Economic Evaluation of the HAM300 Yarding Operation with Tree-Length Harvesting Method in Larix kaempferi Forest Stands (낙엽송 전간수확작업에서 HAM300을 이용한 집재작업의 작업일수 및 작업량을 고려한 경제성 분석)

  • Two strategies for calculating economic feasibility are the machine rate and cash-flow methods. This study used the cash-flow method to evaluate the economic feasibility of the HAM300 yarding operation for extracting tree length logs in Larix kaempferi forest stands. In financial analysis based on 7-year cash-flow, the net present value and pay-back period method were used. We analyzed two scenarios: operating opportunities (50, 100, 150, and 200 days per year) and productivity change yield (7.5 and 10.5 ㎥/scheduled machine hour: SMH). The analysis indicated that high rates of return on extraction activity investment can be achieved when machines are used for >150 days per year. In addition, improved productivity (10.5 ㎥/SMH) increased financial feasibility compared to current productivity (7.5 ㎥/SMH) when machines were operated for 100 days per year. These results suggest that the appropriateness of HAM300 harvesting depends on the number of annual operating days and productivity.

A Study of Establishing the Rationable Theme Park Farm Model of Rural Tourism (테마관광농원의 합리적인 경영모형설정 연구)

  • As theme park farms, which attract noticeably low interest from the government have gained their own managerial skills for a long time, we can now and many successful cases, This study showed there were four types of tourism villages; those that were experienced in the harvesting and sale of agricultural products, farm sleeping, recreational and leisure, and food. 1 also suggested the successful management model according to each type. The results show the recreational and leisure type had the highest annual income out of all four groups. The total income of recreational and leisure type villages were 260,000 thousand won which is more when compared to 110,000 thousand won for sleeping, 60,000 thousand won (or food, and 40,000 thousand won for harvesting agricultural products. The ratios of capital productivity (net income/invest) were 12.4 for recreation and leisure, 7.7 for food, 6.9 for farm stay, and 2.89 for harvesting. 1 suggest that farm managers should be satisfied with farm management and the priority of improving farm management should focus on the development of specific products within each farm.

Status of J stock minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata)

  • The status of J stock minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) was assessed using potential biological removal (PBR) and mortality data. Using the estimated abundance of minke whales in this area (6260; CV = 0.212), the minimum population estimate of the stock was estimated as 5247. The PBR for J stock minke whales was calculated as 52.5 individuals using the minimum population estimate (5247), one-half of the maximum theoretical net productivity rate (0.02) and the recovery factor (0.5). The estimated mean annual level of anthropogenic mortality was 270.4 individuals. Thus, the status of this stock was considered as strategic. However, fortunately, the abundance of this population in the East Sea from 2000 to 2008 showed an increasing trend (rate of increase 0.0488; annual rate of increase 5.0%) although it is not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The primary sources of anthropogenic mortality were bycatch (set nets, pots and gill nets) and illegal catch. Because of the status of this population, it is urgently necessary to reduce the amount of bycatch and illegal catch of minke whales. Further study needs to use population health and viability analysis for investigating the long-term survival of this population more clearly.

  • In order to explore vegetation adaptation to climate variability and the impacts on water balance dynamics, the inter-regional and the inter-annual variability of both water availability and vegetation productivity are investigated. The Horton index, which is the ratio between actual evapotranspiration and catchment wetting as a measure of vegetation water use at catchment-scale, is revisited to quantify the effects of growing-season water availability on hydrologic partitioning at catchment scale. It is shown that the estimated Horton index is relatively constant irrespective of inter-annual climate variability. In addition, the Horton index is compared with catchment-scale vegetation rain use efficiency. The results show that there is an interesting pattern in the response of vegetation water use to water availability. When water becomes the limiting factor for vegetation productivity, the catchment-scale vegetation rain use efficiency converges to a common maximum value in agreement with earlier findings at the ecosystem level.

