Bone grafts are essential for promoting bone healing in some orthopedic cases, and synthetic bone materials have been widely used for bone defects. In addition, osteoinductive proteins such as bone morphogenetic protein and fibroblast growth factor promote osteoblast differentiation and proliferation. The combination of these factors is very useful clinically for promoting bone healing. In this study, we report the use of synthetic bone materials and osteoinductive proteins to repair bone defects in two dogs.
Healing of 48 cases of radial fractures in small breed dogs treated with acrylic pin external fixation was evaluated retrospectively to investigate the factors affecting the healing of radial fractures. The mean age of the subjects was 15.02 months, the mean body weight was 3.48 kg, and the mean maximum length of the radius (MLR) was 90.77 mm. External skeletal fixation frames type 1a, 2a, and 3 were used; among them type 2a was used most frequently (75%). The mean time to clinical union (TCU) was 67.17 days, and the success rate was 95.8%. Age, bodyweight, MLR, and occurrence of complications increased TCU significantly. Among complications, pin loosening, swelling of the operated forelimb tissue for more than 2 weeks, and coexistence of two or more complications increased TCU significantly (p < 0.05). There was no relationship between location of the fracture and TCU. The results of this study may be useful to predict the prognosis of radial fractures in small dogs.
This study conducted a survey on the recognition and demand such as recognition level, policy necessity, service demand and policy demand by supply types in order to provide the basic data for successful settlement of agro-healing services. According to the survey on awareness, 45.2% of respondents were aware of the healing farming, and 31.3% of respondents had experience in participating in the agro-healing services. 63.6% of respondents replied that they were experiencing reasons for participating in agro-healing services. Respondents who had no knowledge of agro-healing services responded that 76.7% of respondents said they would not participate. More than two-thirds of respondents in all types indicated that they needed agro-healing services. As a result of evaluating the maximum willingness to pay, there was a willingness to pay for farm work healing about 15,800 won, horticulture healing about 14,800 won, forest healing about 13,400 won, and animal assisted healing about 17,000 won. Improving accessibility and strengthening awareness were high priorities for inconveniences and improvements. 70.1% of the respondents said that policies for agro-healing services are needed. Development of agro-healing programs and contents was the first priority for support policy. The result of this study is expected to provide reference data that can be suggested for agro-healing policy establishment.
Background Chitosan (CS) is a well-known antimicrobial dressing material. Moreover, widely used amniotic membranes contain growth factors beneficial for wound healing. Herein, we created a novel amnion-conjugated CS-alginate membrane dressing and tested its wound healing potency in a diabetic swine model. Methods The bovine amniotic powder growth factor contents were evaluated by protein assay, and the powder's wound healing effects were assessed in vitro by HaCaT cell scratch closure. In vivo, two minipigs developed streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Serial serum glucose measurements and intravenous glucose tolerance tests were performed to confirm their diabetic status. Twelve square-shaped wounds created on each pig's back were randomly divided into control (n = 4), CS (n = 4), and amnion-CS (AC; n = 4) groups and treated accordingly with different dressings. Wound healing in each group was assessed by measuring wound contraction over time, capturing wound perfusion with indocyanine green (ICG) angiography, and histologically analyzing inflammatory markers. Results Amniotic powder elution promoted HaCaT cell migration in the scratch wound model, suggesting its beneficial in vitro wound healing effects. In vivo, the CS and AC groups showed earlier wound contraction initiation and reepithelialization and earlier wound perfusion improvement by ICG angiography than the control group. Additionally, the wound size of the AC group at week 3 was significantly smaller than those in the control group. There was no significant difference in the numbers of acute and chronic inflammatory cells between the groups. Conclusion The amnion-conjugated CS-alginate membrane, as well as CS dressing alone, could be a favorable dressing option for diabetic wounds.

Purpose: Diabetic foot ulcers are closely related to body surface heat, which can be affected easily by temperature differences. This study examined the correlation between the healing process of diabetic wounds and abnormal diurnal temperature through an animal study. Materials and Methods: Rats in the abnormal diurnal temperature group and control group were given a 10 mm sized full-thickness skin ulcer. Wound size progression was observed in both groups. H&E and Masson's trichrome staining was performed at 14 days after wound formation, and the number of vessels per unit area and histology analysis were performed. The changes in the ulcer were measured through three dimensional cross-section area using INSIGHT® devices. Results: The wound recovery period (granulation ingrowing) was 24 days in the abnormal diurnal temperature model and 20 days in the control group. The thickness of scar tissue was 402±23.19 ㎛ in the control group and 424.5±36.94 ㎛ in the diurnal temperature model. Neovascular formation was counted as 5.1±0.97 for the control group and 4.16±0.94 for the diurnal temperature model group. Conclusion: Delayed and inferior diabetic wound healing was observed in the abnormal diurnal temperature group, which was characterized by greater diurnal variations than the typical growth environment.

