A computational fluid dynamics model for predicting moderator circulation inside the Canada deuterium uranium (CANDU) reactor vessel has been developed to estimate the local subcooling of the moderator in the vicinity of the calandria tubes. The buoyancy effect induced by the internal heating is accounted for by the Boussinesq approximation. The standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with logarithmic wall treatment is applied to predict the turbulent jet flows from the inlet nozzles. The matrix of the calandria tubes in the core region is simplified to a porous media in which the anisotropic hydraulic impedance is modeled using an empirical correlation of pressure loss. The governing equations are solved by DFX-4.4, a commercial CFD code developed by AEA technology. The resultant flow patterns of the constant-z slices containing the inlet nozzles and the outlet port are "mined-type", as observed in the former 2-dimensional experimental investigations. With 103% full power for conservatism, the maximum temperature of the moderator is $82.9^{\circ}C$ at the top of the core region. Considering the hydrostatic pressure change, the minimum subcooling is $24.8^{\circ}C$.
Safe underground construction in a rock mass requires adequate ground investigation and effective determination of rock conditions. The estimation of rock mass behavior is difficult, because rock masses are innately anisotropic and heterogeneous at different scales and are affected by various environmental factors. Quantitative rock mass classification systems, such as the Q-system and rock mass rating, are widely used for characterization and engineering design. The measurement of rock classification parameters is subjective and can vary among observers, resulting in questionable accuracy. Geophysical investigation methods, such as seismic surveys, have also been used for ground characterization. Torsional shear wave propagation characteristics in cylindrical rods are equal to that in an infinite media. A probabilistic quantitative relationship between the Q-value and shear wave velocity is thus investigated considering long-wavelength wave propagation in equivalent continuum jointed rock masses. Individual Q-system parameters are correlated with stress-dependent shear wave velocities in jointed rocks using experimental and numerical methods. The relationship between the Q-value and the shear wave velocity is normalized using a defined reference condition. This relationship is further improved using probabilistic analysis to remove unrealistic data and to suggest a range of Q-values for a given wave velocity. The proposed probabilistic Q-value estimation is then compared with field measurements and cross-hole seismic test data to verify its applicability.

Developments of Solid-State Gyroscopy during last decades are impressive and were based on thin-walled shell resonators like HRG or CRG made from fused quartz or leuko-sapphire. However, a number of design choices for inertial-grade gyroscopes, which can be used for high-g applications and for mass- or middle-scale production, is still very limited. So, considerations of fundamental physical effects in solids that can be used for development of a miniature, completely solid-state, and lower-cost sensor look urgent. There is a variety of different types of bulk acoustic (elastic) waves (BAW) in anisotropic solids. Shear waves with different variants of their polarization have to be studied especially carefully, because shear sounds in glasses and crystals are sensitive to a turn of the solid as a whole, and, so, they can be used for development of gyroscopic sensors. For an isotropic medium (for a glass or a fine polycrystalline body), classic Lame's theorem (so-called, a general solution of Elasticity Theory or Green-Lame's representation) has been modified for enough general case: an elastic medium rotated about an arbitrary set of axes. Travelling, standing, and mixed shear waves propagating in an infinite isotopic medium (or between a pair of parallel reflecting surfaces) have been considered too. An analogy with classic Foucault's pendulum has been underlined for the effect of a turn of a polarizational plane (i.e., an integration effect for an input angular rate) due to a medium's turn about the axis of the wave propagation. These cases demonstrate a whole-angle regime of gyroscopic operation. Single-crystals are anisotropic media, and, therefore, to reflect influence of the crystal's rotation, classic Christoffel-Green's tensors have been modified. Cases of acoustic axes corresponding to equal velocities for a pair of the pure-transverse (shear) waves have of an evident applied interest. For such a special direction in a crystal, different polarizations of waves are possible, and the gyroscopic effect of "polarizational precession" can be observed like for a glass. Naturally, formation of a wave pattern in a massive elastic body is much more complex due to reflections from its boundaries. Some of these complexities can be eliminated. However, a non-homogeneity has a fundamental nature for any amorphous medium due to its thermodynamically-unstable micro-structure, having fluctuations of the rapidly-frozen liquid. For single-crystalline structures, blockness (walls of dislocations) plays a similar role. Physical nature and kinematic particularities of several typical "drifts" in polarizational BAW gyros (P-BAW) have been considered briefly too. They include irregular precessions ("polarizational beats") due to: non-homogeneity of mass density and elastic moduli, dissymmetry of intrinsic losses, and an angular mismatch between propagation and acoustic axes.
