This study was performed to investigate the surface properties and in vitro biocompatibility of electrochemically oxidized Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy by anodic spark discharge technique. Discs of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy of 20 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness were polished sequentially from #300 to 1000 SiC paper, ultrasonically washed with acetone and distilled water for 5 min, and dried in an oven at $50^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Anodizing was performed using a regulated DC power supply. The applied voltages were given at 240, 280, 320, and 360 V and current density of $30mA/cm^2$. Hydrothermal treatment was conducted by high pressure steam at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours using a autoclave. Samples were soaked in the Hanks' solution with pH 7.4 at $36.5^{\circ}C$ during 30 days. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The oxide films were porous with pore size of $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$. The size of micropores increased with increasing the spark forming voltage. 2. The main crystal structure of the anodic oxide film was anatase type as analyzed with thin-film X-ray diffractometery. 3. Needle-like hydroxyapatie (HA) crystals were observed on anodic oxide films after hydrothermal treatment at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The precipitation of HA crystals was accelerated with increasing the spark forming voltage. 4. The precipitation of the fine asperity-like HA crystals were observed after being immersed in Hanks' solution at $37^{\circ}C$. The precipitation of HA crystals was accelerated with increasing the spark forming voltage and the time of immersion in Hanks' solution. 5. The Ca/P ration of the precipitated HA layer was equivalent to that of HA crystal as increasing the spark forming voltage and the time of immersion in Hanks' solution.
An alumina membrane with nano-sized pores was fabricated by anodic oxidation. The shape and structure of the pore on alumina membrane were changed according to the roughness of aluminum surface. The shape and structure of the nano-sized pre were investigated according to purity of aluminum substrate for the anodization process. The aluminum substrates with 99.5% and 99.999% purities were used. The aluminum substrate(99.5%) was anodized after the processes of pressing, mechanical polishing, chemical polishing, and electrochemical polishing. The nano-sized pores with the pore size of 50 - 100nm, the cell size of 20-50nm and the thickness of $10{\mu}m{\sim}45{\mu}m$ were obtained. Even though the electrochemical polishing was used for the aluminum substrate (99.999%), the same characteristics as the aluminum substrate (99.5%) was obtained. The alumina membrane prepared by anodization for 5 min using fixed voltage method shows the pore with irregular shape. The pore shape was changed to regular shape after pore widening process.
The co-firing processes for the supported type planar solid oxide fuel cell were investigated. A flat cell of $7.7${\times}$10.8\textrm{cm}^2$ was fabricated successfully by the co-firing process, in which green films were co-sintered in the forms of two layers of anode/electrolyte or of three layers of anode/electrolyte/cathode with gas distributor. A co-fired cell of two layers yielded a power of 200 ㎽/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 608 ㎷. Its performance loss was mainly due to iR drop in the anodic gas distributor, which was attributed to poor contact between anodic gas distributor and current collector. The performance in the co-fired cell of three layers was much lower than that of two layers, which resulted from the large iR drop and activation overvoltage at the cathodic side. In the co-fired cell of two layers, the impedance analysis indicated that the performance decay during cell operation is due to both anode overvoltage and iR drop at anode side. Also the electrode reaction of the co-fired two layers' cell is considered to be controlled by activation overvoltage within the low current of 50 ㎃.

The corrosion of pure titanium (CP- Ti Grade 2) and titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V ELI) were studied under various conditions of simulated body fluids. The static immersion test and the electrochemical test were performed in accordance with ISO 10271 : 2001. For the electrochemical test, the open circuit potential was monitored as a function of time, and the cyclic polarization curve was recorded. The corrosion resistance was evaluated from the values of corrosion potential, passivation current density, breakdown potential, and the shape of hysteresis etc. The effects of alloy type, surface condition, temperature, oxygen, and constituents in the fluids such as acid, chloride were estimated. Both specimens had extremely low dissolution rate in the static immersion test. They showed strong passivation characteristics in the electrochemical test. They maintained negligible current density throughout the wide anodic potential range. The passive layer was not broken up to 2.0 V (vs. SCE). The hysteresis and the shift of passivation potential toward the anodic direction was observed during the reversed scan. The passivation process appeared to be accelerated by oxygen in air or that dissolved in the fluids. The passivation also proceeded without oxygen by the reaction of constituents in the fluids. Acid or chloride in the fluids, specially later weakened the passive layer, and then induced higher passivation current density and less shift of passivation potential in the reversed scan. CP-Ti Grade 2 was more reactive than Ti6Al4V ELI in the fluids containing acid or chloride, but thicker layer produced on its surface provided higher corrosion resistance.

