Differences in Voluntary Cow Traffic between Holstein and Illawarra Breeds of Dairy Cattle in a Pasture-based Automatic Milking System

  • Automatic milking systems (AMS) rely upon voluntary cow traffic (the voluntary movement of cattle around a farm) for milk harvesting and feed consumption. Previous research on conventional milking systems has shown differences between dairy cow breeds for intake and milk production, however, the ability to manipulate voluntary cow traffic and milking frequency on AMS farms through breed selection is unknown. This study investigated the effect of breed (Holstein Friesian versus Illawarra) on voluntary cow traffic as determined by gate passes at the Camden AMS research farm dairy facility. Daily data on days in milk, milk yield, gate passes and milking frequency for 158 Holstein Friesian cows and 24 Illawarra cows were collated by month for the 2007 and 2008 years. Illawarra cows had 9% more gate passes/day than Holstein cows over the duration of the study; however, the milking frequency and milk yield of both breeds were similar. Gate passes were greatest for both breeds in early lactation and in the winter (June to August) and summer (December to February) seasons. These findings highlight an opportunity to translate increased voluntary cow movement associated with breed selection into increased milking frequencies, milk production and overall pasture-based AMS performance.

  • 도로건설로 인한 동물서식지의 단절을 막기 위해서 전 세계에서 가장 보편적으로 많이 설치되는 것이 생태통로이다. 한국에서는 2000년대 초반부터 생태통로가 도입되기 시작했고, 시행착오를 거쳐서 2010년 생태통로를 위한 국가기준과 설계기준이 만들어졌다. 최근 이러한 생태통로가 건설비용이 높은 반면, 동물이용이 저조하다는 이유로 비판을 받고 있다. 본 연구는 어떤 동물이 얼마만큼 이러한 시설을 이용하는지 조사하려고 하였다. 이를 위해서 백두대간에서 가장 전형적인 육교형과 터널형 생태통로를 선정하였고 적외선 CCTV를 설치해서 모니터링하였다. 그 결과, 비판과는 달리 다양한 동물이 이용하는 것으로 나타났다. 흥미롭게도 다양한 조류가 관찰되었고 보호동물종도 관찰되었다. 동물이용은 계절, 날씨 및 주변 식생이 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 적외선 카메라를 사용하였을 때 동물을 자세하게 촬영할 수 있었으나 전기소모량이 많은 것이 단점이다. 지난 10년간 전국적으로 많은 생태통로가 설치되었다. 이제 시설의 효율성과 성공적인 활용을 위해서 모니터링과 유지관리가 필요하다.

  • Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) merely depend on improving the oocyte maturation and their developmental competence to produce good quality embryos. Oocyte maturation passes through long and complex molecular steps starts from the early embryonic life and ends with sperm fertilization. Oocyte developmental competence can be attained by improving the nuclear and cytoplasmic mechanisms together with some epigenetic maturation. In this review, we highlight the cornerstones of oocyte maturation on both nuclear and cytoplasmic levels. Interfering or supporting these molecular mechanisms would help in the development of novel regulating agents for reproductive performance of humans and livestock species.

A Numerical Modelling for the Prediction of Phase Transition Time(Ice-Water) in Frozen Gelatin Matrix by Ohmic Thawing Process

  • Ohmic heating occurs when an electric current is passes through food, resulting in a temperature rise in the product due to the conversion of the electric energy into heat. The time spent in the thawing is critical for product sterility and quality. The objective of this study is to conduct numerical modelling between the effect of ohmic thawing intensity on PTT(phase transition time) at constant concentration and the effect of matrix concentrations on PTT at constant voltage condition. the stronger ohmic thawing intensity resulted in decreasing the PTT. High ohmic intensity causes short PTT. And the higher gelatin concentration, the faster increment of PTT. A numerical modeling was executed to predict the PTT influenced by the power intensity using exponential regression and the PTT influenced by gelatin concentration using logarithmic regression. Therefore, from this numerical model of gelatin matrix, it is possible to estimate exact values extensively.