  • A comparison betwen the productivity of Pinus rigida which is native in the Eastern United States, and P. rigitaeda which is F1 hybrid between P. rigida and P. taeda, has been established. For each tree the diameter at breast height (D) and the height of tree (H) were measured in three years. The standard sample trees were down and then weighed each organ. From obtained data the allometric relation between $D_2H$ and dry weight of the trunk (Ws), the branches (Wb) and the leaves (Wl) of P. rigida were approxmated by $$Ws=0.0592 (D^2H)^{0.837}$$ $$Wb=0.0065 (D^2H)^{0.989}$$ $$Wl=0.0447(D^2H)^{0.690}$$ and those of P. rigitaeda were approximated by $$Ws=0.0522 (D^2H)^{0.843}$$ $$Wb=0.0037 (D^2H)^{1.117}$$ $$Wl=0.0207 (D^2H)^{0.856}$$ From the above, the standing crops of above ground of P. rigida were estimated to be as much as 16.93-34.35 ton dry matter per ha, and those of P. rigitaeda were 20.45-45.55 ton per ha. Annual net production was appraised at 8.07-9.35 ton/ha.yr in P. rigida and at 11.59-13.41 ton/ha.yr in P. rigitaeda (1.0:1.4). It is assumed that high productivity of P. rigitaeda stand compared with P. rigida resulted from an increase of the leaf amount with age. Photosynthetic ability under the saturated light of the current and theold leaves of P. rigida were respectively 2.62 and 0.66mg CO2/g. d. wt..hr and those of P. rigitaeda were 1.17 and 0.96mg CO2/g.d. wt.hr. Respiration of the current and the old leaves at $25^{\circ}C$ were 1.00 and 0.90 mg CO2/g. d. wt..hr. in P. rigida and 0.90 and 0.45mg CO2/g.d.wt.hr in P. rigitaeda. It is assumed that photosynthetic longevity of P. rigitaeda leaves was vigorously maintained longer than that of P. rigida.

Community Structure, Productivity, and Nutrient Uptake of the Vascular Plants in the Wetlands of the Asan-Lake (아산호 습지에서 관속식물의 군집 구조와 생산성 및 영양염류의 흡수)

  • The flora, distribution area, vegetation structure, annual net primary production, and nutrient uptake of the vascular hydrophytes, hygrophytes and mesophytes were investigated in the wetlands of the Asan-Lake, Chungchongnam-do and Kyonggi-do, Korea from March to October in 1997 to reveal the correlation between the plant community and the lake environment. The flora was composed of 38 families, 89 genera, 106 species, 14 varieties or total 120 kinds of the vascular plants. The life from of the hydrophytes were classified as 14 kinds of emergent plants, 5 kinds of submerged plants, and 4 kinds of free-floating plants, respectively. The number of species was various to 4 ∼85 kinds in each site. The dominant species was Zizania latifolia, and the importance values of Zizania latifolia, Typha orientalis, Phragmites communis, and Spirodela polyrhiza were 39.58, 14.90, 13.97, and 7.64, respectively. The distribution area of the emergent hydrophytes, hygrophytes, and mesophytes was 49.3 ㏊ (90.5%), and free-floating plants was 5.2 ㏊ (9.5%), whereas the floating-leaved and submersed plants were rare. Annual net production of the emergent hydrophytes, hygrophytes, and mesophytes was 547.9 ton D.W./yr (98%), and those of the free-floating plants was 10.5 ton D.W./yr (2%), and 558.4 ton D.W./yr in the whole lake ecosystem. The total uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus by the vascular plants was 7,099 and 1,891 ㎏/yr in the whole lake ecosystem.

Comparative Analysis on Efficiency and Productivity for Korea, Japan and Global Parcel Delivery Companies (한국, 일본, 글로벌 택배기업의 효율성 및 생산성 비교 분석)

  • Purpose - The parcel delivery service(courier) industry all over the world has been expanding its market so far, but its growth has been declining in recent years. In this situation, most parcel delivery companies are having trouble with managing themselves because of the pressure from the customer to increase service level and decrease the rate. The purpose of this study is to provide ways to improve competitive advantages of the parcel delivery service industry by evaluating the multi-period operating efficiency of Korea, Japan and global service providers. Research design, data, and methodology - The data for the period of 2011 to 2014 were collected from the annual reports published by parcel delivery companies. In this study, we analyze the marketability (revenue), profitability (operating profits), and management conditions (net profits) of parcel service companies by combining information on human resources (number of employees) and material resources (total assets and equity). Therefore, the number of employees, total assets, and equity are selected as input variables, and revenue, operating profits, and net profits as the output variables. In this study, DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) is used to measure the comparative efficiency and MPI (Malmquist Productivity Index) is used to analyze the trend of change of the efficiency for a multi-year period. Results - The operational efficiency scores of medium-sized parcel delivery companies in Korea are higher than other larger competitors such as Korean, Japan and Global larger companies. As of 2014, Logen(1.878) was found to be the most efficient parcel delivery enterprise, followed by KGB (1.224), and Kyoungdong(1.002). Otherwise, Hanjin(0.235), CJ(0.262), Hyundai Logistics(0.657), DHL(0.611), UPS(0.766), FedEx(0.498), TNT(0.350), Yamato(0.762) and Sagawa(0.520), larger sized companies, were done inefficiently. The productivity of parcel delivery companies is influenced by endogenous factors as well as exogenous ones such as changes in business environment and technological advances. Conclusions - Korean medium-sized companies have relatively high efficiency scores in operation. That is why they still survive the competitive market in Korea where market restructuring on the industry has been expected to be conducted for many years. The reason why medium-sized couriers had higher efficient scores than larger couriers is that most of couriers spend more operating expenses versus unit price of delivery which is the amount of money that is needed in order to send a package by parcel service. So the delivery unit price must be taken into account by all the expenses associated with the cost of fuel, labor and maintenance expenses for facilities, etc. therefore, the unit price must be increased to strengthen business competitive power. In order for the industry to have more competitive advantage, the companies need to make profits by increasing demand volume and raising the delivery rate to provide high-quality delivery service to customers. And both endogenous and exogenous change must take precedence in order to strengthen their competitiveness.

