With the increasing demand for plastic micro components, micro-/nano-molding using the mother stamper has received much attention. If the replication temperature is too high, the adhesion between the stamper and the polymer melt may deteriorate the surface quality of the replicated part, excessively wearing down the stamper. In this paper, an experimental method analyzes the temperature dependency of the anti-adhesion property between the actual stamper with patterns of sub-micrometer and the polymer melt. As a practical example, a correlation between the contact angle of the stamper and the surface quality of the molded substrates as a function of the replication temperature, respectively, was obtained quantitatively.

Tool-chip adhesion impacts on cutting performance significantly, especially in finish cutting process. To promote cutting tools' anti-adhesion property, the concave micro-grooves texture (MGT) and convex volcano-like texture (VLT) were fabricated separately on lathe tools' rake faces by laser surface texturing (LST). Various orientations of MGT and different area densities (9% and 48%) and regions (partial and full) of VLT were considered in textured patterns designing. The following orthogonal cutting experiments, machining of aluminum alloy 5038, analyzed tools' performances including cutting force, cutting stability, chip shape, rake face adhesion and abrasion. It indicated that under dry finish cutting conditions, MGT contributed to cutting stability and low cutting forces, meanwhile friction and normal force reduced by around 15% and 10%, respectively with a weak correlation to the grooves' orientation. High density VLT tools, on the other hand, presented an obvious anti-adhesion property. A $5{\mu}m$ reduction of crater wear's depth can be observed on textured rake faces after long length cutting and textured rake faces presented half size of BUE regions comparing to the flat tool, however, once the texture morphologies were filled or worn, the anti-adhesion effect could be invalid. The bearing ratio curve was employed to analysis tool-chip contact and durability of textured surfaces contributing to a better understanding of anti-adhesion and enhanced durability of the textured tools.
Studies on some biodegradable polymers and other materials such as hydrogels have shown the promising potential for a variety of surgical applications. Postoperative adhesion caused by the natural consequence of surgical wound healing results in problems of the repeated surgery. Recently, scientists have developed absorbable anti-adhesion barriers that can protect a tissue from adhesion in case they are in use; however, they are dissolved when no longer needed. Although these approaches have been attempted to fulfill the criteria for adhesion prevention, none can perfectly prevent adhesions in all situations. Overall of this work, a new method to fabricate an anti-adhesion membrane using biodegradable polymer and hydrogel has been developed. The ideal barrier for preventing postoperative adhesion would have the following properties; it should be (i) resorbable (ii) non-reactive (iii) easy to apply (iv) capable of being fixed in position. In order to fulfill these properties, we adopted solid freeform fabrication method combined with surface modification which includes the hydrogel coating, therefore, inner or outer structure can be controlled and the property of anti adhesion can be improved.
Some biodegradable polymers and other materials such as hydrogels have shown the promising potential for surgical applications. Post surgical adhesion caused by the natural consequence of surgical wound healing results in repeated surgery and harmful effects. Overall, we developed a new method to fabricate an anti-adhesion membrane using biodegradable polymer and hydrogel. It employed a highly accurate three-dimensional positioning system with pressure-controlled syringe to deposit biopolymer solution. The pressure-activated microsyringe was equipped with fine-bore nozzles of various inner-diameters. This process allowed that inner and outer shapes could be controlled arbitrarily when it was applied to a surgical region with arbitrary shapes. In order to fulfill the properties of the ideal barriers f3r preventing postoperative adhesion, we adopted the pre-mentioned method combined with surface modification with the hydrogel coating by which anti-adhesion property was improved.
In this study, SAM (self-assembled monolayer) was applied as an anti-adhesion layer in the nano molding process, to reduce the surface energy between the nano-stamper and the moldeded polymeric nano patterns. Before depositing SAM on the stamper, the nickel stamper was pretreated to remove oxide on the nickel stamper surface. Then, using the solution deposition method, alkanethiol SAM as an anti-adhesion layer was deposited on nickel surface. To examine the effectiveness of the SAM deposition on the metallic nano stamper, the contact angle and the lateral friction force were measured at the actual processing temperature and pressure for the case of nano compression molding and at the actual UV dose for the case of nano UV molding. The surface energy due to SAM deposition on the nickel nano stamper markedly decreased and the high hydrophobic quality of SAM on the nickel stamper maintained under the actual molding environments.
Analysis has been made of the anti-corrosive property of organic coating under the shear stress of the flow by means of AC impedance method. Marine anti-corrosive painted panels were placed in the water channel with varying flow rate, thereby experiencing varying flow shear stress on the surfaces. The velocities of the salt water were ranged from 1.48 to 5.2 m/s and the coating thickness of from $70{\mu}m\;to\;140{\mu}m$. For all coating thicknesses investigated, the poorer anti-corrosive property and the lower adhesion strength have been found for the higher shear stress. It has been found that the shear stress accelerates the aging of organic marine coatings.
BAY11-7082 was initially found to be an anti-inflammatory drug with NF-${\kappa}B$ inhibitory property. In this study, we evaluated modulatory function of BAY11-7082 on U937 cell-cell adhesion induced by CD29 (${\beta}1$-integrins). BAY11-7082 strongly blocked functional activation of CD29 (${\beta}1$-integrins), as assessed by cell-cell adhesion assay. However, this compound did not block a simple activation of CD29, as assessed by cell-fibronectin adhesion assay. In particular, to understand molecular mechanism of BAY11-7082-mediated inhibition, the regulatory roles of CD29-induced actin cytoskeleton rearrangement under cell-cell adhesion and surface level of CD29 were examined using confocal and flow cytometic analysis. Interestingly, this compound strongly suppressed the molecular association of actin cytoskeleton with CD29 at cell-cell adhesion site. Moreover, BAY11-7082 also diminished surface levels of CD29 as well as its-associated adhesion molecule CD147, but not other adhesion molecules such as CD18 and CD43. Therefore, our data suggest that BAY11-7082 may be involved in regulating immune responses managed by CD29-mediated cell-cell adhesion.
Selectins are carbohydrate-binding cell adhesion molecules that play a major role in the initiation of inflammatory responses. Heparin can bind to P-selectin, and its anti-inflammatory property is mainly due to inhibition of P-selectin. However, the strong anticoagulant activity of heparin limits its clinical use. We prepared periodate-oxidized, borohydride-reduced heparin (RO-heparin) by chemical modification and tested its anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory activities. Activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) assays showed that, compared with heparin, RO-heparin had greatly reduced anticoagulant activity. Intravenous administration of this compound led to reduction in the peritoneal infiltration of neutrophils in a mouse acute inflammation model. In vitro cell adhesion experiments demonstrated that the effect of RO-heparin on inflammatory responses was mainly due to inhibiting the interaction of P-selectin with its ligands. These results indicate that RO-heparin may be a safer treatment for inflammation than heparin, especially when selectin is targeted.
Silane surface treatments have been developed as an alternative for toxic and carcinogenic chromate-based treatments for years. It is consistently observed that ultra-thin films offer excellent corrosion protection as well as paint adhesion to metals. The silane performance is comparable to, or in some cases better than, that of chromate layers. Based on the tetra-ethylorthosilicate(TEOS) and methlyl trieethoxysilane(MTES), inorganic sol was synthesized and formed hybrid networks with $SiO_2$ nano particle and polypropylene glycol(PPG) on Zn alloyed steel surface. According to SST results, addition of 10nm and 50nm $SiO_2$ nanoparticle in synthesized solution improved anti-corrosion property by its shear stress relaxation effect during curing process. Also, SST results were shown that anti-corrosive property was affected by the amounts of organic compounds.
