In spite of dramatic change of environmental condition since Cambrian big-bang (explosion occurred ca.540 mya, the phylum Arthropoda retains a great diversity, and it is estimated approximately that 1-10 million arthropod species are extant on the earth. Except for an extinct arthopod subphylum Trilobita, extant arthropods could be divided into five subphyla: Hexapoda, Crustacea, Myriapoda, Chelicerata, and Pycnosonida. During the last century, systematists have disputed about interrealtionships among Arthropoda and its relatives (Onychophora, Tardigrada, and Pentastomida), arthropod phylogenetic position within protostome animals, monophyly or polyphyly of the phylum Arthropods, and interrelationships among five arthropod subgroups (subphyla) etc. Recently, new animal phylogeny was reported that protostomes could be clustered into two groups, Lophotrochozoa and Ecdysozoa, and molting animals such as Nematoda and Arthropoda were included within the Ecdysozoa. On the basis of the new animal phylogeny, first of all, I would mention phylogenetic positions and relationships of Arthropods and its relatives to introduce controversies of arthropod phylogeny in phylum level of animals. After that, I focused mainly on the controveries related to arthropod monophyly and phylogenetic relationships among four major arthropod groups except Pycnogonida. In this work, Pycnogonida which is a relatively small group and one of the five arthropod subphyla was not handled significantly although there are some controversies if it is a sister taxon of chelicerates or the most primitive arthropod group (namely, a sister of four remains arthropod groups).
Sequences of cytochrome b gene and control region of mitochondrial DNA from Korean common otters (Lutra lutra lutra L.) were examined to provide the genetic information for the conservation of this subspecies. Two haplotypes and one haplotype were revealed in cytochrome b gene and control region, respectively. The available sequences of European common otter (L. l. lutra) from GenBank were compared together with those of Korean common otter in order to determine the degree of sequence variation between them. In cytochrome b gene sequences, two haplotypes from Korea and two haplotypes of Europe showed differences in 12 of 1,045 sites. The Tamura-Nei nucleotide distances between two European haplotypes was 0.10% and those between two Korean haplotypes was also 0.10%, but those between Korean haplotypes and European ones ranged from 0.96% to 1.16%. In the control region, one Korean haplotype and seven European ones showed differences in seven of 300 sites; the Tamura-Nei distances among seven European haplotypes were 0.34% to 1.01%, but those between Korean haplotype and European ones ranged from 1.01% to 1.69%. Although further molecular and morphological studies with specimens from eastern Asia including Amur region and northeast China are needed, it is possible that the Korean common otter might be closer or identical to the far-eastern Asian common otter, L. l. amurensis Dybowski.
The morphology of the two marine urostyloid ciliates, Pseudokeronopsis carnea (Cohn, 1866) and Uroleptopsis citrina Kahl, 1932, in the family Pseudokeronopsidae, collected from the Yellow Sea, and the East Sea, Korea, respectively, were studied using live observation and protargol impregnation. Additionally, the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene was sequenced. These two species are firstly recorded in Korea. The main diagnostic key is as follows. Pseudokeronopsis carnea: body outline elongate-elliptical, brown-reddish or orange-red in colour in vivo; bicorona of 16-24 frontal cirri; one buccal and two frontoterminal cirri; 7-10 transverse cirri; 5-7 dorsal kineties; two types of cortical granules (one orange-red pigment, mainly grouped around cirri and dorsal bristles, arranged in typical rubra-pattern; the other, colourless and blood-cell-shaped, and densely distributed); contractile vacuole in the posterior half of the cell on the left side, usually in posterior 1/3-2/5. Uroleptopsis citrina: body outline elongate-elliptical, lemon-yellow in colour in vivo; two types of cortical granules (one yellow pigment; the other, blood-cell-shaped, densely distributed); bicorona of 12-18 frontal cirri; 2-3 frontoterminal cirri; two midventral rows comprising 26-35 cirri (consisting of anterior paired cirri, non-paired single cirri, and posterior paired cirri); three dorsal kineties. In addition, the SSU rRNA sequences of the two species were compared with public database of these species and consequently, showed high similarity.
