  • Objective: This study was conducted to determine reduction of various odorous materials from a swine farm equipped with a continuous pit recirculation system (CPRS) with aerobically treated liquid manure. Methods: The CPRS is used in swine farms in South Korea, primarily to improve air quality in pig houses. In this study, CPRS consists of a manure aerobic treatment system and a fit recirculation system; the solid fraction is separated and composted, whereas the aerobically treated liquid fraction (290.0%±21.0% per day of total stored swine slurry) is continuously returned to the pit. Four confinement pig barns in three piggery farms were used; two were equipped with CPRS and the other two operated a slurry pit under the slatted floor. Results: All chemical contents of slurry pit manure in the control were greater than those of slurry pit manure in the CRPS treatment (p<0.05). Electrical conductivity and pH contents did not differ among treatments. The biological oxygen demand of the slurry pit treatment was greater than that of the other treatments (p<0.05). Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen contents of the slurry pit treatment were greater than those of other treatments (p<0.05). Odor intensity of the CPRS treatment was lower than that of the control at indoor, exhaust, and outside sampling points (p<0.05). The temperature and carbon dioxide of the CPRS treatment in the pig barn was significantly lower than those of control (p<0.05). All measured odorous material contents of the CPRS group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The CPRS application in pig farms is considered a good option as it continuously reduces the organic load of animal manure and lowers the average odorant concentration below the threshold of detecting odorous materials.

  • This research was conducted to examine the temporal methane ($CH_4$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission trends in livestock agriculture from year 1990 to 2011 with Tier 1 national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory reporting method, which was related to efforts of decreasing GHG emissions and to achievement of voluntary GHG mitigation target. Methane emissions from enteric fermentation were calculated with default $CH_4$ emission factors of IPCC. Methane and $N_2O$ emissions from manure treatment processes were calculated with Tier 1 and mixture of Tier 1 and Tier 2 including $N_2O$ emission factors of manure treatment systems and nitrogen excretion rate of livestock, respectively. According to 2013 National GHG Inventory Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification report, GHG emission fluctuations from enteric fermentation and manure treatment processes were similarto livestock head fluctuation. GHG emissions from enteric fermentation were mainly affected by beef cattle including Hanwoo, while manure treatment processes were affected by various livestock.

  • The performance of grass filter strips (GFS) in abating $PO_4$-P concentrations from the forage cropland was tested in an experiment on the 10% slope in Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration (RDA) from October 2007 to September 2009. Forage croplands with rye-corn double cropping system applied with chemical fertilizer and livestock manure (LM) were compared in a natural condition. The plots were hydrologically isolated Main plots consisted of the length of GFS, such as 0m, 5m, 10m and 15m. Sub plots consisted of the type of LM, such as chemical fertilizer (CF), composted cattle manure (CCM) and composted swine manure (CSM). Concentrations of PO4-P in surface runoff water were reduced as the length of GFS increased. Especially, GFS with 10m and 15m reduced $PO_4$-P concentrations significantly compared to that with 0m and 5m (p<0.05). The results from this study suggest that GFS improved the removal and trapping $PO_4$-P from forage croplands.

  • A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of seeding methods and rates on the growth characteristics, forage yield and nutritive value of sorghum X sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, cv. Pioneer 988) grown under application of animal manure in 1995. The application amount of animal manure were 40MT in cattle manure, 30MTha in swine and poultry manure. The methods and rates of seeding treated in this study were drill of 30kg, and broadcast of 30, 60 and 100kgha of seeding rates. The plant height was 180cm, 191cm and 204cm in cattle, swine and poultry manure, respectively. Plant height in the plot of drill was higher by about 15cm than those of broadcast plots. The dry matter(DM) yield was 7.73, 8.87 and 9.80MTha in cattle, swine and poultry manure, respectively. A significant higher forage yield was produced in the plot of drill, compared with broadcast(Pc0.05). DM yields in broadcast of 60kg and lOOkg of seeding rates were higher than that of 30kg of seeding rate of broadcast. However, no significant difference in forage yield was found between 60kg and IOOkg of seeding rates. The average DM yield was 11.16, 6.94, 8.26 and 8.83MTIha in drill(30kg), broadcast 30, 60 and 100kgIMT of seeding rates, respectively. The nutritive value of sorghum x sudangrass hybrid was very similar among treatments. The crude protein yields were 1,010kg in cattle manure, 1,180kg in swine manure, and 1,592kg in poultry manure. The protein yield was significantly high in the plot of drill. In conclusion, seeding by drill was recommended for forage production and protein yield of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid, and proper seeding rates were 30kg in drill and 60kg in broadcast. • The drying test was carried on the globular type cow manure pellet for use in solid fuel applications. The globular type cow manure pellet fuel was sorted according to size by rotatory sieves. The three kind of drying methods such as convection hot-air drying method, infrared ray drying method and superheated steam method were used to dry the globular type cow manure pellet. Among the three kind of drying methods, superheated steam method of dry time was the shortest. The apparent specific gravity and low calorific value of dried cow manure pelltes was about $250{\sim}350kg/m^3$ and above 3,000 kcal/kg respectively. The smaller the particle size of cow manure pellets, the less drying time was required. The time was required very less for drying smaller particle size cow manure pellet when compared to larger size. In the case of the same drying condition, it has been found that reducing the particle size of cow manure fuel pellet is an important factor for shortening the drying time of the livestock manure pellet.