배합사료 내 항생제 사용금지 이후 양돈농가 생산성적 변화 조사 (Investigation on changes in pig farm productivity after ban of antibiotics growth promoter in commercial mixed feed)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes in the pig productivity after ban of antibiotics growth promoter in commercial pig farms. A total 74 pig farms that herd size is from less than 100 sows to more than 500 sows were selected for survey. Changes of pig productivity before/after ban of antibiotics were analyzed by comparing with our survey results and report of KPPA (Korean Pork Producers Association, 2013). In the results, no difference on pig productivity was observed by herd size among our survey farms. Live born piglets have been raised as time passes since 2003, and then it reach to 10.6 head per sow in 2012. The numbers of weaning piglet tended to increase, but sow turnover ratio was found to be a tendency to decrease after ban of antibiotics in our survey results. There was no effect of using antibiotics on mortality of pre- and post- weaning. Marketing per sow per year (MSY) does not be improved because the post-weaning mortality was maintained at a high level, despite live pig born and weaning piglet have increased after 2003. In conclusion, a ban of antibiotics growth promoter does not directly affect to pig productivity, but it needs the efforts to reduce the mortality of post-weaning for improvement of pig productivity. We suggest that this data will be useful to swine industry as the fundamental information.

Effects of Intraruminal versus Intravenous Infusions of Acetone on the Ruminating and Masticating Behavior of Goats

  • Acetone, which is produced from butyric acid when it passes through the rumen wall, was infused into the rumen and jugular veins of three female goats to investigate the role of acetone in ruminating and masticating behavior. The ruminating behavior, as measured by the number of boli and the ruminating time, decreased (p<0.05) with intraruminal acetone infusion. However, the ruminating behavior did not change significantly in response to intravenous acetone infusion. Feed intake significantly decreased with intraruminal acetone infusion, but not with intravenous acetone infusion. The concentrations of acetone in the plasma increased significantly (p<0.05) with both acetone infusion regions. Ruminal fluid acetone, and isopropyl alcohol (IPA), which is one of the ketone bodies, produced from acetone by bacterial action in rumen, concentrations were significantly increased (p<0.05) with both acetone infusion regions. These results suggest that the chemoreceptors sensitive to acetone are more likely to be in the rumen epithelium, portal system, or liver, where they can respond to acetone levels.

건염햄 제조시 소금수준과 건조기간이 제품 중량감소 및 영양적 특성에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Salting Levels and Drying Periods on Weight Loss and Nutritional Compositions of Dry-cured Ham under Controlled Ripening Condition)

  • 돼지고기 저지방 부위의 활용도를 제고하기 위해 54개의 뒷다리를 사용하여 소금 처리수준과 건조기간이 건염햄의 중량감소 및 영양적 특성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 조사하기 위해 소금 처리수준을 고염구(7%), 중염구(5%), 저염구(3%)로 하여 180일, 270일, 360일 동안 건조하여 건염햄을 제조하였다. 제조단계별 소금처리량에 따른 중량감소율을 조사한 결과, 염지단계에서는 고염구의 중량감소율이 5.62%로 가장 높았고, 염지 후 정치단계에서는 저염구의 중량감소율이 12.35%로 가장 높았으며, 발효단계에서는 고염구가 저염구보다 유의적으로 높은 중량감소율을 보였다(p<0.05). 또한 건조단계에서는 모든 소금 처리수준에서 건조기간이 증가할수록 중량감소율이 증가하는 경향을 보였다(p<0.05). 원료육 대비총 중량감소는 염지 시 사용된 소금처리 수준에는 영향을 받지 않으며, 건조기간이 길수록 감량이 많아졌다. 건조기간은 단계별 소금처리수준 모두에서 수분함량을 감소시켰으며(p<0.05), 상대적으로 조지방과 조단백질 함량이 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 또한 건조기간은 건염햄의 지방산 조성에도 영향을 미쳤으며, 건조기간이 길어질수록 포화지방산 함량은 많아지고 불포화지방산 함량은 줄어드는 경향을 보였다.