In geological media with anisotropic properties, the strength anisotropy in intact rock is the most important issue in engineering aspects. Point-ioad(P/L) strength test designed to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength(${\sigma}_c$) can be used to evaluate the anisotropic strength characteristics of rocks. The relationship between ${\sigma}_c$ and P/L strength indices(I$_s$), obtained from the banded gneisses distributed in the Cheongyang area, varies depend mainly on the dip angle($\beta$) of foliation. The axial P/L strength indicies(I$_{sa}$) decreases with the increment of $\beta$, whereas diametral P/L strength indices(I$_{sa}$) increase with it. However, the ${\sigma}_c$ decreases with the increments of $\beta$ below about 40$^{\circ}$, but it increases with the increments of $\beta$ over about 40$^{\circ}$ in general. The correlation between ${\sigma}_c$ and I$_s$ suggests that ${\sigma}_c$ is related to the Isa withing low angle($\beta$<40$^{\circ}$) and the I$_{sd}$ within high angle ($\beta$>40$^{\circ}$), respectively. The ratios of I$_s$ to ${\sigma}_c$ are obtained as 11 to 14 in the the gneisses in the study area. The ratio of 24, which is generally adopted value, cannot always be truthworth to the gneisses in the study area. The ratio for the dykes, however, show a good correlation as 21 to 24.5 and, the value of 24 can be used for a homogeneous and isotropic materials such as dykes.

A numerical simulation on the combined natural convection and radiation is carried out in a partially open rectangular enclosure with a heater by using the finite volume and the S-8 discrete ordinate methods. The fluid inside the enclosure is considered as an absorbing, emitting and anisotropic scattering media. The heater causes a natural circulation of the fluid (10$^{5}$$^{9}$ ) which results in significant in-flow of the ambient cold fluid through the partially open wall. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection- radiation, the combined heat transfer results with small Planck numbers (P$_{l}$ <1.0) show much stronger circulation than those of the pure convection, and the fluid circulation is more evident for larger Rayleigh numbers. When one of three radiative properties - the medium absorption coefficient, the wall reflectivity, and the scattering albedo - increases, the fluid circulation and the heat transfer in the enclosure are reduced. The location of the heater and the open ratio of the right wall are also shown to affect the fluid circulation and heat transfer significantly. However, the anisotropy of the scattering phase function is shown to be unimportant for the fluid circulation and heat transfer within the enclosure considered in this study.
We suggest a new method to determine the off-alignment error of the composite film, together with in-plane($R_{in}$) and out-of-plane retardation($R_{th}$) of the compensation film, simultaneously. The composite film consists of a polarizing film and a compensation film for improvement of viewing angle of a liquid crystal display. We regarded the compensation film as o-plate with its optic axis along an arbitrary direction. By using an extended Jones matrix method, the polarization characteristics of the composite film are examined. The calculated Fourier constants, ($\alpha$, $\beta$) curves of the composite film as the azimuth angle is varied at the incident angles of $0^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ}$, respectively, are used to determine the axis misalignment, the tilt angle and the azimuth angle of the compensation film by adopting the linear regressional analysis technique. Since this method can be applied for the inspection of the composite film even after laminating the polarizing film and the compensation film, it will be useful for simplifying the manufacturing process and reducing the production cost of liquid crystal display panels.

