h Study on the Preparation of PMMA/PSt Composite Particles by Sequential Emulsion Polymerization (단계중합법에 의한 PMMA/PSt Composite Particle의 제조에 관한 연구)

  • The core-shell composite latexes were synthesized by stage emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) with ammonium persulfate after preparing monomer pre-emulsion in the presence of anionic surfactant. However, in preparation of core-shell composite latex, several unexpected results are observed, such as, particle coagulation, low degree of polymerization, and formation of new particles during shell polymerization. To solve the disadvantages, We study the effect of initiator concentrations, surfactant concentrations, and reaction temperature on the core-shell structure of polymethyl methacrylate/polystyrene and polystyrene/polymethyl methacrylate. Particle size and particle size distribution were measured using particle size analyzer, and the morphology of the core-shell composite latex was determined using transmission electron microscope. Glass temperature was also measured using differential scanning calorimeter. To identify the core-shell structure, pH of the two composite latex solutions were measured.

Synthesis of High Loading PONF-g-GMA Anion Exchange Fiber Containing Ion Exchange Resin and Their Adsorption Properties of Vanadium (이온교환 수지를 함유한 PONF-g-GMA High Loading 음이온교환 섬유의 합성 및 바나듐 흡착 특성)

  • Aminated PONF-9-GMA ion exchange fabrics were synthesized by radiation induced graft copolymerization. Hybrid ion exchange fabrics combined with aminated PONF-g-GMA fabrics and anionic ion exchange resin were also fabricated by hot melt adhesion method and then their adsorption properties were investigated. Ion exchange capacity of the hybrid ion exchange fabrics was higher than ion exchange fabric and was lower than bead resin. The maximum value was 4.18 meq/g. Adsorption breakthrough time for vanadium of the hybrid ion exchange fabric was 550 min, which was faster than bead resin but slower than fibrous ion exchanger. The Breakthrough time of the hybrid ion exchange fabrics gets longer with increasing pH. The initial breakthrough time occurred around 400 min with increasing vanadium concentration.

  • Mono-dispersed polyamide 6(Nylon 6) micro-particles sized in $4{\sim}5\;{\mu}m$ diameter were prepared by dispersion polymerization of ${\varepsilon}-caprolactam$ in liquid paraffin as a dispersion medium. Potassium metal(K) as a catalyst was separately added twice over the anionic ring-opening polymerization of ${\varepsilon}-caprolactam$. The size, shape, and size-distribution of prepared particles were varied with the concentration of anti-coagulant as well as the amount of initiator and catalyst. As the initiator concentration was in the range of $0.97{\sim}1.17\;wt%$ in monomer, about 90.6% of yield was accomplished. In addition, the highest yield of well-spherically shaped micro-particles was achieved by adding about $1.3{\sim}1.4\;wt%$ of catalyst.

Plasma Treatment Effect of Organic/Organic Core-Shell Acrylic Adhesive Binder (II) (Organic/Organic Core-Shell 아크릴 접착바인더의 플라즈마 처리영향 (II))

  • Adhesive binders with core-shell structure of organic/organic pair were prepared by emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers, such as methyl methacrylate(MMA), ethyl acrylate(EA), n-butyl acrylate(BA), and styrene(St). Ammonium persulfate (APS) was used as an water soluble initiator in the presence of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Non-woven fabric and leather were impregnated with the adhesive binder. The surface of the impregnated fabric and leather were treated with plasma technique and then kinetics analysis and mechanical properties were measured. The conversions of the polymerization of core-shell binder (MMA/EA, MMA/BA) were greater than 90%. When the core-shell binder was prepared at equimolar conditions, the increasing effect of the core-shell binder on the state peel strength of the impregnated and plasma-treated non-woven/non-woven fabric has the order of MMA/St, EA/BA, BA/MMA, EA/St, and EA/MMA. When the core-shell binder was prepared at non-equimolar conditions, the increasing effect of the core-shell binder on the state peel strength of the non-woven fabric/leather has the order of MMA/BA, BA/EA, MMA/EA, St/MMA, and EA/St.

