The effect of Bituminous and Anthracite coal ash(fly ash) on the performance of Chinese cabbage on an acid soil was studied through a pot experiment. The levels of application of the materials tested were five, 10 and 15% of dry soil weight. Regardless of the kind of fly ash, the application of it, tended to increase the yield of Chinese cabbage by 13 to 24% in fresh weight. Difference in application levels did not result in the difference in increasing the yield of Chinese cabbage. The application of fly ash tended to lower the all of the mineral nutrient contents in the Chinese cabbage, excepting boron. Boron content tended to increase along with the application of fly ash. Bituminous ash raised the pH of soil and increased available P, exchangeable Ca and soluble boron in the soil remarkably. Anthracite ash, on the other hand, did not increase the contents of other components in the soil, than soluble born.

Circulating fluidized bed combustion (hereafter CFBC) technology enables an efficient combustion for the materials with low heating values such as high ash coal and sludges. It also has desulfation function by adding limestone directly to combustor. The CFBC has been considered as one of the best processes for low grade coal containing with large contents of ash and sulfur. In this paper, in order to various tests were performed to find the optimum desulfation condition for CFBC using Korean Anthracite. We surveyed possible parameters and conducted desulfation efficiency test in D Thermal Power Plant. In addition, the result of some fundamental theoretical consideration was discussed with CFBC. Optimum limestone size could be considered to be 0.1-0.3mm irrespective of combustion temperature and Ca/S molar ratio variation. Desulfation efficiency increased as the molar ratio increased. Because desulfation process occurs at the surface at higher temperature, inner side of limestone can't be utilized. When surface area is not appropriate, some SO$_2$ emit without reaction. Optimum molar ratio should be decided after considering chemical and physical properties of limestone and coal thoroughly such as particle size, pore size and HGI. Commercial CFBC is operated at Ca/S 1.6. Combustor temperature 840-87$0^{\circ}C$ shows good desulfation efficiency.
In this study characteristics for reclaimed ash was studied to enlarge the usage of reclaimed ash which is reaching to 72 million ton producted from whole thermal power plants in South Korea. Fly ash and bottom ash are reclaimed separately at some of thermal power plants. However, typically bottom ash and fly ash are mixed when they are buried at most of the thermal power plant, as a result the engineering characteristics of ponded ash are not investigated properly. In order to investigate the engineering characteristics of the ponded ash, laboratory tests were performed with ponded ash and fly ash from youngheung and samcheonpo thermal power plants. Specific gravity, unit weight, and grain size analysis test were fulfilled to evaluate the physical characteristics and triaxial permeability test, direct shear test, unconfined compressive strength test, compaction test were performed to evaluate the mechanical characteristics. And also engineering characteristics of coal ash from anthracite and Bituminous thermal power plants were compared and studied respectively. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that using coal ash from Bituminous thermal power plants can be effective in the place where lightweight materials are required and using coal ash from anthracite thermal power plants can be effective as backfill material which require higher permeability. Finally, it was confirmed that fly ash from youngheung thermal power plants which has the lowest permeability among the tested material is suitable for a field requiring impermeable material.

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of treatment of fly ash on heavy metal contents in the grain. Rice was cultivated on the two types of paddy field, clay loam and sandy loam soil, with 0, 4, 8, 12t/10a of anthracite fly ash and bituminous coal fly ash, respectively. And soybean was cultivated on the same types of upland field with those of 0, 3, 6, 9t/10a, respectively. Also. rice and soybean were cultivated the same types of paddy and upland field with those ashes of 0, 12ton/10a and 0, 9ton/10a, yearly for three years. At the harvest time, the heavy metal contents in rice and soybean were Investigated. The results were summarized as follows : 1. Amount of application. 1) The contents of Cd in brown rice increased in the clay loam soil. Cr and Ni increased sandy loam soil with the application of anthracite fly ash. 2) The contents of Zn in rice increased in the sandy loam soil with the application of bituminous coal fly ash. 3) The contents of Cu in soybean increased with the application of anthracite and bituminous coal fly ash, but Zn, Pb, Cr and Ni increased only with the bituminous. 2. Successive application. 1) The contents of Cd in brown rice increased in the clay and sandy loam soil, however Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr and Fe increased only in sandy loam soil with the anthracite fly ash. 2) The contents of Cr in soybean were increased in the clay and sandy loam soil, but Cu, Fe increased only sandy loam soil with anthracite fly ash. 3) The contents of Cd, Zn, and Cr in brown rice increased in the clay and sandy loam soil, but those of Cu, Mn increased only in the sandy loam soil with application of bituminous. 4) The contents of Cd, Pb, and Cr in soybean increased in the sandy loam soil with the application of bituminous coal fly ash.
Coal fly ashes collected from the Samcheonpo and the Seocheon Power Plants were analyzed for major and minor components and heavy metals such as As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, V and Zn in order to suggest basic data to apply coal fly ash as fertilizer or soil ameliorator. The specific gravity of the samples was less than 2.0, and amounts of organic matter range from 5.0% to 12.3%. The identified minerals by XRD were mainly quartz, mullite and pyrite in anthracite coal, and mainly quartz and mullite in bituminous coal. Generally, the contents of heavy metal elements analyzed were lower less than those of soil, though higher in some samples. Element couples of some elements( e.g., As-Mo, Zn ; Mo-As, Sb, V, Zn ; Sb-Zn ) show positive correlations with each other, but the high correlations of toxic elements such as As, Pb, Cd and Hg indicate to give attention to apply coal fly ash as fertilizer or soil ameliorator.
The purpose of this study was to disclose the manufacturing process of activated carbon using coal. It investigated the influences on the physical properties that were manufactured activated carbon by using anthracite coal, bituminous coal under carbonizated and activated condition. The adsorption capacities of organic material were superior when the ash content was lower 5∼10%, and the iodine value was about 1,000 mg/g, the adsorption capacity decreased rapidly when ash content was over 15%. The manufactured activated carbon were found characteristics such as the iodine value was over 1,031 mg/g, the specific surface area was over 1,032 $m^2$/g and the hardness was over 95% under manufacturing conditions which were carbonizated temperature of $600^{\circ}C$( 180 minute), activated temperature of 95$0^{\circ}C$(210 minute) and steam weight of 6 $m\ell$/min.100 g coal.