Two urostyloid ciliates, collected from brackish water in Korea, were identified as Diaxonella pseudorubra pseudorubra (Kaltenbach, 1960) Berger, 2006 and Pseudokeronopsis flava (Cohn, 1866) Wirnsberger, Larsen and Uhlig, 1987. The description was based on living, protargol impregnated specimens. These species are described as follows: Diaxonella pseudorubra pseudorubra: body size in vivo $145-230{\times}40-60\;{\mu}m$, elongated ellipsoidal in shape. Cytoplasm reddish and flexible. Adoral zone of membranelles occupied 30-40% of the body; composed of 33-44 membranelles; 1-3 frontoterminal cirri, 1-4 frontal row cirri, 4-6 buccal cirri, 6-10 transverse cirri. Midventral rows composed of 14-24 cirri, four left marginal rows, one right marginal row. Two kinds of cortical granules; the larger one is yellowish and the smaller one is reddish. Pseudokeronopsis flava: body size in vivo $150-210{\times}30-45\;{\mu}m$, elongated ellipsoidal shape. Cytoplasm yellowish and flexible. Adoral zone of membranelles occupied 25-30% of body; composed of 44-58 membranelles in number. Frontal cirri forming bicorona composed of 5-7 cirral pairs, 2-3 frontoterminal cirri, one buccal cirrus, and 2-3 transverse cirri. Midventral rows composed of 18-33 cirri, 34-53 left marginal cirri, and 40-58 right marginal cirri. Two kinds of cortical granules; the larger one is colorless and "blood-cell-shaped," and the smaller one is yellowish. Diaxonella pseudorubra pseudorubra is different from the most similar subspecies, D. pseudorubra pulchra, in cytoplasmic color and number of midventral cirri. Pseudokeronopsis flava is different from its most similar congeners in pigment granular color, number of bicorona, number of midventral cirri, and position of the contractile vacuole.
A new species of Eudactylopus Scott A., 1909 is described from the southern coast of Korea. The specimens were collected using a light trap set overnight at the entrance near a pier. Eudactylopus yokjidoensis n. sp. is similar to E. andrewi Sewell, 1940 and E. spectabilis (Brian, 1923) in two key respects: similar length of proximal and distal inner setae on female P2 enp-2, and modification of two subapical setae on male P2 endopod. However, E. yokjidoensis can be differentiated from the two species by following morphological characteristics: in females, the length ratio of cephalothorax/2nd-4th thoracic somites combined is smaller in E. yokjidoensis than other two species (1 : 0.8 vs. 1 : 1); antennule has nine segments (vs. 7-segmented in E. andrewi); P2 to P4 each bears a process in medial distal margin of basis, while it is just smooth in E. spectabilis; in males; the length ratio of cephalothorax to 2nd-4th thoracic somites combined is smaller in E. yokjidoensis than other two species (1 : 0.6 vs. 1 : 1 in E. andrewi and 1 : 0.8 in E. spectabilis); and P5 exopod has a comb-like innermost seta, while it is bipinnate seta in E. spectabilis. To prove the Korean species of Eudactylopus to be new, full descriptions of both sexes are given here, and the claim is supported by distinct genetic differences between E. yokjidoensis and E. spectabilis (22.3-22.7%) in the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I(mtCOI) sequence.
Samples of striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius Pallas, from eight localities in s southwestern islands and coasts in Korea were collected and analyzed together with samples from the mainland and Jeju island. In chromosomal analyses no variation was revealed in karyotypes among samples from Korea. In morphometric analyses samples from Wan and Bogil islands formed a large-size g group (A. agrarius chejuensis) with those from Jeju island, whereas samples from Jin and H Hajo islands formed a small-size group (A. agrarius coreae) with those from the mainland including southwestern coasts It is supposed that small-size population of striped field mice in Wan and Bogil islands w were extinct and replaced by large-szie population of striped field mice immigrated from Jeju island by humans.
