  • This paper shows a study carried out on the estimation of nominal flexural strength for CFRP-plated RC beams failed by intermediate crack debonding. A strength reduction factor is proposed to consider the effect of the intermediate crack debonding for the determination of nominal flexural strength. The proposed factor is derived from experimental data and utilizes the ratio of effective stress(or strain) in the CFRP plate to its ultimate strength(or strain) which is called effective strain model. An analytical equation for the estimation of the nominal flexural strength is formulated as a function of strength reduction factor. The validity, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed factor are established by comparing the analytical results with the experimental data, and the major design codes, as well as a number of factors given by researchers. The analytical results presented in this paper indicate that the proposed factor can effectively estimate the flexural nominal strength of CFRP-plated reinforced concrete beams failed by intermediate crack debonding.

  • In this paper, we present the results of experimental and analytical investigations on the structural behavior of GFRP pipes used in the water supply pipeline system. Cross-section of the pipe is consisted with two GFRP tubes and polymer mortar between the tubes. Due to the advantages such as light-weight, corrosion resistance, smooth surface, flexibility, etc., use of GFRP pipe in the water supply pipeline system is ever increasing trend. Therefore, more optimized structural design methodology should be developed. In the investigation, we conducted theoretical and analytical studies on the load versus radial deformation characteristics of GFRP pipes. In addition, ring stiffness test is also performed. Test results are compared with theoretical and analytical results and it was found that the results are agreed well within 5% of radial deformation. Finally, it was also found that the GFRP pipes used in the water supply pipeline system are strong enough to satisfy the industrial requirements.

  • The study was carried out to analyze the pollutant Fe, Cu, Cr, Zn, Cd for sediments collected from lake in K river basin. Three analytical methods currently used in Korea, Japan, U.S.A, were compared. Pretreatment using microwave digestion showed higher analytical results for Fe, Cu, Cr, Zn, Cd than Korean Official Method(KOM) and American Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure(TCLP) Method. Also, analytical results using microwave digestion, TCLP and KOM were as follows: 38.1-48.0 mgFe/kg, 10.2-15.9 mgFe/kg AND 3.5-12.6 mgFe/kg, 37.0-50.1 mgCu/kg, 0.06-0.24 mgCu/kg and 0.01-0.03 mgCu/kg, 137.0-152.0 mgZn/kg, 0.67-0.82 mgZn/kg and 0.3-0.5 mgZn/kg, respectively. From this result, a new analytical method for the determination of heavy metal in sediment should be developed for the accurate estimation of pollution degree in sediment.

  • The intent of the present work was to develop a simple, sensitive, accurate, precise, rapid and economical UV- spectrophotometric and reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatographic method for the simultaneous estimation of Spironolactone and Furosemide in bulk and combined tablet dosage forms. UV-Spectrophotometry was carried out by simultaneous equation method using 0.02 M potassium dihydrogen phosphate buffer pH 3.5: Acetonitrile (50:50) v/v as a solvent. The linearity range was 2-14 ㎍ mL-1 for Spironolactone and Furosemide with a correlation coefficient > 0.99. The chromatographic separation was achieved on 250 mm × 4.6 mm, hypersil BDS C18 column with particle size 5 ㎛, by using an isocratic mixture of 0.02 M potassium dihydrogen phosphate buffer pH 3.5: Acetonitrile: tert butyl methyl ether (49:50:1) v/v/v as a solvent at a flow rate of 1 mL min-1 and UV detection was carried out at 254 nm. The retention time were observed to be 3.666 and 6.661 minutes for Furosemide and Spironolactone respectively. The two developed methods were validated according to the ICH guidelines for accuracy, precision, linearity, LOD, LOQ and were found to be within the limits. It can be concluded that these two methods could be successfully used for the simultaneous estimation of Spironolactone and Furosemide in bulk and combined tablet dosage forms.

  • Hybrid simulation (HS) has attracted community attention in recent years as an efficient and effective experimental technique for structural performance evaluation in size-limited laboratories. Traditional hybrid simulations usually take deterministic properties for their numerical substructures therefore could not account for inherent uncertainties within the engineering structures to provide probabilistic performance assessment. Reliable structural performance evaluation, therefore, calls for stochastic hybrid simulation (SHS) to explicitly account for substructure uncertainties. The experimental design of SHS is explored in this study to account for uncertainties within analytical substructures. Both computational simulation and laboratory experiments are conducted to evaluate the pseudo-random Sobol sequence for the experimental design of SHS. Meta-modeling through polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) is established from a computational simulation of a nonlinear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure to evaluate the influence of nonlinear behavior and ground motions uncertainties. A series of hybrid simulations are further conducted in the laboratory to validate the findings from computational analysis. It is shown that the Sobol sequence provides a good starting point for the experimental design of stochastic hybrid simulation. However, nonlinear structural behavior involving stiffness and strength degradation could significantly increase the number of hybrid simulations to acquire accurate statistical estimation for the structural response of interests. Compared with the statistical moments calculated directly from hybrid simulations in the laboratory, the meta-model through PCE gives more accurate estimation, therefore, providing a more effective way for uncertainty quantification.

