Soil type in LID infiltration practices plays a major role in runoff reduction efficacy. In this study, the effects of infiltration rate of foundation ground under bioretention on annual runoff reduction rate was evaluated using LIDMOD3 which is a simple excel based model for evaluating LID practices. A bioretention area of about 3.2 % was required to capture surface runoff from an impervious area for a 25.4 mm rainfall event. The relative error of runoff from bioretention using LIDMOD3 is 10 % less than that of SWMM5.1 for a total rainfall event of 257.1 mm during the period of Aug. 1 ~ 18, 2017, hence, the applicability of LIDMOD3 was confirmed. Annual runoff reduction rates for the period 2008 ~ 2017 were evaluated for various infiltration rates of foundation ground under the bioretention which ranged from 0.001 to 0.600 m/day and were converted to annual runoff reduction for hydrologic soil group. The runoff reduction rates within hydrologic soil group C and D were steeply increased through increased infiltration rate but not steep within hydrologic A and B with reduction rates ranging from 53 ~ 68 %. The estimated time required to completely empty a bioretention which has a storage depth of 0.632 m is 3.5 ~ 6.9 days and we could assume that the annual average of antecedent rainfall is longer than 3.5 ~ 6.9 days. Therefore, we recommended B type as the minimum hydrologic soil group installed LID infiltration practices for high runoff reduction rate.

One of the main factor that effects on the CN's value in SCS Curve Number method for the estimation of direct runoff is the antecedent soil moisture condition (AMC). It is also common to use the AMC-III in hydrologic practice, which provides the largest runoff as possible. In this paper, AMC defending on the rainfall characteristics is analyzed using daily rainfall data at rainy season (June~September) of the Seoul station from 1961 to 2002. The probability mass function of AMC is also investigated to analyze the variation of AMC based on climate change, scenarios from several General Circulation Model (GCM) predictions. As a results we can find that the occurrence of AMC-I is reduced, and AMC-III is increased, whereas AMC-II does not change.
A long-term nationwide nonpoint-source pollution monitoring program was initiated by the Ministry of Environment Republic of Korea (ME) in 2007. Monitoring devices including rain gauges, flow meters, and automatic samplers were installed in monitoring sites to collect dynamic runoff data in 2008-2009. More than 10 rainfall events with three or more antecedent dry days were monitored per year. More than 10 samples were collected and analyzed per event. So far, five land use types (single family, apartments, education facilities, power plants, and other public facilities) have been monitored 23 to 24 times each. Characterization of the runoff from different land use types will aid unit load estimation in Korea and hopefully in other countries with similar land use. The monitoring results will be reported regularly at national and international levels.
Long-term monitoring was conducted to identify the runoff characteristics of non-point source according to the three forest types (deciduous forest, coniferous forest and mixed forest) in this study. Rainfall events of each deciduous forest, coniferous forest, and mixed forest were 10, 8, 12, respectively. Average runoff depth and coefficients of each forest type were founded to be coniferous forest and were followed by others in turns : deciduous forest, and mixed forest because various conditions (i.e., rainfall property, Antecedent Precipitation Index (API), soil property, slope, and forest management) could change runoff characteristics. In the analysis of the first flush phenomenon, it showed that SS and T-P were sensitive for the first flush phenomenon. The first flush phenomenon of them were showed differently by rainfall intensity, rainfall duration, and amount of rainfall. The research results indicated that range of the Event Mean Concentration (EMC) values in deciduous forest were 0.8~2.4 mg/L for $BOD_5$, 2.0~13.4 mg/L for $COD_{Mn}$, 1.3~2.9 mg/L for DOC, 1.150~3.913 mg/L for T-N, 0.010~0.350 mg/L for T-P and 3.1~291.8 mg/L for SS and in coniferous forest were 0.8~2.2 mg/L for $BOD_5$, 1.9~3.6 mg/L for $COD_{Mn}$, 1.0~2.0 mg/L for DOC, 1.025~2.957 mg/L for T-N, 0.002~0.084 mg/L for T-P and 0.8~5.4 mg/L for SS. Also, range of the EMC values in mixed forest were 1.3~2.3 mg/L for $BOD_5$, 2.4~4.8 mg/L for $COD_{Mn}$, 1.1~2.1 mg/L for DOC, 0.385~2.703 mg/L for T-N, 0.016~0.080 mg/L for T-P and 2.3~30.0 mg/L for SS.
In order to establish a rainfall-runoff model, calibration of hydrological parameters for the model is very important. Especially, Curve Number(CN), estimated by NRCS method, is a main factor to apply unit hydrograph theory to calculation of peak discharge. For using NRCS method, it is needed selecting AMC because CN is strongly connected with that. In this study, we focus our concern on finding a applicable standard for selecting AMC for CN. For this, three dams which are Boryeong, Habchon, Namgang are selected as target basins to use observed data including rainfall and dam inflow. As a result of this research, it is found that CN must be included as a calibrated parameter to calculate effective rainfall for the rainfall-runoff model. Also, it is preferred to use PWRMSE of HEC-HMS program as a objective function for optimizing hydrological parameters. From the analyzing result of variation of AMC for peak discharge, it is recommended to apply AMC-III to estimation of CN for calculating effective rainfall of design hydrograph.
