  • In this paper, we will discuss the absolute angular error control mode for the Gun/Turret driving system. The Gun/Turret driving controller receives absolute angular error calculated from the fire control system (FCS). Thus, the Gun/Turret driving controller is subjected to step command to cause residual vibration and system unstable. In order to reduce residual vibration and to ensure the system stability, we propose an error motion profile method with two types of trapezoidal and S-Curve. The validity of the proposed error motion profile method is confirmed via simulation by observing that the resulting position error, driving power, and power density satisfied the control performance.

  • For compensating the error motion of hydrostatic tables, we have introduced a way that the clearance of table is controlled corresponding to the amount of eror with the actively controlled variable capillary, named as ACC. In previous paper, through the basic test, it was confirmed that by the use of ACC, the error motion within 2.7$\mu$ m of a hydrostatic table could be compensated with the resolution of 27nm, 1/100 contollable range, and with the frequency bandwidth of 5.5Hz, structurally. In this paper, we performed practical compensation of the linear and angular motion error of hydrostatic table using ACC. For improving the compensated motion accuracy, iterative control method is put into the control system. The experimental results show that by the simultaneous compensation of error, the linear and angular motion error are improved upto 0.25$\mu$ m and 0.4arcsec, which are about 1/10 and 1/3 of the non-compensated motion errors respectively.

  • To compensate for the motion errors in hydrostatic tables, a method to actively control the clearance of a bearing corresponding to the amount of error using actively controlled capillaries is introduced in this paper. The design method for an actively controlled capillary that considers the output rate of a piezo actuator and the amount of error that must be corrected is described. The basic characteristics of such a system were tested, such as the maximum controllable range of the error, micro-step response, and available dynamic bandwidth when the capillary was installed in a hydrostatic table. The tests demonstrated that the maximum controllable range was $2.4\;{\mu}m$, the resolution was 27 nm, and the frequency bandwidth was 5.5 Hz. Simultaneous compensation of the linear and angular motion errors using two actively controlled capillaries was also performed for a hydrostatic table driven by a ballscrew and a DC servomotor. An iterative compensation method was applied to improve the compensation characteristics. Experimental results showed that the linear and angular motion errors were improved to $0.12{\mu}m$ and 0.20 arcsec, which were about $1/15^{th}$ and $1/6^{th}$ of the initial motion errors, respectively. These results confirmed that the proposed compensation method improves the motion accuracy of hydrostatic tables very effectively.

  • In this paper, measuring system of 5 DOF motion errors are proposed using two capacitive type sensor, a straight edge and a laser interfoerometer. Yawing error and pitching error are measured using the laser interferometer, and rolling error is measured by the reversal method using a capacitive type sensor. Linear motion errors of horizontal and vertical direction are measured using the sequential two point method. In this case, influence of angular motion errors is compensated using the previously measured angular motion errors. In the horizontal direction, measuring accuracy is within 0.05 $\mu$m and 0.27 arcsec, and in the vertical direction, it is within 0.15 $\mu$m and 0.5 arcsec. From these results, it is confirmed that the proposed measureing system is very effective to the measurement of 5 DOF motion errors in the ultra precision feed tables.

  • The error motion of a machine tool spindle directly affects the surface errors of machined parts. Spindle motion errors such as three translational motions and two rotational motions are undesirable. These are usually due to the imperfectness of bearings, stiffness of spindle, assembly errors, and external force or unbalance of rotors. The error motions of the spindle need to be reduced for achieving the desired performance. Therefore, the level of error motion needs to be estimated during the design and assembly process of the spindle. In this study, an estimation method for five degree-of-freedom (5 DOF) error motions for a spindle with an angular contact ball bearing is suggested. To estimate the error motions of the spindle, the waviness of the inner-race of bearings and an external force model were used as input data. The estimation model considers the geometric relationship and force equilibrium of the five DOFs. To calculate the error motions of the spindle, not only the imperfections of the shaft and bearings but also driving elements such as belt pulley and direct driving motor systems are considered.

  • Effectiveness of corrective machining algorithm is verified experimentally in this paper by performing corrective lapping work to single side and double sides hydrostatic tables. Lapping is applied as machining method. Machining information is calculated from measured motion errors by applying the algorithm, without information on rail profile. It is possible to acquire 0.13pm of linear motion error, 1.40arcsec of angular motion error in the case of single side table, and 0.07pm of linear motion error, 1.42arcsec of angular motion error in the case of double sides table. The experiment is performed by the unskilled person after he experienced a little of preliminary machining. Experimental results show that corrective machining algorithm is very effective, and anyone can improve the accuracy of hydrostatic table by using the algorithm.

  • Effectiveness of a corrective machining algorithm, which can construct the proper machining information to improve motion errors utilizing measured motion errors, is verified experimentally in this paper, Corrective machining process is practically applied to single and double side hydrostatic bearing tables. Lapping process is applied as a machining method. The machining information is obtained from the measured motion errors by applying the algorithm, without any information on the rail profile. In the case of the single-side table, after 3 times of corrective remachining, linear and angular motion errors are improved up to 0.13 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 1.40 arcsec from initial error of 1.04 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 22.71 arcsec, respectively. In the case of the double-side table, linear and angular motion error are improved up to 0.07 /$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 1.42 arcsec from the initial error of 0.32 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 4.14 arcsec. The practical machining process is performed by an unskilled person after he received a preliminary training in machining. Experimental results show that the corrective machining algorithm is very effective and easy to use to improve the accuracy of hydrostatic tables.

  • A precision four-degree-of-freedom measurement system has been developed for simultaneous measurement of four motion errors of a linear stage, which include straightness and angular errors, The system employs a retro-reflector to detect the straightness errors and a plane mirror to detect the angular errors. A common-path compensation method for laser beam drift is put forward, and the experimental results show that the influences of beam drift on four motion errors can be reduced simultaneously. In comparison with the API 5D laser measuring system, the accuracy for straightness measurement is about ${\pm}1.5{\mu}m$ within the measuring range of ${\pm}650{\mu}m$, and the accuracy for pitch and yaw measurements is about ${\pm}1.5$ arc-seconds within the range of ${\pm}600$ arc-seconds.

  • Recently, the tasks assigned to surface ship are becoming diverse and important. In this trend, shipboard directional pedestals are widely used for surveillance and electronic warfare because ships are always under angular motion such as rolling, pitching and yawing. To estimate the performance of pedestal, the motion responses of vessel as well as mechanical characteristics of pedestal should be considered. In this study, both the motion responses of vessel which the pedestal will be mounted and the behavior of 3-axis pedestal are considered. Numerical analysis based on potential theory is used to obtained motion characteristics of vessel and then 6-DOF motions of vessel are simulated under operational condition. 1st-order time delay model and LQR control algorithm are used for modeling of pedestal drive model and control model, respectively. By using coordinate transform, the angular motions which the pedestal should compensate are calculated from the vessel's angular motion. Through these M&S methodologies, time history of pedestal behavior and maximum angular error of each pedestal axis are obtained. Overall M&S results show that 3-axis pedestal compensate the angular motion induced by vessel, efficiently.
