  • We prepared uniform CdS nanowire arrays ways with lengths up to 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and diameters as small as 20 nm by electrochemically depositing the semiconductor directly into the pores of anodic alumina films from an electrolyte containing $CdCl_2$ and S in dimethyl sulfoxide. The nanowire arrays were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The deposited materials are composed mainly of hexagonal CdS with (100) preferential orientation.

  • CdS nanostructure materials have been fabricated in porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template by using chemical bath deposition (CBD). These nanostructure materials had uniform diameters of about 15e200 nm, which correspond to the pore sizes of the templates used, and the length was up to 40 mm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigation demonstrates that CdS nanostructure materials were hexagonal polycrystalline in nature. As the pore diameter of AAO templates was enlarged, the preferential orientation of c-axis was improved. From PL analysis, the sulfur-deficient defects at the surfaces of CdS nanostructure materials were increasedwhen the samplewas synthesized in the template with larger pore diameter.

  • The growth of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) in anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) template and their application to a field emitter are described. AAO templates were fabricated by anodizing bulk aluminum and sputtered thin Al film on Nb-coated Si wafers. After Co catalyst had been electrochemically deposited into the bottom of the pores in AAO template, CNTs were grown by pyrolyzing $C_2H_2$. Depending on the reaction conditions, CNTs grew up to or over the top of the pores in AAO template with different structures. The morphology and structure of CNTs were observed with a scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope. The diameter of CNTs strongly depended on the size of the pores in AAO template and the growing conditions. The electron field emission measurement of the samples resulted in the turn-on field of 1.9-2.2 $V/{\mu}m$ and the field enhancement factor of 2450-5200. The observation of high field enhancement factors is explained in terms of low field screening effect.

  • Anodic aluminum oxides (AAO) fabricated by the two-step anodizing process have attracted much attention for the fabrication of nano template because of pore structure with high aspect ratio, low cost process and ease of fabrication. AAOs are characterized by a homogeneous morphology of parallel pores that grow perpendicular to the template surface with a narrow distribution of diameter, length and inter-pores spacing, all of which can be easily controlled by suitably choosing of the anodizing parameters such as pH of the electrolyte, anodizing voltage and duration of anodizing. In this study, AAO templates were characterized by X-ray diffraction and field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The dependence of the pore size change according to the amount of addition of phosphoric acid, which was used to remove the initial alumina oxide layer, was not observed.

  • Nanoporous AAO (Anodic Aluminum Oxide) membranes have many advantages as a template for variety of magnetic materials. Materials can be embedded into the pores by electrodeposition, sputtering or magnetic-field-assisted infiltration of magnetic nanoparticles. This work focuses on the fabrication of the magnetic structures in the AAO templates by electrodeposition. Our method allows the controlled growth of Co nanostructures within the porous alumina membrane in the form of dots, rods and long wires. The shape of Co nanostructures has been investigated by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The magnetic hysteresis loops of Co nanostructures were measured using SQUID at 5 K and 300 K. The magnetic properties of the Co nanostructures are proportional to their aspect ratios and can be controlled by changing the aspect ratios.

  • Anodic alumina with self-organized and ordered nano hole arrays can be a good candidate of an irradiation mask to modify the properties of nano-scale region. In order to try using porous anodic alumina as a mask for ion-beam patterning, ion beam transmittance of anodic alumina was tested. 4 Um thick self-standing AAO templates anodized from Al bulk foil with two different aspect ratio, 200:1 and 100:1, were aligned about incident ion beam with finely controllable goniometer. At the best alignment, the transmittance of the AAO with aspect ratio of 200:1 and 100:1 were $10^{-8}\;and\;10^{-4}$, respectively. However transmittance of the thin film AAO with low aspect ratio, 5:1, were remarkably improved to 0.67. The ion beam transmittance of self-standing porous alumina with a thickness larger than $4{\mu}m$ is extremely low owing to high aspect ratio of nano hole and charging effect, even at a precise beam alignment to the direction of nano hole. $SiO_2$ nano dot array was formed by ion irradiation into thin film AAO on $SiO_2$ film. This was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy that the $SiO_2$ nano dot array is similar to AAO hole array.

  • Magnetic hysteresis in Ni nanowire arrays grown by electrodeposition inside the pores of anodic alumina templates is studied as a function of temperature in the range between 5 K and 300 K. Nanowires with different diameters, aspect ratios, inter-wire distance in the array and surface condition (smooth and rough) are synthesized. These microstructure parameters are linked to the different free magnetic energy contributions determining coercivity and the controlling magnetization reversal mechanisms. Coercivity increases with temperature in arrays of nanowires with rough surfaces and small diameters -33 nm and 65 nm- when measured without removing the alumina template and/or the Al substrate. For thicker wires -200 nm in diameter and relatively smooth surfaces- measured without the Al substrate, coercivity decreases as temperature rises. These temperature dependences of magnetic hysteresis are described in terms of an effective magnetic anisotropy $K_a$, resulting from the interplay of magnetocrystalline, magnetoelastic and shape anisotropies, together with the magnetostatic interaction energy density between nanowires in the array. The experimentally determined coercive fields are compared with results of micromagnetic calculations, performed considering the magnetization reversal mode acting in each studied array and microstructure parameters. A method is proposed to roughly estimate the value of $K_a$ experimentally, from the hysteresis loops measured at different temperatures. These measured values are in agreement with theoretical calculations. The observed temperature dependence of coercivity does not arise from an intrinsic property of pure Ni but from the nanowires surface roughness and the way the array is measured, with or without the alumina template and/or the aluminum support.