  • While variety of cases of studies about asbestos analysis methods are released internationally, the results of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) according to differences in the method of the analysis is becoming an issue. In this study, homogeneity ensured ACM samples were analyzed by visual estimation method and point counting method, and the result cound be used not only to improve the reliability on asbestos analysis of the institutions and analysts but also to obtain the basic data of Polarizing Light Microscope (PLM) analysis by comparing and evaluating. Asbestos analysis were divided into qualitative and quantitative analysis method. The quantitative analysis was performed by visual estimation method and point counting method (total 400 points) of EPA 600-R-93-116 method by using PLM. Firstly, The following was the result of homogeneity of the samples by ANOVA (Analysis of variance) and the results were satisfied. The results of qualitative analysis showed that the samples were chrysotile and amosite, and about the results of quantitative analysis, asbestos concentration determined by point counting method tend to be lower than concentrations determined by visual estimation method and also, pont counting method was a little more complicated and time-consuming.

  • For the purpose of fault detection of the primary control surface, real-time estimation of the longitudinal stability and control derivatives of the DURUMI-II using the flight data is considered in this paper. The DURUM-II, a research UAV developed by KARI, is designed to have split control surfaces for the redundancy and to guarantee safety during the fault mode flight test. For fault mode analysis, the right elevator was deliberately fixed to the specified deflection condition. This study also mentions how to implement the multi-step control input efficiently, and how to switch between the normal mode and the fault mode during the flight test. As a realtime parameter estimation technique, Fourier transform regression method was used and the estimated data was compared with the results of the analytical method and the other available method. The aerodynamic derivatives estimated from the normal mode flight data and the fault mode data are compared and the possibility to detect the elevator fault by monitoring the control derivative estimated in real time by the computer onboard was discussed.

  • Multi-way relay networks (MWRNs) allow multiple users to exchange information with each other through a single relay terminal. MWRNs are often incorporated with capacity achieving lattice codes to enable the benefits of high-rate signal constellations to be extracted. In this paper, we analytically characterize the symbol error rate (SER) performance of a functional decode and forward (FDF) MWRN in the presence of channel estimation errors. Considering M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) with square constellations as an important special case of lattice codes, we obtain asymptotic expressions for the average SER for a user in FDF MWRN. The accuracy of the analysis at high signal-to-noise ratio is validated by comparison with the simulation results. The analysis shows that when a user decodes other users with better channel conditions than itself, the decoding user experiences better error performance. The analytical results allow system designers to accurately assess the non-trivial impact of channel estimation errors and the users' channel conditions on the SER performance of a FDF MWRN with M-QAM modulation.

  • By modeling the block matching algorithm as a function of the correlation of image blocks, we derive search patterns for fast block matching motion estimation. The proposed approach provides an analytical support lot the diamond-shape search pattern, which is widely used in fast block matching algorithms. We also propose a new fast motion estimation algorithm using adaptive search patterns and statistical properties of the object displacement. In order to select an appropriate search pattern, we exploit the relationship between the motion vector and the block differences. By changing the search pattern adaptively, we improve motion prediction accuracy while reducing required computational complexity compared to other fast block matching algorithms.

  • The classical Kalman filter (KF) provides a practical and efficient way for state estimation. It is, however, not applicable when the external excitations applied to the structures are unknown. Moreover, it is known the classical KF is only suitable for linear systems and can't handle the nonlinear cases. The aim of this paper is to extend the classical KF approach to circumvent the aforementioned limitations for the joint estimation of structural states and the unknown inputs. On the basis of the scheme of the classical KF, analytical recursive solution of an improved KF approach is derived and presented. A revised form of observation equation is obtained basing on a projection matrix. The structural states and the unknown inputs are then simultaneously estimated with limited measurements in linear or nonlinear systems. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approach is verified via a five-story shear building, a simply supported beam, and three sorts of nonlinear hysteretic structures. The shaking table tests of a five-story building structure are also employed for the validation of the robustness of the proposed approach. Numerical and experimental results show that the proposed approach can not only satisfactorily estimate structural states, but also identify unknown loadings with acceptable accuracy for both linear and nonlinear systems.
