Redescription of a Freshwater Gadid Fish, Burbot (Lota lota) in the Amnokgang River, North Korea (북한 압록강에서 채집된 대구과(Gadidae) 모오캐(Lota lota)의 재기재)

  • While an investigation on the old samples kept at collection room in National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS), we found a unique single specimen of burbot, Lota lota (54.7 cm in standard length) from Amnokgang River, North Korea on 14 April 1935. Burbot is the only stream dweller among members of the Gadiformes and found in the northern parts of Eurasia and North America. There was a little information in Korea, because it inhabits only the northern part of North Korea. This species is easily distinguished by having two dorsal fins, one anal fin, a barbel, and posterior of caudal fin rounded. This study provides detailed morphological characteristics and compares it with those of previous literatures on the North Korean L. lota.

Landform and Environment in Border Region of N. Korea and China (북중 접경 지역의 지형과 환경)

  • This study is to suggest landform and environmental problems of border region of N. Korea and China by analyzing results of field work for the Dumangang and the Amnokgang from year 2000 up to year 2016. By the social system in North korea, access of study material is possible with satellite image and published statistical data, but impossible direct data collection. We gathered field work data on landform and environment in border Region of N. Korea and China. Before field survey, we analysed geometrical landform and geology using DEM and digital geology map. We analyzed landform and environmental problems occurring in upper, midstream, and downstream region of the Dumangang and the Amnokgang using field work data. Resultingly, this study will be expected to support as basic data for resonable management on natural resources and empirical research activities on North Korea.

A Comparative Analysis of Subject Headings Related to Korean Border in the Subject Headings of Major Countries (주요 국가의 주제명표목표에 나타난 한국의 국경관련 주제명 비교 분석)

  • This research was conducted to analyze the actual condition of subject heading related to Korean border shown in the subject headings of 7 countries: United States, France, Germany, Spain, Russia, China, and Japan. The results are as follows. To begin with, Korean border-related records in most other national libraries are in extremely poor conditions except for some countries like United States. Amnokgang and Dumangang-related records did not search at all in the France. Yellow Sea, Dumangang, and Baekdusan-related records did not search at all in the Spain. Second, even Dokdo we have effective control, the geographical name 'Korea' is not marked with catalog records except the United States and France. The Germany is displayed with the geographical name of 'Korea' and 'Japan'. Third, the East Sea(Donghae) already is marked with 'Sea of Japan' in most of the national library catalogs, and Yellow Sea(Huanghai) is marked with 'Yellow Sea'. Fourth, Amnokgang and Dumangang is marked with Chinese pronunciation in most in most of the national library. Fifth, Baekdusan is marked with Korean pronunciation in most countries. However the United States showed in 'Baekdu Mountain' and 'Changbai Mountain' discrimination. In the case of the Germany, 'Changbai Mountain' are marked with variant access point of 'Baekdusan'.

Comparative Analysis of Cataloging Record Related to Korea in the National Libraries of the Main Developing Countries - Focused on 12 Europe and South America Countries - (주요 개발도상국의 국가도서관에 있어 한국관련 목록레코드 비교 분석 - 유럽 및 남미지역 12개국을 중심으로 -)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of records related to Korea shown in the cataloging records of national libraries of the main 12 developing countries in Europe and South America. The results are as follows. To begin with, Korea-related records in most national libraries are very poor and under 0.01% of the library. Second, Korean materials usually write Korean in Roman characters except for National Library of Armenia, but there are not marked with the original Korean language and unfeasible Hangeul search. Third, on investigation of the subject distribution in sub criteria of Korea-related records, subject related to history, politics, and economy is largely shown in the highest rate. Fifth, among the Korea-related subject heading, Taekwondo is marked with distinction from Karate in most libraries except for National Library of Argentina. Dokdo is marked with the geographical name of 'Korea' in 8 national libraries and East Sea (Donghae) already is marked with 'Sea of Japan' in 7 national libraries. Amnokgang, Dumangang, and Baekdusan-related records did not search at all in most national libraries.

A Preliminary Study for Predicting a Damage Range of Pyroclastic Flows, Lahars, and Volcanic Flood caused by Mt. Baekdusan Eruption (백두산 분화에 따른 화쇄류, 화산이류, 화산성 홍수의 피해범위 예측을 위한 예비연구)

