Worldwide, diarrhea remains one of the most common illnesses among children. Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is the cornerstone of diarrhea treatment. Yet, the rates at which ORT is used are still disappointingly low. Additional treatment interventions include antimotility drugs, antisecretary drugs, adsorbents, probiotics, antibiotics, oral immunoglobulin, micronutrient supplementation. Drugs are generally not necessary. However, selected probiotics may reduce the duration and intensity of diarrhea. Zinc is beneficial especially to malnourished children with diarrhea. Antibiotic treatment is effective mainly in shigella and cholera infection. Other drugs may be effective but require further investigations.
The use of aortic valve homograft has been developed since 1962 when Ross and Barratt - Boyes independently replaced a diseased aortic valve with an orthotopically inserted homograft valve. And also surgical treatment of complex congenital cardiac malformations utilizing homograft extracardiac conduit has been tried with better result than any other prosthetic material. The present study was undertaken to clarify the safety tissue viability, sterility, after following our protocol of procurement of heart, dissection of aortic and pulmonic homograft, sterilization, cryopreservation, thawing and dilution, and transplantation on experimental animal, sheep. Tissue viability of valve and great artery was assessed by tissue culture. Sterility was evaluated by bacterial and fungal culture. The method used was proven no deleterious effect on the integrity of the valve. Tissue culture of valve tissue before, and after cryopreservation process resulted that active fibroblast growth was observed from homograft sterilized with antibiotics. And culture of the transplanted homograft from sacrificed animal showed active fibroblast growth. Pathologic examination of implanted valve tissue from sacrificed sheep showed mild calcification and minor change, but there were moderate and severe calcification of wall of great arteries.
Toxic epidermal necrolysis is an unpredictable and severe adverse drug reaction. In toxic epidermal necrolysis, epidermal damage appears to result from keratinocyte apoptosis. This condition is triggered by many factors, principally drugs such as antiepileptic medications, antibiotics (particularly sulfonamide), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, allopurinol, and nevirapine. Lamotrigine has been reported potentially cause serious cutaneous reactions, and concomitant use of valproic acid with lamotrigine significantly increases this risk. We describe a case of an 11-year-old girl with tic and major depressive disorders who developed toxic epidermal necrolysis after treatment with lamotrigine, and who was diagnosed both clinically and pathologically. Children are more susceptible to lamotrigine-induced rash than adults, and risk of serious rash can be lessened by strict adherence to dosing guidelines. Unfortunately, in our case, the patient was administered a higher dose than the required regimen. Therefore, clinicians should strictly adhere to the dose regimen when using lamotrigine, especially in children.
To establish a competent method of microbiological assay for bacampicillin, one of new semi-synthetic derivatives of ${\beta}-lactam$ antibiotics, a comparison was carried out between different conditions for hydrolysis of bacampicillin into ampicillin which was then subjected to cylinder plate method. The results showed that the use of carboxylic ester hydrolase in vitro as a pretreatment of it in either pH value 6 or 8 was feasible and that the cylinder plate method with Sarcina lutea was adequate for potency estimation.
A study on quinolone antibacterial, norfloxacin, was performed to apply for the control of bacterial diseases in eel (Anguilla japonica). Norfloxacin was proved excellent in antibacterial activity and sensitivity against fish bacterial pathogens when compared with the existing antibacterials and antibiotics. And any side effect was not observed during the period of indicated use. An outline of minimal inhibitory concentration was $0.03{\sim}0.1{\mu}g/ml$, $TLm_{48h}$ value was 3,500mg/l. The residual time of the day in fish body was less than 17 days and any pathological changes were not observed. The study has revealed that norfloxacin can be applied to treat some fish bacterial disease by the dosage of 100g/day/ton of fish body weight for about 3 days perorally. Further, norfloxacin may be used for the control of bacterial pathogens in eel.
Lactobacillus plantarum FH185 was isolated from the feces of healthy adults. In our previous study, L. plantarum FH185 was demonstrated that it has anti-obesity effect in the in vitro and in vivo test. In order to determine its potential for use as a probiotic, we investigated the physiological characteristics of L. plantarum FH185. The optimum growth temperature of L. plantarum FH185 was 40℃. L. plantarum FH185 showed higher sensitivity to novobiocin in a comparison of fifteen different antibiotics and showed higher resistance to polymyxin B and vancomycin. It also showed higher β-galactosidase and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase activities. Moreover, it was comparatively tolerant to bile juice and acid, and inhibited the growths of Salmonella Typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus with rates of 44.76% and 53.88%, respectively. It also showed high adhesion activity to HT-29 cells compared to L. rhamnosus GG.
The incidence of contamination of epidural catheters used for pain control was investigated. To prevent epidural infection, all patients with epidural catheters had taken amoxacillin 1.5gm/day orally. Of the cultures of catheters catched from 303 patients undergoing continuous epidrual catheterization, 5 catheters (1.7%) were found to be contaminated; cervical 1/86 (1.2%), thoracic 1/27 (3.7%), and lumbar 3/190 (1.6%). Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most common etiologic agent (60%). To prevent epidural infection, sterilization of the skin around the epidural catheter and prophylactic use of broad-spectrum antibiotics are thought to be beneficial.

Objectives: This study investigated the types and antibiotic sensitivity of bacteria in odontogenic abscesses. Materials and Methods: Pus specimens from 1,772 patients were collected from affected areas during incision and drainage, and bacterial cultures and antibiotic sensitivity tests were performed. The number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria was analyzed relative to the total number of bacteria that were tested for antibiotic susceptibility. Results: Bacterial cultures from 1,772 patients showed a total of 2,489 bacterial species, 2,101 gram-positive and 388 gram-negative. For penicillin G susceptibility tests, 2 out of 31 Staphylococcus aureus strains tested showed sensitivity and 29 showed resistance. For ampicillin susceptibility tests, all 11 S. aureus strains tested showed resistance. In ampicillin susceptibility tests, 46 out of 50 Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae strains tested showed resistance. Conclusion: When treating odontogenic maxillofacial abscesses, it is appropriate to use antibiotics other than penicillin G and ampicillin as the first-line treatment.
Initial successful treatment of postpneumonectomy empyema depends to a large extent on adequate dependent drainage of the empyema sac and the use of antibiotics. But definite control of the infected space remains a disturbing and controversial area in the field of thoracic surgery. A 55-year-old man had a right pneumonectomy for tuberculosis with the development of postoperative thoracic empyema and in October 1973. Postoperatively, an empyema developed and the condition was managed with closed drainage and an open window thoracostomy. He was transferred to our institution in October 1988, and underwent thoracoplasty for the obliteration of the empyema space, resulting in a remaining space. The remaining space after thoracoplasty was obliterated by myoplasty using a rotation flap of splitted pectoralis major muscle three months later. He was discharged with uneventful course 12 days after operation, and continues to do well 3 months following operation. Our experience shows that thoracoplasty and myoplasty offer an effective alternative method of management of post-pneumonectomy empyema.
Bovine mastitis was examined by use of the rolling ball viscosity test in Kwang-ju area. Antibiotic sus-ceptibility of isolated pathogens from raw milk was investigated by the disc method. Positive rate of so-matic cell counts (over 500,000 cells/ml) was decreased from 11.1% in 1991∼1993 to 8.0-% in 1995∼1997. Isolated mastitis-causing-pathogens were identified as Staphylococcus sp. (49.7%) Escherichia coki(23.2%) Streptococcus sp. (10.4%) and Bacillus sp(7.2%) Antibiotic susceptibility of isolated pathogens to almost antibiotics was decreased.