도플러 효과를 이용한 단일 저궤도위성의 동물추적시스템 개발 (Animal Tracking System Using the Doppler Effect for Single LEO Satellite)

  • 도플러 효과를 이용해서 동물의 위치를 추적하는 경우 동물에 장착된 단말기의 송신신호를 위성의 수신기에서 얼마나 많이, 정확하게 측정하느냐에 따라 위치 추적의 정밀도가 달라진다. ARGOS 위성시스템의 경우 다수의 위성을 운용하여 단말기의 송신신호를 비교적 많이 측정하며, 이러한 많은 측정 데이터를 이용해서 상당히 높은 위치추적 정밀도를 유지하고 있다. 하지만 단일 위성을 사용하는 동물추적시스템의 경우 위성이 단말기를 통과하는 짧은 시간동안 송신 신호를 많이 측정하기 힘들며, 이는 위치추적의 정밀도를 떨어뜨리는 가장 큰 원인이 된다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 단일 위성에서 도플러 천이 측정 데이터의 개수를 증가시키기 위해서 도플러 천이 변화율을 이용하여 수신 데이터를 추정하였으며, 추정된 데이터를 측정치로 사용하여 측정 데이터의 개수를 증가 시켰다. 결과적으로 도플러 천이 변화율을 이용하여 비교적 높은 위치추적 정밀도를 획득 할 수 있으며, 단일 위성을 사용하는 동물추적시스템에 적합한 방식임을 알 수 있다.

제주흑우 동결정액 제조 시 Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL)의 첨가가 동결 융해 후 정자의 성상에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) on Motility, Viability, Membrane Integrity and Acrosome Integrity of Frozen-thawed Sperm in Korean Jeju Black Bull)

  • This study was designed to determine whether low-density lipoporoteins (LDL) extracted from egg yolk in extender improve the function of Korean Jeju Black Bull semen. The semen was cryopreserved with 5% ethylene glycol (EG) or 7% glycerol (G) extenders containing 10% egg yolk (EY), 4% LDL and 5% EY or 8% LDL. Frozen-thawed sperm were evaluated sperm motility, viability, membrane integrity and acrosome integrity. Post-thawed sperm motility has been significantly higher (p<0.05) in 4% LDL + 5% EY ($69.00%{\pm}4.18$; EG and $63.00%{\pm}9.75$; 7% G) than 8% LDL ($57.00%{\pm}5.70$; EG and $52.00%{\pm}4.47$;G). Treatment of 4% LDL + 5% EY-EG ($66.85%{\pm}5.06$) has been significantly improved sperm viability compared to other treatments except 10% EY - EG. Moreover, in membrane integrity, swollen sperm ratio has been only significantly increased (p<0.05) in 4% LDL + 5% EY - EG ($64.65%{\pm}6.10$) among all treatments. In assess to detect acrosome integrity, especially, AR pattern ratio has been significantly decreased (p<0.05) in 4% LDL + 5% EY - EG among all treatments. In sperm viability as time passes, between 4% LDL + 5% EY and 10% EY, there was no significant difference, but 8% LDL was significantly decreased sperm viability in EG (1 and 2 hrs) and G (30 min, 1, 2, 5 and 12 hrs) extender. However, there were no significant differences among all treatments except 8% LDL-G in sperm membrane integrity. 8% LDL-G has been significantly decreased swollen sperm ratio at 5 hrs after thawed. It is concluded from these results that 4% LDL + 5% EY to the freezing extender showed more positive effect on the frozen-thawed spermatozoa in Korean Jeju Black bull.

성숙(成熟) rat에 있어서 고환적출후(睾丸摘出後) 흉선(胸線)의 재출현(再出現)에 관한 연구(硏究) (Studies on reappearance of thymus after orchidectomy in ageing rats)

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the changes of blood pictures, hitological findings and testosterone concentrations after orchidectomy in ageing rat. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The total W.B.C. counts were $9.27{\pm}12{\times}10^3/mm^3$ in the control group, $9.54{\pm}34{\times}10^3/mm^3$ in the sham-operation group and $12.08{\pm}28{\times}10^3/mm^3$ in the orchidectomy group when it was checked 50days after the operation. 2. The number of lymphocytes after orchidectomy began to increase gradually as time passes, thereafter markedly increased $10.12{\pm}03{\times}10^3/mm^3$ at 50days after orchidectomy. 3. The concentration of testosterone in serum began to decrease gradually after orchidectomy showed lowest level $1.68{\pm}0.61pg/ml$ at 50days after orchidectomy while it was $5.82{\pm}0.39pg/ml$ in control group. 4. The histological findings of thymus after orchidectomy were marked increase of thymic lymphocyte, disapearance of fat cells and appearance of mitotic figures.
