The influence of tire belt angle on the Plysteer Residual Aligning Torque(PRAT) and the cornering stiffness by the FEM has been studied. The PRAT is a performance factor of the tire about vehicle pull, and the cornering stiffness has relation to vehicle steering response of outdoor test. To validate FE model for analysis, simulation data for both the static stiffness(vertical, lateral) and the PRAT have been compared with the experimental data. In addition to the characteristics of the PRAT and the cornering stiffness due to the tire belt angle, rolling and cornering contact characteristics have been studied. The tendency of the PRAT and the cornering stiffness due to the belt angle can be used as a guide line for the tire design in relation to vehicle pull and vehicle steering response.
The driver model during drift cornering was examined, and a technique to improve vehicle movement performance during drift cornering was investigated. Based on the results obtained, the driver was found to steer using feedback of the body slip angle and the body slip angle velocity during drift cornering. Moreover, improvement of the cornering force characteristic, at which exceeded the maximum cornering force calm as much as possible is important.
Traction control systems are used to prevent the wheel slippage and to maximize the traction force. A new scheme of controlling the wheel slip during cornering by varying the slip ration as a function of the slip angle is proposed and dynamically simulated with the model of a front wheel driven passenger vehicle. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is superior to conventional ones based on the fixed slip ratio during cornering and lane changes.
In this paper deals with a unique method for measuring vehicle states such as body sideslip angle and tire sideslip angle using GPS velocity information in conjunction with other sensors. A method for integrating Inertial Navigation System (INS) sensors with GPS measurements to provide higher update rate estimates of the vehicle states is presented, and the method can be used to estimate the tire cornering stiffness. The experimental results for the GPS velocity-based sideslip angle measurement and cornering stiffness estimates are compared with the theoretical predictions. From the experimental results, it can be concluded that the proposed method has an advantage for future implementation in a vehicle safety system.
In this research, an effective technique was examined to improve the drift running performance. Concretely, the driver model by which the counter steer was done was assumed to the model by which the vehicle body slip angle (and the vehicle body slip angle velocity) was feed back. Next, the effectiveness of the system which added the assist steer angle corresponding to the steering wheel angle velocity to a front wheel steer angle was clarified as a drift running performance improvement technique of the vehicle. As a result, because the phase advances when the differentiation steer assistance is added, it has been understood to be able to cover the delay of the counter steer when the drift running. Therefore, it has been understood that the drift control does considerably easily. Moreover, it has been understood that the differentiation steer assistance acts effectively at the drift cornering by which the drift angle is maintained in cornering and the severe lane change with a drift at a situation. That is, it was understood to be able to settle to the drift angle of the aim quickly at the time of the drift cornering because the delay of the control steer angle of the counter steer was improved. Moreover, it was understood for the transient overshoot of the vehicle tracks to be able to decrease, and to return to the state of stability quickly at the severe lane change.
In this study, suspension geometry is controlled to improve vehicle handling performance. The toe and camber of the rear suspension is controlled independently by using a double knuckle structure designed to enhance the vehicle cornering stability. Camber and toe changes in the rear wheel during high speed turning maneuver are important factors that influence the vehicle stability. Toe in the rear outer wheel plays a dominant role in cornering. A control algorithm for the camber and the toe angle input is developed to carry out the control simulation of the vehicle such as single lane change, the steady state cornering, the double lane change and the step steering simulation. Effects of the camber and toe angle control are analyzed from the computer simulations. A double lane change simulation revealed that the suspension mechanism with variable camber angle and variable toe angle decreases the peak body slip angle and peak yaw rate, 50% and 10%, respectively.
An Intelligent active roll angle controller design algorithm is discussed. The detailed mathematical formulation and analysis are discussed, and then modeling and design method for active roll angle controller are presented. This paper proposes a design method based upon intelligent robust controller design algorithm to control actively roll angle for improving cornering performance problems. The intelligent robust controller is designed for steady speed driving vehicle system model with representation of steering angle and yaw angular velocity parameters for cornering stability. And the detailed formulation and analysis for the objective vehicle system are investigated.

In this study, a simulation tool is developed in order to investigate non steady-state cornering performance of 6WD/6WS special-purpose vehicles. 6WD vehicles are believed to have good performance on off-the-road maneuvering and to have fail-safe capabilities. But the cornering performances of 6WS vehicles are not well understood in the related literature. In this paper, 6WD/6WS vehicles are modeled as a 18 DOF system which includes non-linear vehicle dynamics, tire models, and kinematic effects. Then the vehicle model is constructed into a simulation tool using the MATLAB /SIMULINK so that input/output and vehicle parameters can be changed easily with the modulated approach. Cornering performance of the 6WS vehicle is analyzed for brake steering and pivoting, respectively. Simulation results show that cornering performance depends on the middle-wheel steering as well as front/rear wheel steering. In addition, a new 6WS control law is proposed in order to minimize the sideslip angle. Lane change simulation results demonstrate the advantage of 6WS vehicles with the proposed control law.
