  • Tributary is a part of life space for people and a very important place that accommodates rest recreation and other daily activities. absolutely insufficient basic data about water quality and flow rate are available for basin management. Efficient water and basin management systems, which are also supported by local residents can be established by securing such basic data of major tributaries in the Nakdong river system. In this study, the fluctuation characteristics of upstream and downstream water pollution levels were compared using the measurement results of the water environment measurement network and the tributary monitoring project for the gyeseong-stream and Hwapo-stream in the Nakdong-miryang watershed. In 2017, when water pollution is the highest, it was confirmed that the annual average rainfall was the lowest. Although the upstream and downstream water quality tendencies of the Gyeseong-stream are similar, the water quality concentrations of the Gyeseong-stream are relatively different. But although the Hwapo stream has various causes of pollution, there was not much difference in the level of pollution between the upper and lower streams. In addition, both rivers need the ability to purify rivers by securing sufficient water for river maintenance, and if the correlation between water quality items can be inferred through continuous monitoring of tributaries where the aspect of water quality change is unclear, water quality management Determined to be efficient operation.

  • This study was conducted to present primary data on the change of the physical characteristics of reservoir sediments for understanding the sedimentation. The records of the annual summation of the precipitation of >50mm per day (AP50) were compared with changes of bulk density, organic matter, mean grain-size, and sand ratio in sediment cores sampled from three reservoirs without dredging record. Reservoir sediments, characterized by mineral soil, contained organic matters originated from the debris of terrestrial plants, and changes of organic matter were related to changes of grain-size flowing into reservoirs when sediments of fine sandy loam showed 10% of organic matter contents. Rapid changes of grain-size and sand ratio in the sediment cores were associated with the increase and decrease of precipitation, and fluctuation of water level and water flow in reservoirs might have influenced on the formation of sediments in reservoirs. Records of AP50 suggested that sediments could accumulate more than about 30 within the short period of 10 years. The accumulated sediments in a short time can reflect the effect of natural and anthropogenic events on the physical characteristics of sediments.

  • In order to estimate the ecological parameters of the population, short-necked clams, Ruditapes philippinarum, were collected from Jindu coast at Hansan Island, from April to December in 2005. The growth of the clam was estimated by von Bertalanffy growth model and each parameters were obtained from a nonlinear regression as $L_{\infty}\;=\;48.8\;mm$, k = 0.28 and $t_0\;=\;-0.88\;(R^2\;=\;0.994)$. Instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) and fishing mortality (F) was calculated to be 0.8614/yr. and 0.6122/yr, respectively. The age at the first capture was estimated to be 2.88 year. Using the present parameter for clam fishing, the yield-per recruit (Y/R) was estimated to be 3.44g. Although the maximum Y/R was obtained under the parameters ($t_c\;=\;3.48\;yr$. and F = 0.9295/yr), it is favorable to maintain the current fishing effort considering the annual fluctuation of the parameters.

  • The structure of the south Korean coastal front, their fluctuation, the properties and the probable effects of the front on the mackerel fishery are discussed based on the data of 26 cruises in 1967-1969 in the southern waters of Korea. In the south Korean coastal water the annual variations of the properties shows the greatest magnitude among the other water masses in the north of East China Sea. The salinity profile provides a fairly accurate description of the interface between the two kinds of water and agree with the temperature structure in winter. The temperature front does not always coincide with the salinity front in summer, while the former corresponds to the later in winter. The sharpest and most stable front between the Tsushima Warm Current and the south Koren coastal water was found in autumn and winter. In autumn 1969, the most successful catches of mackerel was recorded in the south Korean front of great borizontal gradients of properties(temperature 5.0$^{\circ}C$/10miles, salinity 1.2 /10miles) in the east of Cheju Is. If future investigation finds the peculiar oceanographical conditions like that shown in summer, 1969, the conditions of frontal layer in coming autumn will be estimated and finally the success of the mackerel fishery will be predictable from preseason information on temperature and salinity structure in the southern waters of Korea.

  • In this study, we have investigated monthly changes in temperature extremes in South Korea for the past (1921~2010) and the future (2011~2100). We used seven stations' (Gangneung, Seoul, Incheon, Daegu, Jeonju, Busan, Mokpo) data from KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) for the past. For the future we used the closest grid point values to observations from the RCP8.5 scenario of 1 km resolution. The Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI)'s climate extreme indices were employed to quantify the characteristics of temperature extremes change. Temperature extreme indices in summer have increased while those in winter have decreased in the past. The extreme indices are expected to change more rapidly in the future than in the past. The number of frost days (FD) is projected to decrease in the future, and the occurrence period will be shortened by two months at the end of the $21^{st}$ century (2071~2100) compared to the present (1981~2010). The number of hot days (HD) is projected to increase in the future, and the occurrence period is projected to lengthen by two months at the end of the $21^{st}$ century compared to the present. The annual highest temperature and its fluctuation is expected to increase. Accordingly, the heat damage is also expected to increase. The result of this study can be used as an information on damage prevention measures due to temperature extreme events.

