  • At the book I of "The Golden Mirror of Medicine[醫宗金鑑] The Elimination and Supplement about Famous Prescription Comments[刪補名醫方論]", 22 prescriptions are recorded. At the first part of the book, it mainly described about the prescriptions of invigorating Gi[補氣], which is followed by the prescriptions on enriching blood and nourishing vital essence fluid[補陰血], and the prescriptions on strengthening Gihyeol[補氣血] and tranquilization[安神] are described at the last part of the book. At the current review, the 8 prescriptions of strengthening Gihyeol[補氣血] and tranquilization[安神] of the last part of the book I will be translated, and compared with the similar related comments in the book of "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times[古今名醫方論]" to review about the characteristics of formula, prescriptions notes and the relationship of these contents. In terms of formula, the order of prescriptions to strengthen Gihyeol[補氣血] could be listed from the indirectly strengthening prescriptions to the directly strengthening prescriptions. In addition, the list of prescriptions will be sequenced by following the order of weak strengthening prescriptions to the strong strengthening prescriptions. The order of tranquilization prescription must be ordered for the symptoms showing mild psychological symptoms to severe symptoms in terms of severity of symptom, and will be ordered from the prescriptions highly dependent on invigorating Gi[補氣] to the prescriptionless dependent on invigorating Gi[補氣]. In the way of controlling Premier Fire[相火], these prescriptions are ordered from the prescriptions that use indirect methods to the prescriptions that use direct methods Characteristics of the prescription notes could be mentioned that the herbs of invigorating Gi(補氣) is pivotal in strengthening Gihyeol[補氣血] and the sour flavor and pungent flavor acted as negative and positive[陰陽的] when sour flavor and pungent flavor are used to enrich liver, and that sweet flavor could easily indigested to cause abdominal distension. When comparing with the content of "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times[古今名醫方論]", it mostly adopted the content as it is, but differentiation of the formula and addition of 2 new prescriptions with their explanation in the middle of the book could be considered to be creative aspect that helped the convenience of readers.

  • Science of prescriptions is an important part in the education of Korean Oriental Medicine. In spite of that, there is less agreement on measures for improving the education quality of science of prescriptions. Science of prescriptions can be classified into generalities and particulars. This study sought to present contents that must be incorporated into Introduction to Science of Prescriptions to enhance the quality of education by examining both teaching materials being used in colleges of traditional Chinese medicine and those of Korean oriental medicine and the Introduction part of books related with science of prescriptions. And when this study was carried out, training Korean oriental medicine practitioners and researchers and educators of science of prescriptions was taken into account. It is judged that Introduction to Science of Prescriptions needs to be divided into seven chapters and that each chapter requires containing opinions of ancient doctors and references to lay the basis of learning and revised and practical contents in addition to traditional ones. Chapter One Introduction (Conception, History, Disciplinery, Study, How to Learn, Range of Study, How to Study, Academic Activities) Chapter Two Prescriptions and Selection of Treatment Based on the Differential Diagnosis Chapter Three Prescriptions and Therapeutic Methods (Eight Therapeutic Methods, Sixty Four Therapeutic Methods etc.) Chapter Four Classification of Prescriptions Chapter Five Designing and Modification of Prescriptions (Compatibility, Designing, Modification) Chapter Six Preparation Forms of the Prescriptions (Origin, Charicteristics) Chapter Seven Methods of Decocting and Taking Korean Oriental Herbal Medicines Appendix Tables of Apothecaries' Measures and Weights in Current and Ancient Times

  • "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)" was compiled by the medical officers of the Qing government, headed by Wu-Qian(吳謙)."The Elimination &Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)", a collection of notes written by famous scholars, is one part of "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)" . Through the translation and comparative study of invigorative prescription(補氣方劑) in "The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)" of "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)" with "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modem Times(古今名醫方論)" , we confirmed that many sentences of "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times(古今名醫方論)" were quoted, but that most of the text was not quoted as the same: it was revised and supplemented. In organization, invigoration prescriptions are placed at the head of the chapter, indicating their importance. In classification, prescriptions for reinforcing middle-jiao(中焦) and replenishing qi(補中益氣湯類 方劑) were usually included in the invigoration prescriptions(補氣方劑), which is explained in chapter II, thereby clearly distinguishing between treatments of deficiency of qi(氣虛) and combining it with the sinking of qi of middle-jiao(中氣下陷).

  • Lee Jema said in his book, Dongui Susebowon, that the prescriptions for Soum constitutional type were already developed by doctors during the Song Jin Yuan China around 10th-13th century. Those prescriptions were common techniques that were used throughout the East Asian region. Among them, Lee Jema specially selected some candidate formulas and modified them according to his constitutional theory. This study investigated how similar his modified prescriptions to original formulas through database[ancient formula database] analysis. 24 out of 24 Soum prescriptions selected meaningful ingredient herbs from the original formula. A 50% or higher concordance rate compared to the original formulas. There are only 9 treatment prescriptions that cannot be checked in the ancient formula database. A future task will be to reveal the practical meanings of the ingredients Lee Jema adjusted for the Soum constitutional type patients.

