King Heonjong was the twenty-fourth King of the Joseon Dynasty. He took the throne when he was only 8 years old, and had to go through power politics of maternal relations. During his period, situations worsened in both domestic and foreign affairs, meaning the beginning fall of the Joseon Dynasty. In respect to the diseases and treatments of King Heonjong, there appeared very few articles compared with the previous Kings, in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the Journal of Royal Secretariat, and the Diary of Kings of the Joseon Dynasty. He caught small pox and recovered in 10 days at the age of 17. Some articles showed that he suffered from symptom of indigestion, dyspepsia and edema. He died at 23 and had no descendants. We assume that the cause of death was due to worsening of kidney failure.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze the frequency and contents of each 'Yangseng(養生)' category appeared in 『The Annals of Joseon Dynasty』, based on the Yangseng-related terms used in the records. Method : We selected 11 terms with the same meaning as 'Yangseng(養生)' and searched each of them on the website of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty online search service. Among the total of 679 records, 343 were classified into five categories: 'Mind Yangseng(精神養生)', 'Food Yangseng(飮食養生)', 'Doin-angyo(導引按蹻)', 'Lifestyle Yangseng(生活養生)', and 'Herb Yangseng(藥草養生)'. The contents and characteristics of each Yangseng category appeared in the 『The Annals of Joseon Dynasty』 were studied. Results : The term 'Jo-seop(調攝)' was most frequently used in the same meaning as Yangseng(養生), followed by 'Jo-ri(調理)', 'Jo-ho(調護)', 'Jo-yang(調養)', and 'Seop-yang(攝養)'. The frequency of records categorized into specific Yangseng methods(養生法) was in the order of 'Lifestyle Yangseng', 'Mind Yangseng', 'Food Yangseng', 'Herb Yangseng' and 'Doin-angyo(導引按蹻)'. The contents of 'Mind Yangseng' included 'control of emotions and thoughts', 'control of self-interest', 'emphasis on the cultivation of mind', and 'avoidance of stress'. The contents of 'Food Yangseng' were related to the amount of food intake and types of food. The contents of 'Lifestyle Yangseng' were related to 'work-rest balance(勞逸)', 'seasons(季節)', 'residence(居處)', 'bath(沐浴)', 'sexual life', 'sleep', and 'clothing'. The frequency of 'work-rest balance(勞逸)' was among the highest. Conclusion : Emphasis on mental health and work-rest balance appeared in 『The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty』 can have significant implications on people of today.

Annals of the Joseon Dynasty were composed of 1,229 volumes, and the 475 copies of total annals were wax-treated. Compared to non-wax treated copies, waxed volume of annals were seriously damaged such as crack, stick, discoloration to brown or black, and partially degradation. It is believed that the purpose of wax treatment for some volumes in the annals of the Joseon Dynasty is to prevent paper to deteriorate and to keep for the long time. But, beeswax could be deteriorated itself more rapidly. As a result, the waxed volume was much more damaged than non-waxed volume. Therefore, the investigation of decomposition and deterioration mechanism of beeswax-treated paper which might be used in waxed volume of the annals of the Joseon Dynasty must be done in order to prevent further decomposition and to restore the degraded wax-treated copies of the annals. For basis data of this purpose, physical properties of beeswax-treated paper be analyzed by coating methods. In result, sample products was manufactured reproducibility in lab scale. Specially, beeswax-treated method improved a orientation of papers. And the brushing method was stronger than the dipping method.

Objective : The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty is a primary historical record that has provided a great deal of information about what the Joseon Dynasty was like. However, as of yet, we know very little about the medical officers in Joseon dynasty, such as their government posts and official ranks. The purpose of this study is look in to the activities, government posts, and official ranks of the medical personnel by examining Yeongjosillok. Methods : First, I selected historical records containing '醫' in Yeongjosillok. Then, I organized medical officers' name by reading each record. I screened historical records in Yeongjosillok with their names to analyze their activities, government posts, and official ranks. When there was limited information available, I referred to The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty. Results : I found 262 historical records in Yeongjosillok containing '醫'. Then I found 26 people who served as medical officers in Yeongjosillok. Also, l found that 11 government posts and 7 official ranks were awarded to them throughout the 110 historical records in Yeongjosillok and The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty. Conclusion : Through this study, I was able to examine the detailed activities of unknown medical officers by studying the historical records in Yeongjosillok and The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty. Under the Joseon Dynasty's class-based society, the middle class had various restrictions. However, I found that medical officers that belonged to the middle class received exceptional treatment despite their social status.

