A New Carboxylate Selective Anion Receptor Utilizing Amide and Carbamate Hydrogens

  • A new anion receptor utilizing carbamate functionality as hydrogen bonding site has been designed and synthesized. This new receptor 2 has two amide hydrogens and two carbamate hydrogens anchored at 1,8-position of anthracene. These four hydrogens form a concave structure for the anions and the receptor 2 was found to be a selective receptor for acetate among the anions investigated.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the immunopathological effects of 7, 12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene(DMBA) on mouse thymus. DMBA was administered subcutaneously to BALB/C mice by interscapular single injection of 50 or 100 ng/g of body weight. Each DMBA treatment group and additional corn oil control group of mice were studied on day 1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 following the injection of DMBA. DMBA treatment resulted in marked decreases in weights and cellularity of thymus. Thymus weights were decreased by 50.6 and 66.0% at 21 days, respectively, after treatment of 50ng/g and 100 ng/g DMBA.

Density Functional Theory Study of Vibrational Spectra of Anthracene Neutral and Radical Cation

  • Ab initio Hartree-Fock and Becke 3-Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) density functional theory calculations using 6-31G* basis set were carried out to study the vibrational spectra of anthracene neutral (h10 and d10) and radical cation (h10). We report results of the fundamental vibrational frequencies obtained on the basis of the calculations. The assignments of fundamentals show a one-to-one correspondence between the observed and calculated fundamentals.

  • Photocyclizable poly(cinnam-4'-yl methyl methacrylate) derivatives bearing methoxy benzene (PMCMMA), anthracene (PACMMA), and coumarin (PCCMMA) have been synthesized via Heck type reaction. Three different types of polymers are photoreactable usin g linearly polarized UV light and applicable as liquid crystal alignment layer. Anthracence and coumarin containing polymers (PACMMA, PCCMMA) have better thermal stability than PMCMMA. This observation may be attributed to the glass transition temperature elevation due to the bulky size and another photocrosslinking site provided by anthracene or coumarin group.

  • Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAHs) contamination arises from several sources including processing of food(smoking, direct drying, cooking) and environmental contamination of air, water, or soil, the later being considered as the most important. In this study, to establish the analytical method for some PAHs[benzo(a)anthracene, chrysene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, benzo(g,h,i)perylene, indeno(1,2,3-c,d)pyrene] in fish, alkali digestion time, extraction solvents, elution volume of florisil cartridge for clean-up have been optimized. The methodology involved saponification and extraction with n-hexane, clean-up on Sep-Pak florisil cartridges and determination by HPLC/FLD(High Performance Liquid Chromatography/Fluorescence Detector). Overall method recoveries for 8 PAHs spiked into these products ranged from 90 to 106%.

Potentiometric Determination of Postssium Ion Using 15-Crown-5 Derivatives with Anthracene for the Selective Material (안트라센을 포함하는 15-Crown-5 유도체를 이온선택성 물질로 이용한 칼륨이온의 전위차법 정량)

  • Newly synthesized 15-Crown-5 derivatives including anthracene were used as neutral carriers for ion selective electrodes to determine potassium ion by potentiometry. Among the five neutral carriers studied in this work, N-(4'-benzo-15-crown-5-ether)-anthracene-9-imine was found to be the best in terms of selectivity and stability. The optimal composition of ion selective membrane was 1.0, 33.0 and 66.0 wt% for neutral carrier, PVC and plasticizer, resperctively. Addition of KTpCIPB used as a lipophilic additive improved the Nernst slope and the selectivity of potassium ion over alkali and alkaline earth metals. Especially, the selectivity of potassium ion over ammonium ion was remarkably good ($logK^{pot}_(K^+,NH_4^+}$=-2.59). The response time was also excellent ($t_{100}$=5sec) and continuous use of this electrode for three weeks has not changed the selectivity and analytical characteristics.

Degradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Selected White-rot Fungi and the Influence of Lignin Peroxidase

  • The white-rot fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporium ATCC 24725, Pleurotus ostreatus ATCC 32783, Lentinus edodes ATCC 24462, and Trametes versicolor ATCC 42530 were studied for their ability to degrade lignin, phenanthrene, and anthracene. Lignin in rice-straw was degraded by 14.4, 28.73, and 33.88% by P. chrysosporium, T. versicolor, and P. ostreatus, respectively. Approximately 12% and 83% of phenanthrene was degraded in 1 and 5 days, respectively, when the pre-grown mycelIium matrix of P. ostreatus. was incubated with 10 ppm of phenanthrene in modified Kirk's medium (nitrogen limited) at $25^{\circ}C$. Approximately 2%> and 61% of phenanthrene was degraded when the phenanthrene concentration was increased to 30 ppm. Similar trends were observed with phenanthrene using P. chrysosporium. Mycelial growth of T. versicolor was less inhibited at 30 ppm phenanthrene than for P. ostreatus and P. chrysosporium. Better degradation of phenanthrene by T. versicolor may be attributed to better mycelium growth. One hundred percent of 15 ppm anthracene was degraded in 10 days by both P. chrysosporium and T. versicolor. 40 ppm anthracene inhibited the mycelial growth of P. chrysosporium. lignin peroxidase activity, which was previously reported to be involved in initial phenanthrene oxidation, was also detected from the culture broth of the strains tested. The rates of lignin peroxidase production in the cultures were not consistent with the rate of PAH hydrolysis during incubation.

Application of in-situ Flushing to the Soil Contaminated by Organic Compounds (유기물질에 의해 오염된 토양에 대한 in-situ세척기법의 적용성 연구)

  • A series of batch and lab-scale continuous tests were conducted to optimize the design parameters for the full-scale in-situ soil flushing experiments. The cleaning abilities of the surfactant solutions of Tween 80, Triton X-100 and SDS were compared for the soil artificially contaminated by hydrophobic organic contaminants: n-dodecane, naphthalene and anthracene. Tween 80 and Triton X-100 were shown to be efficient for n-dodecane. SDS and Tween 80 were shown to be efficient for naphthalene and anthracene. At the end of each column test, the sorbed amount of surfactant to soil was also measured. Tween 80 was found to be the least adsorbed surfactant to soil. The flushing ability at flowrate of 7 ml/min, was hampered comparing to flowrate of 3 and 5 ml/min. Initial pH of the soil did not significantly affect the flushing efficiencies. Tween 80 was determined as the most harmless surfactant for the Gram(+) and Gram(-) bacteria.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the immunopathological effects of 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene(DMBA) on spleen in mice. DMBA was administered subcutaneously to BALB/C mice by interscapular single injection of 50 or 100${\mu}g/g$ of body weight. Each DMBA treatment group and additional corn oil control group of mice were studied on day 1,3,7,14 and 21 following the injection of DMBA. DMBA treatment resulted in marked decrease in weights and cellularity of spleen. Spleen weights showed the greatest decrease at 14days after 50${\mu}g/g$ DMBA treatment, and at 21days after 100${\mu}g/g$ DMBA treatment. Spleen cellularity was similarly deceased in comparison with spleen weights. Spleen showed morphologically no typical changes throughout the experiment after 50${\mu}g/g$ DMBA treatment. Following the treatment of 100${\mu}g/g$ DMBA the spleen showed severe fibrosis, hemosiderin precipitation, and megakaryocytes decrease in red pulp at 14 days, while hemopoietic function was partly restored in addition to the appearance of a few megakaryocytes at 21 days. In spleen sections treated with antibodies to IgM or Thy1.2, lymphocytes strongly stained with IgM antibody were infiltrated around the central artery within the white pulp, and T-lymphocytes of periarterial lymphatic sheath (PALS) were diminished and destructed in sections treated with Thy1.2 antibody, at 14 days after the treatment of 100${\mu}g/g$ DMBA. By the electron microscopy phagocytic epithelial cells or macrophages were remarkably increased in spleen at 14and 21days following the treatment of 100${\mu}g/g$ DMBA.
