  • The reproductive cycle and the breeding season of the freshwater clam, Anodonta (Sinanodonta) woodiana (Lea) have been investigated by histological examination of the gonadal development under photomicroscopy. The materials were monthly collected from the Nakdong River for one year from September 1979 to August 1980. Sexuality of Anodonta (Sinanodonta) woodiana is dioecious, and the species are ovoviviparous. The gonads are irregularly arranged from the subregion of mid-intestinal gland in visceral cavity to reticular connective tissue of foot. The ovary is composed of a number of small ovarian sacs, The epithelium of ovarian sac has a function of the germinal epithelium. Oogonia actively proliferate along the germinal epithelium of the ovarian sac, in which young oocytes are growing. The testis is composed of a number of seminiferous tubules, and the epithelium of the tubule has function of germinal epithelium, along which spermatogonia actively proliferate. A great number of undifferentiated mesenchymal tissue and eosinophilic granular cells are abundantly distributed between the growing oocytes and spermatocytes in the early development stages. With the further development of the ovary and testis these tissues and cells gradually disappear. Then the undifferentiated mesenchymal tissue and granular cells are considered to be related to the growing of the oocytes and spermatocytes. The gonads had function year-round the individuals which have various developmental stages of gonads appearing all the time. Spawning continued year-round except for the period of high temperature of water, during August and September. The peak spawning seasons appeared twice a year between January and March, and between June and July in 1980. Individuals which have trochophore larvae in the marsupium of the adult appeared year-round except September 1579 and August 1980. The rate of individuals which have glochidia in the marsupium was 72.7 percent in May 1980 which was the highest brooding fate.

  • The chromosome of Anodota woodiana in the Lake Uiam was analysed as using air drying technique of spermatogonial tissue to obtain mitotic and meiotic chromosomes. The chromosome chcle did mot differ, in general, from that found in other bivalves. Chromosome of this species consisted of metacentrics and submetacentrics. The longest chromosome was 2.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the shortest was about 1.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in length.

  • Six species of freshx\water Unionidae mussels in Korea, Anodonta arcaeformis flavotincta, A. woodiana, Unio douglasiae, U. douglasiae sinuloatus, Lamprotula gottschei, Lanceolaria acorohyncha were compared in regard to the various taxonomical characteristics of ultra structures of shells and glochidia. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows;the orter demibranchs of all the females of six species have served as marsupial(gravid)pouch. However, all the foru demibranchs were used as the marsupium in some female individuals of L. gottschei. The glochidia of A. arcaeformis flavotincta, A. woodiana and L. gottschei were separated one by one with the mucous strings and U. douglasiae sinuolatus were round-subtriangular in shape, and those of L. gottschei were subelliptical in shape. Each of the glochidial shell valves of six species had a hook studded with many spines on the superior face on valve. The glochidial shell valve had two or three rows of large spines; A. arcaeformis flavotincta, A. woodiana, and L. gottschei had two rows and three rows in U. douglasiae, U. douglasiae sinuolatus, and L. acrorhyncha. The numbers of sensory hairs of A. arcaeformis flavotincta and A. woodiana were all eight, those of U. douglasiae, U. douglasiae sinuolatus and L. acrorhyncha were six. and that of L. gottschei was four. The external and internal surfaces of the glochidial shell valves of A. A. arcadformis flavotincta, A. woodiana, and L. gottschei had foveolate and psilate in U. douglaseae, U. douglasiae sinuolatus and L. acrorhyncha.

  • Mollusks were collected with Ponar grab from seven stations in lower part of Han river, Korea from June 1995 through May 1996. Basket sampler with artificial substrate was also employed to collect the adhesive mollusks. In addition to above mentioned sampling stations, Bam islet was surveyed. A total of species, Corbicula fluminea, Anodonta woodiana, Unio douglasiae, Limnoperna fortunei, corbicula fenouilliana and Physa acuta, were collected in lower part of Han river. Author reviewed the literatures on the ecological survey of molluscan fauna in Han river.

  • A 'continuous removal of organic matters (CROM) system' using a native freshwater bivalve in Korea Anodonta woordiana, was developed to determine its potential of controlling various sestons in eutrophic lake system, and to evaluate its effect on water quality improvement under consideration of sediment addition as habitat. We designed CROM experiments with four treatments: no mussels and no sediment (W, negative control), no mussels and sediment (WS, positive control), mussels and no sediment (WM), and mussels and sediment (WMS). The experiments were performed at the condition of 18${\sim}$25 L $h^{-1}$ of inflow, mussel density of 486.1 indiv. $m^{-2}$, and temperatures between 15 and $22^{\circ}C$ for 13 consecutive days. Physicochemical and biological parameters were measured at daily (10:00 am) intervals after the mussel addition. Results indicated that mussel stockings without addition of sediment effectively removed sestons (suspended solids and chlorophyll-a) at nearly same level over 80 percentage of the control during the study, while there were no differences in removal activities of sestons between with and without sediment (P>0.5). Therefore, it clearly suggests that CROM system using A. woordiana has a strong potential to control the seston in surface water of eutrophic lake.

  • This study was conducted to establish models of filtrating rate and production of feces of a native freshwater bivalve, Anodonta woodiana, on removal organic matters in eutrophic waters. Among the applied shell size (4.3~15.5 cm), the filtrating rate and production of feces of Anodonta woodiana was $0.08{\sim}0.86L\;g^{-1}\;h^{-1}$ (average $0.24L\;g^{-1}\;h^{-1}$), $0.00{\sim}11.10mg\;g^{-1}\;h^{-1}$ (average $0.94mg\;g^{-1}\;h^{-1}$), respectively. In two different water current (high $48Lh^{-1}$, low $24Lh^{-1}$), the filtrating rate of Chl-a was $0.02{\sim}0.10L\;g^{-1}\;d^{-1}$ (average $0.05L\;g^{-1}\;d^{-1}$), $0.02{\sim}0.11L\;g^{-1}\;d^{-1}$ (average $0.07L\;g^{-1}\;d^{-1}$) and the removal rate was 65.4%, 82.1%, respectively. Response surface methodology, with a central composite design comprising 3 levels and 2 variables, was used to identify the optimal removal condition of shell length, water current and filtrating rate or feces production by bivalves. The optimum removal conditions were found that had optimized $6.21L\;mussel^{-1}\;d^{-1}$ at shell length 14.3~15.6 and water current $22{\sim}30Lh^{-1}$. The optimal conditions of production of feces ($4.2mg\;g^{-1}\;d^{-1}$) by freshwater mussels were shell length 14.3~16.3 cm and water current $36{\sim}44Lh^{-1}$.

  • Heaty metals in mollusks and in sedimints collected from five stations along Mangyong river area in Jeonra Bug Do were examined during 1988 through 1989. Concentration of heavy metals in Cipangopaludina chinensis malleata and Anodonta woodiana were highly correlated with that in sediments, And concentration of heavy metals in both of millusks and sediments from industrialized area was higher than the other stations. Above results suggested that Mangyong river was polluted with heavy metals and heavy metals were accumulated in molluscan soft bodies.