Dose calculation algorithms play an important role in radiation therapy and are even the basis for optimizing treatment plans, an important feature in the development of complex treatment technologies such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy. We reviewed the past and current status of dose calculation algorithms used in the treatment planning system for radiation therapy. The radiation-calculating dose calculation algorithm can be broadly classified into three main groups based on the mechanisms used: (1) factor-based, (2) model-based, and (3) principle-based. Factor-based algorithms are a type of empirical dose calculation that interpolates or extrapolates the dose in some basic measurements. Model-based algorithms, represented by the pencil beam convolution, analytical anisotropic, and collapse cone convolution algorithms, use a simplified physical process by using a convolution equation that convolutes the primary photon energy fluence with a kernel. Model-based algorithms allowing side scattering when beams are transmitted to the heterogeneous media provide more precise dose calculation results than correction-based algorithms. Principle-based algorithms, represented by Monte Carlo dose calculations, simulate all real physical processes involving beam particles during transportation; therefore, dose calculations are accurate but time consuming. For approximately 70 years, through the development of dose calculation algorithms and computing technology, the accuracy of dose calculation seems close to our clinical needs. Next-generation dose calculation algorithms are expected to include biologically equivalent doses or biologically effective doses, and doctors expect to be able to use them to improve the quality of treatment in the near future.

The 3D structure of GDL for fuel cells was measured using high-resolution X-ray tomography in order to study material transport in the GDL. A computational algorithm has been developed to remove noise in the 3D image and construct 3D elements representing carbon fibers of GDL, which were used for both structural and fluid analyses. Changes in the pore structure of GDL under various compression levels were calculated, and the corresponding volume meshes were generated to evaluate the anisotropic permeability of gas within GDL as a function of compression. Furthermore, the transfer of liquid water and reactant gases was simulated by using the volume of fluid (VOF) and pore-network model (PNM) techniques. In addition, the simulation results of liquid water transport in GDL were validated by analogous experiments to visualize the diffusion of fluid in porous media. Through this research, a procedure for simulating the material transport in deformed GDL has been developed; this will help in optimizing the clamping force of fuel cell stacks as well as in determining the design parameters of GDL, such as thickness and porosity.
High-pressure synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction experiments were performed on natural illite (K0.65Al2(Al0.65Si3.35)O10(OH)2) using diamond anvil cell (DAC) under two different pressure transmitting media (PTM), i.e., water and ME41 (methanol:ethanol = 4:1 by volume). When using water as PTM, occasional heating was applied up to about 250℃ while reaching pressure up to 2.7 GPa in order to promote both hydrostatic conditions and intercalation of water molecules into the layer. When using ME41, pressure was reached up to 6.9 GPa at room temperature. Under these conditions, illite did not show any expansion of interlayer distance or phase transitions. Pressure-volume data were used to derive bulk moduli (K0) of 45(3) GPa under water and 51(3) GPa under ME41 PTM. indicating no difference in compressibility within the analytical error. Linear compressibilities were then calculated to be βa = 0.0025, βb = 0.0029, βc = 0.0144 under ME41 PTM showing the c-axis is ca. six times more compressible than a- and b-axes. These elastic behaviors of illite were compared to muscovite, one of its structural analogues.
A computer program to numerically predict the permeability tensor of fractured rocks is developed using information on discontinuities which Borehole Televiewer and Borehole Image Processing System (BIPS) provide. It uses orientation and thickness of a large number of discontinuities as input data, and calculates relative values of the 9 elements consisting of the permeability tensor by the formulation based on the EPM model, which regards a fractured rock as a homogeneous, anisotropic porous medium. In order to assess feasibility of the program on field sites, the numerically calculated tensor was obtained using BIPS logs and compared to the results of pumping test conducted in the boreholes of the study area. The degree of horizontal anisotropy and the direction of maximum horizontal permeability are 2.8 and $N77^{\circ}CE$, respectively, determined from the pumping test data, while 3.0 and $N63^{\circ}CE$ from the numerical analysis by the developed program. Disagreement between two analyses, especially for the principal direction of anisotropy, seems to be caused by problems in analyzing the pumping test data, in applicability of the EPM model and the cubic law, and in simplified relationship between the crack size and aperture. Aside from these problems, consideration of hydraulic parameters characterizing roughness of cracks and infilling materials seems to be required to improve feasibility of the proposed program. Three-dimensional assessment of its feasibility on field sites can be accomplished by conducting a series of cross-hole packer tests consisting of an injecting well and a monitoring well at close distance.