Studies on the Productive Structure and the Productivity of × Populus albaglandulosa Plantation (은수원사시나무의 조림지(造林地)의 생산구조(生産構造)와 생산성(生産性))

  • The productive structure and the productivity of ${\times}$Populus albaglandulosa plantations, where are middle parts of the Korean peninsula, were studied by means of stratifying clip technique and of allometry. The densities of stands in the sample areas were 693 trees/ha in 6 year-old plantation and 527 or 625 trees/ha in 9 year-old one. The photosynthetic part of the productive structure was not shown normal conical form but layering. So this was efficient to transmit solar radiation into the stand floor. The standing crop of the terrestrial parts of 6 year-old plantation was 18.11 ton/ha and that of 9 year-old one 38.8 to 47.3 ton/ha. The wood volume to trunk to 6 year-old was $31.3m^3/ha$ and that of 9 year-old was 68.8 to $83.9m^3/ha$. The annual net production of 6 year-old plantation was 4.8 ton/ha/year and that of 9 year-old one was 10.0 to 11.7 ton/ha/year and its wood volume of trunks was 17.9 to $21.1m^3/ha/year$. In the 9 year-old plantation the standing crop or the annual net production was different between two sample areas. This seemed that the cause was not due to chemical character but to physical character of soil.

Productive Structure and Net Production of a Larix leptolepis Planatation (낙엽송 인공 조림 임분의 생산구조와 생산성)

  • This study was to investigate the productivity of 24-year-old Larix leptolepis plantation in the Experimental Forest of Chungbuk National University located in Mt. Worak, Chungchungbuk-do, Korea. Eight plots(l0m x l0m) were established in the larch plantation in the 9th compartment. Eight sample trees were selected and cut off. Stem, branches and leaves were weighed respectively with the stratified clipping method, and analyzed for productive structure. The allometric regression equations between dry weight of each component(stem, branches. and needles) and D$^2$H were obtained. The results obtained are summarized as follows; (1) Photosynthetic layer of Larix leptolepis was shown at about 13m in height, and maximum needle amount of crown at 15-l6m in height. (2) The total biomass of aboveground was 186.25tons/ha(86.3% from stem, 9.9% from branches and 3.8% from needles). (3) Annual net production of aboveground was 12.17tons/ ha/yr, and the ratios of stem, branches and needles to that of aboveground, 0.835, 0.12, and 0.045, respectively.

Productive Structure and Net Production of Quercus mongolica forest in Mt. Taehwa (Kwangju, Kyonggi-do) (경기도 광주시 태화산 신갈나무림의 생산구조와 생산성)

  • This study was to investigate the productivity of 30-year-old Quercus mongolica forest in the Experimental Forest of Seoul National University located in Mt. Taehwa, Kyonggi-do, Korea. Eight sample trees were selected and cut off. Stem, branches and leaves were weighed respectively with the stratified clipping method, and analyzed for productive struts lure. The allometric regression equations between dry weight of each component(stem, branches, and needles) and D$^2$H were obtained. The results obtained are summarized as follows; (1) Photosynthetic layer of Quercus mongolica was shown at about 4m in height, and maximum needle amount of crown at 10m in height. (2) The total biomass of aboveground was 67.886ton/ha(75.5% from stem, 19.4% from branches and 5.1% from needles). (3) Annual net production of aboveground was 12.76ton/ha/yr, and the ratios of stem, branches and needles to that of aboveground, 44.1%, 28.7% and 27.2%, respectively.