  • Due to the frequent emergence of global abnormal climates, related studies on meteorological change is being actively proceed. However, the research on trend analysis using weather data accumulated over a long period of time was insufficient. In this study, the trend of temperature time series data accumulated from automated surface observing system (ASOS) for 40 years was analyzed by using a non-parametric analysis method. As a result of the Mann-Kendall test on the annual average temperature and seasonal average temperature time series data in South Korea, it has shown that an upward trend exists. In addition, the result of calculating the Sen's slope, which can determine the degree of tendency before and after the searched change point by applying the Pettitt test, recent data after the fluctuation point confirmed that the tendency of temperature rise was even greater.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the reproductive characteristics of the Neon damselfish Pomacentrus coelestis in Chuuk lagoon (7°27' N, 151°53' E), Micronesia, Equatorial Pacific Ocean. The specimens used in this study were collected from August 2009 to September 2010 from around the coral reef area at a depth of 3-10 m in the northwest coast of Weno Island. Overall, 228 individuals were collected over 14 months from this area, of which 115 were females and 108 were males. Among 108 males, 30 were found to be hermaphrodites and the sex of 5 individuals could not be determined. The overall sex ratio was approximately 1.06:1 (female:male), and the ratio of sexually active individuals was 0.79:1. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) fluctuated and showed the highest value of 8.43±1.21 in December 2009 and the lowest value of 3.36±0.71 in September 2009 in sexually active females. Males showed the highest GSI value of 2.64±0.93 in June 2010 and the lowest value of 0.35±0.06 in July 2010. Based on the fluctuation of GSI, the trends in the appearance of monthly sexually active individuals, and biopsy of the gonads, P. coelestis was found to be a hermaphrodite species of protogynous type and is considered to be reproductively active throughout the year.

  • The agricultural sector is completely different from other sectors since it completely relies on various natural and climatic factors. Climate changes have many effects, including lack of annual rainfall and pests, heat waves, changes in sea level, and global ozone/atmospheric CO2 fluctuation, on land and agriculture in similar ways. Climate change also affects the environment. Based on these factors, farmers chose their crops to increase productivity in their fields. Many existing agricultural ontologies are either domain-specific or have been created with minimal vocabulary and no proper evaluation framework has been implemented. A new agricultural ontology focused on subdomains is designed to assist farmers using Jaccard relative extractor (JRE) and Naïve Bayes algorithm. The JRE is used to find the similarity between two sentences and words in the agricultural documents and the relationship between two terms is identified via the Naïve Bayes algorithm. In the proposed method, the preprocessing of data is carried out through natural language processing techniques and the tags whose dimensions are reduced are subjected to rule-based formal concept analysis and mapping. The subdomain ontologies of weather, pest, and soil are built separately, and the overall agricultural ontology are built around them. The gold standard for the lexical layer is used to evaluate the proposed technique, and its performance is analyzed by comparing it with different state-of-the-art systems. Precision, recall, F-measure, Matthews correlation coefficient, receiver operating characteristic curve area, and precision-recall curve area are the performance metrics used to analyze the performance. The proposed methodology gives a precision score of 94.40% when compared with the decision tree(83.94%) and K-nearest neighbor algorithm(86.89%) for agricultural ontology construction.

  • In the coastal areas of Jeju Island, composed of volcanic rocks, saltwater intrusion occurs due to excessive pumping and geological characteristics. Groundwater level and electrical conductivity (EC) in multi-depth monitoring wells in coastal areas were characterized from 2005 to 2019. During the period of the lowest monthly precipitation, from November 2017 until February 2018, groundwater level decreased by 0.32-0.91 m. During the period of the highest monthly precipitation, from September 2019 until October 2019, groundwater level increased by 0.46-2.95 m. Groundwater level fluctuation between the dry and wet seasons ranged from 0.79 to 3.73 m (average 1.82 m) in the eastern area, from 0.47 to 6.57 m (average 2.55 m) in the western area, from 0.77 to 8.59 m (average 3.53 m) in the southern area, and from 1.06 to 12.36 m (average 5.92 m) in the northern area. In 2013, when the area experienced decreased annual precipitation, at some monitoring wells in the western area, the groundwater level decreased due to excessive groundwater pumping and saltwater intrusion. Based on EC values of 10,000 ㎲/cm or more, saltwater intrusion from the coastline was 10.2 km in the eastern area, 4.1 km in the western area, 5.8 km in the southern area, and 5.7 km in the northern area. Autocorrelation analysis of groundwater level revealed that the arithmetic mean of delay time was 0.43 months in the eastern area, 0.87 months in the northern area, 10.93 months in the southern area, and 17.02 months in the western area. Although a few monitoring wells were strongly influenced by nearby pumping wells, the cross-correlation function of the groundwater level was the highest with precipitation in most wells. The seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average model indicated that the groundwater level will decrease in most wells in the western area and decrease or increase in different wells in the eastern area.

  • This study was objected to show the complexity of groundwater flow system in a site-scale area as a design parameter of the groundwater monitoring network for early detection of pollutant leakage from a potential source of groundwater contamination (e.g., storage tank). Around the tanks, three monitoring wells were installed at about 22~25 m deep and groundwater level and temperature had been monitored for 22 months by 2-minute interval, and then compared with precipitation and temperature data from nearby weather station. Annual variation of groundwater level and its response to precipitation event, variation of groundwater temperature and delayed response to that of atmospheric temperature indicate the complexity of groundwater flow and flow paths even in the relatively small area. Thus, groundwater monitoring network for early detection of contaminant leakage should be designed with full consideration of the complexity of groundwater flow system, identified from the detailed hydrogeological investigation of the site.