The purpose of this study was to examine the uses of coal ash as a type of construction material. The methods of examination were chemical anlysis, soil laboratory test and the soil vibration test. Materials used were coal ash obtained as a by-product from 5 thermal power plants in Yongdong, Yongwol, Sochon(anthracite coal) and in Samchonpo and Honam (bituminous coal). Over 70% of the coal ash consisted of silica and alumina. The fly ash grain size showed a uniform distribution from fine-sand to silt, and that of the bottom ash showed from sand to gravel. The specific gravity and density of the coal ash were low. The long term strength increased gradually due to the self-setting property resulting from pozzolanic activity. The shear strength was higher than that of general soil. Cohesion and optimum moisture content of anthracite coal ash were higher than bituminous coal ash, whereas the maximum dry density was higher in bituminous coal ash. The coal ash dynamic Young's modulous curve range was similar to that of general soil. Of the results from the soil vibration test by car-running, the size relative acceleration level in the ash pond was higher than that of natural ground, but the damping ratio was lower than that of natural ground near the ash pond. The coal ash has more advantageous engineering properties than general soil with particles of the same size. For example, the California Bearing Ratio of the bottom ash at both Yongdong and Yongwol was 77~137%. Therefore we expect that if further study is done, coal ash can be used as a construction material when reclaiming seashore, construction embankments, road construction, making right-weight aggregate, or as a general construction material.

In this study, the proper mixing ratio of fly ash to bottom ash is evaluated and bearing capacity of this mixed ash is examined for use of highway embankment and subgrade materials in large quantities. Independently of the mixing ratio of fly ash to bottom ash or the method of compaction test, maximum dry density ${\gamma}_{dmax}$ and CBR value of anthracite mixed coal ash is greater than that of bituminous mixed coal ash. The mixed ashes to contain more fly ash than that of which the ratio of fly ash to bottom ash is 8 : 2, are slaked readily when the water contents of compaction are greater than optimum moisture content O.M.C. The proper mixing ratios of fly ash to bottom ash are about 5 : 5 to 6 : 4. Coal ashes mixed with these ratios exhibit proper physical and geotechnical properties for use of highway embankment and subgrade materials, and enable coal ashes to be used in large quantities.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate mineralogical and chemical changes during natural weathering, and assess the mobility of major and trace elements. Yongwol power plant utilize anthracite coal which is mainly composed of illite, kaolinite, pyrophyllite and quartz in mineralogy. Coal and coal-derived fly ash samples were sampled by the electrostatic precipitator in Yongwol coal-fired power plant in Korea. Short term weathered fly ash were also collected in ash disposal mound, and two profile soil samples were taken from an ash near the power plant. Amorphous materials are the main component of the fly ash, and mullite, quartz, magnetite and heamatite are present in all coal-derived fly ash. In chemistry, Si and Al are the most abundant elements of the total content. The ash samples were fractionated into upper $90{\mu}m$ and under $45{\mu}m$ size. Finer particles show higher concentrations in metal contents including Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, V, Zn and Pb. Concentration of Zn and Pb are nearly 4 times higher concentration in the finer particles. For the profile samples, the concentrations of $SiO_2$, $Na_2O$, MgO and $K_2O$ generally show increasing trends with depth, whereas those of $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ appear to decrease with depth. Content of MnO does not show any specific depth trend. For the trace elements, Co, Cu, Ni and V show increasing concentrations with depth.
