  • This study is to apply behavioral economics-an economics that studies actual human behavior based on cognitive psychology-to the farming decision-making process of onion and garlic farmers. Of behavioral economic theories, dual system theory and prospect theory (value function), heuristic and bias were surveyed and examined in the field. The reference point of farmers was farming experience of the previous year, and so they showed reference dependence and anchoring heuristic, not rational thinking on production cost plan. And they showed status quo bias that cultivated continuously the previous year or the present crop. This status quo bias is related to loss aversion propensity. Farmers did not usually change cultivating crops, in other words, they showed diminishing sensitivity-insensitive to those that the more revenue or loss was increased. This diminishing sensitivity is related to loss aversion propensity and status quo bias. Also, farmers had representativeness heuristic because they regarded auction price of Garakdong wholesale market as the standard price level despite various prices by production region. And farmers had the affect heuristic that they depended on producers' organization data more than the state-run research institute ones about cultivation intentions and actual situations.

  • Measuring method being applied for off-shore works is performed by using data logger or manual measuring instrument with wiring the cable connected from the sensor up to the position where measuring is allowed.(upper part of embankment or marine structure) Measuring management by using existing measuring method may be acceptable on the condition that the ground deformation volume(vertical, horizontal) is generally minimal and the site condition is good. But loss of measuring instrument, sensor cable failure or cutting is taken place frequently due to significant change of ground behavior caused by an external force change(embankment, excavation) under very soft ground condition(N value below 0-4). In case of the marine works, in particular, loss rate of measuring instrument is highly represented due to the factors of working barge anchoring, constructional interference and natural disaster. In order to solve these problems, measuring management was performed with employing underground wireless system at the immersed tunnel site. Measuring data was obtained freely under the marine environment by using underground wireless communication and cable cutting potential by ground behavior could be reduced. Measuring cost savings and its installation convenience were maximized by way of off-shore tower installation or cabling and by minimizing constructional interference of off-shore working barge. This case of measuring management was accomplished successfully.

  • The world-view of a period or a society refers to the way it conceives of the order and governing principles of the universe. The ad and outcome of the crealive process of a designer reflect his or her world-view or value system. Contemporary students of design seem to find the traditional approach to art based upon the Euclidean logic rather redudive and confining and are trying to develop a new way of thinking and methodology, a new frame of reference. In this study, I am offering the chaos- and fractal theory, concepts drawn from science, as a new anchoring point for design. This approach makes use of the concept of chaos as the basis of a new, open system that enables a designer to find and generate numerous visual possibilities immanent in chaos. Likewise. fractal geometry is offering new concepts and vocabularies for the study of physical universe and design thinking, as well as bridging the gap between science and art. The number of structural possibilities fractal theory generates for environmental design seems to be virtually unlimiLl'd. In fine. this study places a great emphasis on the new approaches t() the environment we inhabit. which I hope will contribute to generating a greater number of creative possibililil:s for environmental design.

  • A fundamental study of the dynamically penetrating anchor (DPA - colloquially known as torpedo anchor) embedded into deep seabed was conducted using measurement data and numerical approaches. Numerical simulation of such a structure penetration was often suffered by severe mesh distortion arising from very large soil deformation, complex contact condition and nonlinear soil behavior. In recent years, a Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method (CEL) has been used to solve geomechanical boundary value problems involving large deformations. In this study, 3D finite element analyses using the CEL formulation are carried out to simulate the construction process of dynamic anchors. Through comparisons with results of field measurements, the CEL method in the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in-situ measurements and thus, predicts a realistic large deformation movement for the dynamic anchors by free-fall dropping, which the conventional FE method cannot. Additionally, the appropriate parametric studies needed for verifying the characteristic of dynamic anchor are also discussed.

  • The mobile harbor is a new concept system to solve the problems of a port. These problems are that container ships cannot be anchored at the dock because they have become larger or the waiting times of anchoring the ships are increased due to heavy container traffic. A new system is designed to carry out the loading and unloading of containers between the mobile harbor and the container ship using the mobile harbor crane at sea. The crane plays an important role when transferring the containers. In this research, various types of the mobile harbor crane are proposed and structural optimization for each type of the crane is carried out. The loading conditions consider the rolling and pitching conditions of the unstable sea state and the wind force are considered. The constraints are mainly the regulations made by the Korean Register of Shipping. The structure of the crane is optimized to minimize the mass while various constraints are satisfied.

