Aqueous ammonia is widely used in household cleaners, fertilizers and denitrification process. It is usually treated in concentrations from 10 % to 30 %, and release accidents have occurred frequently. In this study, we developed a simplified estimating method and equation to calculate threat zone easily in case of emergency due to release accident of aqueous ammonia. We calculated the consequence distance for toxic endpoints of aqueous ammonia(concentration 10 % ~ 30 %) at different puddle areas($1m^2{\sim}500m^2$) using the ALOHA program. Based on the result, we analyzed the relationship between concentration and puddle area with the threat zone and created the equation.

The study was carried out to develop the real time measuring technique of ammonia and carbon dioxide concentration emitted from growing-finishing pig house in winter and estimate ammonia emission rate emitted from the pig house. As the study was carried out, environmental management technique for the pig house and odor abatement skill could be properly developed to reduce the residence's annoyance. The room temperature of the growing-finishing pig house was $10^{\circ}C$ higher than outdoor air temperature in spite of additional heating, because of heat emitted from body temperature of the pigs. The daily variation pattern of room temperature in the pig house shows the similar tendency with outdoor air temperature. The daily mean ventilation rate per head was $16\;m^3/h$ and ranged from $12\;m^3/h$ to $22.4\;m^3/h$. The difference of day and night for ventilation rate was about 2 times. The ammonia emission rate was $208{\pm}28\;mg/h{\cdot}pig$ per daily basics calculated with ventilation rate and ammonia concentration.
Six pig farms were surveyed to measure the odor concentrations and characteristics of ammonia and sulfide corollary compounds in piggery. They were depended on the scale of piggery, weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, scales and types of pig breeding, and manure treatment methods. The highest ammonia concentrations in piggery were measured during the winter, since the tight sealed insulation in piggery made less amount of generated ammonia discharged from piggery. The objective of this study was to measure concentrations of odor in the piggery by season and growing, and to measure concentrations of odor at boundary area. So, we investigated the raising managements, manure managements, and methods of reducing odor according to farm scale. We found that concentration of ammonia gas in the swine fattening piggery in winter was the highest. This result is consistent with the lower ventilation rate to maintain Indoor temperature. In this result, there was no connection between farm scale and ventilating system. Concentration of ammonia gas was 1.64 ppm at one boundary area in the middle scale. $H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, $(CH_3)_2S$, and $(CH_3)_2S_2$ were below the standard of protection odor policy.

The complete oxidation of ammonia to nitrate is a distinctive two-step process divided into the oxidation of ammonia to nitrite(nitritation) by Nitrosomonas and the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate(nitratation) by Nitrobacter. The nitrogen removal via nitrite accumulation offers several advantages such as saving costs for aeration, saving carbon source and finally reduction of sludge discharge. In this work a suspended bioreactor coupled with membrane filtration(MBR) was used to find the process conditions of nitrite build-up. The MBR enables to reach sufficient nitrifying bacteria in the bioreactor, although the autotrophic bacteria can be easily washed out due to their lower growth rate. The dissolved oxygen concentration $c'_{O2}$ and ammonia concentration $c_{NH3}$ in the reactor were varied and investigated as parameters for nitrite accumulation. As a result the higher ammonia concentration in the reactor is very effective for starting nitrite build-up and the effect was strengthened in combination with lower dissolved oxygen concentration. With lower $c'_{O2}<0.3$$mgL^{-1}$$O_2$ and high $c_{NH3}=6.3\sim14.9$$mgL^{-1}$$NH_3N$ the 74% of the nitrite accumulation was achieved. Specially, it was found that the nitrite accumulation could occur not only in biofilm reactor as many references showed but also in the membrane bioreactor carried out in this study.

The engineering aspect of water treatment processes in the recirculating aquaculture system was studied. To recycle the water in the aquaculture system, a wastewater treatment process was required to maintain high water quality for the growth and health of the cultured fish. In this study, three different biofilm processes were used to reduce the concentration of organic matters and ammonia from the recirculating water - two phase fluidized bed, three phase fluidized bed, and trickling filter. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the optimum treatment conditions of the biofilm processes for the recirculating aquaculture system, and thereby reduce the volume of biofilm processes, which are commonly used for the recycle water treatment processes for aquaculture. The result of this study showed that the removal efficiency of organic matters by trickling filter was found to be lower than that of the fluidized bed. In the trickling filter system, anthracite showed better organic removal efficiency than crushed stone as a media. In the two phase fluidized bed, the maximum removal efficiency of either organics or ammonia was obtained when both the packing rate of media was maintained to $40\%$ of total reactor depth excepting sediment zone and the bed expansion rate was maintained to $100\%$. When 100 tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) of each average 200g was reared, the pollutant production rate was 0.07g $NH_4\;^+-N/kg$ fish/day and 0.06g P04-3-P/kg fish/day, and sludge production rate was 0.39 g SS/kg fish/day. In the two phase and three phase fluidized bed, the volume of water treatment tank could be calculated from an empirical equation by using the relationship between the influent COD to $NH_4\;^+-N$ ratio (C/N, -), media concentration (Cm, g/L), influent ammonia nitrogen concentration (Ni, mg/L), effluent ammonia nitrogen concentration (Ne, mg/L), bed expansion rate $(E,\;\%)$, and influent flowrate $(Q,\;m^3/hr)$. The empirical equation from this study is $$V_2\;=\;10^{3.1279}\;C/N^{3.5461}\;C_m\;^{-3.7473}\;N_i\;^{4.6477}\;E^{0.0326}\;N_e\;^{-0..8849}\;Q\;(Two\;Phase\;FB) V_3\;=\;10^{11.7507}\;C/N^{-1.2330}\;C_m\;^{-6.5715}\;N_i\;^{1.5091}\;N_e\;^{-1.8489}\;Q (Three\;Phase\;FB)$$