  • Products of the eruption of Mt. Baekdusan are identified as volcanic materials at the estuaries of the Songhuagang river to north, the Dumangang river to east and the Amnokgang river to west. More speficially, pyroclastic flows, lahars and volcanic floods can affect an area of 400km in radius, centering around Lake Cheonji caldera. However, unlike the millenium eruption, the flow situation has been changed. Because multi-purpose dams and reserviors with a combined pondage of mora than 2 billion tons of water have been built in the rivers of which sources are originated from Lake Cheonji caldera. In addition, the flow of fluids expected to take place when the volcano has erupted is thought to be affected by artificial constructions in both direct and indirect ways. This study calculates the direction of fluids flow by using numerical analyses of pyroclastic flows, lahars and volcanic floods that can occur when the volcano of Mt. Baekdusan has erupted. We also estimate the scope of damages by pyroclastic flows, lahars, volcanic flooding caused by the pondage of the dams and water storages in and around Mt. Baekdusan. Pyroclastic flows transported over the steep slopes at the early times of eruptions move over the mountain slopes, affecting airplanes, and lahars due to leaks of Lake Cheonji could reach as far as major rivers and streams near Mt. Baekdusan. Unlike historical accounts, volcanic flood is expected to be limited in its scope of influence to reservoirs bigger than Lake Cheonji in pondage.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of records related to Korea shown in the cataloging records of national libraries of the main 10 developing countries in Asia and Africa. The results are as follows. To begin with, Korea-related records in most national libraries are very poor and under 0.1% of the library. Except for National Library of Viet Nam, the figure is under 3,000 volumes and generally 2 times less than Japan related records. Second, except for National Library of Iran and Viet Nam most national libraries romanize Korean materials, there are not marked with the original Korean language and unfeasible Hangeul search. Third, on investigation of the subject distribution in sub criteria of Korea-related records, subject related to history and economy is largely shown in the highest rate. Fifth, among the Korea-related subject heading, Taekwondo is marked with distinction from Karate in most libraries except for 7 national libraries.   • This study aims to assess the influence of climate change on the hydrological cycle at a basin level in North Korea. The selected model for this study is MRI-CGCM 3, the one used for the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). Moreover, this study adopted the Spatial Disaggregation-Quantile Delta Mapping (SDQDM), which is one of the stochastic downscaling techniques, to conduct the bias correction for climate change scenarios. The comparison between the preapplication and postapplication of the SDQDM supported the study's review on the technique's validity. In addition, as this study determined the influence of climate change on the hydrological cycle, it also observed the runoff in North Korea. In predicting such influence, parameters of a runoff model used for the analysis should be optimized. However, North Korea is classified as an ungauged region for its political characteristics, and it was difficult to collect the country's runoff observation data. Hence, the study selected 16 basins with secured high-quality runoff data, and the M-RAT model's optimized parameters were calculated. The study also analyzed the correlation among variables for basin characteristics to consider multicollinearity. Then, based on a phased regression analysis, the study developed an equation to calculate parameters for ungauged basin areas. To verify the equation, the study assumed the Osipcheon River, Namdaecheon Stream, Yongdang Reservoir, and Yonggang Stream as ungauged basin areas and conducted cross-validation. As a result, for all the four basin areas, high efficiency was confirmed with the efficiency coefficients of 0.8 or higher. The study used climate change scenarios and parameters of the estimated runoff model to assess the changes in hydrological cycle processes at a basin level from climate change in the Amnokgang River of North Korea. The results showed that climate change would lead to an increase in precipitation, and the corresponding rise in temperature is predicted to cause elevating evapotranspiration. However, it was found that the storage capacity in the basin decreased. The result of the analysis on flow duration indicated a decrease in flow on the 95th day; an increase in the drought flow during the periods of Future 1 and Future 2; and an increase in both flows for the period of Future 3.

GIS-based review of Goguryeo's defense system during the Gungnaeseong Period with the focus on the upper and middle reaches of the Amnok River and the mid-stream region of the Liohe River (GIS를 활용한 고구려 국내성 시기의 관방체계 검토 - 압록강 중상류~요하 중류를 중심으로 -)

  • The Goguryeo kingdom established a unique defense system centered on a series of mountain fortresses. However, modern-day studies on its defense system have tended to focus on how they were positioned and generally consist of little more than individual surveys or introductions to the relevant materials, leaving much to be desired. This study attempts to extend the scope of studies about fortresses dating back to the Goguryeo period, taking into account the limitations of the available materials. As such, this study reviews the defense system of Goguryeo during the Gungnaeseong Period (i.e., the period when Gungnaeseong was the capital of Goguryeo) using the GIS system, with the focus on fortresses that are thought to have been built in the area extending from the middle and upper reaches of the Amnok River to the mid-stream region of the Liohe River, based on the aforementioned studies. The results of the study are as follows. First, the major roads built during the Gungnaeseong Period were as stated in the foregoing studies to some extent. Researchers believed that during the middle period of the dynasty, a major road ran along the Suzihe, Fuer and Xinkai rivers before finally reaching Jian. The study found that fortified walls and fortress strongholds were built along this road. Second, there were seven fortresses between the middle and upper reaches of the Amnokgang River and the midstream region of the Liaohe River. A primary defense line was closely established between the strongholds and the nearby walls, with secondary and tertiary defense lines established more loosely and encompassing a much wider area. Third, regarding the defense system along the major roads, the Choejinbosanseong, Goisanseong and Cheolbaesanseong fortresses served as strongholds along the 60-kilometer-long primary defense line, with 80-kilometer-long secondary and tertiary defense lines set up behind it. The final 120-kilometer-long defense line of the capital was established along with the Onyeosanseong Fortress, while a stumbling block was set up close to the capital as a defense system, rather than building a fortified wall. To summarize, a primary defense system was established centered on a series of fortresses, with each stronghold maintaining a closely-knit defense system in connection with other nearby strongholds to repel invaders.
