  • At present, it is very common to use techniques beyond the 2D (two-dimensional) in animations which are found in motion pictures, OVA and TV series. As you can see, PIXAR and Disney have reduced their 2D departments and recently put more effort into 3D (three-dimensional) animation. There is no doubt that producing 3D animation is the big trend. Along with this trend, the national education institutions and the national support policies are also changing to be supportive of 3D animations. We, however, should ask ourselves, if we are on the right track with this change. Through the analysis of the methods of creating 2D animation which we should keep as it is, but instead we import and incorporate with 3D techniques of Japanese 2D animation, I would like to present the importance and the significance of the 2D animation and also to suggest an effective way to create 2D fused with 3D computer graphics techniques.

Expression of Anthropomorphized Animal Characters in Animations -focused on the Animation of America- (애니메이션에 등장하는 의인화된 동물캐릭터의 표현 -미국 애니메이션 중심으로-)

  • This study analyzed the influences of human personalities and physiognomies on anthropomorphized animal characters and the relationship between the personalities and images of anthropomorphized animal characters and the associated images of real animals when animations expressed the animals. At first, the study classified animals who often appeared in animations, selected the representative characters whose personalities were well expressed, visualized them and rated them with words expressing personalities. Then, it rated personalities which were associated with the name of each animal(word) with words expressing personalities and analyzed the relationship the images and word association. The study results indicates that the similarity of two tests is very high and the images of animals which are perceived by human are anthropomorphized and expressed with familiar images for human. The study suggests expressing appropriate personalities when expressing anthropomorphized animal characters in animations.

Visual textuality of stereoscopic 3D animation (3D 입체 애니메이션의 영상 특징에 대한 연구)

  • Stereoscopic 3D animation contents are in the rise as a key part of contents market. Major animation studios are planning to produce 3D animations in a stereoscopic process. This study aims at understanding the visual textuality of 3D animation contents at its early stage. To understand 3D animation, , are analyzed. Stereoscopic 3D animations are exploring the new visual aesthetics using the specific storytelling, sequence ordering, camera working, shot size and camera angles etc. Based on these visual textualities, stereoscopic 3D animations are constructing telepresence, multi-senses of individual spectators. Stereoscopic 3D animations have formed their own aesthetics and cultural meanings in the digital age.

Creating Stick Figure Animations Based on Captured Motion Data (모션 캡쳐 데이터에 기초한 스틱 피규어애니메이션 제작)

  • We present a method for creating realistic 2D stick figure animations easily and rapidly using captured motion data. Stick figure animations are typically created by drawing a single pose for each frame manually for the entire time interval. In contrast, our method allows the user to summarize an action (e.g. kick, jump) for an extended period of time into a single image in which one or more action lines are drawn over a stick figure to represent the moving directions of body parts. In order to synthesize a series of time-varying poses automatically from the given image, our system first builds a deformable character model that can make arbitrary deformations of the user's stick figure drawing in 2D plane. Then, the system searches for an optimal motion segment that best fits the given pose and action lines from pre-recorded motion database. Deforming the character model to imitate the retrieved motion segment produces the final stick figure animation. We demonstrate the usefulness of our method in creating interesting stick figure animations with little effort through experiments using a variety of stick figure styles and captured motion data.

  • This case study states the suitability of using the program, Flash, when producing television series animations. It states the conveniences for the users of Flash when used as an animating tool, the advantages Flash has due to compatibility with other programs, the reduction of production costs, and more. The purpose of this case study is to introduce new overseas Flash animation production techniques for easier production, technically and financially. The outcome of the analysis states the importance of training animators that are able to make high quality television series animations using the new overseas flash animation techniques.

A study on differences in the humor embedded in stories between Korean and American feature-length animation (한·미 장편 애니메이션에서 스토리와 관련된 유머의 차이에 대한 고찰)

  • Internationally, the Korean feature-length animation is not making a successful box office hit. Being a box office hit all around the world is related with entertainment and laughter cannot be excluded as a element that gives such enjoyment. Although the humor would be playing an important role in globalization of Korean animation, studies that analyzed humor in Korean and U.S. animation are still lacking. Recently, there are cases that several Korean animations aim at overseas market entrust pre-production of scenario or storyboard. This paper examines the humor embedded in stories of feature-length animations that had the most differences by analyzing frequency and contents, and through interviews. It also proposes ways to improve the humor embedded in stories of Korean animations.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the visual effects of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) found in animations. So far, ASMR contents have been produced in one-person media or advertising contents with particular purposes. Unlike that, in animations, they have been produced in intuitive forms mainly for delivering messages. From the 2000's, however, gradually, animations intended for both appreciation and comfort and healing appeared,and such effects are similar to those of ASMR contents. This study has analyzed the visual effects of ASMR focusing on the Korean animated "Sonagi"(2017).

A Research of Real-time Rendering Potentials on 3D Animation Production

  • In recent years, with the rapid development of real-time rendering technology, the quality of the images produced by real-time rendering has been improving, and its application scope has been expanded from games to animation and advertising and other fields. This paper analyses the development status of real-time rendering technology in 3D animation by investigating the 3D animation market in China, which concludes that the number of 3D animations in China has been increasing over the past 20 years, and the number of 3D animations using real-time rendering has been increasing year by year and exceeds that of 3D animations using offline rendering. In this study, a real-time rendering and offline rendering 3D animation are selected respectively to observe the screen effect of characters, special effects and environment props, and analyse the advantages and disadvantages of the two rendering technologies, and finally conclude that there is not much difference between real-time rendering 3D animation and offline rendering 3D animation in terms of quality and the overall sense of view, and due to the real-time rendering of the characteristics of the WYSIWYG, the animation designers can better focus on the creation of art performance. Real-time rendering technology has a good development prospect and potential in 3D animation, which paves the way for designers to create 3D content more efficiently.

Performative Gender Identity of Women in Disney Animations (디즈니 애니메이션 여성 캐릭터의 수행적 젠더 정체성 연구)

  • Animation is a medium that can be enjoyed by many age groups, and it often reflects the discourse and ideology of the time. Therefore, studying the tendency of gender identity as it is expressed in animations is meaningful as a process to understand current trends. Therefore, I examined how the female characters' performative gender identity has been expressed in Disney animations and how it has changed. Disney animations have stuck to dichotomous gender performance, with men playing active and adventurous roles, while women play submissive and passive roles. Disney began to deviate slightly from the dichotomous gender performance through "Pocahontas" and "Mullan", which emphasized the heroic role of women. However, these animations have been limited in the way that love stories between men and women make up the main theme. In "Frozen", however, women actively explored their lives by overcoming these limitations, and expressed their happiness through sisterhood rather than love between men and women. Therefore, "Frozen," which expresses an active female character who sets up her own kingdom as an independent entity, is meaningful in that it has demonstrated the changed gender performance.