Conthocamptus mirabilis Sterba is redescribed on the basis of the material newly collected from the type locality near Bekijing, China, with an evaluation of the variability of several characters. C. mirabilis possesses the plesiomorphic characters of the round and narrow hyaline membrane and the unmodified outer terminal furcal setae, while it also bears the apomorphic ones of the male-type caudal rami in females and the modified outer terminal setae of male leg 4 exopod. the peculiar dorsal keel ornamented with spinule array on the female's caudal rami is the most significant feature differentiating this species from its relatives of the mirabilis group, which turned out to be a species group of closely related and largely allopatric or parapatric species. Affinities with the allies of the species group are discussed, and the morphological discrepancies differentiating the Japanese population are enumerated.
As one of the serial studies on the taxonomy of Conthocamptus mirabilis species group in South Korea, C. semicirculus Kikuchi, widely distributed in the southern part of the Far East, and C. coreensis n. sp. from the middle west of South Korea are recorded. Intraspecific variability of some important characters like outer caudal setae and the spinous process of male leg 3 exopod was examined in Korean population of C. semicirculus. Canthocamptus coreensis n. sp. possesses the plesiomorphic characters of the round and narrow hyaline membrane of anal operculum and lacking the sexual reverse transformation in female caudal rami, while it also evolves the apomorphic ones of the modified outer apical setae of male leg 4 exopod and the spinous process of male leg 3 exopod. A key to the five species of the species group known from Korea is prepared.
Some actiniarians were collected from the coasts of Jejudo and Baekdo Islands in Korean waters from 1971 to 2004. They are identified into three species within three families, which are newly recorded to Korean actiniarian fauna: Halcampella maxima Hertwig, 1888 within the tribe Athenaria, and also Aulactinia coccinea (Verrill, 1866) and Stichodactyla tapetum (Ehrenberg, 1834) within the tribe Thenaria. They are described in detail with figures and tables together with the distribution and size of cnidae. In preserved specimens, mature oocytes of H. maxima were observed in winter. Also oocytes and sperm sacs of S. tapetum were surveyed at separate individuals in summer. The unique feature of A. coccinea is a body wall with simple adhesive verrucae extended from margin to limbus in longitudinal rows. In the genus Stichodactyla, the smallest species, S. tapetum is distinguished from S. haddoni by short bulbous tentacles, less than 1.0 mm long, densely packed on the oral disc and also conical marginal ones, 1.5-2.0 mm long. As a result of this study, the Korean actiniarian fauna consists of four athenarian and 23 thenarian species in suborder Nynantheae
Some hydromedusae were collected from the East Sea ($36^{\circ}$30'124'N and $130^{\circ}$06'446'E), Yousu and Youngkwang with horizontal plankton net during from Nov. 2001 to Dec. 2002. They were identified into Proboscidactyla flavicirrata in the order Limnomedusae, and Muggiaea bargmannae and Diphyes bojani in the suborder Calycophorae of the order Siphonophora, respectively. P. flavicirrata is similar with P. stellata in the shape and size, but it is distinguished from later species in that P. stellata has six radial canals, 24 short marginal tentacles and dichotomous branching pattern. The suborder Calycophorae is the first recorded in Korea and posseses only develop a nectosome. In Muggiaea bargmannae, anterior nectophore is simillar with Dimophyes arctica in the shape of nectophore, but it is distinguished from the later in that D. arctica has a undivided mouth plate and deeper hydroecium. In Diphyes bojani, anterior nectophore is simillar with Diphyes dispar in the shape of nectophore, but it is distinguished from the later in which D. dispar has a deeper hydroecium and more prominant dorsal tooth. No posterior nectophores of Muggiaea bargmannae and Diphyes bojani have been observed.