  • In the 18th century, Xu Lingtai (徐靈胎) and Yoshimasu Todo (吉益東洞) were famous doctors advocating ancient medicine, though they lived in different countries, China and Japan. We compared their major books, analyzed their academic thoughts and then took conclusions as below. 1. The first, for instance "Classified Prescriptions of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, 傷寒論類方" and "Classified Assemblage of Prescriptions, 類聚方". Based on essential thought that a prescription and a syndrome should correspond, these books arranged and classified the Zhang Zhongjing (張仲景)'s texts."Classified Prescriptions of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases", based on the thought that principles, methods, formulas and medicinals (理法方藥) were integrated in prescriptions, tried to find out the implicit treatment rules in prescriptions and syndromes through analyzing "Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, 傷寒論". On the other hand, because Classified Assemblage of Prescriptions focused on the syndromes of ancient prescriptions (古方), it classified and collected the related texts of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases and "Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber, 금궤요략", and then suggested only simple instructions on how to prescribe medicine. So in this book, the trend of experience was clear. 2. The second, there is "100 Kinds Records from Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, 神農本草經百種錄" and "Description work of herbal pharmacology comprised of excerpts from Shanhanlun and medical experiences, 藥徵". Though both of these books are professional oriental pharmacology publications that advocate reactionism, there were remarkable differences in writing style between them. "Description work of herbal pharmacology comprised of excerpts from Shanhanlun and medical experiences" was based on "Treat on Cold Damage Diseases" and "Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber", just explained the effects of medications and discussed 'matter of course (所當然)', but not discussed 'the reason why (所以然)'. In explaining style of syndromes, it confirmed through research, and emphasized the inductive method. On the other hand, "100 Kinds Records from Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica based on "Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, 神農本草經", explained the nature of medications and discussed 'the reason why (所以然)'. In explaining style of syndromes, it annotated and explained, and emphasized the process of reasoning. 3. The third, there is "Discuss the Headwaters of Medicine, 醫學源流論" and Severance of Medical evils, 醫斷". Aiming the then medical theories fallen in confused state, these books brought order out of chaos, clarified the categories of medical research, and emphasized the scientific method that could put theories into practice and verify them. The difference is that "Severance of Medical Evils" researched only macroscopic viewable clinical phenomena, and even denied the existence of names of diseases and etiological causes. Thus, it emphasized the accumulation of experiences, laid emphasis on "watching and realizing (目認)", and "understand and taking in (解悟)". Discuss the Headwaters of Medicine extremely emphasized the research of 'something not occuring (未然)', that is to say, induced notions of a disease from observing clinical phenomena, furthermore based on these, predicted the 'something not occuring (未然)' and emphasized researching 'the reason why (所以然)'. As regards how they deal with the traditional theories and post-Zhang Zhongjing's medicines, "Severance of Medical evils" took completely denying attitudes. In case of "Discuss the Headwaters of Medicine", it could be used reasonably through specific situation and detailed analysis. Collectively speaking, there were some differences between medical theories of Xu Lingtai and Yoshimasu Todo. Actually, these differences were whether he tried to research the essence of disease, whether he tried to consider it rationally, and how he treated various opinions occurring in the theories of traditional medicine and clinical experience.

  • Objective : To investigate syndrome identification, herbal prescriptions, acupuncture point and other treatment, this study systematically reviewed case studies on Korean medicine (KM) treatment for urticaria. Method : Literature searches were performed on four Korean database; OASIS, RISS, KTKP and NDSL. Studies published before December 2022 were categorized and analyzed according to the herbal prescriptions. Results : Thirty-three studies including 16 case series and 17 single case reports were included in our review and the total number of patients was 523. Ancient prescriptions (古方) were used in 7 studies and prescriptions of Sasang constitutions were used in 8 studies and 18 studies used prescriptions of posterity (後世方). Wind-Heat (風熱) and syndrome identifications associated with digestive function were used frequently. Nineteen studies used acupuncture combined with herbal medicine and mainly used acupoints were ST36 (足三里), LI4 (合谷), LI11 (曲池), LR3 (太衝), SP6 (三陰交), CV12 (中脘), SP10 (血海). External herbal medicine was used in only 3 studies. Conclusion : To increase the cure rate of KM, various prescriptions should be used according to the symptom and stage of urticaria. Diversification of herbal formulations and the development of new external medicines are also necessary to conduct additional clinical studies with a high level of evidence.
