  • For hydrogen management in severe accidents with degraded nuclear core of PWR's, several experiments have been performed in the SNU hydrogen mixing facility. The objectives are understanding the extent of hydrogen mixing and analyzing the effects of factors which dominate uniform or non-uniform mixing at compartments in the containment building. The facility represents on a 1/11th linearly scaled model of the YGN unit 3&4, hydrogen was simulated by helium. Because there are the gaps between safety injection tank and compartment layers in the containment, the test facility was constructed in three dimentinal mode for analyzing of mixture behavior through the gaps. From the experimental results we could conclude that overall hydrogen concentration distributed uniformly in the free volume of the test compartment, but fluctuated in the gaps. This paper is focused on experimental result from several experiment.

  • This research discussed a general concept on the qualitative research methods in mathematics education. It provided a classification of research methods in mathematics education. It also described research trends in mathematics education. It addressed how research design facilitates formulating a research problem, selecting a research design, choosing who and what to study, deciding how to approach Participants, selecting means to collect data choosing how to analyzing data, and interpreting data and applying the analysis. This study addressed the issues involved in choosing relevant populations and in selecting and sampling qualitative data. It described how populations are conceptualized and distinguished between probability sampling and criterion based selection. It discussed not only data arrangement such as, cross-sectional and categorical indexing, non-cross- sectional data organization, but also diagram flow chart matrix, cognitive map, family tree to facilitate analyzing data.

  • This paper presents a model for analyzing a firm's competitive position. The model utilizes M. Porter's Value Chain concept and develops a framework for analyzing a firm's cost structure and identifying the sources of a firm's competitive advantage. The paper first discusses the nature of a firm's competitive advantage and identifies different types of competitive advantage a firm can pursue. The paper then introduces the concepts of cost driver and its linkage as a new way of examining organizations, and develops a model for analyzng a firm's competitive advantage. Next, it illustrates detailed procedures of the model by applying it into a real world organization, and draws some strategic implications for the organization. Finally, the paper discusses the limitations of the research and suggest future related research.

  • To investigate activities in the evacuated situation of people, the measurement system is newly constructed, that composed of a wearable sensor device of heart beats rates and mobile devices like an Android smartphone with a bluetooth low energy (BLE) connection. Smartphone not only displays the heart beats variation (HBR) and the current location of evacuation person by Global Positioning System (GPS), but also exports the CSV formatted file that would be used for further analyzing the activity of person in detail. As an example of the application of this system, we show the case of evacuation routes for elderly person in Hizen-Hamashuku Area, Saga Prefecture. Using the proposed measuring system, the activities of evacuates can be clearly shown on the map of Geospatial Information System (GIS).

  • GUI program for analyzing directional spectrum waves is introduced in this paper Basically, MLM (Maximum Likelihood Method) was used for this program which was additionally consisted of performing spectral and time domain analysis for two dimensional irregular waves. Moreover, the directionality of directional spectrum waves generated by single summation and double summation method was investigated based on MLM. The directionality from each summation method has good agreement compared with that of target wave spreading function in the case of single wide directional spectrum waves. In addition to this, the resolution of directionality in double summation method was investigated as introducing coherence function between each wave component

  • In this paper, we present a novel vision-based method of recognizing finger actions for use in electronic appliance interfaces. Human skin is first detected by color and consecutive motion information. Then, fingertips are detected by a novel scale-invariant angle detection based on a variable k-cosine. Fingertip tracking is implemented by detected region-based tracking. By analyzing the contour of the tracked fingertip, fingertip parameters, such as position, thickness, and direction, are calculated. Finger actions, such as moving, clicking, and pointing, are recognized by analyzing these fingertip parameters. Experimental results show that the proposed angle detection can correctly detect fingertips, and that the recognized actions can be used for the interface with electronic appliances.

  • Video event detection has become an essential application in multimedia computing. For sports video, salient events are usually detected by analyzing video sequence by specific decision rules. However in many kinds of sports video (e.g. soccer), the game contains continuous actions, in which the boundaries of shots, scenes are uncertain. So the conventional analyzing methods using crisp decisions are not efficient. Fuzzy logic is a natural approach that can tackle this problem. In this paper, we present a new approach using fuzzy technique for event detection in soccer video. The experiment shows encouraging results for this method

  • Most of debris flow occurred in Korea have been known to be caused by the heavy rainfall at the soil deposits on the mother rock, affected by conditions of rainfall, topography and geology, especially terrain deposits. A study on debris flow behavior should be carried out by investigating various types of debris flow systematically and analyzing their complicate characteristics in the engineering view points. Tremendous debris flows occurred at Duksan-ri in Inje-gun of Gangwon province during summer in 2006. These sites are selected to study the characteristics of debris flow by investigating the influencing factors on it and analyzing their correlations between them. Most of data about influencing factors were obtained by visiting sites in field.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore characteristics of natural history museum exhibits from the viewpoint of science education. A total of ninety exhibits for this study were examined in national science museums of Korea and Japan. Exhibits of Tokyo national science museum were again divided into two groups: the old and traditional types, and the new and renovated ones. Even though analyzing data was not undertaken through quantitative statistical process, the interpretation of the data was valid enough to fulfill the purpose of the research. While there were clear changes and differences between the old and the new types of exhibits in Tokyo national science museum, the old part of Tokyo museum was similar to one in Korea. Based on analyzing the new types of Tokyo museum, the current movement in the field of natural history museums of Korea explicitly has toward utilizing more science education concepts and ideas.

  • Recently logistic regression is popular in a variety of fields so that a number of statistical packages are developed for analyzing the logistic regression. This paper briefly considers the several types of logistic regression models used depending on different types of data. In addition, when four statistical packages (MINTAB, SAS, SPSS and STATA) are used to apply logistic regression models to the real fields respectively, their scope and characteristics are investigated.
