  • In this paper the instability of the system which has a disk and a mass-spring-damper system interacting through a medium having stiffness and damping is analyzed. To solve the equations of motion of this systme, it is assumed that the solution consists of the eigenfunctions which are the products of the Bessel functions and sine or cosine functions. The former represents the radial characteristics of the disk and the latter represents the circumferential characteristics. Using this assumed solution and the orthogonality of the eigenfunctions, the equations of motion can be transformed into a set of equations of motion with variables dependent only on the time. After this set is changed to the state equation, the eigenvalue problem can be made. Once the eigenvalues are calculated according to the angular velocity of the disk, the dynamic characteristics ofthis system is obtained. Because the thickness of the disk and the element characteristics of the mass-spring-damper system have important effects on the stability of the system, it will be understood how these factors affect the system and then a method to ameliorate the stability of the system with a disk will be presented.

  • The spindle with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of machine tool system, while the rotor has unbalance mass inevitably. Therefore, it is important to recognize the effect of unbalance mass. This paper presents analysis of dynamic behavior of a high speed spindle with a built-in motor. The spindle is supported by the angular contact ball bearings and the rotor is fixed at the middle of spindle. The spindle used in CNC automatic lathe has been investigated using combined methodologies of finite elements and transfer matrices. The Houbolt method is used for the integration of the system equations and the dynamic behavior of spindle is obtained considering unbalance mass of rotor. Results show that increasing rotational speed of spindle magnifies the whirl responses of spindle seriously. Also the whirl responses of spindle are affected by the other factors such as unbalance mass and bearing stiffness.

  • Transmission error (TE) is defined as "the angular difference between the ideal output shaft position and actual position". As TE is one of the major source of the noise and vibration of gears, it is originally studied with relation of the noise and vibration of the gears. However, recently, with the relation of mesh stiffness, TE has been studied for fault detection of spur gear sets. This paper presents a physics-based theory on fault diagnostics of a planetary gear using transmission error. After constructing the lumped parameter model using DAFUL, multi-body dynamics software, we developed a methodology to diagnose the faults of the planetary gear including phase calculation, signal processing. Using developed methodology, we could conclude that TE could be a good signal for fault diagnostics of a planetary gear.

  • In order to discuss the availability of hydrostatic guideways driven by the coreless linear motor to ultra precision machine tools, a prototype of guideway is designed and tested in this research. A coreless linear DC motor with the continuous force of 156 N and a laser scale with the resolution of 0.01 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are used as the feeding system. The experiments are performed on the static stuffiness, motion accuracy, positioning accuracy, microstep response and variation of velocity. The guideway has the infinite axial stillness within 50 N of applied load, and by the motion error compensation method using the Active Controlled Capillary, 0.08 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of linear motion error and 0.1 arcsec of angular motion error are acquired. The guideway also has 0.21 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of positioning error and 0.09 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of repeatability, and it shows the stable response against the 0.01 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ resolution step command. The velocity variation of feeding system is less than 0.6 %. From these results, it is confirmed that the hydrostatic guideway driven by the coreless linear motor is very useful fur the ultra precision machine tools.

  • This paper deals with the vibration and stability of a circular cylindrical shaft, modeled as a tapered thin-walled composite beam and spinning with constant angular speed about its longitudinal axis, and subjected to an axial compressive force. Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method are employed to derive the governing equations of motion. The resulting eigenvalue problem is analyzed, and the stability boundaries are presented for selected taper ratios and axial compressive force combinations. Taking into account the directionality property of fiber reinforced composite materials, it is shown that for a shaft featuring flapwise-chordwise-bending coupling, a dramatic enhancement of both the vibration and stability behavior can be reached. It is found that by the structural tailoring and tapering, bending natural frequencies, stiffness and stability region can be significantly increased over those of uniform shafts made of the same material. In addition, the particular case of a classical beam with internal damping effect is also included.