This study characterized and qualitatively analyzed the storm events recorded in the Annals of Chosun Dynasty. First of all, the storm events are retrieved using the like Keun-Bi (big rain), Keun-Mul (high water), Hong-Soo (flood), and Pok-Woo (torrential rain). The storm events cited as Keun-Bi do not include any in detail explanation about the storm and damages, but the storm events cited as Keun-Mul, Hong-Soo, and Pok-Woo generally include in detail information. That is, the Keun-Bi was named simply based on the amount of rainfall, but the other three were named considering the runoff with significant damages. Evaluation of effective rainfall derived by the simple SCS method showed that most storm events named Keun-Bi had small antecedent five day rainfall amount to be categorized into AMC-1, but the others mostly into AMC-III. As result, the effective rainfall of Keun-Mul, Hong-Soo, and Pok-Woo were estimated much higher than those of Keun-Bi. Most storm events with lengthy explanation belong to the events with lots of damages, which also includes Keun-Mul, Hong-Soo, and Pok-Woo.
Low Impact Development (LID) techniques are eco-friendly storm water management process for water circulation restoration and non-point pollutant reduction. In this study, four LID techniques (Small constructed wetland, Infiltration trench box, Infiltration trench, Vegetated swale) were selected and installed as a real size at the real site. All facilities were evaluated as monitoring under the real environmental climate situation and an artificial rain with exceeding design rainfall. In various rainfall, runoff reduction efficiency and non-point pollutant removal efficiency are increased to the bigger Surface Area of LID (SA)/Catchment Area (CA) ratio and the bigger Storage Volume of LID (SV)/Catchment Area (CA) ratio. Runoff did not occur at all rainfall event (max. 17.2 mm) in infiltration trench and vegetated swale. But Small constructed wetland was more efficient at less than 10 mm, a efficiency of infiltration trench box was similar at different rainfall. Although different conditions (such as structural material of LID, rainfall flow rate, antecedent dry periods), LID techniques are good effects not only water circulation improvement but also water quality improvement.

The semi-distributed rainfall runoff model of SWAT is applied to the Seom-river experimental watershed. The simulations of various antecedent periods before the targeted simulation periods of 2002 to 2009 are not necessary despite of the slight appearance of corresponding changes in simulated total runoff. The simulated results of total runoff by using various numbers of soil layer maps have little differentiated nevertheless the slight changes in simulated results have been appeared. The 7 parameters of CANMX, $CN_2$, ESCO, GW_REVAP, SOL_ALB, SOL_AWC, and SOL_K greatly govern the rainfall runoff are confirmed and their sensitivity analyses have been carried out. The optimal parameters used in SWAT are derived by SUFI-2 of SWAT-CUP. The NS and $R^2$ are 0.99 and 0.98, respectively which is shown the good agreement between the observed and the simulated results. The uncertainty factors of P-factor and R-factor are 0.85 and 0.06, respectively which is also shown the high efficiency of the model. The high applicability is also shown with improving the RMSE in SWAT model simulation using the parameters estimated by SUFI-2 of SWAT-CUP.
Seven heavy metal concentrations (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) were continuously analyzed for twenty rainfall events in 2017~2018 in an urban basin. The overall and dynamic correlations between runoff characteristics and heavy metal concentrations were examined. The peak metal concentration generally appeared in the initial runoff but found to be delayed when the rainfall intensity was low. The rainfall duration had no relationship with either heavy metal concentrations or their total mass. Dynamics of heavy metal mass (load), with the exception of Cu and Zn, showed strong correlation with the 30 minute rainfall intensity (0.60~0.88) and runoff volume (0.74~0.89). While event mean concentration (EMC) showed positive correlation (0.54~0.73) with antecedent dry days (ADD), no significant relationship was found between runoff volume and pollutant concentration. This implies that the pollutants built up on the surface during dry days are washed off even with low rainfall energy. The dynamics of heavy metal and TSS concentrations showed good correlation (0.68~0.87). This result shows that the metals are transported along with solid particles as adsorbate in surface runoff. Regular street sweeping will reduce significant amount of heavy metal loads in urban surface runoff.
This study was conducted to simulate storm hydrographs on a small forested watershed using TOPMODEL, which is a distributed hydrological model. The Myeongseong watershed, which is 58.3 ha in size, was selected to monitor rainfall and runoff data. The Monte Carlo simulation was also used to calibrate parameters of TOPMODEL. Six rainfall-runoff pairs collected at the watershed in the year 1997 were used for parameter calibration, and eight rainfall-runoff pairs collected during the period of $1998\sim1999$ were used for validation effort. The errors of runoff volume ranged from -2.74% to 1.81%, and an average value of model efficiency in terms of runoff volume was 0.92 for the calibration period. The average value of observed peak discharge was $0.324m^3\;s^{-1}$ for six rainfall-runoff pairs, while the prediction value was $0.295m^3\;s^{-1}$. The simulation errors of peak discharge varied according to rainfall characteristics and antecedent condition, within ranges of -27.65% to -1.13%. The model efficiency for the validation period was 0.92. For the validation period, observed peak discharges have an average value of $0.087m^3\;s^{-1}$ and average value of simulated peak discharge was $0.090m^3\;s^{-1}$. Observed and simulated values of time to peak for the calibration period were 18.3 hrs and 11.0 hrs, respectively, and 16.6 hrs and 13.5 hrs, respectively, for the validation period.
