  • Purpose: Since the food wastewater contains a high concentration of nitrogen, it is very important to find a way to efficiently remove it. Research design, data and methodology: A total of four experiments were conducted under different conditions to remove ammonia nitrogen present in the food wastewater. The experiment was designed by adding sodium hypochlorite to the raw food wastewater and varying conditions such as pH control, aeration/precipitation, and stirring. Results: The ammonia nitrogen removal rate in Experiment 1 was about 12% (sodium hypochlorite added), ammonia nitrogen increased about 4.7% in Experiment 2 (sodium hypochlorite added after aeration/precipitation in a bioreaction tank, stirring), and decreased about 52.5% (sodium hypochlorite added after controlling and stirring). Conclusions: When the concentration of sodium hypochlorite was high, ammonia nitrogen was best removed, and the pH was adjusted to 12, and sodium hypochlorite was added after stirring, and the removal was the second best. If the method of this study is further studied and developed, it can be basic data for ammonia nitrogen removal in the future.

  • This study was focused to find how each factors effect on the biological nitrification in wastewater treatment under high ammonia nitrogen concentration. Batch reactors in aerobic conditions were used to test the treatment efficiency of mixed liquor, nightsoil and piggery wastewater. The results are summeried as follows; Initial ammonia nitrogen concentration and pH were the direct influencing factors of nitrite build-up. More than 250 mg NH$_{4}$$^{+}$ - N/L in initial concentration built up nitrite and then the inhibition rate to Nitrobacter was above 70 percentage. And maximum nitritation rate was showed at pH 8.3 and nitrification could be completely achieved by pH control. Temperature and dissolved oxygen were the indirect influencing factors of nitrite build-up. These were a great effect on the activity of nitrifying microbes and ammonia nitrogen removal. Maximum nitritation rate was showed at 30 $\circ $C. The effect of DO concentration was negligible at more than 3 mg/L.

  • A study on the screening and isolation of microorganism was performed for the removal of main malodor, such as ammonia, produced from the livestock farm. The main malodor components in livestock farm are ammonia, volatile fatty acids, sulfur compounds and trimethylamine. Damages to man and livestock were originated from malodors mainly due to ammonia, and thus ammonia reduction experiments were performed. Sludge of sewage treatment plant was inoculated in the sesame dregs culture, from which ammonia gas was produced. An aerobically grown, pure cultured isolated from the 10th enrichment culture was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing and identified as Alcaligenes sp. NS-1. This strain NS-1 precultured in the sesame dregs was found to remove ammonia gas with an efficiency of approximately 99-100% at an average concentration of 40 ppmv of ammonia gas. When the strain NS-1 sprayed to pig excrements, the removal efficiency at an average concentration of 100 ppmv of ammonia was approximately 60% after 16 hr.

  • Ammonia in water which is toxic to human, its concentration is regulated below 0.5 mg/L in drinking water. Current study aimed to develop appropriate models for ammonia stripping using hollow fiber membrane contactor. Two different models were developed during the study. Model 1 was assumed only free ammonia ($NH_3$) transfer in stripping process, whereas the Model 2 was assumed with total ammonia ($NH_3+{NH_4}^+$) transfer. Ammonium chloride ($NH_4CI$), sodium hydroxide(NaOH) were used to make ammonia solution, which was concentration of 25 mg as N/L at a pH of 10.5. The experimental conditions were such that, the liquid flow was in tube-side in upward direction and t he gas flow was on shell-side in downward direction a t room temperature. The experimental and modeling results showed that marginal difference were observed at low gas flux. However the difference between the both models and experimental value were increased when the gas flux was increased. The study concludes that the Model 1 with free ammonia is more appropriate when both models were compared and useful in ammonia stripping process at low gas flux.

  • We isolated and identified a microorganism which was excellent for ammonia oxidation in the biological control of ammonia gas in odor producing materials from organic composting. The isolated strain was tested for growth characteristics and ammonia elimination efficiency under various conditions of temperature, pH, carbon concentration and ammonia concentration. The strain was isolated from a culture broth used in a $NO_2$ producing test with Griess-Ilosvay reagent. The results of 16S rRNA sequence from the isolated strain by using BLANST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) and confirming RDP (Ribosomal Database Project II) and ERRD (The European Ribosomal RNA Database) indicate that the strain is related to Delftia sp. UV-Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu, UVmini-1240) was used as a microbial growth test by measuring turbidity on OD660nm and ammonia concentration was measured by Spectrophotometer (HACH, DR-4000). The optimum growth culture conditions of the ammonia oxidizer Delftia sp. were $30^{\circ}C$, pH 7, glucose concentration 1.00% and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ 0.5 g/l. Ammonia elimination efficiency was over 94% under the same conditions.

