  • Polyimide (PI) multilayer thin films were prepared by spin-coating from a poly(amic acid) (PAA) and poly(amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAS). PI was prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) PAA. Different compositions of PAAS were prepared by incorporating triethylamine (TEA) into PMDA-ODA PAA in dimethylacetamide. PI multilayer thin films were spin-coated from PMDA-ODA PAA and PAAS. The PAAS comprising cationic and anionic moieties were spherical with a particle size of $20{\sim}40\;nm$. Some particles showed layers with ammonium salts, despite poor ordering. Too much salt obstructed the interaction between the polymer chains and caused phase separation. A small amount of salt did not affect the interactions of the interlayer structure but did interrupt the stacking between chains. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the average decomposition temperature of the thin films was $611^{\circ}C$. All the films showed almost single-step, thermal decomposition behavior. The nanostructure of the multilayer thin films was confirmed by X -ray reflectivity (XRR). The LF 43 film, which was prepared with a 4:3 molar ratio of PMDA and ODA, was comprised of uniformly spherical PAAS particles that influenced the nanostructure of the interlayer by increasing the interaction forces. This result was supported by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) data. It was concluded that the relationship between the uniformity of the PAAS particle shapes and the interaction between the layers affected the optical and thermal properties of PI layered films.

  • The relationship between soluble salts and microbial growth on stone surface was investigated. Samples from deteriorated surface layers of several stone monuments were collected, and the soluble salts in samples were chemically analysed. According to the results of chemical analyses, $Na_2SO_4$, $CaSO_4$ $2H_2O$, and NaCl and so on were added to isolation media. As a result of preliminary experiments, 15 bacteria were selected. They are all Gram positives and fourteen of them were rods. Every bacteria could grow not only in media without salts, but also in media with $CaCO_3$, $CaSO_4$ $2H_2O$, and $Ca(OH)_2$. Three bacteria, Bl6, B56, and B6l, secreted viscous substances in these $Ca^{2+}$ added media. $CaCl_2$ $2H_2O$ was the most hygroscopic among 11 soluble salts, but it seemed to interfere with bacterial growth. Ammonium ion was the inhibitor, too.

  • Atmospheric fine particles $(PM_{2.5})$ were collected at the background sites, Kangwha, Taean, and Kosan and characterized to understand their behaviors at the sites. Daily samples of $PM_{2.5}$ mass were measured and ionic species, carbonaceous species, and gaseous species were analyzed. Four-day backward trajectory analysis was also carried out. The mean concentrations of anthropogenic species were highest at Kangwha among three sites, while contributions from sea salts wree highest at Taean during the measurement period due to higher wind speed at Taean. Major chemical components in fine particles were sulfate, organic carbon, nitrate, and ammoniu. Most of the non-sea-salt (nss) sulfates in $PM_{2.5}$ might be present as ammonium sulfates at these sites. Most air parcels arriving at Kangwha and Taean were from northern China. Therefore, both sites were thought to be affected by the same air parcel. At Kosan, during the measurement period, air parcels were from either northern China or sourthern China. The nss sulfate concentration in the air parcels from southern China was higher, while the nss calcium, nitrate, and ammonium concentrations were higher when the air parcels were from northern China.

  • The distribution of $^{55}$ Mn and $^{38}$ Cl recoil species following radiative neutron capture in permanganates, chlorates and perchlorates has been investigated by using ion-exchange chromatography method. The whole of the $^{55}$ Mn radioactivity in permanganates appeared in two valence states, the $^{38}$ Cl radioactivity in chlorates in two valence states and also the $^{38}$ Cl radioactivity in perchlorates in three valence states. Recoil energy was calculated. The internal conversion of $^{38}$ Cl isomer transition affects the retention value. The greater the radii of the cation, the higher is the probability of the recoil atom breaking through the secondary cage. In ammonium salt, the ammonium ion behaves as a reducing agent. Crystal structures with their greater free space have shown low retention.

  • An analytical method for particulate carbon and other elements by using elemental analyzer was investigated. Carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen was determined as CO$_{2}$, H$_{2}$, and N$_{2}$, respectively. Organic was determined after scparation from elemental carbon(Cae) by volatilization and thermal decomposition in a heated helium flow. With organic materials examined in this reprot, more than 90% of carbon was detected as above 600$^{\circ}$C. But it is considered that a few percents of some compounds were charred above 550$^{\circ}$C. A small amount of Cae was oxidized in the inert atmosphere above 850$^{\circ}$C, but the reason was not explained clearly. Based on the thermal chracteristics of Cao it was found that the optimum temperature of heating in the helium flow of an elemental analyzer for Cao analysis is 630$^{\circ}$C. Carbon in a sample after removing Cao was assumed as Cae and the gramatom ratio of hydrogen to carbon in the sample was 0.4 and less. Rescovery of nitrogen derived from some ammonium salts and nitrates was 100% by two-step measurement with elemental analyzer. By the analytical method investigated in this report, carbon and other elements in suspended particulates(S.P) collected at an urban area in Seoul were measured. There was a good correlation between total nitrogen in SP measured by elemental analyzer and nitrogen estimated form ammonium ions and nitrate ions in SP. The nitrogen from these ions accounts for 80% of the total nitrogen. It is further suggested that the residue(20%) of the total nitrogen is attributed to the other nitrogeneous compounds.