  • When typhoon approaches, ship normally drops her anchor at proper anchorage for sheltering. If an anchored ship is under the influence of typhoon, she can keep her position when the external force and counter force is balanced. Where, external force is induced by wind, wave and tidal currents while counter force is induced by holding power of anchor/chain and thrust force of main engine. In this study, authors presented a method to analyze theoretically the limit of external force for the ship to keep her position without being dragged and, to check the validity of the method, applied this to the ship which had been anchored in Jinhae Bay when the typhoon MAEMI passed on September 2003.

  • To ensure the safety for vessels anchored in stormy weather, duty officer and VTS operator have to frequently check whether their anchors are dragging. To judge dragging of the anchored vessel, it is important for VTS operator to recognize the turning circle and its center of the anchored vessel. The judgement for the anchored vessel dragging can be made by using Radar and AIS. If it is available, CCTV or eye-sighting can be used to know the center of turing circle. However, the VTS system collects individual ship's dynamic information from AIS and ARPA radar and monitors of the anchored vessels, it is difficult for VTS operator not only to get the detailed status information of the vessels, but also to know the center of turning circle. In this study, we propose an efficient algorithm to estimate the center of turning circle of anchored vessel by using the ship's heading and position data, which were from AIS. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, the experimental study was made for the anchored vessel under real environments.

  • Concepts of submerged floating tunnels (SFTs) for land connection have been continuously suggested and developed by several researchers and institutes. To maintain their predefined positions under various dynamic environmental loading conditions, the submerged floating tunnels should be effectively moored by reasonable mooring systems. With rational mooring systems, the design of SFTs should be confirmed to satisfy the structural safety, fatigue, and operability design criteria related to tunnel motion, internal forces, structural stresses, and the fatigue life of the main structural members. This paper presents a feasibility study of a submerged floating tunnel moored by an inclined tendon system. The basic structural concept was developed based on the concept of conventional cable-stayed bridges to minimize the seabed excavation, penetration, and anchoring work by applying tower-inclined tendon systems instead of conventional tendons with individual seabed anchors. To evaluate the structural performance of the new type of SFT, a hydrodynamic analysis was performed in the time domain using the commercial nonlinear finite element code ABAQUS-AQUA. For the main dynamic environmental loading condition, an irregular wave load was examined. A JONSWAP wave spectrum was used to generate a time-series wave-induced hydrodynamic load considering the specific significant wave height and peak period for predetermined wave conditions. By performing a time-domain hydrodynamic analysis on the submerged floating structure under irregular waves, the motional characteristics, structural stresses, and fatigue damage of the floating tunnel and mooring members were analyzed to evaluate the structural safety and fatigue performance. According to the analytical study, the suggested conceptual model for SFTs shows very good hydrodynamic structural performance. It can be concluded that the concept can be considered as a reasonable structural type of SFT.

  • By the typhoon "MAEMI" in 2003, a lot of marine accidents such as stranding, collision etc. occurred to the vessels at anchor in "JINHAE MAN" which was considered one of the most safe sheltering anchorage in Korea. These accidents resulted from the dragging of anchor by the strong winds. It needs to compare the external forces with the holding powers of anchors to estimate if the anchor will be dragged or not. However, the calculation of the force by the wind on the ship, in particular, on the wind pressure area which changes by the swinging of her bow is not yet set on a thesis. Therefore, this paper verified that how many times the front wind pressure area should be applied to calculate the force by the wind on the ship at anchor by comparing and analyzing the numerical calculation with, the actual ship's data which was really dragged by the strong wind.

  • The ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ mine has irregularly developed stratum around the ore body. The purpose of this study is to array irregular stratum thickness systematically for effective roof bolting and to implement a supporting system corresponding to it. The number of 81 cases combined with stratum thicknesses was limited to 9 cases by robust design. For each case, the load height which can act as a roof load was determined by the characteristics of stratum and RMR. The load range due to the load height is calculated assuming block shaped and arch shape. The support load of the roof bolt was considered as the average load of the two methods. Numerical analysis results of the support design showed that the cable bolt was more effective for the roof supporting fully grouted than the anchoring type. As a result of the construction, it was possible to control the roof, but all of the roof was gradually sinking downward due to the deformation of the side wall of the mine tunnel.