  • To evaluate the feasibility of electrodialysis for ammonia nitrogen removal from wastewater, the effects of operating parameters such as diluate concentration, applied voltage and flow rate on the removal of ammonia nitrogen were experimentally estimated. The removal rate was evaluated by measuring the elapsed time for ammonia nitrogen concentration of diluate to reach 20 mg/L. Limiting current density (LCD) linearly increased with ammonia nitrogen concentration and flow rate. The elapsed time was linearly proportional to initial concentration of diluate. Due to relatively large equivalent ion conductivity and ion mobility of ammonia nitrogen, the removal rate increased consistently with flow rate. Increase in the applied voltage gave positive effect to removal rate. From the operation of the electrodialysis module used in this research, the flow rate of 3.2 L/min and 80~90% of applied voltage for LCD are recommended as the optimum operating condition for the removal from high concentrate ammonia nitrogen solution.

  • For an integrated nitrification-denitrification process, nitrite formation in the aerobic stage leads to big savings. Dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature, pH and free ammonia concentration have been meet for nitrite accumulation. Also their effects over the ammonia oxidizers and nitrite oxidizers have been studied. Dissolved oxygen limitation and free ammonia inhibition led to slow nitrification and nitrite build up. In this study batch kinetics of ammonium and nitrite oxidations were performed with free ammonia accumulated nitrifiers. From the results it is likely the nitrite oxidizers are inhibited by oxygen limitation rather than free ammonia.

  • The ammonia-water based power generation cycle utilizing liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its heat sink has attracted much attention, since the ammonia-water cycle has many thermodynamic advantages in conversion of low-grade heat source in the form of sensible energy and LNG has a great cold energy. In this paper, we carry out thermodynamic performance analysis of a combined power generation cycle which is consisted of an ammonia-water regenerative Rankine cycle and LNG power generation cycle. LNG is able to condense the ammonia-water mixture at a very low condensing temperature in a heat exchanger, which leads to an increased power output. Based on the thermodynamic models, the effects of the key parameters such as source temperature, ammonia concentration and turbine inlet pressure on the characteristics of system are throughly investigated. The results show that the thermodynamic performance of the ammonia-water power generation cycle can be improved by the LNG cold energy and there exist an optimum ammonia concentration to reach the maximum system net work production.

  • In this study, the membrane degassing process of the sweep gas - vacuum combination type was proposed for ammonia wastewater treatment. The effect of pH, initial ammonia concentration and scale-up on ammonia degassing performance was investigated. As a result, as the pH and the initial ammonia concentration increased, the degassing permeate flux was improved. On the other hand, the ammonia mass transfer coefficient increased as the initial ammonia reduced, which seems to be due to the driving force of the sweep gas-vacuum combination type membrane degassing system proposed in this study. In addition, 80 mg NH3/min of the ammonia degassing rate was achieved using a 6×28 inch size module. Better degassing performance is expected if consideration for maintaining vacuum pressure is involved in the scale-up design.

  • Behaviors of simple organic compound and granular sludge in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating propionate at high ammonia nitrogen levels were investigated for 12 months. The UASB reactor achieved about 80% removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) at ammonia nitrogen concentration up to 6000 mg-N/L. At higher concentration of ammonia nitrogen, the propionate in the effluent increased whereas the acetate was very low. At ammonia nitrogen concentration of 8000 mg-N/L, the volatile suspended solids (VSS) increased sharply due probably to the decrease of the content of extracellular polymer (ECP) although methane production was very low. The specific methanogenic activity (SMA) using formate, acetate, and propionate as substrate to granules decreased as ammonia nitrogen concentration increased. The ammonia nitrogen concentration $I^{50}$, causing 50% inhibition of SMA were 2666, 4778 and 5572 mg-N/L, respectively. The kinetic coefficients of ammonia inhibition using formate, acetate, and propionate as substrate were 3.279, 0.999 and 0.609, respectively. The SMA using formate was severely affected by ammonia nitrogen than those using acetate and propionate. This result indicated that the hydrogenotrophic methanogens was most affected by ammonia nitrogen. Granules were mainly composed of microcolonies of methanothrix-like bacteria resembling bamboo-shape, and several other microcolonies including propionate degrader with juxtapositioned syntrophic associations between the hydrogen-producing acetogens and hydrogen-consuming methanogens.