Background and Objectives This study was undertaken to assess the stability and efficacy of laser therapy (808 nm), Liquiband (a commercial topical skin adhesive product), and a combination treatment, for application in oral ulcers. Materials and Methods The oral ulcer rat animal model was used to determine the efficacy of photobiomodulation, Liquiband, or combination therapy. Ulcers were induced by injecting 60% acetic acid in the oral mucosa. Three days after ulcer confirmation, the chemically induced ulcers were treated with either laser (808 nm), Liquiband, or a combination of both, every two days for 8 days (4 sessions). Combination therapy was performed by first treating with laser followed by application of the Liquiband. Reduction in ulcer area size was subsequently determined, and animals were sacrificed at 5 and 10 days after the last administration, for histological observation of the extracted oral ulcer tissue samples. Results In this study, treatment with either laser (808 nm) or commercial Liquiband product as well as the combined treatment significantly enhanced oral ulcer healing in the rat animal model. The effect of laser treatment is mainly attributed to collagen synthesis, whereas application of the Liquiband promotes vascularization and formation of granulation tissue. Our results indicate that further optimization of the combined therapy could synergistically and significantly enhance oral ulcer healing. Conclusion Laser or Liquiband treatment of oral ulcer in the rat animal model exert different outcomes, but both methods confirm significant effects relative to the untreated group. The combined treatment group with laser and Liquiband showed marked oral ulcer healing, but further optimization is required to get highly significant results and establish the potential synergistic effect of the combination therapy, as compared to the individual enhancing effects of healing oral ulcers.
The present study was carried out to examine the bone healing effect of a magnet as the feasibility test for clinical application. The surgical technique of tibia puncture was performed with male Sprague Dawley rats for investigating radiological and histological findings. The treated group was attached the magnet, and control group was attached the placebo magnet for 4, 6, and 8 weeks respectively. The rats were taken a radiograph for examining radiological findings on 2-weekly interval for 8 weeks. Also, the rats were partly euthanized for investigating histological findings on 2-weekly interval from 4 week to 8 week. In the magnet treated rats, the healing process of bone trauma was positively stimulated to compare with control rats.
This study compared the instrument performance and tissue healing of a steel scalpel with a $CO_2$ laser in an animal urinary bladder surgery model. Landrace and Yorkshire mixed breed pigs were used. Two symmetrical incisions were made in urinary bladder of each pig. One incision was made on the left side of ventral aspect on urinary bladder using a steel scalpel, while the other incision was performed on the right side using a $CO_2$ laser with an 8W output power. Each instrument was evaluated clinically for speed, ease of incision, and extent of bleeding. At 7 and 21 days after initial wounding, each wound was taken for histological observations. The scalpel was an easier instrument to use in the confines of the urinary bladder tissue, compared with the laser. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups. The amount of bleeding was less in the laser group but the time of the incisions was shorter with the scalpel. Scalpel incisions showed complete restoration of the epithelium and muscularis. On the other hand, the laser incisions showed incomplete restoration of the epithelium and muscularis. However, most of wound healing in the laser incisions was accomplished according to the time lapse. Although the scalpel produced less damage to the urinary bladder tissue and was easier to handle than the $CO_2$ laser, it did not provide hemostasis that was helpful for use on highly vascular tissue. The $CO_2$ laser provided good hemostasis, but delayed wound healing. In conclusion, the $CO_2$ laser provided better hemostasis and better surgical field than the scalpel. The $CO_2$ laser was used effectively in urinary bladder incision.
Objectives: This study was performed to analyze the single dose toxicity of Chukyu (spine-healing) pharmacopuncture. Methods: All experiments were conducted at the Biotoxtech, an institution authorized to perform non-clinical studies under the regulations of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations. Sprague-Dawley rats were chosen for the pilot study. Doses of Chukyu (spine-healing) pharmacopuncture, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mL, were administered to the experimental groups, and a dose of normal saline solution, 1.0 mL, was administered to the control group. This study was conducted under the approval of the Institutional Animal Ethic Committee. Results: No deaths or abnormalities occurred in any of the four groups. No significant changes in weight, hematological parameters or clinical chemistry between the control group and the experimental groups were observed. To check for abnormalities in organs and tissues, we used microscopy to examine representative histological sections of each specified organ; the results showed no significant differences in any of the organs or tissues except in one case, where interstitial infiltrating macrophages were found in one female rat in the 0.5-mL/animal experimental group. Conclusion: The above findings suggest that treatment with Chukyu (spine-healing) pharmacopuncture is relatively safe. Further studies on this subject are needed to yield more concrete evidence.
This study was designed to prepare an animal model for partial thickness bum wound which can be employed for testing topical therapy. We first evaluated whether rabbit ear and mouse back skin wound model could differentiate the wound healing process in terms of degree of re epithelialization, required days for complete wound closure, presence of scarring. $2^{nd}$ degree wet bum were prepared on mouse back skin and rabbit ear by applying 5 mL hot water($85{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$) for 7 see followed by 5 mL ice-cold 0.5% acrynol solution for cooling and disinfecting the inflicted area. After removing the dead epidermis layer at 24 hr, tested dressings were applied for specified time and wound progression was investigated. In mouse model, wound contraction was the primary wound closing mechanism, which is quite different from human wound healing process. In rabbit ear model, epidermal regeneration was the major wound healing process rather than wound contraction and the difference in wound healing property among tested dressings could be clearly demonstrated. A rabbit ear model could differentiate the wound progression among open, occluded and epidermal growth factor(EGF) treated wound. Four sites of circular wound(diameter: 1 cm) on the anterior part of rabbit ear could be employed for the comparative wound healing study. For obtaining reproducible bum wound, degree of bum depth and bum sites should be carefully controlled in addition, employing rabbits of same strain and weight. The result suggests that rabbit ear could be employed as a reliable and human-resembled wound model.