Surface Properties of the Dried Coacervate Film Affect Dry Feel of the Shampoo Composed of Cationic Polymer and Anionic/Amphoteric Surfactant (양이온 폴리머와 음이온/양쪽성 계면활성제로 형성된 코아세르베이트 건조 필름 특성이 샴푸 건조 후 사용감에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between physical properties of dried coacervate films and dry feel for shampoo composition. Simple shampoo compositions were made of two different cationic charge density polymers in the same surfactant compositions. The simple shampoo compositions were diluted with distilled water to make coacervate. Formed coacervate was collected by centrifuge (3,000 rpm, 30 min). Coacervate was coated on the glass plates and dried in drying oven (for 1 h, $50^{\circ}C$) to make the thin film. We carried out an experiment on measurement of contact angle, moisture loss ratio and SEM image analysis of the dried coacervate film. Dry feelings of the shampoos were evaluated by panel using hair tresses. Results show that the properties of dried coacervate films affect the dry feel of the after shampooing.

Research on Characteristics of Multifunctional Soil Binder Based on Polyacrylamide (폴리아크릴아마이드를 기반으로 하는 다기능성 토양안정제의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • For the efficient recovering of collapsed sloped soil, using a soil binder that can support the soil strongly and help the growth of plants is very important. The soil binder should also have functions of recovering the soil ecologically as well as be environmental friendly materials. In this research, optimum values of the water content and permeability and direct shear strength were searched by adding the water absorbent and coagulant into the soil binder. The polyacrylamide (PAM) with various anionic strength, super absorbent polymer (SAP) and cellulose ether (CE) were used as a soil binder, water absorbent and coagulant, respectively. Effects of the soil binder on the characteristics of soil were observed by changing the mixing ratio of PAM, SAP and CE. Experimental results showed that the soil binder increased the direct shear strength tens of times and the water content around two times, whereas decreased the water permeability. Also, the addition of CE to increase the coagulation of SAP increased more of the direct shear strength and water content.

  • Hydroxypropylmethylcelluloses (HPMC) are cellulose ethers which may be used as the basis for hydrophilic matrices for controlled release oral delivery and offer the advantages of being non-toxic and relatively inexpensive. In this work, we designed new drug release system using HPMC as matrix, manufactured by direct compression technology and have investigated the effects of the controlling factors on drug release from a swellable hydrophillic delivery system. It was found that the release rate of the drug decreased with increasing the polymer molecular weight and the polymer content in tablets, and was independent of compaction pressure and pH of dissolution fluids. Especially, the ability of the anionic surfactant, sodium laurylsulfate, to retard the release of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride from HPMC was characterised. With increasing the concentration of the sodium laurylsulfate within the matrix, drug release rate decreased. It is believed that, provided the pseudoephedrine hydrochloride and the sodium laurylsulfate are oppositely charged, they will bind together in situ within the HPMC matrix, leading to reduced drug release rates.

  • In the presence of various clays, nylon/clay nanocomposites were synthesized by anionic polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam (CL) via monomer casting method. The effect of each clay on polymerization reaction was investigated and the change in gallery structure of clays during polymerization was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. When the three kinds of organo-clays were used in the amount of 2 wt% of CL, polymerizations were not successful due to an increase in viscosity during polymerization. Significant changes were not observed in the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites containing organo-clays with 1 wt%. On the other hand, composites containing natural clay up to 5 wt% were successfully prepared, and the composite with 5 wt% showed a decrease in tensile strength and elongation, and remarkable improvement in thermal properties.

  • Linear and cross-linked waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) based on isophorone diisocyanate and mixed diols of poly(tetramethylene glycol)/hydroxyethyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-OH) were synthesized with dimethylol propionic acid as an anionic component, trimethylolpropane as a cross-linking agent, and butanediol as a chain extender and characterized. The hydrophobicity, $T_g$, stress-strain behaviors of the linear or cross-linked siloxane-containing WPU (WPU-Si) films with different PDMS content were analyzed by using water contact shape analyzer, energy dispersive spectrometer, dynamic mechanical analyzer, and universal testing machine. The results reveal that as the PDMS content increased, the hydrophobicity of WPU-Si films increased, $T_g$ moved to higher temperature, the breaking stress increased, and the breaking strain decreased.

  • Core shell binder of organic/organic pair that has two different properties within a particle were prepared by a step emulsion polymerization of methacrylate (MMA), styrene (St), ethyl acrylate (EA), butyl acrylate (BA), and 2-HEMA by using an water soluble initiator(APS) in the presence of an anionic surfactant (SDBS). Unwoven tensile strength of the core shell binder after processing and measuring the PSt/PMMA/2-HEM core shell with the binder is a value represents the highest was $10.75\;kg_f$/2.5cm, elongation measurements PEA/PBA core shell binder showed the highest value was 120.00%. In conclusion, using the core shell binders were able to control the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation.