  • The reaction between cyanide ion and triphenyl methane dyes is subject to marked catalysis by cationic micelles of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide(CTABr) and retarded by anionic micelles of sodium lauryl sulfate(NaLS). Added salts, anions inhibit the catalysis by CTABr, and cations, especially $Zn^{++},\;Cd^{++}$ decrease the retardation of the reaction rates in the presence of NaLS. The kinetic effects of the ionic micelles are much larger in water than in ethanol-water, methanol-water, propanol-water and acetone-water, but strange solvent effects, acceleration the reaction rates, was found in the reaction with malachite green in water-methanol system.

  • Clavulanic acid (CA) produced by Streptomyces clavuligerus is degraded during the bacterial cultivation. The degradation was examined in three different aspects, including physical, chemical, and enzymatic effects, in order to understand the degradation during the cultivation. The result showed that CA was unstable in the production medium containing ammonium salts and amino acids, owing to ammonium ions and amine groups. In addition, the degradation was not only due to instability of CA by metabolites and proteins, but also enzymes from S. clavuligerus such as $\beta-lactamase$ and penicillin-binding proteins. However, the degradation caused by these enzymes was not highly significant compared with the degradation during the cultivation, owing to irreversible reactions between CA and enzymes.

  • The PVC membrane electrode for measuring perchlorate ion was developed by incorporating various quaternary ammonium sallts. The effect of chemical structure, the content of active material, the kind of plasticizers, and the membrane thickness on the electrode characteristic such as the linear response range and Nernstian slope of the electrode were studied. It was obtained that the effect of the chemical structure of an active material on the electrode characteristics was improved with increasing the alkyl chain length of the quarternary ammonium salts in the ascending order of Aliquat 336P, TOAP, TDAP, and TDDAP. The optimum membrane composition was 9.09wt% of TDDAP, 30.3wt% of PVC, and 60.6wt% of plasticizer(DBP). And the optimum membrane thickness was 0.45mm at this composition. Under the above condition, the linear response range was $10^{-1}~1.2\times10^{-6}$M, and the detection limit was $5.1\times10^{-7}$M with the Nernstian slope of 57mV/decade of activity of perchlorate ion. The electrode potential was stable within the pH range from 4 to 11. The selectivity coefficient was as shown below: $SCN^->I^-NO_3^->Br^->ClO_3^->F^->Cl^->SO_4^{2-}$

  • A colorless antistatic agent was prepared for use in antistatic films for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) requiring low surface resistance and high transmittance. Among various lithium-fluoro compounds and quaternary ammonium salts, antistatic materials were selected based on their electrical conductivity, and antistatic agents were prepared to measure the surface resistance. As a result, the material with high conductivity showed a relatively low surface resistance, i.e., relatively good antistatic performance. Based on the antistatic materials selected, the formulation ratio for producing the best antistatic agent was established through the experimental design method and the effects of each factor were analyzed. The higher the use of lithium- fluoro compounds as antistatic materials, the higher the ratio of oligomer use with multi-functional groups, and the smaller the surface resistance. The quaternary ammonium salts increased the antistatic performance of the lithium-fluoro compounds, but the effects of the amount used were not relatively large. After manufacturing the antistatic PET film, the properties of the antistatic film showed low surface resistance values (<109 Ω/sq.), high permeability (>92%), low haze (<0.5%), and high whiteness (L>95). In addition, the antistatic film reliability was found to be excellent by showing a stable surface-resistance change rate of less than 10%, even under high temperature and high humidity conditions.

  • $NH_4{^+}-{\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-alumina which is expected to an inorganic solid electrolyte of high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) was prepared by ion-exchange reaction of $K^{+}-{\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-alumina pellet with $NH_4NO_3$ aqueous solution and molten $NH_4NO_3$ salts as an ion-exchange medium in the autoclave and the heating mentle reaction. In the autoclave reaction, the concentrations of $NH_4NO_3$ solution was chosen at 5 and 10 M. Each ion-exchange reaction was carried out at 130, 150, 170, and $200^{\circ}C$ for 2, 4, 6 and 8 h. In the heating mentle reaction, ion-exchange was performed at $200^{\circ}C$ for 2, 4, 6 and 8 h with molten $NH_4NO_3$ salts. In order to determine the effect of reaction times, each ion-exchange reaction was repeated 3 times. The phase stability and the ion-exchange rate of $NH_4{^+}-{\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-alumina were analyzed by XRD and ICP.