The purpose of the experiment was to evaluate the material stability of the paper of the annals of Joseon Dynasty for the conservation purpose and the categories were as listed below : 1. Procuring traditional Hanji and semi-Hanji from different regional hanji paper mill. 2. Artificial accelerated aging treatment to examination its stability (UV irradiation, dry heat) 3. Analysis of optical, physical characteristic. The suitable Hanji for categories would be used as a reconstruction material for the waxel paper in the papers of the annals of Joseon Dynasty.

Today We have three full series of the annals of Joseon Dynasty. Taebaeksan volume which is one of them shows comparatively good maintenance but Taebaeksan volume also decomposed in patches. The size of cover and inner paper were increased in late Joseon Dynasty, but the weight, thickness and basis weight bears no relation to each other. The oxidation index of paper in annals of pre-periods of King Sunjo shows very high value. After the annals of King Sunjo, the oxidation index of paper is very similar to today's Hanji. L.a.b values of inner paper in the Taebaeksan volume are similar generally. The average length of fiber using image analysis soft ware is 8.08~9.92 mm, that like immediate value of measurement. The air fraction of fiber's range is 1.20~2.12%. It lower than today's Hanji. After considering the factors of the length of fiber, air fraction and FE-SEM, we reached that no difference between raw material of inner paper in the Taebaeksan volume.

King Seonjo, the second son of King Jeongjo, is the twenty-third King of the Joseon Dynasty. He suffered mainly from spleen-stomach weakness syndrome[脾胃虛弱], neurasthenic neurosis and abscess according to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty[朝鮮王朝實錄]. He experienced chicken pox at the age of twelve, measles at thirteen, smallpox at sixteen. In his twenties he was ill with chronic breakdown due to the spleen-stomach weakness[脾胃虛弱], accompanied by neurasthenia. Abscess occurred during his twenties and the septicemia induced by abscess worsening led him to death. Most treatments were herb-extract medication taken orally, and to some extent ointment care was applied as a cure for abscess.

The annals of Joseon Dynasty designated as a national treasure No. 151 and a UNESCO World Memory are among the greatest archives that should be preserved permanently and inherited to future generations through the proven scientific conservation method. The annals of Joseon Dynasty in the custody of the National Archives of Korea as the sole original archive, has been restricted from the direct physical and chemical approaches. In this study, it is to develop a systematic conservation management scheme, based on the conservation state of the annals. Four books from the annals were selected out of 848 books and their moisture contents and optical property profiles were measured through the books. All the defects previously and newly found were pictured in 10~100 magnifications. The wire marks left on the Hanji's of the annals were analyzed. It was found that water damages and paper molds were prevalent in all four annals selected, and it was recommended to conduct more research for the conservation of those damaged areas. It turned out that various qualities of Hanji's were used for the time of publishing the annals because moisture content, optical properties, and wire mark intervals were quite different between papers even within one book.

Cultural heritages represent the histories and intellectual level of a country. The Annals of Joseon Dynasty are regarded as the most valuable resources containing the record of Korean history. In some periods, wax-treated paper was used as the material of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty. Many previous studies have focused on the development of paper used as the material of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty, but the manufacture method of wax-treated volumes and the degradation mechanism of wax have been not fully understood yet. The purposes of the present study are to produce various kinds of wax-treated paper using by different coating methods and to analyse the morphological properties of wax-treated paper. The analysis of SEM demonstrates that beeswax treated paper made by brushing method produces flatter surface and more excellent penetration. Wax layer is produced on the cross section of beeswax treated paper as the increase of coating amount.

The annals of Joseon Dynasty has been known as one of the UNESCO's Memory of the World Heritage. The annals of Joseon Dynasty composed with two kind of books, wax coated book and non coated book. Especially the waxed book have been severely damaged by various reason. For the safety preservation of the annals of Joseon Dynasty waxed book, the thermal ageing mechanism of beeswax coated Hanji paper has been evaluated. The weight loss of waxed Hanji were rapidly increased until 30 days in three temperatures(105, 120 & $150^{\circ}C$) and stabilized after 30 days. The acid value and relative intensity of carbonyl groups in beeswax were increased with strong conditions. This means that the deterioration of beeswax should be progressed with oxidizing reaction. The physical strength and the crystallinity of dewaxed Hanji were decreased with ageing time.