Experiments were conducted to examine the differences in ammonia removal rates with the different filter media between sand and zeolite, the expanding rates between $50\%$ and $100\%$, the water temperatures between $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, and the ammonia loading rates between 2 mg/L and 5 mg/L in the seawater fluidized bed filters system (FBF). The 2.1 m high FBF (8.3 cm diameter) consisted of the clear acrylic for the upper half and a PVC pipe for the lower half, Sand and zeolite were used as the filter media in sizes of 0.5$\pm$0.1mm. Each biofilter contained 5.4 L of media. The ammonia removal rates of the biofilter were higher at the $25^{\circ}C$ water temperature than those of the biofilter at $15^{\circ}C$ water temperature, and higher at the $50\%$ expanding rate of filter media than those of the biofilter at $100\%$ expanding rate of filter media. Also, the ammonia removal rates of FBF were higher at 5 mg/L ammonia concentration than those of FBF at 2 mg/L ammonia concentration in rearing water. With these better conditions the ammonia removal rates of FBF per day are practically acceptable and ranged ken 80.6 to $210.6g/m^3$.
Nitrifier consortium immobilized in Ca and Ba-alginate beads were packed into two bioreactors and the performances of bioreactors were evaluated for the removal of ammonia nitrogen from synthetic aquaculture water. The total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentration of the influent was continually kept about 2g TAN/㎥. At the HRT of 0.6hr, ammonia nitrogen removal rate of two bioreactors were about 52.6 and 51.0g TAN/$\textrm{m}^3$/day, respectively. At the respect of ammonia nitrogen removal, two bioreactor showed the similar abilities. The second trial with nitrifier consortium immobilized in Ca-alginate bead was carried out to evaluate the ammonia nitrogen removal rate for 35 days. The highest ammonia nitrogen removal rate was 82g TAN/$\textrm{m}^3$ when HRT was about 0.3hr.
The effects of daily dietary Bacillus subtilis (Bs), and adding L-tryptophan, fructan, or casein to fecal fermentation broths were investigated as means to reduce the production of noxious gas during manure fermentation caused by ammonia, hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), and 3-methylindole (skatole). Eighty swine ($50.0{\pm}0.5kg$) were equally apportioned to an experimental group given Bs in daily feed, or a control group without Bs. After 6 weeks, fresh manure was collected from both groups for fermentation studies using a $3{\times}3$ orthogonal array, in which tryptophan, casein, and fructan were added at various concentrations. After fermentation, the ammonia, $H_2S$, L-tryptophan, skatole, and microflora were measured. In both groups, L-tryptophan was the principle additive increasing skatole production, with significant correlation (r = 0.9992). L-tryptophan had no effect on the production of ammonia, $H_2S$, or skatole in animals fed Bs. In both groups, fructan was the principle additive that reduced $H_2S$ production (r = 0.9981). Fructan and Bs significantly interacted in $H_2S$ production (p = 0.014). Casein was the principle additive affecting the concentration of ammonia, only in the control group. Casein and Bs significantly interacted in ammonia production (p = 0.039). The predominant bacteria were Bacillus spp. CWBI B1434 (26%) in the control group, and Streptococcus alactolyticus AF201899 (36%) in the experimental group. In summary, daily dietary Bs reduced ammonia production during fecal fermentation. Lessening L-tryptophan and increasing fructan in the fermentation broth reduced skatole and $H_2S$.

The selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia was carried out in the presence of natural manganese ore (NMO) and manganese as catalysts using a homemade 1/4" reactor at $10,000hr^{-1}$ of space velocity. The inlet ammonia concentration was maintained at 2,000 ppm, with an air balance. The manganese catalyst resulted in a substantial ammonia conversion, with adsorption activation energies of oxygen and ammonia of 10.5 and 22.7 kcal/mol, respectively. Both $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$, defined as the temperatures where 50% and 90% of ammonia, respectively, are converted, decreased significantly when alumina-supported manganese catalyst was applied. Increasing the manganese weight percent by 15 wt% increased the lower temperature activity, but 20 wt% of manganese had an adverse effect on the reaction results. An important finding of the study was that the manganese catalyst benefits from a strong sulfur tolerance in the conversion of ammonia to nitrogen.
