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of Biophytum sensitivum (L.) DC in different extracts. Albino Wistar rats with alloxan hydrate induced diabetes were divided into 7 groups of 6 each. Both aqueous and methanolic extract of Biophytum sensitivum were prepared and given individually at different doses to different batches of rats (both normal and diabetic rats) after an overnight fast. Methanolic extract at the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight showed maximum blood glucose lowering effect in diabetic rats. The same dosages did not produce any hypoglycemic activity in normal rats. The antihyperglycemic activity of Biophytum sensitivum was compared with a standard drug Glibenclamide, an oral hypoglycemic agent. The above results suggest that maximum hypoglycemic effect was found only with a dose of up to 200 mg/kg b.w. of methanolic extract which is therefore the optimum dose for hypoglycemia and was used in all the experiments of the present study.
The present study was carried out to investigate the antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant effect of chloroform and methanol extract of whole plant of Ichnocarpus frutescens (CEIF and MEIF) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Administration of CEIF and MEIF orally at the dose of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight resulted in significant (P<0.01) reduction in blood glucose levels. The body weights were significantly (P<0.001) reduced in STZ-induced diabetic rats when compared to normal rats while the extracts significantly (P<0.01) prevented the decrease in body weight in the CEIF and MEIF treated rats. The study was further undertaken to evaluate the antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic potential of CEIF and MEIF in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The increased levels of lipid peroxidation in the liver tissues of diabetic rats were significantly reverted back to normal levels and a significant increase in activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and the level of reduced glutathione in the liver of diabetic rats after the treatment with CEIF and MEIF was noticed. These results clearly indicate that CEIF and MEIF exhibit significant antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and in vivo antioxidant activity in STZ-induced diabetic rats and the results were found to be in a dose dependent manner.
Following preparation of water extracts of Pleurotus cornucopiae fruiting body-containing ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitor, their antihyperglycemic effects were examined using streptozotocin-induced diabetic Sprague-Dawley (SD)-rats. The water extracts from Pleurotus cornucopiae showed dosage-dependant antihyperglycemic effects on the streptozotocin-induced diabetic SD-rats after oral administration to 120 min on the short time test and 4 days on the long time test, respectively. The water extracts from Pleurotus cornucopiae fruiting body showed dosage-dependent hypoglycemic action after administration to 120 min and 4 days in the SD-rat and streptozotocin-induced diabetic SD-rat.

In India, Tectona grandis is traditionally used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and lipid disorder. In the present study, the antihyperglycemic and lipid lowering effect of ethanolic extract of bark of Tectona grandis (TG) was evaluated using alloxan induced diabetes in rats. Alloxan was given at the dose of 140 mg/kg, i.p. After induction of diabetes, TG was administered for 42 days p. o. and simultaneously different biochemical parameters like plasma glucose, liver glycogen content, serum triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were estimated. Diabetic control showed significant increase (P < 0.01) in plasma glucose, serum triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and significant decrease (P < 0.01) in serum HDL-cholesterol and liver glycogen content. Treatment with TG showed significant reduction (P < 0.01) in plasma glucose when compared with diabetic control. The elevated levels of serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels were significantly reduced (P < 0.01) by TG. TG treatment for 42 days showed significant decrease in serum LDL-cholesterol (P < 0.01) and significant increase in serum HDL-cholesterol level (P < 0.01). Moreover, diabetic control there was significant decrease in liver glycogen content which was significantly increased (P < 0.05) by treatment with TG. Hence, from the result obtained in the present study it can be concluded that Tectona grandis has the potential to treat diabetes condition and associated lipid disorder.
For development a new anti-diabetic compound from edible mushroom, antihyperglycemic ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activities of Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus cornucopiae, Pleurotus salmoneostramineus, Pleurotus eryngii and Neolentinus lepideus were investigated on its water and ethanol extracts. ${\alpha}$-Glucosidase inhibitory activity of Neolentinus lepideus fruiting body showed the highest at 86.3% in the 95% ethanol extracts and water extract from Pleurotus cornucopiae was also higher at 48.5% among water extracts. Therefore, Neolentinus lepideus which showed very high ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity was selected as a new anti-diabetic agent-containing mushroom and the ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitor was maximally extracted when treated with 95% ethanol at $30^{\circ}C$ for 48 hr. The ethanol extracts from Neolentinus lepideus fruiting body showed dosage-dependent hypoglycemic action after administration to 120 min in the SD-rat and streptozotocin-induced diabetic SD-rat.
This study investigates the effects of Psidium guajava L. leaf (Pg), Lagerstroemia speciosa L. leaf (Ls) and mixture A (Pg, Ls, Morus indica L. leaf extract, Pinus densiflora needles extract, Acanthopanax senticosus M. root extract) on streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetes rats. For four weeks, STZ-diabetes rats were fed crystallized extracts of Pg, Ls, and mixture A. Compared to the diabetic control group, extracts of Pg, Ls, and mixture A decreased glucose levels in rats by 20%, 14% and 24% respectively. These extracts also decreased the level of total cholesterol, triglyceride and free fatty acid, compared to the diabetic control group, while effectively increasing levels of insulin and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. These results showed that mixture A had greater antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, and insulin-increasing effects than the Pg and Ls extracts. Mixture A also showed better restoration of damaged beta cell function compared to Pg and Ls extracts. Therefore, it was proved that mixture A provides a beneficial synergistic effect when compared with Pg and Ls extracts used individually.

To keep blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible is the major goal of diabetes mellitus treatment $\alpha$-Glucosidase is the enzyme that digests die1my carbohydrate and inhibition of this enzyme may suppress postprandial hyperglycemia. The methanol extract of Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg was tested for inhibitoty activity against $\alpha$-glucosidase in vitro and in vivo. Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg extract inhibited yeast $\alpha$-glucosidase activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg showed an $IC_{50}$ value of 0.48 mg/mL. The ability of Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg extract to lower postprandial glucose was studied in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. A starch solution (1 g/kg) with and without the methanol extract of Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg extract (500 mg/kg) was administered to diabetic rats by gastric intubation after an overnight fast A single oral dose of Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg extract significantly inhibited increases in blood glucose levels at 60 and 90 min (p<0.05) and significantly decreased incremental response areas under the glycemic response curve (p<0.05). These results suggest that Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg may have an antihyperglycemic effect by inhibiting $\alpha$-glucosidase activity in the animal model of diabetes mellitus.
Metfotrmin is a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent often used for the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetics(NIDDM). Metformin lowers both fasting and postprandial plasma glucose concentrations by improving insulin sensitivity at hepatic and peripheral tissues. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of metformin were studied in Korean healthy volunteers at fasting state over 10 hours. (omitted)