  • In present article, utilizing the Love shell theory with volume fraction laws for the cylindrical shells vibrations provides a governing equation for the distribution of material composition of material. Isotopic materials are the constituents of these rings. The position of a ring support has been taken along the radial direction. The Rayleigh-Ritz method with three different fraction laws gives birth to the shell frequency equation. Moreover, the effect of height- and length-to-radius ratio and angular speed is investigated. The results are depicted for circumferential wave number, length- and height-radius ratios with three laws. It is found that the backward and forward frequencies of exponential fraction law are sandwich between polynomial and trigonometric laws. It is examined that the backward and forward frequencies increase and decrease on increasing the ratio of height- and length-to-radius ratio. As the position of ring is enhanced for clamped simply supported and simply supported-simply supported boundary conditions, the frequencies go up. At mid-point, all the frequencies are higher and after that the frequencies decreases. The frequencies are same at initial and final stage and rust itself a bell shape. The shell is stabilized by ring supports to increase the stiffness and strength. Comparison is made for non-rotating and rotating cylindrical shell for the efficiency of the model. The results generated by computer software MATLAB.

  • Axisymmetric and quasi-static finite element analysis of an inflated tire rotating with constant angular velocity and contact to road has been performed. Centrifugal force effect was added to load stiffness matrix and equation of effective material properties were calculated by the Halpin-Tsai formulation. In this report, radial truck/bus tire was analyzed. It was inflated and rotated at speeds up to 140 km/h. Then, contact problem was performed to calculate stress-strain field of tire wiht flat rigid road under the load due to the self-weight of a vehicle. Significant changes of stress-strain field of tire were observed in the finite element analysis. Shear stress, strain and strain energy density were rapidly increased at the dege of #2 belt at freely rotating state. This concentrated stress and strain made belt edge sparation. Under the condition of flat riged road contact, strain energy density of #2 belt, carcass turn-up part were concentrated and bigger values than only freely rotation state. Therefore, dynamic behaivor of tire has to considered as design factors which are affected to belt edge separation and bead breakage.

  • This study focuses on demonstrating the effectiveness of vibration control of tuned rotary mass damper (TRMD) for reducing the bidirectional and torsional response of the irregular asymmetric structure with voided slabs under earthquake excitations. The TRMD arranged in plane of one-story eccentric structure is proposed as a distributed tuned rotary mass damper (DTRMD) system. Lagrange's equation is used to derive the equations of motion of the controlled system. The optimum position and number of TRMD are numerically investigated under harmonic excitation and the control effects of different distributions are discussed. Furthermore, a shaking table test is conducted under different excitation cases, including free vibration, forced vibration and seismic wave to investigate the absorption performance of the device. The numerical simulations of different distributions of the TRMDs show that the DTRMDs are more effective in reduction of the displacement response of the asymmetric structure under the same mass ratio, even when the degree of eccentricity becomes large. However, with small degree of eccentricity, the unreasonable asymmetrical arrangement may cause the increase of the peak value of the rotational angular displacement. Finally, the experimental investigations exhibit similar results of translational displacement of the structure. It is concluded that the vibration of the irregular asymmetric structure can be controlled more economically and effectively by reducing the mass ratio through reducing the quantity of TRMDs at the high stiffness end.

  • Purpose: To analyze the outcome of metatarsal lengthening of first brachymetatarsia by callotasis using an external fixator. Materials and Methods: Between January 1998 and February 2004, 10 patients (17 cases) were reviewed. The mean age at operation was 17.3 years. Seven patients had bilateral first brachymetatarsia and eight patients had combined 4th brachymetatarsia. The operations were performed with a monoexternal fixator, and distraction was started at a rate of 0.75 mm/day after 7 days. The radiographic results were evaluated by lengthening amount and percentage, fixation time, and healing index. Complications and AOFAS score were evaluated. Results: The average lengthening amount was 17.7 mm and the average lengthening percentage was 43.4%. The external fixation time was 107 days and average healing index was 69.8 days/cm. The evaluation according to AOFAS score was excellent in 12 cases and good in 5 cases. Complications were 4 cases of hallux valgus, 4 of metatarsophalangeal joint stiffness, 3 of medial angular deformity, 3 of pes cavus, 2 of pin breakage, 2 of pin site infection, and 1 of skin hyperpigmentation. Conclusion: Callotasis for 1st brachymetatarsia is a very useful treatment method with high patient satisfaction, excellent healing rate and early ambulation without bone graft. Nevertheless, great care must be taken to minimize the various possible complications.