The cryogenic fracture behaviors of austenitic stainless steel HN2 developed for nuclear fusion reactor were evaluated quantitatively by using the small punch(SP) test. The electrochemical polarization test was applied to study thermal aging degradation of HN2 steel. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis was conducted to detect carbides and nitrides precipitated on the grain boundary of the heat treated HN2 steel. The mechanical properties of the HN2 steel significantly decreased with increasing time and temperature of heat treatment or with decreasing testing temperature. The integrated charge(Q) obtained from electrochemical polarization test showed a good correlation with the SP energy(ESP) obtained by means of SP tests. From the results observed in the x-ray diffraction and anodic polarization curve, it was known that the material the grain boundary. Combining SP test and electrochemical polarization test, it could be useful tools to non-destructively evaluate the cryogenic fracture behaviors and the aging degradation for cryogenic structural material.
Al-brass is the raw material of mnufacturing tubes for heat exchanger of vessel where seawater is used to coolant because it has high level of heat coductivity and excellent mechanical properties and high level of corrosion resistance due to cuprous oxide($Cu_2O$) layer against seawater. However, damage of Al-brass tubes for heat exchanger of vessel is reported that local corrosion such as stress corrosion cracking occurred by synergism effect between mechanical factor and corrosion environment. In this study, to investigate on the effect of stress on the polarization characteristics of Al-brass. At the stress of 0% and 95% yield strength by constant displacement tester, in 3.5% NaCl + 0.1% $NH_4OH$ solution, the polarization tests were carried out. And thus open circuit potential, corrosion current density, anodic polarization, cyclic polarization and dezincification behavior of Al-brass are investigated.
The objective of this work was to develop efficient synergistic inhibitor combinations comprising sodium nitrite ($NaNO_2$) and an inhibitor-blend code named (SN-50), keeping in view of their application in industrial cooling water systems. The electrochemical characteristics of the carbon steel working electrode in simulated cooling water (SCW), without and with the addition of different combinations of the inhibitors, were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), open circuit potential (OCP). The electrode surface changes were followed by visual characterization methods. It was demonstrated in this study that all the combinations of the inhibitors exhibited synergistic benefit and higher inhibition efficiencies than did either of the individual inhibitors. The addition of SN-50 inhibitor to the SCW shifted the OCP to more anodic values and increased the polarization resistance ($R_p$) values of carbon steel at all applied concentrations. The higher the applied sodium nitrite concentration (in the protection concentration range), the higher the obtained $R_p$ values and the inhibition efficiency improved by increasing the inhibitor concentration.

Au/oxide/n-InP Schottky diodes were fabricated from heteroepitaxial InP layers grown on GaAs substrates by the metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) method from a new combination of source materials: ethyldimethylindium (EDMIn) and tertiarybutylphosphine (TBP). Anodic oxidation technique by using a solution of 10 g of ammonium pentaborate in 100 cc of ethylene glycole as the electrolyte was used to deposit a thin oxide layer. The barrier heights determined from three different techniques, current-voltage (I-V) measurements at room temperature and in the temperature range of 273 K - 373 K, and room temperature capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements are in good agreement, 0.7 - 0.9 eV which is considerably high as compared to the 0.45 - 0.55 eV in Au/n-InP Schottky diode without a Passivation layer. The ideality factors of 1.1 - 1.3 of the Schottky diodes were also determined from the I-Y characteristics. Deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) studies revealed only one shallow electron state at 92.6 meV below the bottom of the conduction band and no deep state in the heteroepitaxial InP layers grown from EDMIn and TBP.
Electrochemical adsorption always was accompanied with solvent displacement and relative size factor(x) of adsorbate and solvent and hydrogen coverage(${\theta}$) on the lead anodic film electrode formed in phosphoric acid in NaCl solution and the sea water at $15{\sim}35^{\circ}C$ were studied by means of constant current-potential method and potentiodynamic cathodic polarization method. In this experiment, various constants and thermodynamic quantities calculated from the hydrogen coverage were also described to explain the reactivities of di-iso-butylnitrosoamine(DBNA) and proton ($H^+$) according to the changes of interactions between solute and solvent in the bulk phase and interphase. It was investigated that the average values of relative size factor and the coverage of hydrogen atoms studied with the electrode of lead anodic film formed in phosphoric acid solution in 60mM DBNA+0.5M NaCl and in 60mM DBNA+$6\%0$ sea water were about 11.0 and 0.2 respectively. Hydrogen evolution was electrochemical mechanism because of substitutional adsorption of aromatic substance with their delocalization of electrons, but in the case of non-charge transfer adsorption of aliphatic substance(DBNA) interacting relatively little with the electrode, it was combination mechanism.
The interactions between corrosion pits on stainless steel under loading conditions are studied by using a cellular automata model coupled with finite element method at a mesoscopic scale. The cellular automata model focuses on a metal/film/electrolyte system, including anodic dissolution, passivation, diffusion of hydrogen ions and salt film hydrolysis. The Chopard block algorithm is used to improve the diffusion simulation efficiency. The finite element method is used to calculate the stress concentration on the pit surface during pit growth, and the effect of local stress and strain on anodic current is obtained by using the Gutman model, which is used as the boundary conditions of the cellular automata model. The transient current characteristics of the interactions between corrosion pits under different simulation factors including the breakdown of the passive film at the pit mouth and the diffusion of hydrogen ions are analyzed. The analysis of the pit stability product shows that the simulation results are close to the experimental conclusions.