  • Due to development of the national economy growth, livestock goods consumption has rapidly increased over the past 30 years. It has led livestock breeders to increase their livestock numbers. An increased number of livestock have consequently resulted in an increasing animal feces generation. According to the agricultural statistics provided by the Bureau of Statistics, livestock manure amounts to 47,235 thousand tons in 2013. To treat livestock manure, various types of treatment facilities like composting, liquid fertilization, purification, and anaerobic digestion facilities are being applied. In composting facility, there are four kinds of agitation system: escalator, paddle, screw and rotary type. In case of liquid fertilization process, there are two types of system: aeration and anoxic type. There are about 8,000 liquid fertilization facilities for treatment livestock manure in Korea. For purification of livestock manure, the treatment process is divided by three steps: Solid/Liquid separation process, Secondary purification process and advanced oxidation process. About 21 thousand tons of livestock manure was treated by anaerobic digestion facility in 2012. In every type of facility for livestock manure treatment, it is very important to choose the optimal deodorization equipment for the livestock manure treatment facility. In this study, the investigation has been carried out for six years to analyse the characteristics of livestock manure treatment facilities and related technique of Korea.

  • Recently, saw dust manure has been widely used in horticultural crop production in Korea. Animal manure is produced by decaying of livestock manure mixed with saw dust, and contained higher nutrients and ion concentration than the traditional manure made from rice straw and grasses. Therefore, a continuous application of the animal manure disregarding to soil characteristics may be ruined the soil conditions. This study was conducted to investigate the transportation of the nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, and ion concentration of the animal manure applied to volcanic and non-volcanic soils in Jeju islana Soil chemical analysis were done before and 180 days after animal manure application. After animal manure application, $NO_3$-N moved up to 90cm in volcanic soil, while the movement was limited to 60 cm in non-volcanic soil. Phosphate concentration was high up to 30 cm, where crop roots are mainly distributed, in volcanic soil, however, the phosphate moved up to 60 cm in volcanic soil. Exchangeable potassium moved up to 90 cm in volcanic soil, but the movement wns limited up to 60 cm in non-volcanic soil. For both soil types, no significant different in ion concentrations was observed up to 60 cm in soil depth, though the concentrations were higher in volcanic ash soils as compared to the non-volcanic ash soils.

  • The study on design criteria of solid-liquid separator for dairy farms was done by testing various screens, presses, and RPMs of screw auger with remodeled screw-press type pig-manure separator. The moisture content of separated solid increase from 68.3% to 74.2% as auger rotating speed increased from 9.8 to 29.2 RPM at 34.8 kPa of pressure and 1.0 mm of slit wedge wire screen condition. The moisture contents of separated solid were 72~77%, work efficiencies were 16~18 kg/min at 1.0 mm of slit wedge wire screen. The efficiency was higher than one at 0.5 mm of slit wedge wire screen, which was used to separate for pig manure. The best work efficiency was 18 kg/min at 42.5 kPa, 1.0 mm slit screen. The separated solid moisture content was 75% at this condition.

  • Background: Dietary manipulation is a common practice to mitigate gaseous emission from livestock production facilities, and the variation of fat level in the diet has shown great influence on ruminal volatile fatty acids (VFA) and enteric methane generation. The changes in dietary fat levels influence rumen chemistry that could modify manure nutrient composition along with odor and gaseous emissions from manure management facilities. Methods: A field experiment was carried out on beef cattle feedlots to investigate the effect of four levels of dietary fat concentrations (3 to 5.5 %) on the manure composition and gaseous emissions (methane-$CH_4$, nitrous oxide-$N_2O$, carbon dioxide-$CO_2$ and hydrogen sulfide-$H_2S$) from the feedlot pen surface. The experiment was carried out over a 5-month period from June to October during North Dakota's summer-fall climatic condition. Air and manure sampling was conducted five times at a 20-30 day intervals. Results: Overall, this research indicated that fat levels in diet have no or little effect on the nutrient composition of manure and gaseous emission from the pens with cattle fed with different diet. Though significant variation of gaseous emission and manure composition were observed between different sampling periods, no effect of high fat diet was observed on manure composition and gaseous emission. Conclusions: It can be concluded that addition of fat to animal diet may not have any impact on gaseous emission and manure compositions.
