Haploids are plants with a gametophytic number of chromosomes in their sporophytes. Androgenesis occurs from asymmetric division of pollen grains into generative cells and vegetative cells, followed by re-entry of the vegetative cell during S-phase, which causes microspores progress into G2/M transition in culture. One of the most interesting features of haploids is the possibility to produce doubled haploid (DH) individuals. Doubled haploidy is extremely useful to plant breeders because it enables shortened breeding periods and efficiency in selection of useful recessive agronomic traits. Doubled-haploid technology is not only applicable to breeding, but also to transformation programs of desired genes. In addition to practical breeding programs, DH lines provide useful materials of fundamental genetics including exploitation of QTLs and genes conferred with various agronomic traits by establishing DH populations. This paper provides historical overviews on androgenesis and describes several mechanisms associated with pollen embryogenesis, including mode of actions in pollen embryogenesis, mechanisms of chromosome doubling and factors affecting androgenesis. We also discuss recent progress in application of haploids to breeding, genes associated with in vitro response and drawbacks to anther culture for application of doubled haploids in crop breeding.

Androgenesis in silkworm acquires a special significance as along with combined applications of other breeding strategies like parthenogenesis and cloning, it may serve as n valuable tool for sex control in sericulture as well as selection and production of bisexual homozygous androgenetic lines. Production of hybrid silkworm yielding high proportion of male larvae is of immense use to silk industry (Strunnikov, 1975, 1983). In this review, an attempt has been made to assimilate the works carried out on androgenesis, different techniques of induction towards androgenetic development and its role in silkworm breeding.
Induced androgenesis, a form of artificial parthenogenesis is an important tool for the generation and use of genetically isogenic or clonal fish strain. An optimized protocol for the genetic inactivation of mud loach (Misgurnus mizolepis) oocytes (i.e. production of androgenetic haploid) was developed using UV-irradiation. Various dose levels of UV significantly affected the fertilizing capacity of the eggs, hatchability of embryos and incidence of haploidy. Based on the extensive examinations of treatment conditions on embryo viability and haploid incidence, the optimum dose level of UV irradiation was turned out to be $10,800ergs/mm^2$ with 56.9% of hatching success and 94.6% of haploidy. The overall yield of putative androgen under optimized treatment condition was more than 50% out of total eggs inseminated. The success of androgenetic reproduction of haploid genome was verified by flow cytometry and PCR amplification of transgene that is exclusive to either one of parental sexes. However, a small portion $(8\sim11%)$ of presumed androgenetic haploid larvae was proven to contain residual DNA fragment(s) from maternal parent.
Intraspecific diploid androgenesis was achieved in mud loach (Misgurnus mizolepis) by the inhibition of the first mitotic division using combined thermal treatment. A combined thermal treatment (heat shock at $40.5\;^{\circ}C$ for 120 sec followed by cold treatment at $1\;^{\circ}C$ for 45 min) applied to the 1st metaphase of cell division (28 min post insemination at $25\;^{\circ}C$) successfully recovered viable androgenetic diploidy. Mean hatching success of the androgenetic diploid group was 29.6%, and the average yield out of total eggs taken was about 7% assessed at 1 week of age. However, relatively large variations in the yield of diploid androgenesis were observed among different egg batches used as cytoplasmic donors. Successful diploidization was confirmed by flow cytometric analysis, and parthenogenic reproduction in a paternal exclusive manner was verified with transgene dosage. Significant mortality was found in most androgenetic groups especially from hatch to 1 month of age, although such mortality was stabilized later.

Normally, silkworms, Bombyx mori, generate offspring by sexual activity. As we known, the hybrids of the first generation of the silkworm have higher cocoon production than pure lines. During the sericulture production, many processes are related with sex control. For example, sex sorting in the egg grainages, rearing of only male silkworm to save the mulberry leaf consumption and increase silk output and quality. Therefore it is very interested in understanding the sex control of the silkworm in theory and practice. Chinese sericultural scientists have been being engaged in the researches in the fields of artificifial parthogenesis, dispermic androgenesis, sex-limited varieties, sex linkage balanced lethal strain and high temperature sensitive male stocks for several decades and gained substantial achievement. Some of the achievements have been used in the commercial production. In this review, the authors introduced that the methods for control of the silkworm sex, and regulate the silkworm sex ratio according to different producing aim in the world and especially in China.
Sexual reproduction is an essential process in the propagation of flowering plants. Recent advances in plant cell biology and biotechnology have brought new and powerful methodologies to investigate and manipulate the reproductive processes of angiosperms including agronomically important crop plants. Successful cryopreservation of maize, rye and triticale pollen and young embryos of microspore-and zygote-origine contributes to long term preservation of important plant germ-lines in gene banks. Discovering morphogenetic characteristics of the different developmental pathways taking place in wheat and maize androgenesis in vitro helps to influence the procedure to produce genetically and phenotipically stable homozygous doubled haploid plants for breeding purposes. Detailed ultrastructural and cell-biological studies on the developmental sequences of male and female gametophyte development in wheat, experimental protocols developed to isolate and micromanipulate egg cell protoplasts, make it possible to use plant gametes and the sexual route itself to produce genetically improved organisms. Plant gametes can become useful tools for crop improvement in the near future. Recent achievements by our laboratory in this field are reviewed in the present paper
This study was carried out to clarify several factors affecting embryogenesis from anther culture of nine cultivars in Brassica oleracea L. var. italica and to investigate the characteristics of plants derived from anther culture. Androgenesis from anther culture was elevated on the B5 medium supplemented with 0.1mg/L NAA, 0.1mg/L 2.4-D and 10% sucrose. Embryo production in liquid medium was five-fold higher than solid medium. High temperature treatment at 35$^{\circ}C$ for one day before transfer to culture room maintained at $25^{\circ}C$ had effective to induce embryogenesis of cultured anthers but extended treatment at 35$^{\circ}C$ decreased significantly the percent of embryogenesis. Frequency of embryogenesis from cultured anthers exhibited significant difference from 2.8% in 'Green Valiant' to 21% in 'Haisi' as affected by genotypes. Percent of spontaneously dihaploid among regenerated plants from anther culture was ranged from 62 to 74% as affected by the genotypes. Characteristic in relation to plant height, number of leaves and branches, and size of head from anther-derived plants showed differential variation in 'Rokguray' and 'Haisi'. Among these charaters obtained from two cultivars, five lines were selected for early maturity, long plant height and large head. Selected lines were used as breeding meterials for F$_1$ hybrid.
In order to investigate the effect of low temperature pretreatment on pollen dimorphism and embryo formation in anther culture of Platycodon grandiflorum, the anthers with microspore at the uninucleate stage were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 0.5mg/L NAA and 1.0 mg/L BA. The low temperature pretreatment have clear effect on the frequencies of S pollen grains, symmetrical binucleate microspores (B type of S pollen), multinucleate and multicelled pollen grains. Especially, after low temperature pretreatment at 8$^{\circ}C$ for 5 days increased the frequency of S pollen grain (20.6%) in vivo. In addition, the highest frequency of callus induction (54.9%) and embryo formation (9.9%) were obtained from the anther pretreatment at 8$^{\circ}C$ or 5 days. Three distinct pathways could be recognized in the androgenesis, one involving mainly the vegetative cell, the second starting with the vegetative and the generative cell, respectively, and the third accompaning with two equal vegetative type cells in the pollen grains.
