The antagonistic activities of 30 strains of lactobacilli against Helicobacter pylori were determined and Lactobacillus helveticus CU631 has been selected as the strain which possesses the strongest inhibitory effect in the disc diffusion assay showing inhibition zone diameter of $10{\pm}1.5mm$, whereas those of L. plantarum and L. fermentum have been shown to be $4.0{\pm}0.6mm$. H. pylori G88016 revealed the highest vacuolating toxin producing activity among the 8 strains, the inhibitory activity of L. helveticus CU631 in vacuolating toxin producing activity of H. pylori manifested in the co-culture of two strains and in the 5:5 mixture of supernatant of the two strains. Both L. helveticus CU631 and cell free culture supernatant had a strong inhibitory activities in urease and cytotoxin producing activities of H. pylori NCTC11637 and CJH12. An accelerated proteolytic activity of water soluble peptides by L. helveticus CU631 during the refrigeration storage has been manifested in the cream cheese. DNA seqences of 16S-23S ribosomal RNA spacer region showed typical pattern among the various strains of L. helveticus, which could be used in the identification of L. helveticus CU 631.
The white cottony stem rot pathogen Sclerotinia scierotiorum was subjected to 70 different isolates of actinomycetes indigenous to Jordan as biological control agents. Forty of them demonstrated chitinase activity on crab shell chitin agay (CCA) media and they were segregated into three groups: 14 highly active, 12 moderately active, and 14 with low activity, with average clearing zones of (4.7-8.3), (3.7-4.3), and (2.3-3.3) mm surrounding colonies on CCA, respectively. Further, these isolates were able to inhibit radial mycelium growth of the pathogen and were categorized into three antagonistic groups: 13 strong, 13 moderate, and 14 weak antagonists, with antibiosis inhibition Bones of (32.0-45.7), (22.7-31.3), and (3.7-22.3) mm, respectively. High levels of chitinase activity of the isolates Ma3 (8.3 mm), Jul (7.7 mm), and Sa8 (7.7 mm) with their antagonistic activity against mycelium growth of 45.7, 44.3, and 40.7 mm were observed, respectively. These isolates exhibited fungicidal activity against sclevotia of S. sclerotiorum. On the other hand, isolates Na5, Aj3, and Aj2 that produced no chitinase showed fungistatic effect only.
Lactobacillus acidophilus KFRI 233, a strain isolated from human, was selected as a candidate for probiotics due to its excellent growth in MRS broth where no special anaerobic condition is required. Both simultaneous and deferred agar diffusion assays exhibited Lb. acidophilus KFRI 233 to possess an antagonistic effect against Clostridium perfringens. Its antagonistic effect was pH dependent Associative culture of KFRI 233 and Cl. perfringens in broth resulted in maximum 94.04% inhibition of Cl. perfringens. $\beta$-Galactosidase activity of KFRI 233 was higher than other tested strains that are sold as commercial probiotics. Survival of KFRI 233 in pasteurized skim milk (4$^{\circ}C$) and Sherbet mix (-15$^{\circ}C$) after 7 days of storage were 71.9 and 105.5%, respectively.
Aflatoxin B1 is known as the most potent mycotoxin produced by several fungi. It has been demonstrated to be not only carcinogenic but teratogenic and mutagenic as well in humans. To prevent or inactivate aflatoxins, several chemical of physical methods were tested for ammoniation, using insecticides as an wxample, but they were unsuitable for food products. On the contrary, biological control by antagonistic microorgani는 is and ideal method. In order to control aflatoxin B1 biologically, the antagonists #07, #63, #75, #74, and #61 were separated from various samples by using the antagonistic activity test. Among them, culture filtrate part A (non heat-treated) of #63 and #74 on aflatoxin B1 produced by Aspergillus fkavus were shown to be 95% and 75%, respectively. Based on the morphological characteristics, #63 was deduced as an Azospirillum sp.
Antagonistic bacteria active against phytopathogenic fungi, Phytophthora capsici, Pythium ultimum, Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, and Fusarium oxysporum were isolated from greenhouse soils. An antifungal compound was extracted by ethyl acetate from acidified culture filtrate and purified through column chromatography and thin layer chromatography. Activity-guided bioassay was followed throughout the purification steps using Pythium ultimum as a test organism. The purified antifungal compound was identified as phenylacetic acid (PAA) based on the data obtained from IR, EI/MS, $^1H-NMR$, and $^{13}C-NMR$. Two different isolates, which had vast differences in differential characteristics except 16S rDNA sequence homology, produced the same compound, phenylacetic acid. $ED_{50}$ values of the phenylacetic acid against P. ultimum, P. capsici, R. solani, B. cinerea, and F. oxysporum were 45, 21, 318, 360, and 226 ppm, respectively.
Attempts were made to investigate the antagonistic activity of soil borne microorganisms Pseudomonas spp. and Trichoderma spp. against to the pathogens of turf diseases Rhizoctionia solani spp. and Pythiom spp. in vitro by a dual culture bioassay. Inhibition zone between the edge of the my-celium and the margin of each antagonistic bacteria, Pocudontonas, on potato dextrose agar was measured 3 days after incubation at 28˚C. Psudomonas spp. showed relatively high inhibition of mycelium growth of R. solani AG-i and Pythium spp. which cause brown patch and pythium blight, respectively. Antagonistic fungi Trichodenma spp. also showed effective inhibition against mycelium growth of both pathogens, more proper methods of measuring the inhibition effects were required because of fast growth of Trichodenna hypae. Brown patch and pythium blight both, re-quire most higher rate of fungicide use to control in golf curses in Korea. Application of antagon-istic microorganisms are useful as biological resources an approach to sole environmental contamination.
