There is increasing interest in the many beneficial aspects of green tea to human such as anti-carcinogenic, anti-aggregant, anti-allergic, anti-bacterial, anti-mutagenic, and anti-oxidant activities. Besides these beneficial aspects, it has been reported that green tea ingredients, especially polyphenolic families (i.e., catechin), have some UV protection property both in vivo and in topical applications. In this study, green tea extract was used as a dyeing stock for cotton and the UV protection property of the dyed cotton fabric was examined. To increase the affinity of cotton fiber to the polyphenolic components in the green tea extract, a natural biopolymer, chitosan, was used as mordanting agent. The effects of chitosan concentration in mordanting on the dyeing characteristics and the UV protection property were examined. Chitosan mordanted green tea dyed cotton showed better dyeing characteristic and higher UV protection property compared with the unmordanted green tea dyed cotton. As the chitosan concentration in mordanting increased, the dyeing efficiency and the UV protection property also increased. Therefore, adapting chitosan mordanting in green tea dyeing can increase the UV protection property of cotton fabrics to some extent.

The behaviors of deterioration in the mechanical and optical properties of paper during sunlight exposure are mainly attributed to UV irradiation. The effect of different additives (anti-UV agents) on paper properties during exposure was studied. The results showed negligible changes in the mechanical properties of samples prepared with two different ways, whereas the shielding ability was increased when the additives were applied to the surface of hand sheets. Also, the paper which is treated with anti UV agents can keep freshness more effectively of agricultural products from UV irradiation.
Soy isoflavones have been reported to possess many physiological activities such as antioxidant activity and inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. This study investigated the photoprotective effects of soybean extract in human fibroblast cell line and hairless mice model. Human fibroblast was treated with soybean extract before and after ultraviolet B (UVB; 290-302 nm) irradiation. In the soybean extract treated group, the cells showed better resistance to ultraviolet (UV) than control group. The amount of type I collagen recovered from the soybean treated group was higher than the vehicle group exposed to UV-induced damage. Moreover, increased expression of metalloproteinases-1 as a result of UV irradiation was suppressed by the soybean extract. Female mice were orally administered soybean extract and irradiated with UVB light for 8 weeks. The effects of the soybean extract on the skin appearance, collagen deposition and epidermal thickness in the UV-damaged mouse skin were analyzed using histopathological methods. In soybean extract treated group, the skin had a better morphology than that of the control group. Furthermore, the amount of type I collagen was increased and overexpression of MMP-1 was reduced in the soybean extract group compared to vehicle group. Additionally, up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by UV irradiation was suppressed by dietary soybean extract treatment. It appears that soybean extract had a photoprotective effect, including anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effect, from UV-induced damage in not only human fibroblast, but also hairless mice. We confirmed that these effects were possibly due to promotion of collagen synthesis and inhibition of MMP-1 expression.

One of the most effective ways of preventing skin aging is to protect the skin from UV radiation, which was identified as the primary cause of photoaging. Therefore, it is necessary to develop natural and environment-friendly materials to the human skin. This study examined the effects of MAAs extracted from Chlamydononas hedleyi on UV protection and anti-inflammation in human skin cells. The function of porphyra-334 in the skin, which was isolated and purified from MMAs mixture, was tested in terms of its UV protective ability and anti-inflammation. As a result, porphyra-334 played a role in protecting the skin from UV radiation and anti-inflammation through the suppression of COX-2 expression. These results suggest that porphyra-334 can be a useful material in cosmetic products because it can protect the skin from UV radiation and anti-inflammation.

It is well-documented that decreased antioxidant defense system by ultraviolet(UV) irradiation is the most important reason to induce the skin aging, especially photoaging. Chlorogenic acid(CA), a nonflavonoid catecholic compound, is present in the diet as part of fruits, tea, coffee and wine and has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic activities. In this study, we examined the effects of CA on the UV -induced photoaging. Firstly, we investigated the protective effect of CA on antioxidant defense system in HaCaT human keratinocytes after UV irradiation treatment. UV irradiation decreased antioxidant defence enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and GSH contents, which were restored by CA. To elucidate the effect of CA, 1% of CA and vehicle were applied to human buttock skin before and after UV irradiation (2MED). CA prevented UV -induced matrix metalloproteinase-1 mRNA expression and procollagen mRNA depression. And CA also increased CD1a(Langerhans cell) expression significantly. Our results suggest that CA has protective effects on UV -induced photoaging by increasing cellular antioxidant defense system. Therefore, CA may be a useful anti-aging agent for cosmetic purpose.