Trichoderma spp. are the aggressive causal agents for green mold disease on oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp.) cultivation. Antifungal bacteria (KATB 99121, KATB 99122 and KATB 99123 strains) were isolated from the compost for Pleurotus ostreatus. Among these bacterial strains, KATB 99121 strain showed an excellent inhibitory activity to the pathogens for green molds such as T. harzianum, T. viride and T. hamatum and an animal pathogen, Candida albicans, but did not affect on the culture of Pleurotus ostreatus (2209, Chunchu 2 and Wonhyung strains). KATB 99121 strain secreted amylolytic, proteolytic and cellulolytic exoenzymes. KATB 99122 and KATB 99123 strains excreted amylolytic, proteolytic, cellulolytic, lipolytic exoenzymes and showed ${\beta}$-glucosidase activity. Further studies will be conducted on the development of microbial fungicides using the antagonistic bacteria for the control of green mold disease on Pleurotus spp.
The rhizobacteria of Panax notoginseng were isolated from six sites in Yanshan, Maguan and Wenshan Counties, Yunnan Province of China, and their antagonistic activity against P. notoginseng root-rot fungal pathogens was determined. Of the 574 rhizobacteria isolated, 5.8% isolates were antagonistic in vitro to at least one of the five pathogens, Cylindrocarpon didynum, Fusarium solani, Phytophthora cactorum, Phoma herbarum, and Rhizoctonia solani. The number of rhizo bacteria and the number that inhibited fungi differed depending on sampling sites and isolation methods. Rhizobacteria isolated from the site in Yanshan and Maguan showed more antagonistic effect than them in Wenshan. Heat treatment of rhizosphere soil at $80^{\circ}C$ for 20 min scaled the antagonists up to 14.0%. Antagonistic bacteria in the roots proportioned 3.9% of the total isolates. The most antagonistic isolates 79-9 and 81-4 are Bacillus subtilis based on their 168 rDNA sequence and biochemical and physiological characteristics. Identification and evaluation of antagonistic bacteria against P. notoginseng root-rot pathogens in the main planting areas improved our understanding of their distribution in rhizosphere soil. Furthermore these results indicated that the interactions between biocontrol agent and soil microbes should be seriously considered for the successful survival and biocontrol efficacy of the agents in soil.
Recently, the importance of management and cultivation of grasses has been increased in Korea. Among these cultural practices, the appropriate control of diseases is considered more important than other cultivation techniques such as fertilization and irrigation. The damages of brown patch and large patch caused by Rhizoctonia spp. and Pythium blight caused by Pythium spp. are serious in the major cultivation area of turfgrass in Korea. Since these diseases are difficult to control by agrochemicals, the damages are very serious if these are occured. The periodic spray of agrochemicals, to protect and control these diseases could make some problems of toxicity and environmental pollution as well as rising of non-target diseases. Therefore, the biological methods to control diseases have been required to decrease problems resulted from overuse of agrochemicals, to conserve natural ecosystem, and to control effectively diseases of grasses in the long period. The number of studies about biological control using antagonistic microorganisms have been increased for last half century. However, the application of biological control method has been very limited. In this study, thirteen isolates of R. cerealis, 8 isolates of R. solani and 3 isolates of Phthyn spp. have been isolated from diseased turfgrass in golf course and grass-culture area that have patch and wilting symptoms of zoysia grass and creeping bentgrass. Isolation frequency of R. cerealis and R. solani was high in especially zoysiagrass, while Pythym spp. was isolated from bent grass at low frequency but showed high pathogenicity. Totally, 205 isolates of soil microorganisms were isolated in this study as primary antagonistic microorganism by Herr's triple agar layer plate and dual culture method using rhizosphere of grasses, soil of crop field as the source of antagonistic microorganisms. Among the 205 isolates, 23 isolates were actinomycetes and 182 isolates were bacteria. All of the actinomycetes were isolated by Herr's method. Antagonistic effect of primary isolated microorganisms was tested for in vitro mycelial growth inhibition against pathogenic fungi isolated from grasses and for inhibition of disease occurrence in 24 well tissue culture plate and pot experiment. Then, four isolated of bacteria which are BG23, BG74, BG136 and BG171 were selected as antagonistic microorganisms against soil-born pathogenic fungi of bentgrass.

The use of novel isolates of Trichoderma with efficient antagonistic capacity against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) is a promising alternative strategy to pesticides for tomato wilt management. We evaluated the antagonistic activity of 30 isolates of T. asperellum against 4 different isolates of FOL. The production of extracellular cell wall degrading enzymes of the antagonistic isolates was also measured. The random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method was applied to assess the genetic variability among the T. asperellum isolates. All of the T. asperellum isolates significantly reduced the mycelial growth of FOL isolates but the amount of growth reduction varied significantly as well. There was a correlation between the antagonistic capacity of T. asperellum isolates towards FOL and their lytic enzyme production. Isolates showing high levels of chitinase and ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase activities strongly inhibited the growth of FOL isolates. RAPD analysis showed a high level of genetic variation among T. asperellum isolates. The UPGMA dendrogram revealed that T. asperellum isolates could not be grouped by their antagonistic behavior or lytic enzymes production. Six isolates of T. asperellum were highly antagonistic towards FOL and potentially could be used in commercial agriculture to control tomato wilt. Our results are consistent with the conclusion that understanding the genetic variation within Trichoderma isolates and their biochemical capabilities are required for the selection of effective indigenous fungal strains for the use as biocontrol agents.