This study is on development of UV-cured water soluble coating composition which have more improved anti-cigar burning to prevent a surface of PVC tile from damage of heat. To make an anti-cigar burning coating solution, thermostable agent that synthesize main materials phosphorus compound, guanidine and ammonium phosphate dibasic used temporary flame retardants, changing their contents from 10 to 30wt% against quantities of resin and compounded. After coating PVC tiles using bar-coating method that can adjust a thickness, we estimated surface properties of coated layer such as anti-cigar burning, adhesive power, chemical resistance, thickness of coating, and so on. Results showed that a coating composition added 30 wt% of phosphorus compound and coated with No.12 bar-coater had the best optimized surface property in anti-cigar burning effect, adhesive power and chemical resistance. Also, we could find anti-cigar burning effect was improved as thermostable agents content and coating thickness increased.

This study is peformed to investigate the effect of water extract from Vaccinium uliginosum L., on melanin production in B 16 melanoma cells, procollagen production and matrix metalloproteinase-1(MMP-1) inhibition in human fibroblast cells. One hundred grams of the Vaccinium uliginosum L. was extracted with 2000 mL of water($90^{\circ}C$, 16h, 2times). The water extracts were lyophilized and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ until used. Dry weight yields of extracts of Vaccinium uliginosum L. were $3\%$(w/w). Extracts from Vaccinium uliginosum L. showed scavenger activities on DPPH radical, superoxide anion radical, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide and singlet oxygen radical. And these substances inhibited release of cyiokines from human keratinocyte after UV B exposure. Therefore we confirmed that extracts from Vaccinium uliginosum L. had antioxidative effect. These substances inhibited purified tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis in B 16 melanoma cells treated/untreated IL-$1{\alpha}$. Moreover this extract stimulated procollagen production and inhibited MMP-1 production in human fibroblast cells treated/untreated IL-$1{\beta}$. Therefore we confirmed that extracts from Vaccinium uliginosum L. had whitening effect. And these substances decreased degree of wrinkle in hairless mouse skin that induced by UV B irradiation. Therefore we confirmed that extracts from Vaccinium uliginosum L. had anti-wrinkle effect. From the above results, it is possible that Vaccinium uliginosum L. may be developed to be an anti-melanogenesis agent and anti-wrinkle agent.
Anti-glare (AG) coating films are applied to various display fields such as liquid crystal displays, LED lighting, and touch panels. In this study, micrometer-sized silica particles were added as fillers in the UV-curable coating solutions to provide anti-glare effect. During this process, the effects of the particle size, content, stirring time, and mixing ratio of silica particles of different sizes were investigated on the haze values and visible light transmittance of the coating films. As a result, as the size of the silica particles increased and the content of the silica particles increased, the haze values increased, but the visible light transmittance decreased. On the other hand, the stirring time did not significantly affect the haze value and transmittance of coating films. In addition, as the mixing ratio of large-sized silica particles increased, the haze value increased, but on the contrary, the visible light transmittance decreased.
Carcinogenesis can be theoretically divided to intiation step and promotion step. Intiation associates with genetic alterations including p53 tumor suppressor gene and ras oncogene. Promotion involves in clonal expansion of of an initiated cell by epigenetic mechanism, mainly through signal transduction and gene expression. Ultraviolet light (UV) acts as both initiator and promoter. Initiation is closely related with DNA damage induced by UV, including cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers, (6-4) photoproducts and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and (6-4) photoproducts are directly induced by UV, while 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine is induced indirectly by the reactive oxygen species. Because initiation is an irreversal genetic event, while promotion is a reversal and epigenetic event, to know the molecular mechanisms of tumor promotion in UV-carcinogenesis is crucial to develop preventive medicine and suppress UV-carcinogenesis. Because ROS is also involved in signal transduction of the cell, anti-oxidant could be the good candidate of anti-promoting agent. Here, we describe the suppressive effect of UV-carcinogenesis by various anti-oxidant including olive oil. In addition, we discuss about the mechanism of UVB-induced expression of cyclooxygenase-2, which might be a representative molecule involved in promotion of UV-carcinogenesis.
The optical and physical and characteristics of hydrogel ophthalmic lens polymerized with addition of 2,6-difluoropyridine, SiPc(silicon 2,9,16,23-tetra-tert-butyl-29H31H-phthalocyanine dihydroxide) and nanodiamond in the basic hydrogel material were evaluated. In particular, the utility of 2,6-difluoropyridine, SiPc and nanodiamond as a hydrogel ophthalmic lens material was investigated. 2,6-difluoropyridine, SiPc and nanodiamond were used as additives. And also, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate and a cross-linker EGDMA were copolymerized in the presence of AIBN as an initiator. The refractive index of 1.4348~1.4361, water content of 33.30~34.02%, UV-B transmittance of 4.77~67.50%, UV-A transmittance of 1.45~89.19% and visible transmittance of 32.12~92.21% were obtained. The results of hydrogel lens containing 2,6-difluoropyridine (add 5%) showed antibiosis for staphylococcus aureus. The produced copolymer is suitable for hydrogel soft ophthalmic lenses with antibiotic and anti-UV effect.
